- From the CD released in 1998 (the same year Juan passed away) called "Juan Mercadal Plays Great Miniatures" on the Aranjuez label.
The album notes are highly interesting, I'll share a couple of bits here (I also plan to share more musical selections from this album):
"Only upon the continued insistence of Mr. Mercadal's friends, family, fellow musicians, and many admirers that he leave a permanent legacy of his unique style and power as a performer, and upon the generous intervention of Mr. Juan Orozco in fulfilling Mr. Mercadal's no-splice requirement, did Mr. Mercadal make this recording (which, he emphasizes, is a modest and unpretentious undertaking to please his students, friends, and family)."
The same album notes make reference to Juan's 1962 "At Vizcaya" recording saying that it was recorded much in the same fashion and that only ONE note was changed on the entire album.
Juan recorded this album with a 1994 Robert Ruck guitar.

Every so often, I look up my grandfather on RUclips to watch him perform again. It's always lovely and enlightening to read the comments from all his former students. Thanks for sharing.
@@MikeMercadal Super cool! Feel free to share any stories with us fans of your grandfather!
Wow !! So many forgotten excellent guitar players !!
Thanks for sharing this and the next one from him !!👏👏👏
I know, right?! So many forgotten names - it's a joy to bring them back to light. At least in Mercadal's case, many of his students are still alive and well to speak of his legacy.
Mercadal was a fine player, thanks for this. I have the "At Vizcaya" disc as well. Really good album.
Yes I love the Vizcaya album 👍 Thanks for checking this out, David!
Tate, thank you for uploading. I would be so grateful to be able to listen to the rest of this CD.
No problem at all! I was planning to share the entire album here but since I haven't done that yet I've put a link in the description which will take you to it. Apparently, Juan just recorded the CD for friends and family and was adamant that there be no edits or trickery in the recording so that it sounded more like a live performance. As such, it may not quite measure up to the standards of perfection that we are used to hearing these days. But I love it - there's some great playing on there.
@@tateharmann3057 I am so grateful to you! I really love his playing.
@@carterhale6227 No worries, enjoy!
Nice one, Tate! This was a great performance.
Thanks for checking it out, Josh!
