  • I recently got my hands on the 3rd computer mini from Retro Games, The 400 Mini, based on the Atari 400 Computer which was originally released alongside the Atari 800 around November of 1979.
I was looking forward to getting this one because the Atari 400 just so happened to be the first computer I ever used. In fact, I still own the original to this day and brought it out for this video.
In this videos, I'll talk a bit about my history with the Atari 400, unbox The 400 Mini, try out a few of the built in games (as well as a couple of hidden ones), try out some other USB controllers I have to see if they work or not, and finally, load up a flash drive with ROMs, and boot up some of my favorite games I played on the Atari 400 when I was a kid.

Very cool little device. You have nostalgia for the Atari 400 like I have for the C64. Thanks for the video, Crow.

I have nostalgia for the C64 too. I certainly remember playing more games on the C64. It's just that the Atari 400 came first for me.

The smashed corners on the box, makes it look more vintage 😉

Can’t wait to get one. (Also its NALTOVISION. My old channel got terminated by RUclips and I lost access to that channel. I’m using this new one now.)

I know it's a niche market but I'd love to see someone do this for the tandy coco

The CoCo was my whole childhood. My main gaming system, supplemented by the Atari ST, until the Game Gear.

Hey, if they make a mini of it, I'd probably buy it even though I've never owned an original myself.

The Atari 400 with the cassette drive was my very first computer setup at home. I bought mine in 1979 or 1980. Thank you for this video. From the videos I've see thus far, you're the only one who thought to do a side-by-side size comparison of the classic 400 and the 400 mini. Also, nice touch with the cutting mat to convey size. I'd be curious if the Atari wireless modern controller will work (even plugged in) on this if you have a ROM for Robotron which was a dual stick game.

It's amazing how this small mini Atari400 looks isn't it? I had to compare it to my original machine as well. They nailed the look I think.

Totally agree. It's amazing how detailed it is.

When playing with other controllers, my first thought was “USB to 9pin,” and that’s what you tried. Great! I suspect the paddle controllers would work fine if you also connected a USB keyboard, which would enable use of the start-select-option keys. It’s worth a try. As for joysticks, I’d be thrilled if I could use Wico joysticks on this device.
Another hopeful controller candidate: Atari 5200 controllers. I want that analog joystick and keypad, but without the breaking.

i usualy pick the "this is a gift" option at check out so they put it in a nondescript box, which helps keep things a little safer.
i bought one of these atari controllers for my TheC64 maxi because i grrw up with a c64 with atari controlers. it has 8 buttons total.
i had to map out the buttons so i knew what was what. the shoulder button is the B button and launches games from the media menu, the menu button is still menu, the one next to it on back is C, the face ring has A at the bottom, the second fire button is the Top, and the left and right buttons are mapped to Tl and Tr which i never use on the maxi. the way i hold the stick, my hand goes around the controller and i controll the stick with the saddle between my thumb and pointer, so my pointer keeps hitting the menu button lol. wish i could remap the buttons to have second fire as shoulder and abc and menu on the ring

I realize you might be thinking that it came exactly they way I showed it in the beginning of the video, but it did come in a solid white mailing bag, so nobody would have known what it was unless they opened it. I'm just puzzled why this was mailed in a bag with no padding while other things that I've ordered that were cheaper and couldn't have been easily damaged have come in boxes with air pillows.

It's a really cool piece of nostalgic hardware.
Definitely more iconic looking than a generic regular keyboard console like the C64 mini or A500 mini.
Unfortunately, the Game Library is not as good as the C64 or A500.

Neat video.. once again thanks for your attention to detail.
What monitor were you using to play the games on?

      @CrowContinuum  Месяц назад +1

It's just a cheap portable monitor I got off of Amazon last year. The brand was Uperfect. Its actually on Amazon for about $70 now, but there there are a ton of portable monitors to choose from if you go searching and the pricing is all over the place.

I was thinking of getting this, but I have no nostalgia towards it and have an Atari XEGS with a flash cart already. Although this is in HDMI and you can add your own roms.

All that controller compatibility.... and still nothing works on a super retrocade as a replacement controller.
