Tárrega Prelude in Am | Telesforo Julve SP/BR (1932-1944) - No Nails
This video was part of a for sale video that I've since converted into a private listing. I split out this quick prelude from that video to have available publicly. These are some non-gut strings that I really like! No reverb or any other effects added.
Strings: Knobloch Erithacus EDB 31.5 Bio-Nylon Low Tension
Pitch: A=440

Piano: E. Granados "Berceuse" from Escenas Romanticas

My amateur take on this beautiful little piece. I used a Roland FP-10 as a midi controller and played it into GarageBand. The instrument is a real sampled piano available for free on the SoundPaint platform. It's a 1928 Steinway Grand. Playing this piano you really have to pedal a lot to avoid muddiness - and I still don't think I've avoided it altogether. I'm pedaling a lot more here than when...
Tárrega - Prelude in E major | Gut and Silk Strings No Nails A=426Hz

A fresh little morning recording of a prelude I've been practicing. I used to play this one with nails and wanted to record it without nails because I had a feeling it would work really well this way. However...morning isn't my best time for performance. I find myself more relaxed, contemplative, and poetic in the evening hours. But this is when I had some time. Anyways, this is a single take w...
F. Tárrega - prelude in F# minor transposed to E minor
Просмотров 4168 месяцев назад
This mysterious little prelude is one of my favorites by Tárrega. I've not ever seen a manuscript or early edition of it. It seems particularly difficult to find so I wanted to share it here. I'm sharing the original in F#min without any of the fingering or dynamic markings as that can be tied to a particular edition and I don't want to get myself into any trouble. I simply think that this piec...
Harmony Stella H-941 Sunburst - "I get the blues when it rains" in Etta Baker style

Another lovely vintage Harmony that I recently repaired. I can't remember which strings I've got on here but I know they're definitely something super light tension. Canciones Leonesas No. 1, "Berceuse" - Arrangement: Llobet | 1929 Version
Просмотров 383Год назад
I think this is as good as it's going to get for now. I tried to trick my brain into playing better by thinking, "if you don't play the repeat then there's less playing time overall and therefore less chance of mistakes". Anyways, this can also be a good comparison with the non-tornavoz version here: ruclips.net/video/LpNX2cfXKAQ/видео.htmlsi=YIpPbkfjuY7Iq306 However, between the non-tornavoz v...
F. Tárrega - Prelude in D major (no. 2?) | Gut and Silk strung vintage Valencian Guitar
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
After two failed attempts at recording single take videos of a bigger work that I recently recorded in audio only (Leonesa), I decided to go back to basics and play something simple that I didn't have to think too hard about while recording. Then, at the same time I could work on camera angle and mic placement. This prelude is labeled as no. 2 in my Tárrega book and is one of the lesser-known a...
Removable Tornavoz Experiment No. 2 - Canço del lladre
Просмотров 604Год назад
I did something a little different in this experiment...instead of switching back and forth between the sounds with the tornavoz and without, I decided to just record a whole piece that I had already recorded for comparison. This tornavoz is 3.25" deep and .005" thick. So it's a lot deeper but also quite thinner than the first one. I was amazed to see that it lowered the resonance from a G to s...
Llobet: Villar's Canciones Leonesas, No. 1 - Berceuse (1929 autographed ms version)
Просмотров 320Год назад
From the legacy of María Luisa Anido comes this version of the tune. It was the one that Llobet himself recorded and it sticks more to the original piano in my opinion. It's also a bit more challenging than the other popular version (in my opinion). But it's well worth the effort - it's quite beautiful! Like most of my recordings I'm not completely happy with this one but I think it's as good a...
Canço del Lladre - Arr. Miguel Llobet (gut and silk strung vintage guitar played with fingertips)
Просмотров 323Год назад
Continuing to make my way through Llobet's "songbook". I've always loved this one but never had the gumption to work it up until recently. I think it was all of those harmonics that always scared me off before. They do look daunting on paper but really aren't so bad once you realize how much repetition there is in those sections. Trebles are still Pirastro and the B and G trebles have now laste...

This little lesson is a peaceful moment in a crazy world. I used to play it a lot (with nails) and don't think I had ever tried it again until recently. This year marks 8 years since I cut my nails off. I'm getting close to the number of years I played WITH nails (around 15 years I think...). A little clip from last night's practice session. Guitar is back using real silk basses by Aquila and plain gut trebles by Pirastro. The high E string was literally unraveling as I was playing...I think its end is near - thankfully I have another ready to go. It's been hot and humid here lately also so playing in tune has been challenging. 0:00 Sor Op. 35 No. 3 false start, then a little messin...
Harmony H175 "Classic" Guitar Demo
Просмотров 956Год назад
A quick bit of Tárrega I often play to trial a guitar. This was Harmony's most expensive classical model that they ever made and has real inlaid marquetry. All solid woods: spruce top, maple back and side, mahogany neck, etc. This one didn't need that much in terms of repair: 1. A couple of cracks to fill and cleat 2. Three back braces needed regluing 3. Original heel cap was missing so I made ...

1970 Harmony Stella H942 Country Blues Fingerstyle (Cotten/Baker)
Просмотров 475Год назад
I recently completed some work on an old Harmony Stella (for sale here: rvrb.io/1970-stella-h942-fvun67 ). It completely exceeded my expectations in terms of sound. Many ladder braced guitars are fundamentally focused and have a quick attack with less sustain. This one isn't quite like that. It has great sustain and shimmery overtones. I was reading that this might be because a typical ladder b...

Ah you had the Knoloch bionylon on? Sounds great.
Yes - I initially got them because of their super low tension specs. Once they settled in (which seemed to take longer than normal nylon) I really loved them!

@@MikeMercadal Super cool! Feel free to share any stories with us fans of your grandfather!
Great find, thank you! These appear to be Segovia's arrangements, which given the date of the recording makes sense. The Allemande in Segovia's setting is played in A minor, not the usual E minor. Alfonso's guitar seems to be tuned to about A-415, which again is perfectly reasonable for the era.
@@davidnorton2642 Cool insights, thanks for listening David! Francisco’s story is an interesting and tragic one :(
merci beaucoup
Beau son, bravo Tate!
C est tres beau.

Merci Karine!
Great sound, Tate! That's interesting about the virtual Steinway, maybe they were able to program the functionality too. My college had a vintage Steinway from about that era (or maybe earlier), so I do understand the extra use of pedal as well as the difference in action. Somewhere I have a video saved playing that, I'll have to try and find it. Anyways, as with your guitar performances your dynamics and phrasing brought out the delicate nuances of this piece beautifully. There's a sort of dreamlike quality to this piece, like floating on a cloud. I could see it as the end credits to a movie, or equally in a Studio Ghibli flick. 👏
@@Josh.Vanjani Yes totally I've played on old Steinway grands and this experience actually feels very similar! You can get this piano for free from Soundpaint - you should check it out. Thanks for listening and your nice comment as well :)

@@FS.2772.guitar Thanks Felix! Haha the key is C# but it's only a challenge when learning. Once it's learned it plays as easy as any key. Unlike guitar where, even when you've learned a piece in Bb you know your hand is going to hurt after playing it lol.
@@tateharmann3057 haha it's so typical of that era to use these weird keys, i never understood why, make C or D hehe totally agree, when i see Bb major i usually play something else instead

Just stumbled on your video, as I purchased a 1922-26 Telesforo Julve that looks very similar to yours with 3 top braces- although it has the inlay strips left/right on the bridge. It came with a set of Savarez Rectified but I’m also trying some other options. Do you have another link to the string tension calculator as the one you have doesn’t work. Currently tuned to 415hz
@@DSW964 I just updated the link in the description, sorry about that! I'd love to see some pics of your guitar especially of the internal bracing. You can contact me through the Facebook link on my channel. Thanks!

@@StevenWatsonMusic Appreciate it Steven. I think it could be polished a bit more but this is an honest take of how I'd Like it to sound. I'm still working on Marieta, as that one is a bit out of my comfort zone, unlike this prelude.

A música é emocionante, que violão!, mas os comentários, de pessoas de diversas partes do mundo, em várias línguas, todas sentindo a mesma coisa é muito emocionante. Tate, thank you for uploading. I would be so grateful to be able to listen to the rest of this CD.
No problem at all! I was planning to share the entire album here but since I haven't done that yet I've put a link in the description which will take you to it. Apparently, Juan just recorded the CD for friends and family and was adamant that there be no edits or trickery in the recording so that it sounded more like a live performance. As such, it may not quite measure up to the standards of perfection that we are used to hearing these days. But I love it - there's some great playing on there.
@@tateharmann3057 I am so grateful to you! I really love his playing.

each day, good or bad is worth it, sometimes it gets really hard to appreciate it, i know, but when the sun is setting or you listen to the sound of rain, it doesn't seem that bad after all. There are times when one isn't allowed to enjoy these simple times and i've been there. once i started to just care about what i could change and not be bothered by what i had no play in i started to appreciate life. I'm not saying one has stop caring about things not under one's control, i'm saying life is easier when you don't resent these things and see them as part of your journey. the world is so full of possibilities, so vast, explore it and make memories. love it and experience life.
