- Tannhäuser is an opera in three acts, written by Richard Wagner, (WWV 70 in the catalogue of the composer's works) based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the mythologized medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love, a theme running through much of Wagner's mature work.
The Pilgrim's choir is one of the highlights of this opera, and build around one of the main themes used in the opera (e.g. also in the ouverture).
And of course Frans Liszt made, like he did with many famous orchestral pieces, a transcription for solo piano
Great piece
I came to know this piece through DOnald Lambert's monstrous stride piano reinterpretation. The original is a beautiful work and I"ll always be impressed with Lambert's ability to take these ideas and swing them to hell and back
who’s the performer?
