What you saw with the woman claiming 100,000 mutilations and her prep and then methods is how some are continuing this practice currently. In times past, it was something I don't believe many people could witness. Always carrying the burden and shielding their babies from unnecessary pain. ❤
In 1983 a very dear friend of mine from Ghana came to my home. To make a little extra money, she sold bread every Friday, delicious white bread, we bought two loaves a week. We lived in university family housing, it was multicultural. She was visibly upset. I asked her in and she sat down and burst into tears. It was shocking, the only emotion she ever conveyed was joy, she was the most positive person I had met up to then. When she came to America with her husband to get his degree, she left 9 of her 11 children in Ghana, they were older teens or married. She told me her young daughter was in love and the man's family wouldn't allow the marriage without circumcision. I had no idea what she was talking about. She explained it to me through sobs. She didn't want her daughter to do it but wasn't there to fight for her. It was the first time I heard of FGM. I still tear up when I think of her pain, she said it had been done to her and made her life miserable. She fought for her daughters not to have it done.
Absolutely love the reaction of the tribe after watching the video. Education. More videos. So happy when that man said he would kill someone if they did that to his daughter. All parents should feel that way.

@@fatmatasamura8552 Definitely continue to refuse to believe that, please, for your own sake. I think the main reason is to prevent girls from having pleasure, so the husband can be more "sure" the wife isn't having affairs. If it's made painfull or just unpleasant for a girl, it makes it in the husbands mind more unlikely. Basically, in this documentary there is a young man saying the tradition is more important to him, than the fact that very tradition is hurting women. It's complete and utter nonsense, and I think he and others like him are being purely selfish. It's some men's selfishness that makes them think this way and sometimes they seem to manage to make it seem like "it's a tradition, so there should be nothing wrong seen in it by anyone"... Why do women have to always prove themselves?! Like, getting the cut done in order to prove their virginity, because else men won't marry them! Also, God will never want any of his kids to endure such a torture; so why is this act being tagged as a traditional and somehow religious?? This is because in the video, some said it's not compulsory but rather a choice; but after learning the dire consequences of this act, I think that it should be completely banned throughout the world. I just stumbled on this topic and was mesmerized at the very notion of anyone enduring pain on that level. , and apalled that anybody could actually perform this act of disgusting, stupid tradition,,,, This documentary was very well done and thorough, I applaud the lady who took us on this journey .....
Did you know that it was legal to circumcise girls in the USA up until 1997
I'm a woman and this traumatised me! I watched the entire thing with my thighs clenched tightly together.
The screams of that 2yr old @ 22.40! Omggggg 😠😠😠😭😭😭😭😭😠😠😠
Yeah I broke down and cried myself.
The cries of baby boys gettting circumcised is no different, try watching those videos and think about how the majority of victims of circumcision suffer.
@@fritnat In what country? I live in the western world and our male circumcisions are done WITH ANESTHESIA SO THE BOYS FEEL NOTHING DURING THE PROCESS. It's very humane. Yes, there'll be the post-surgery healing pain, like every other surgery, but all in all it's not life threatening.
Her screaming was so disturbing, I have a two year old and can never imagine this being done to her.
@@briel7904 Would you like it better, and support the practice, in your "western" world, if only the girls are anesthetized first, then given pain killers? Will you say "very humane process" and "the girls feel nothing" then? ... I bet you will not answer!
Tack för en bra dokumentär Fatma. Ingen mer fgm någonsin!!
God Thanks for a good documentary Fatma. No more FGM ever!!
Such a wonderful documentary, very engaging.
I wonder if her mom softened her answer in order to spare her pain? They said earlier that almost all the girls in that area got the pharoanic cut. And her mom was from a more traditional generation.
I can't express the enough the bravery of these women from these village's that have worked on their own to end this barbaric practice in their communities. Sadly, yes the practice continues but hopefully these women, along with some men realize what a profound change they have made by educating and changing peoples outlook on FGM.💟
God bless all the beautiful men and women in this story. I wish someone would tell the young lady that ran away : you’re *already* an important person, honey. You’ve already touched so many lives.
But that mother at the end 😢 she was so nonchalant about her cut. She didn’t want her daughter to hurt for her. She may not have suffered the worst FGM but she suffered a form torture and bless her heart for not wanting to place that burden of pain on her daughter. That’s what moms do.
I believe that everyone can appreciate this documentary! I just believe the thumbs down are in regards to the people practicing FMG... Not that this was a bad documentary.
I'm in constant prayer for all those that have faced FGM and that are soon to face FGM. May it all end now, in Jesus Christ mighty name. Amen. 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Im so glad to have not been born in that part of the world . The United states has its problems but still....
But it is rare and it is prosecuted.
@@jonamere As it should be.
OliviaNewtronBomb right
It happens in a massive way in USA, only its male new borns who suffer!
@@jonamere One of your great 'respected ' Judges claimed the Feds don't have authority to prosecute a case because the State has Jurisdiction , so the potential victims cannot be protected . And religious zealots can always legally argue it breaks their covenant and interferes with Freedom of Religion. Good luck trying to save women using Male Judges in a country where 50% to 80-% of men are genitally mutilated by the Medical Establishment .
A very inspirational work, no doubt.
MASHA ALLAH.
True 💕💕💕
please do more documentaries about FGM.
Any man who honestly believes a woman being cut, and having a decrease in sexual desire, makes her more "appealing" sounds like a sick predator. You mean to tell me these "men" would rather be with a woman who has little to no desire to sleep with them (and will likely be in pain doing so) than with a woman who wants to sleep with them? Yuck.
Nobody should undergo any kind of cutting on those sensitive areas, nor boys neither girls. What sickening tradition. 😢
Wow Kenya the man are so supportive here as compared to Somaliland,
"Woman are woman's own enemy" this saying is very much relatable.....If all the woman come together no culture, no man, no religion can violate us because the society can't run without a woman, there is no Society if there is no woman
Not much to oppress either
who ever thought this was a good idea?
The women
Men
the Phorahs from Egypt
This breaks my heart, those poor little girls and women 😢
As somali this really angers me so much I am very grateful there are woman and girls fighting against this evil behaviour it is against Islam
Watched this shocking documentary with legs very firmly crossed. Barbaric beyond words.
thanks fatima , it it very interesting program , do more documet films about all problem in africa especially in eritrea ,
excellent documentary on FGM. this is very good to use as educational material and it shows the fact that this tradition is still very strong in many countries such as Somalia/Somaliland.
Yes it is. I think many people, myself included, thought that FGM was rare and dying out. I realize now that is not the case.
Uneducated, sexist Troll! Such disrespect for women.
This video has really been an emotional roller coaster for me. But mostly I was given so much hope and I really do see a brighter future for these young girls. I hope one day I can help these young women the way they did and help give back to my community.
Lord! I feel so unworthy compared to these brave young women. I wish I could pay for all of them to continue their education.
When Fatma cried,I cried. So,so sad for all the women who have had this procedure. So,so wrong. It is another example of mans control over women's bodies. Disgusting and vile procedure that has absolutely no meaning or need, ever.
This just made my blood pressure rise!
No wonder this documentary won an award, the author has done a great job
the singing is beautiful. fatima, make a documentary on traditional singing!!!
I'm using this for a paper that I am writing and it is so overwhelming that I am actually crying.
Am against the this whole issue, and try to get a clear explanation about this. But family and some people say it is in the quran as a sunnah. But I refuse to believe because I have not seen this in the bible.
Don't fall in the trap of believing such people🙂, please ask yourself, have they something to gain from lying to you.
Love ur work Aljazeera
This bring all the pain back to me. I was cut too😭😭😭💔💔💔
I am so sorry & I hope your suffering is somehow alleviated...
This is beyond horrific..God help these poor women!!! 🙏🙏🙏
I feel so bad that these girls and women have to deal with all this pain. And to have to live their 1 chance at life like that.. it's so sad..
Thanks a loot for your wonderful Documentary you are real VERY talented in this field so keep it up the GOOD work and all of us are waiting for your up coming next films , programs , works.
How hopeful and progressive and wonderful that there ARE peoples in these communities who understand how cruel, and how wrong a life of completely unnecessary pain is to women and everyone's daughters
Excellent documentary.
I think id rather be born dead then go through fgm
Im so sorry domtilla for what happened to your cousin im sorry that you saw that may god comfort you with his peace and may he shield your mind from harm and may he strengthen you to keep on fighting against fgm
its 2023 now and im watching this docu and I hope it stoped by now
when you get down to the basics of what is going on with this, the issue is with seeing women as objects or currency with virginity being more important that a woman's quality of life. It is also a way for women to be made to accept a culture of pain and being less than. Its about stealing any power she may ever want to have.
It's ok for the guy to say " it's apart of our culture and we should stick with it "
When he's not the one being cut
Do they practise male circumcision there ?
Maybe if they did the tradition wouldn't be as appealing
Every culture that practices FGM practices MGM as well. Cultures that normalize genital cutting usually dont discriminate on gender when it come to who's getting cur
@@lucoolio there is no MGM. There is no female circumcision. It's called fgm because it is mutilation. It's torture. It's more akin to castrating a boy than to circumcision. I'm not saying circumcision is right but let's please not insult these woman's suffering by equating the two...
My heart goes out to all the children and young women that suffer through this I’m just learning of the process and procedures today this is horrible.
Im gobsmacked a woman could do this to another woman i really am, its sickening
Just watching this and other videos have been traumatic for me so I can only imagine how traumatised those baby girls who are subjected to this atrocity are.
12:27 So how about we start a cultural tradition where we extract the teeth of those with braces? It's surely a harmful thing but luckily culture is more important than people.
There are already african cultures where teeth are extracted however the guy with braces is most likely cut, isn't that enough?
Nice from Kenya -AMAZING and a great leader ❤️
I can’t believe this still happens 😱😱 just watching this made my lady part hurt I can’t imagine what those poor girls and women go through for men’s ego it has to stop now immediately it’s barbaric 😡😡😡
Do you feel the same way about male genital mutilation?
@@pog574 It's not nearly the same.
@@pog574 male circumcision is solely for the purpose of preventing uti’s and infection. It doesn’t hurt them when they’re older. They’re just cutting off extra skin. WOMEN however , they are cutting the entire nerve endings ! They can not feel pleasure , can not pee or menstruate. It’s not nearly the same. Have you watched the entire video ?
@@pog574What is it with men that even in a case as clear as this, there has to be one lousy example of yall that crawls out of the woodwork and is narcissistic enough to cry "what about me". Did you get half you manhood removed while you were wide awake? With a rusty knife and no anasthesia? No? (And even than you wouldn't suffer as much as woman who go through fgm, cause you wouldn't be expected to push baby after baby out of your mutilated body, which can often only be done by cutting again.) Than stfu, sit down, get educated.
Such a wonderful documentary. I learned so much about FGM
Really like the way Elly spoke about her experiences and choices.
thank you for this video I hope it's educate others this needs to stop women should not have to go through this pain and prayers for these women
RIP clementine ur an angel and you were beautiful
A very interesting interviews. So glad Girls are getting the courage to speak up against this barbaric act against them
STOP FGM NOW!!!
Much love to Al Jazeera, English
I usually read, but videos even better
Horrific and sickening 😠😡
Harmful practices should be overcome. No human body should be tortured for any reason.
Excellent...
This must be stopped!
This is NOT representative of ISLAM!!! This is culture NOT Religion.
Maybe not in Africa but everywhere else it is islam and islam is part of culture!
@Turanshah Hafizovitch Muradabubakarov it's not mentioned in the Quran or anything to do with Islam
We are fearfully and wonderfully made in the eyes of our king of heaven
Why do women have to always prove themselves?! Like, getting the cut done in order to prove their virginity, because else men won't marry them! C'mon marriage is not a market deal whereby someone tackles with cows and all; instead it's a strong and emotional bond between two people who support each other for the rest of their life. People really need to understand this and seek help from education. Also, God will never want any of his kids to endure such a torture; so why is this act being tagged as a traditional and somehow religious?? I believe that it is all dependent on the mindset of people. This is because in the video, some said it's not compulsory but rather a choice; but after learning the dire consequences of this act, I think that it should be completely banned throughout the world. We need to be as we are. We are God's creation and hence no one has the right to change us except than God. Fight for your rights and stand up for yourself. The change starts with YOU, TODAY.
MAKE THE CHANGE.
Amazing documentary Fatima. There is something we can all do to eradicate this practice.Bit by bit and through proper education on the issue I believe with time FGM practice will be extinct. Those of us living in the society where it is still practised, please don't sit back but be an advocate to educate the society on the dangers of FGM ps in a nice and empathetic manner.
