What you saw with the woman claiming 100,000 mutilations and her prep and then methods is how some are continuing this practice currently. In times past, it was something I don't believe many people could witness.
No anesthetic, any sharp instrument will do, the child is not anesthesised in any way, nothing for pain, no sedation of any kind, - and most 'traditional' of all, - the poor thrashing and screaming child is simply held down by as many 'humanists' as is needed. Then the devotee of human rights with filthy hands slowly begins to cut and then slice away anything and everything even resembling normal anatomy, - all on a dirt floor. Is this religion ? - or is it simply tradition, peer pressure ? - No, I must be very closed minded - naturally,
it's just their culture. "It's a rite of passage; - it's just the way it's always been". Fabulous answer 😐. I must be an enemy of Anthropology I guess. It rather sounds to me like very sad depravity of the first order. 'Ethnocentrism' - I'm glad I've a strong stomach.

In 1983 a very dear friend of mine from Ghana came to my home. To make a little extra money, she sold bread every Friday, delicious white bread, we bought two loaves a week. We lived in university family housing, it was multicultural.
She was visibly upset. I asked her in and she sat down and burst into tears. It was shocking, the only emotion she ever conveyed was joy, she was the most positive person I had met up to then. When she came to America with her husband to get his degree, she left 9 of her 11 children in Ghana, they were older teens or married. She told me her young daughter was in love and the man's family wouldn't allow the marriage without circumcision. I had no idea what she was talking about. She explained it to me through sobs. She didn't want her daughter to do it but wasn't there to fight for her.
It was the first time I heard of FGM.
I still tear up when I think of her pain, she said it had been done to her and made her life miserable. She fought for her daughters not to have it done.

You mean to tell me these "men" would rather be with a woman who has little to no desire to sleep with them (and will likely be in pain doing so) than with a woman who wants to sleep with them? @@fatmatasamura8552 Definitely continue to refuse to believe that, please, for your own sake. I think the main reason is to prevent girls from having pleasure, so the husband can be more "sure" the wife isn't having affairs. If it's made painfull or just unpleasant for a girl, it makes it in the husbands mind more unlikely. Basically, in this documentary there is a young man saying the tradition is more important to him, than the fact that very tradition is hurting women. It's complete and utter nonsense, and I think he and others like him are being purely selfish. It's some men's selfishness that makes them think this way and sometimes they seem to manage to make it seem like "it's a tradition, so there should be nothing wrong seen in it by anyone"... Don't fall in the trap of believing such people🙂, please ask yourself, have they something to gain from lying to you.

when you get down to the basics of what is going on with this, the issue is with seeing women as objects or currency with virginity being more important that a woman's quality of life. It is also a way for women to be made to accept a culture of pain and being less than. Its about stealing any power she may ever want to have.

Why do women have to always prove themselves?! Like, getting the cut done in order to prove their virginity, because else men won't marry them! C'mon marriage is not a market deal whereby someone tackles with cows and all; instead it's a strong and emotional bond between two people who support each other for the rest of their life. People really need to understand this and seek help from education. Also, God will never want any of his kids to endure such a torture; so why is this act being tagged as a traditional and somehow religious?? I believe that it is all dependent on the mindset of people. This is because in the video, some said it's not compulsory but rather a choice; but after learning the dire consequences of this act, I think that it should be completely banned throughout the world. We need to be as we are. We are God's creation and hence no one has the right to change us except than God. Fight for your rights and stand up for yourself. The change starts with YOU, TODAY.
    MAKE THE CHANGE.
