I don’t get why not speaking English well in China is an issue since it’s not their native language despite Hong Kong being a British colony for a time. I don’t expect non-Chinese to be able to speak a Chinese language so why should the Chinese as a whole be expected to speak English?
I teach English online to Mainland Chinese students. They want to learn the language mainly for travel, getting into an international school or study abroad and for business as well.
@@hellkat2285 I think english is the inernational language because of science. Before WW2 german was the international language, every scientist or important person would speak german. After the war it became the US since they had the most scientific results during and after the war.

OH YES - And the older man was very wise! Especially about the dog meat thing - I think everyone needs to let go of that stereotype. There are many cultures where people have eaten bugs and I don't look down upon them. If it was for the situation that a person would have to choose between starving to death or just eating dog meat, I can guarantee that most of the people who make fun of the Chinese for this would be eating dog meat to stay alive! After studying Chinese in school for so long I stopped believing those common myths, but it was when I actually went last summer that I saw how cool China is. Everyone was SO nice and took care of foreigners. When I spoke Chinese, they were even more open to explain their culture and teach me anything I wanted to know. And people literally got in lines to take pictures with us haha

I agree on many Chinese tourists being absurdly loud and impolite but I've also met the nicest, kindest, most hard-working Chinese people at school (university) and work so... I don't think the stereotypes are completely true.
Idk pal... younger Chinese people especially students are sooo hardworking and book smart, some are a bit geeky. They also seem to be pretty harmless and get pushed around by the native people. I know a few instances where Chinese kids are being bullied really badly. while the absurdly loud tourists were mostly from the older generations.
@TealAlloy Well how do you know whenever an asian tourist is rude that he/she is Chinese? You don't, but everyone just assumes they are anyways. There have been a few cases of asian tourists (Koreans, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, etc) being rude and they pretend to be Chinese to save their reputations.
Some Chinese tourists are loud and impolite, some are perfect guests. Same for Americans, UK, Germans, Spanish. Italians and French tend to have more good guests than bad ones. Canadians are just lovely. Different people all over the world behave differently.

In India there is a much greater population who speak English hence it is easier to learn in such an environment. Plus in different parts of India they speak entirely different languages, so maybe learning English was a need as well?? Also there are countries that are non-anglophone but their language is a lot more similar to English comparing to Mandarin, such as Dutch. Therefore, your comparison is entirely biased. It will not hold up. To the Chinese, there is a national language (Mandarin). We do not need to speak English in our daily life, so yes maybe we do not get enough practice. A more important reason we speak Chinese is simply because we love it. Why bother speaking a second language when your first language is more concise if needed be, more expressive if needed be, have influence over a great continent and more foreigners are learning it? Plus, half of these Chinese people can have a conversation in English. How often would you find an American on street and have a conversation with the language they learned in school, regardless of Spanish, Chinese or Japanese?

I'd disagree. Stereotypes don't appear out of nowhere, there is always a basis for them. Russian villains are exception though - it's because of propaganda, not collective observation. I'm not saying generalizing is right, but statistically speaking,, stereotypes are often true to some degree.
This is another imprint. In China, not all parents are very strict. I don't know how this impression comes. Don't judge China according to the Chinese immigrant group. It will only produce sample bias.
I've not heard about parents pressurising kids to get good grade in China. In Korea? Yes, very much. I mean pressure to excel is evident in every Asian countries so it's all about how much pressure?

I honestly don't get the dog meat thing, like why do people think eating dogs is so different from eating pigs or cows? People around the world eat all animals, including bunnies, guinea pigs, doves, cats, etc. that are also often kept as pets, so why are people so mad about dogs? Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's right to eat dogs, but I don't think eating any other sentient being is right either. I just don't get how people can eat other animals but be so shocked about dogs being eaten.
In India, it's a sin to eat beef due to the religion. In Western Countries, it's a sin to eat dogs or a cats because of being pets. It's all based on perception of cultures. China mostly ate it back then due to the Great Famine and when you're starving, you'll eat anything.

Pigs and rats are smarter than dogs, they are much better at problem solving, and considered to be easier to train than dogs. Domestic rats also mirror their owner's emotions and can recognise when a human is sad. They also love being tickled and play hide and seek. Both cows and chickens develope close friendships with each other, can hold grudges and understand cause and effect - relations. The only reason you think dogs are more like pets than food is that you've been raised to think that. Research has shown that the more people eat a particular animal, the more likely they are to dismiss that species' intelligence and empathy. Which in turn is a result of our own empathy; it's a lot less painful to hurt animals if we think they are dumb senseless beings, instead of admitting how similar we are to them.

I've met plenty of Chinese people, several of which I've worked alongside. Not ONE of them have ever been disrespectful. In fact, I believe that because of my positive attitude around them, they were able to open up and become more friendly with me. There was an older Chinese man I worked with who always stopped at the front desk, and I'd always stand when he'd enter and shake his hand. On Christmas Eve, he actually brought in a very nice present for me (even though I didn't expect it), and when I read the card, it said, "Thank you for being nice and pleasant toward me, it means a lot." I guess it helps to know a couple Chinese greetings, as well. Haha.
I've met a handful of some disrespectful Chinese people, mostly through work and they're usually the older generation. Although I go to school in NYC with a ton of Mainlanders and all of them seem to be pretty great all around, if you get to know them.

I'm so dubious about stereotypes, being a black woman. However this one - Chinese tourists - is one i used to have until I grew the hell up. It's not about rudeness as much as it is about cultural differences. I mean how someone treats you is usually different on a individual to individual basis, as a woman and a Black woman I've come up against many stereotypes and will throughout my life because of prejudices and ignorant mindsets. However it has given me a better understanding of how not to generalise a whole group of people because of their skin or where they're from, at least not negatively so. I hate it. I also feel embarrassed that they're made to feel ashamed.

I'm Chinese and I love to travel abroad. I agree that some of the tourists are loud and sometimes they don't obey the rules, which I find it annoying too. But their behaviors cannot be changed overnight neither do I have the power to force them to be polite. All I can do is that I discipline myself, try to set a good example so that gradually they can get improved by seeing what I am doing. Travelling abroad is not just for sightseeing, I think the person is more like a name card of his/her own country, what he/she does sometimes can represent their country's image. So for the Chinese tourists, we really should pay more attention to our behaviors when travelling abroad and let the world know that we can also be polite.

I agree on most of the points. But why does everyone have to know english? You dont see spanish people go to germany and ask why they dont speak spanish. They speak their language in their country. @@karmenwang English is a trade language, needed for a lot of jobs. How can one do business with other countries when most traders use English, often over their native language? If one were to be a pilot, they must learn English because all of the communication is in English. Even on the internet, most content is made in English as a median. Anyway, the stereotype is not that all Chinese need to know English, it is that they speak broken English with a heavy accent when they do. Some groups, like arabic speakers, tend to have a very neutral American accent which is easy to understand on the other hand.
I just come back from a 1 month trip to China and I am very impressed. I love the trip and I miss China already. It is a modern, safe and clean country. At least the cities I went to. But yes, it is true that it is difficult to find someone who speaks English (less so in Shanghai).
How were they back then? Also, if that's the case, it just needs some time for growth. Japan is a small country that has been influenced by the West. China is a massive country struck by Western Oppression.
I dont know about japanese in 1980 but now they are super polite but maybe because they lose war so they change a lot but chinese tourist are often the most bad but u know its logic u can find chinese with bad manners more often than japanese with bad manners because China is way bigger than Japan and there are way more chinese people than japanese people overall.

I am sad for some young Chinese people still having no confidence about our own culture. Why we always follow other's path?Few of other nations respect or understand our culture. Why Chinese need to speak good English when others don't know a single Chinese character? Why Chinese cannot eat dog meat when others can eat pork, beef,mutton and chicken? the problem comes from the ones who are in charge of the education system. Many of those people grew up when the economic reform took place, and they got their confidence shattered back then.
1) Self-esteem, for 3000 years (Im starting from the Shang, I know 5000 years blah blah) we thought we were the center of the world, morally, culturally, economically, scientifically and militarily superior to others, and then we get ruled by foreigners for 300 years. So the new Han leadership adopts Western ideas and ways, since it was their ways that broke our 3000 year streak. Do you realize how narcissistic we were back then? You spend 3000 years telling yourself you're the greatest and then someone you perceive as less then you shatters that thought, you'd have issues too. 2) Because English is the global common language, similar to how French was the official court language in Europe (Prussian and Russian rulers only spoke French in their courts) and Chinese (Use of Hanzi in Japan and Korea) in Asia 3) The majority of the world doesn't keep Pigs, Cows, Sheep or Chicken as pets, (albeit there are some). The rest of world roasts India for not eating Cows.

I live in Japan and the Chinese stereotypes here sorround the belief that Chinese people are not community oriented as Japanese people are. It's also said that they are loud messy. Many Asian countries hold negative stereotypes about the others, it is said outside that Japanese people are cold, worry to much about little stuff and are a little bit obsessed with order.

Social pressure here is a big problem, it is so much expected from people in many areas of life, family, work, studies or even friendship :s in the happinness report, done by Canadian universities, happiness in Japan is bellow south American countries.

I loved seeing so many dynamic perspectives. It’s great that people are taking the time to voice their questions that can then be answered by the very group of people they’re inquiring about instead of someone else answering for them. I think that Asian Boss as a whole and us within the community can really help make a difference when it comes to educating ourselves and the world on Asian cultures. I’ll also bust another stereotype: how all Chinese kids need to get good grades. The truth that’s never spoken about is that most Chinese immigrant kids are forced to make up for the disappointment of their parent’s ambitions. When their parents experience a significant decline in their career/social status after moving abroad, often the last beacon of hope to ‘save face’ is for their kid to become a doctor/lawyer/investment banker. Coupled with the fact that they wilfully missed out on the biggest economic boom in recent history, where they would have lived comfortably without all the misery of restarting their lives overseas, their kids are the ones who bear the blunt of their disappointment. Back in the day, it was usually those who had some sort of privilege who even had an opportunity to go abroad. Now their old classmates from university who didn’t take the route of immigration - who they probably thought were beneath them socially - have surpassed them in career/quality of life/family unity/happiness, causing a compounded effect on their level of regret. Which gets offloaded onto their kids… That is not to say life back in China would have been perfect. There is no perfect situation, but they are 100% certain it would have been a lot easier if they just continued on with life back home. The only saving grace is that they can flex the status symbol of living overseas. Only kids like me who have experienced life in both China and the west can see past the gaslighting of our parents. Kids who weren’t born in China don’t have this perspective, as they only know the filtered down negative western media portrayal of China. Only by watching how my cousins grew up in China versus how we grew up here, did I realise this stereotype is mostly a immigrant phenomenon (which was surprisingly similar to the experiences of my friends’ Greek, Indian, Korean, East European parents). It’s definitely true that there are still plenty of kids studying like crazy inside China, but what people don’t know is that they’re mostly from poorer families trying to move up socio-economically. They essentially have to deal with the same struggle overseas kids have. I’m at least more fortunate than them.. Oh yea, in case you think I’m just romanticising about the past, everything I’ve said has been 100% confirmed by my own parents and all their friends living across UK, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand. Trust me, I’ve met more immigrant families than ANYONE. These conversations happen behind closed doors and you won’t have much luck getting the truth out of your own parents. I just happened to be lucky enough to have a very open and honest mother who revealed everything to me. And my family is probably doing a bit better than average if anything... Eventually even my dad confessed all this to me (and that’s saying A LOT). Too bad their friends will never admit this to their own children…

I’ve been to Beijing twice, it’s a very beautiful and interesting city! I honestly feel like it’s my second home after I studied abroad there, and I can’t wait to go back! If you can ever conduct an interview in Beijing, I’d suggest doing it! (if you don’t get in trouble, I mean... ya know...) Who was the reporter doing the interviews on the street? Her credits are not in the description like others are in different videos. Also, she and the two other ladies have amazing English! They spoke so clearly, and they have great vocabulary! I feel like they speak much better English than I do Chinese...
thanks to Asian Boss i learned one major thing: People you interviewed on the streets of Japan, China, Korea... most of them sounded very educated. I like the way they think. I like the way they speak, what words they use. I saw a lot of openmindness in a lot of people, old or young. I really dint expect it to be like that. I used to think that the Asian societies have different ways of thinking and perceiving things as us Europeans or Americans. But I learned its not true and from hearing their answers about society or history, they are very normal, calm, friendly and very educated people with interests and knowledge! Makes me love Asia more.
Good Questions and the answers were also good, the older generation has a different mindset but that is in all countries and cultures. I think the new generation of Chinese men and women will be awesome and friendly. I am coming to China someday so I can see it first-hand.
The reality is that we all have ethnic and cultural biases. You could ask these same individuals what are their stereotypes of different ethnic and cultural groups. It is up to us to decide whether we will rid ourselves of these things and still be proud of who we are.
I feel bad about the manners thing because these people are all clearly respectful and have manners. No worries Chinese bros, it's not all of you. And it will get better.
Shanghai is, like the bigger cities, a spot for many residing foreigners. The English skills are better in those cities because of the contact and business with foreigners. The Chinese I met so far were doing well, sometimes extremely well. They had a big vocabulary and the grammar was good, just the pronounciation and the shyness is not helping. In Japan it's more difficult to find someone who speaks English on a conversation level. The older man is what is needed in these videos. He put things in a historical context.

For the most part stereotypes for any ethnicity/nationality is false. It’s just assumed to be true from media and what people say online. Sure may some might be true in that instance but you can’t/shouldn’t generalize it to be applicable to 100% of the people, 100% of the time. That just makes you ignorant and racist. That’s like saying all East Asians know martial arts, all African Americans and Latinos are gang members or drug peddlers, Italians and Russians are all gang members, etc. Most of the time it’s not true at all. About Chinese people not being able to speak English is false. Most people who were born in the late 1980s and later are very likely to be able speak, read, understand, write, and type in English as with many East Asian countries, English is taught in schools. Well English grammar is. Sometimes they’ll have trouble speaking because what is taught mainly is grammar for the sake of exams in schools and for career reasons. There’s also the necessity to communicate in English among those who are into videogames since many gamers speak English. But those that are currently in their 50s and older may not speak English at all or very little unless their job requires it as it would otherwise be inessential to their everyday living. That thing about Asian eating cats, dogs, etc was true but only during war times or during great famines. It’s not only China. People in South Korea for example also ate dog meat. It’s just viewed as being so disgusting by Western nations because it’s not _normal_ . But it wasn’t normal for people in China and South Korea either. It was out of necessity to survive during those times. Stereotypes are usually false or applicable during extreme circumstances. People shouldn’t make these assumptions and presumptions about people if they haven’t had much or any personal experiences.
When I hear China, I think of the wisdom I've learned from studying things like Taoism and Zen and Kung Fu, the hilarity of Comedy martial arts movies like Jackie Chan, and Kung Fu Hustle, the importance Bruce Lee has had on American culture, awesome food and women who look great in yoga pants. 😁 greetings from America🇺🇸

This is a very truthful report. No comment added and the audience can think for themselves. As a young Chinese, I agree with the people interviewed in the video. There are impolite people and lots of areas of improvement, but what's neglected way too often is the young generation's attempt to be more open-minded and considerate of others. It is a slow process.
When I was in an apartment in China, I was awakened by the English sounds and basketball sounds in the morning. I think that people who speak English are rogue, aggressive and not very intelligent. This is true for most people in English-speaking countries, because most of you cannot afford expensive higher education, and only a few elites are well educated. Due to the government's inaction, your crowd is very sloppy and aggressive, causing great problems for human society. This is why you are on the high seas and you will become pirates. I find this dog meat discussion so pointless. Who says the dog deserves to live more than the pig or the cow? Are Westerners superior because they eat a different animal? Ittthe same thing really if you think about it.
China is a massive country and certainly stereotypes don't apply to all Chinese people of course. Having said that I have to agree with the impression about bad manners though. I travel a lot for business reasons and one thing that really stuck out no matter where I go is that often Chinese tourists just start talking to you in Chinese. When you reply in English and say "I don't speak Chinese, sorry" - they just go on talking to you in Chinese. Another thing is table manners. I really experiences it rather often, when I am in hotels and at breakfast in the morining, that Chinese people very often do not look at the waiters, do not say thank you, often they don't even answer questions with yes or no, and just shake their heads, not looking at the personel asking them if they want more coffee or the like. And, the worst thing for me, is the extremely loud eating habits, like reeeeally smacking loud while eating. That bothers me so much that I sometimes even change the table beause it drives me mad and I personally do find it rude.
I really appreciate these videos but it feels like you're always doing these in Shanghai. Would be nice to see some opinions and views from Beijing and/or the smaller cities inland cheers!
I think videos are very helpful for those of us following you from the West. We misunderstand China because we lack exposure to all of the different perspectives. I enjoy these people-on-the-street interviews. It also helps my (novice level) Mandarin. Thanks!

It only contaminates it with stress hormones that certainly cannot be good for the health. Torturing any animal to death is repulsive but especially mankind's best friend for over 40 thousand years. Why do people think the new generation is the best? I think my grandparents generation is the most educated and polite. My generation is very materialistic and selfish, nobody pursues higher education out of interest anymore. Respect and old traditions are also lost.

Since I’ve been living in Shanghai over thirty years, I can tell that he is just a typical “Shanghai grandpa-上海爷叔”. You can easily find this type of man in any Shanghai neighborhood. Considering his age,and the special time period In China’s history, he probably didn’t even have chance go to university when he’s young.
I taught English online to Chinese students throughout China and I found that kids are kids no matter where they are! haha. Some are so smart and learn quickly, others would rather just forget the whole thing (it's Mom and Dad who want them to learn English - they'd rather play or sleep or do anything - anything!!! - else but sit and hear some woman in the US speak English!). Some kids are very artistic, others not so much, etc., etc. Just like kids in the US. But, I became very close to some of my students and their families, and I plan to visit them when I travel to China next year! .... In the meantime, I'm trying to learn some Mandarin, but I'm afraid I fall into the category of the "not so smart" student! ha.

After studying Chinese in school for so long I stopped believing those common myths, but it was when I actually went last summer that I saw how cool China is. Everyone was SO nice and took care of foreigners. When I spoke Chinese, they were even more open to explain their culture and teach me anything I wanted to know. And people literally got in lines to take pictures with us haha
Olivia Blackmon Yep, if you showed up in an attraction, the Chinese who wanna take photos with you, they are probably visitors from inner cities to that tourism city. They don’t see a foreigner in person usually, therefore they might treat foreigners as someone who live in TV and willing to take photos of you.

I agree on many Chinese tourists being absurdly loud and impolite but I've also met the nicest, kindest, most hard-working Chinese people at school (university) and work so... I don't think the stereotypes are completely true.
Idk pal... younger Chinese people especially students are sooo hardworking and book smart, some are a bit geeky. They also seem to be pretty harmless and get pushed around by the native people. I know a few instances where Chinese kids are being bullied really badly. while the absurdly loud tourists were mostly from the older generations.

@TealAlloy Well how do you know whenever an asian tourist is rude that he/she is Chinese? You don't, but everyone just assumes they are anyways. There have been a few cases of asian tourists (Koreans, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, etc) being rude and they pretend to be Chinese to save their reputations.
TealAlloy i mean all asians are pretty much the same, but chinese from china step it up a level as they have no feelings for others.
Some Chinese tourists are loud and impolite, some are perfect guests. Same for Americans, UK, Germans, Spanish. Italians and French tend to have more good guests than bad ones. Canadians are just lovely. Different people all over the world behave differently.

The implication is, that English is worth learning because the US are a poweful country. Maybe Chinese as a whole disagree with that.

In India there is a much greater population who speak English hence it is easier to learn in such an environment. Plus in different parts of India they speak entirely different languages, so maybe learning English was a need as well??
Also there are countries that are non-anglophone but their language is a lot more similar to English comparing to Mandarin, such as Dutch.
Therefore, your comparison is entirely biased. It will not hold up. To the Chinese, there is a national language (Mandarin). We do not need to speak English in our daily life, so yes maybe we do not get enough practice. A more important reason we speak Chinese is simply because we love it. Why bother speaking a second language when your first language is more concise if needed be, more expressive if needed be, have influence over a great continent and more foreigners are learning it?
Plus, half of these Chinese people can have a conversation in English. How often would you find an American on street and have a conversation with the language they learned in school, regardless of Spanish, Chinese or Japanese?

I'd disagree. Stereotypes don't appear out of nowhere, there is always a basis for them. Russian villains are exception though - it's because of propaganda, not collective observation.
I'm not saying generalizing is right, but statistically speaking,, stereotypes are often true to some degree.

I honestly don't get the dog meat thing, like why do people think eating dogs is so different from eating pigs or cows? People around the world eat all animals, including bunnies, guinea pigs, doves, cats, etc. that are also often kept as pets, so why are people so mad about dogs?
Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's right to eat dogs, but I don't think eating any other sentient being is right either. I just don't get how people can eat other animals but be so shocked about dogs being eaten.
In India, it's a sin to eat beef due to the religion. In Western Countries, it's a sin to eat dogs or a cats because of being pets. It's all based on perception of cultures. China mostly ate it back then due to the Great Famine and when you're starving, you'll eat anything.

Pigs and rats are smarter than dogs, they are much better at problem solving, and considered to be easier to train than dogs. Domestic rats also mirror their owner's emotions and can recognise when a human is sad. They also love being tickled and play hide and seek.
Both cows and chickens develope close friendships with each other, can hold grudges and understand cause and effect - relations.
The only reason you think dogs are more like pets than food is that you've been raised to think that. Research has shown that the more people eat a particular animal, the more likely they are to dismiss that species' intelligence and empathy. Which in turn is a result of our own empathy; it's a lot less painful to hurt animals if we think they are dumb senseless beings, instead of admitting how similar we are to them.

I've met plenty of Chinese people, several of which I've worked alongside. Not ONE of them have ever been disrespectful. In fact, I believe that because of my positive attitude around them, they were able to open up and become more friendly with me. There was an older Chinese man I worked with who always stopped at the front desk, and I'd always stand when he'd enter and shake his hand. On Christmas Eve, he actually brought in a very nice present for me (even though I didn't expect it), and when I read the card, it said, "Thank you for being nice and pleasant toward me, it means a lot." I guess it helps to know a couple Chinese greetings, as well. Haha.

I've met a handful of some disrespectful Chinese people, mostly through work and they're usually the older generation. Although I go to school in NYC with a ton of Mainlanders and all of them seem to be pretty great all around, if you get to know them.

I wondered the same. As a Chinese student in my first year in high school my accent was mocked by other kids and i remember a friend of mine defending me saying something similar to your comment. And those kids actually didn’t stop. People can be so mean

I'm so dubious about stereotypes, being a black woman. However this one - Chinese tourists - is one i used to have until I grew the hell up. It's not about rudeness as much as it is about cultural differences. I mean how someone treats you is usually different on a individual to individual basis, as a woman and a Black woman I've come up against many stereotypes and will throughout my life because of prejudices and ignorant mindsets. However it has given me a better understanding of how not to generalise a whole group of people because of their skin or where they're from, at least not negatively so. I hate it. I also feel embarrassed that they're made to feel ashamed.
Yea if you are black, you should feel us Chinese, bc there are rude black ppl in poorer places but I never generalize all black ppl as a group, I have known many black ppl who are educated and polite

I'm Chinese and I love to travel abroad. I agree that some of the tourists are loud and sometimes they don't obey the rules, which I find it annoying too. But their behaviors cannot be changed overnight neither do I have the power to force them to be polite. All I can do is that I discipline myself, try to set a good example so that gradually they can get improved by seeing what I am doing. Travelling abroad is not just for sightseeing, I think the person is more like a name card of his/her own country, what he/she does sometimes can represent their country's image. So for the Chinese tourists, we really should pay more attention to our behaviors when travelling abroad and let the world know that we can also be polite.

@@karmenwang English is a trade language, needed for a lot of jobs. How can one do business with other countries when most traders use English, often over their native language? If one were to be a pilot, they must learn English because all of the communication is in English. Even on the internet, most content is made in English as a median. Anyway, the stereotype is not that all Chinese need to know English, it is that they speak broken English with a heavy accent when they do. Some groups, like arabic speakers, tend to have a very neutral American accent which is easy to understand on the other hand.
I just come back from a 1 month trip to China and I am very impressed. I love the trip and I miss China already. It is a modern, safe and clean country. At least the cities I went to. But yes, it is true that it is difficult to find someone who speaks English (less so in Shanghai).

I live in Japan and the Chinese stereotypes here sorround the belief that Chinese people are not community oriented as Japanese people are. It's also said that they are loud messy. Many Asian countries hold negative stereotypes about the others, it is said outside that Japanese people are cold, worry to much about little stuff and are a little bit obsessed with order.
Japan is a singular country in all the world. It would be hard for anyone from any culture to live up to Japanese standards.

I’ll also bust another stereotype: how all Chinese kids need to get good grades. The truth that’s never spoken about is that most Chinese immigrant kids are forced to make up for the disappointment of their parent’s ambitions. When their parents experience a significant decline in their career/social status after moving abroad, often the last beacon of hope to ‘save face’ is for their kid to become a doctor/lawyer/investment banker. Coupled with the fact that they wilfully missed out on the biggest economic boom in recent history, where they would have lived comfortably without all the misery of restarting their lives overseas, their kids are the ones who bear the blunt of their disappointment. Back in the day, it was usually those who had some sort of privilege who even had an opportunity to go abroad. Now their old classmates from university who didn’t take the route of immigration - who they probably thought were beneath them socially - have surpassed them in career/quality of life/family unity/happiness, causing a compounded effect on their level of regret. Which gets offloaded onto their kids… That is not to say life back in China would have been perfect. There is no perfect situation, but they are 100% certain it would have been a lot easier if they just continued on with life back home. The only saving grace is that they can flex the status symbol of living overseas. Only kids like me who have experienced life in both China and the west can see past the gaslighting of our parents. Kids who weren’t born in China don’t have this perspective, as they only know the filtered down negative western media portrayal of China. Only by watching how my cousins grew up in China versus how we grew up here, did I realise this stereotype is mostly a immigrant phenomenon (which was surprisingly similar to the experiences of my friends’ Greek, Indian, Korean, East European parents). It’s definitely true that there are still plenty of kids studying like crazy inside China, but what people don’t know is that they’re mostly from poorer families trying to move up socio-economically. They essentially have to deal with the same struggle overseas kids have. I’m at least more fortunate than them.. Oh yea, in case you think I’m just romanticising about the past, everything I’ve said has been 100% confirmed by my own parents and all their friends living across UK, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand. Trust me, I’ve met more immigrant families than ANYONE. These conversations happen behind closed doors and you won’t have much luck getting the truth out of your own parents. I just happened to be lucky enough to have a very open and honest mother who revealed everything to me. And my family is probably doing a bit better than average if anything... Eventually even my dad confessed all this to me (and that’s saying A LOT). Too bad their friends will never admit this to their own children…

thanks to Asian Boss i learned one major thing: People you interviewed on the streets of Japan, China, Korea... most of them sounded very educated. I like the way they think. I like the way they speak, what words they use. I saw a lot of openmindness in a lot of people, old or young. I really dint expect it to be like that. I used to think that the Asian societies have different ways of thinking and perceiving things as us Europeans or Americans. But I learned its not true and from hearing their answers about society or history, they are very normal, calm, friendly and very educated people with interests and knowledge! Makes me love Asia more.
Good Questions and the answers were also good, the older generation has a different mindset but that is in all countries and cultures. I think the new generation of Chinese men and women will be awesome and friendly. I am coming to China someday so I can see it first-hand.

The reality is that we all have ethnic and cultural biases. You could ask these same individuals what are their stereotypes of different ethnic and cultural groups. It is up to us to decide whether we will rid ourselves of these things and still be proud of who we are.

Shanghai is, like the bigger cities, a spot for many residing foreigners. The English skills are better in those cities because of the contact and business with foreigners. The Chinese I met so far were doing well, sometimes extremely well. They had a big vocabulary and the grammar was good, just the pronounciation and the shyness is not helping. In Japan it's more difficult to find someone who speaks English on a conversation level.

It’s just assumed to be true from media and what people say online.
Sure may some might be true in that instance but you can’t/shouldn’t generalize it to be applicable to 100% of the people, 100% of the time.

About Chinese people not being able to speak English is false.
Most people who were born in the late 1980s and later are very likely to be able speak, read, understand, write, and type in English as with many East Asian countries, English is taught in schools.
Well English grammar is. Sometimes they’ll have trouble speaking because what is taught mainly is grammar for the sake of exams in schools and for career reasons.
There’s also the necessity to communicate in English among those who are into videogames since many gamers speak English.
But those that are currently in their 50s and older may not speak English at all or very little unless their job requires it as it would otherwise be inessential to their everyday living.
That thing about Asian eating cats, dogs, etc was true but only during war times or during great famines.
It’s not only China. People in South Korea for example also ate dog meat.
It’s just viewed as being so disgusting by Western nations because it’s not _normal_ .
But it wasn’t normal for people in China and South Korea either. It was out of necessity to survive during those times.
Stereotypes are usually false or applicable during extreme circumstances. People shouldn’t make these assumptions and presumptions about people if they haven’t had much or any personal experiences.

This is a very truthful report. No comment added and the audience can think for themselves. As a young Chinese, I agree with the people interviewed in the video. There are impolite people and lots of areas of improvement, but what's neglected way too often is the young generation's attempt to be more open-minded and considerate of others. It is a slow process.

In london, chinese tourists are very loud most of the time so people don't have a good impression of them.
When I was in an apartment in China, I was awakened by the English sounds and basketball sounds in the morning. I think that people who speak English are rogue, aggressive and not very intelligent. This is true for most people in English-speaking countries, because most of you cannot afford expensive higher education, and only a few elites are well educated. Due to the government's inaction, your crowd is very sloppy and aggressive, causing great problems for human society. This is why you are on the high seas and you will become pirates. If the future of the interstellar era, I have good reason to think that you will become the look of your ancestors, no change.

I find this dog meat discussion so pointless. Who says the dog deserves to live more than the pig or the cow? Are Westerners superior because they eat a different animal? Ittthe same thing really if you think about it.

China is a massive country and certainly stereotypes don't apply to all Chinese people of course. Having said that I have to agree with the impression about bad manners though.
I travel a lot for business reasons and one thing that really stuck out no matter where I go is that often Chinese tourists just start talking to you in Chinese. When you reply in English and say "I don't speak Chinese, sorry" - they just go on talking to you in Chinese.
Another thing is table manners. I really experiences it rather often, when I am in hotels and at breakfast in the morining, that Chinese people very often do not look at the waiters, do not say thank you, often they don't even answer questions with yes or no, and just shake their heads, not looking at the personel asking them if they want more coffee or the like. And, the worst thing for me, is the extremely loud eating habits, like reeeeally smacking loud while eating. That bothers me so much that I sometimes even change the table beause it drives me mad and I personally do find it rude.
I won’t do that my family would never do that but I certainly agree that this happens 🤦♀️

I think videos are very helpful for those of us following you from the West. We misunderstand China because we lack exposure to all of the different perspectives. I enjoy these people-on-the-street interviews. It also helps my (novice level) Mandarin. Thanks!
I’m mostly fine with those stereotypes There’re always bits of truths in stereotypes. Oh and the dog meat thing? I think it’s getting a bit old. Come up with something new... Oh and the older guy’s mannerism reminds me of my grandad :p
The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival tortures dogs to death under the insane superstition that it makes the meat taste better. It only contaminates it with stress hormones that certainly cannot be good for the health. Torturing any animal to death is repulsive but especially mankind's best friend for over 40 thousand years.
Let's come up with something new when this cruel practice has stopped. Go look at the images for the treatment of dogs in Lychee and tell me you want to brush this under the rug.
Angry Applesauce yes I have looked at those videos. I saw the dog market video and it was heartbreaking. Those horrible acts can exist anywhere, the fact it occurs more in certain countries in this case China depends on the culture and the people.

As the video showed attitudes are changing. We should keep up the pressure. If it's used as an ethnic insult that's not okay, but if it leads to more ethical treatment of animals then that's something everyone can be proud of. :)

Why do people think the new generation is the best? I think my grandparents generation is the most educated and polite. My generation is very materialistic and selfish, nobody pursues higher education out of interest anymore. Respect and old traditions are also lost.
Because in China .There are some traditional cultures that are not good. The new generation is educated to throw away these bad cultures.

Ironically, rice isn't the staple food for the majority of Chinese. Northerners (the majority) eat wheat as the staple food.

Since I’ve been living in Shanghai over thirty years, I can tell that he is just a typical “Shanghai grandpa-上海爷叔”. You can easily find this type of man in any Shanghai neighborhood. Considering his age,and the special time period In China’s history, he probably didn’t even have chance go to university when he’s young.
He talks just like my dad😂
The education in China is far greater than many of the Western Countries aside from the Nordic Countries.

These people are actually very nice
I taught English online to Chinese students throughout China and I found that kids are kids no matter where they are! haha. Some are so smart and learn quickly, others would rather just forget the whole thing (it's Mom and Dad who want them to learn English - they'd rather play or sleep or do anything - anything!!! - else but sit and hear some woman in the US speak English!). Some kids are very artistic, others not so much, etc., etc. Just like kids in the US. But, I became very close to some of my students and their families, and I plan to visit them when I travel to China next year! .... In the meantime, I'm trying to learn some Mandarin, but I'm afraid I fall into the category of the "not so smart" student! ha.
Chinese grammar is the easiest!
