      @@alexchatter692 Eh... I agree on most levels. Most GW base and layer paints are tricky to work with - funnily enough, the Air range are good for beginner painters because they are pre-thinned - but there are two areas I say Citadel paints are great. Texture paints are really well formulated for quick and easy basing. And; while they were marketed as being for new painters, the Contrast paints are actually really versatile and work almost like brush-on inks over most base tones. I use Black Templar to alter the tone of vallejo metallics. I use Apothecary White to deepen the tones of Clone models in Star Wars Legion. I use the colored ones for specific roles. But, I'm also slowly transitioning away from Citadel base and layer paints for the most part, especially as my local store starts to stock better lines - Vallejo model color, Vallejo metal color, Scale75, Turbodork metallics, etc, etc.
      EDIT: Also forgot washes. GW washes are much more subtle than contrast paints; and for newer painters it's easier to use those than to, say, thin your own washes. Or for me being lazy and just grabbing the Agrax or Nuln Oil for basing.

    As someone who’s played this army competitively for a few months now, you’ve pretty much hit the nail on the head with the tier list (except for the lokhust lord he’s still my ultra weird tech choice).
    The issue with the codex sadly doesn’t come from our individual units. It’s a sheer lack of cohesiveness, and a lack of anything reactive.
    For the reactive stuff it’s easy. We don’t have anything like the dozen marine strategems to fall back and shoot, transhuman, +1 save, shoot on death, etc. with the exception of quantum shielding, every strategem you use will be during your turn. There will be no mystery for your opponent, and it just comes down to how much damage they do.
    But the cohesiveness is weirder. It’s more than just the lack of core. It’s how our army just doesn’t mesh right. The buffing characters are all great, but only really work on warriors, lychguard, and immortals. Tomb blades are awesome, but too fast to get any support from core. Destroyers are great but can’t interact with the non destroyer stuff. Canoptek can only be buffed by crypteks, but they’re all normally too mobile to keep up with them. Doomstalkers and doomsday arks all want to get up close to help out, but if they get charged there isn’t much you can do. Triarchs are amazing but can only be buffed by the silent king, who wants to buff everything. The silent king is amazing, but buffs weirdly, because he wants to buff your shooting and buff your melee, but only on core stuff, which isn’t where he’s needed most. He’s also a monster in his own right, but his shooting and melee are just slightly too dispersed to be amazing. A little anti tank, a little anti elite, a little anti horde, it’s just not all quite there. The whole codex is kinda like that, and it’s that sheer lack of unit which holds the necrons back from being a top tier faction.

    • @nathanieleck1023
      @nathanieleck1023 3 года назад +6

      @@traviscumbest3946 eh, not really. Necrons normally have extremely good control over their subordinates, with exceptions of flayed ones, and canoptek units aren’t at all independent, they’re constructs which do exactly as ordered.
      However, necrons are constantly warring and conflicting with each other, which is something much more important that stops them from yoloing the galaxy.

    One of the things to remember about the Necron HQ's is that they have a lot of shenanigans where you get to take HQ units without those HQ units taking up HQ slots. In the case of Crypteks (Xmancers), you can FURTHER take the Murderbuckets without taking up Elite slots. What this means is that some of these HQ units Bricky talked about basically become the functional equivalent of Sergeants in a Space Marine army. You stick them wherever you want them and with whomever you want them to babysit. For example, while you may be running a CCB, you can also take a Chronomancer to stick in your blob of Lychguard and do some insane shit.
    Necron HQs are where all the strategy is at.

    • @nathanieleck1023
      @nathanieleck1023 3 года назад +2

      @@joshwalton25 no, but more reasons than you’d think.
      Firstly. HQ slots for necrons are super competitive. You’re normally only gonna have the points for a battalion or two specialist detachments. Only 3-4 HQs plus a spare cryptek. You need all of those slots for something else. One has to be an overlord, one has to be some kind of cryptek to get another cryptek, and that leaves one flex slot. There are a lot of characters which want to compete for that slot. A lord to have the veil of darkness and re roll ones? That would get you a cheaper, more versatile royal warden, but only once per game. Or one of the many, many other appealing choices.
      Next, you have a command protocol to do that. Meaning he’ll have a turn in which he’s mostly useless, on top of the first turn where he’s mostly useless.
      Also, he won’t be useful every matchup. He could simply be out of position. Because his ability happens in the command phase, you need to have him in range in advance, which against certain armies is just impossible. Or maybe you’re playing an army which just won’t be charging you.
      Lastly, he has no melee potential, at all. Which, for a 75 point noble character, hurts badly. Even a lord is better in melee. He’s not at all a bad unit but there’s just too many better options.

    • @joshwalton25
      @joshwalton25 3 года назад +1

      @@nathanieleck1023 I think being able to give a big blob of Warriors FB-Shoot-Charge is stronger than Re-rolling 1's to shoot. My usual HQ lineup is a Command Barge w/orb and maybe a war scythe, Chronomancer, Warden w/ Veil of Darkness, and if I'm feeling spicy and don't want/need the points elsewhere, a Szeras. I've never felt the urge to run anything besides a Battalion, but running 2 detachments with 5-6 HQ choices (depending on how many free cryptek slots you get) seems excessive.
      Yes, the Warden is objectively worse in melee because of it's lack of AP, but that isn't where you want it to be anyway. Since it's your Veil user, it shouldn't end up in the wrong position very often. Ideally he's Veiling in behind 2x20 Warriors, or 20 Warriors and some Lychguard/Skorpekh Destroyers. Warriors are already one of your best units, and the Warden makes them slap even harder once your opponent almost inevitably gets into melee with them.
      Edit: Beside Imotek and Szeras, the named Lords aren't that good. The Command Barge is much better then either the Lord or Overlord. So unless you're strapped for points or playing Imotek's Dynasty, there's no reason to not take a second Barge if you really want more My Will Be Done instances. Outside specific match-ups, a Chronomancer and/or Szeras is all you need, the other ones are more niche picks.
      Finally, the protocol you're referring to allows you to shoot at -1 to hit in a turn where you fell back. Obviously that's no where near as good as the Warden's ability, and I'd also say it's the weakest of the six Protocols.

Atm the void dragon is leaning towards B imho. Sure, if the meta gets vehicle intensive then he'll be solid, otherwise...he's certainly alright, but not A tier. The death marks are good at killing characters bc of the mortal wounds from the sniper rule. There’s a Necron strat where 6s to wound count as an additional mortal wound. So 2 MWs per 6 to wound. You’re fishing for 6s, but if you roll 2-3 you’re killing most support characters in the game (like Ravenwing apothecaries, ancients, painboys etc).

    Orikan's 'Master Chronomancer' is NECRONS keyword, not DYNASTY keyword. He can effect ALL Necron units. It gives ALL Necron units a 5++. This means that you can give Triarch or a C'tan a re-roll to their charge. You should be running Orikan every time you run any number of Warriors, Triarch, and C'tan. He's easily S-tier.

    The Necron Codex set the bar for other codexes if you ask me. Most the units are somewhere between good to great, not much is just leagues ahead of everything else save the Silent King and they have a ton of variety. You can make a destroyer list, a Canoptek list, a core list, a triarchy list, and anything in between and all of it will be at least good. Maybe some are not competitive but they are all good.

  • @iamnotglenn

    Crypteks are really funky tier wise because you can spec them out so much. They aren’t super expensive, you can double them up with dynastic advisors, they can be protected with cryptothralls you bring on through bound creations, and the cryptek arkanas are flexible. These all cost points but they get to flex a lot of unit requirements in a detachment versus spending CP for another detachment.
    Illuminor Szeras having double rites of reanimation is also insane. He can put d3 warriors on the field or 1 of any other core unit back on the field 2 times per turn. He’s 160 points but if he lives for 3 turns even without the augmentations he can pay back 120 of it easy.

    Resident Necron player here. If you are watching this video because you are interested in starting the faction or starting competitively take what he says with a grain of salt. A lot of the unit placings are way higher or way lower than they deserve to be. Lokhust Lord was put in C tier and they cited low damage, however with a warscythe and either Voidreaper or Blood Scythe relic has the highest PPW out of any of the HQs making him an absolute beast of a duelist. The plasmancer has decent mortal wound output, but is very squishy and when choosing HQs it is typically one of the worst choices due to the utility and overall value of the other options. On top of that the C'tan shards have so much more output if you want a unit dedicated to putting out mortal wounds. Deathmarks are by no means an A tier option because despite having decent output and tankiness you really have to build a list around using them. Point is don't look at this list as your ultimate guide to the faction and do the math yourself to see what options are best.

    I started playing this game about 8-9 months ago (at the time of writing), made a deal with a friend to split on a Tau-Space Marine box, but it was out of stock, so I reluctantly settled for Necrons. I stumbled into an absolute gem of an army. I wouldn't trade my undead space Egyptians for the world.

    Alright, hear me out. Orikan ignores invulns and does d3 damage.
    He's got like an 8% chance to murder any Drukhari character outright *and* he has a Fights First rule. Also Empowering *by* round three is a cumulative 48% chance, it's not as bad as it's made out to be. If he's empowered he's the best character assassin 110 points can buy.
    ASIDE FROM THAT: He's still a Chrono and Chronos are definitely A or S tier. If you're going to take a Chrono anyway and you got 30 points lying around, there's worse things to spend them on than taking Orikan. I say he's probably B tier.

    While I understand the issues with the Obelisk, did you check the ability "Hovering Sentinel" it gained? Assault 24 at S8 and 2 damage is nothing to shake a staff of light at. With its' impressive durability (for Necrons) I might say conditionally useful, combined with 1CP to ignore cover I can see this thing annihilating infantry or possibly a vehicle through weight of fire

    Difference between the Chronomancer and Master Chronomancer ability is the regular effects units with DYNASTY the master version effects all NECRONS. Just a little more flexibility to be able to target anything versus only dynastic units.
    It's still not great, but that is the difference.

      Vault is debatable but I'd rank it at least B for 30W, 4++, 3 Powers + random Power w/ Strat, +1 on Powers making Time's Arrow pop 5W Characters on a 4+, and overall absolutely disgusting damage output

  • @ericmichels2858

    Best use for the Reanimator is that it can do the Necron specific action/secondary objective. No one cares about its shooting and the reanimation beam is during the command phase. You sit one on a close midfield objective and spam the action every round for an easy 5pts or until you force the enemy to waste shots on it to kill it. Which is shots not spent on something else more important.

    When the hexmark got announced I thought considering he's a deathmarks his weapons would do MWs on 6s and they would be D3 shots as every enmitic weapon up to then had been 2d3/3d3. Was so disappointed to finally see his stats. Only way I can see him being back on table is if the armies with squishy troops actually want to take those troops more often (Tau, Guard for example. Though to be fair since guardsman are so cheap he would have to kill a lot of dudes)

    The Lord is interesting in a silent king list cause the lord's will rerolls 1s to hit. Silent king can give out my will be done. So do both to a teleporting squad of reaper warriors and watch an enemy squad melt.
