I think asians are good at studying not cause they started at an early age or study beside from school, its just bc the levels of pressure and stress to which society subjects the student community. A student studies on average 13 hours a day, counting the hours both in school and outside of it. There is a culture of too great competitiveness in the classrooms, i mean each student wants (or is rather required in their homes) to be number one in everything, which is very difficult to achieve considering that the competition is too great since everyone is looking for the same thing.
I agree with this, in China you are pressured to have good grades and always be a good student because the schools are very strict and many test results are displayed for not just the teachers but the students to see so it's either you work hard and get good grades or you don't try, get humiliated by the teachers and students and probably the worst bit is going home and showing your parents..
Well, im Asian myself, but the studying aspect actually fits in to the “stereotype” that they talk about right after. Physically, Asians are smaller on average than westerners. So when it comes to actually physical labor, we would lose out (which ties into war). That’s why our parents and grandparents emphasize on studying because that is one of a few traits, aspects, that we could compete or do better compared to our non-Asian counterpart.
About the shy thing…we must understand a very important thing: Most Asian countries are rised under confusianism and gregarism principles, that somehow make them more “silent” , they take their time to listen to you, rather than talking first and right ahead. Also they have very interiorized do not disturbing or do anything that could create a conflict with other beings. And so on. So sometimes it might not be about shyness itself, but other principles that make them be a little more cautious and caring for the whole group than for the single person.
"most Asian countries"? No! Only CJK + Singapore. Most Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillipines etc are not under Confucianism.
I can relate to the quiet part (sometimes) because I go down the stairs of my house and my parents don’t notice me so they call me the silent ninja of the house
I think being humble and ‘shy’ is culturally appreciated so a lot of people act shy even when they are internally confident just so they don’t get hate from people around them. Even celebrities have to act humble when they are praised of beauty otherwise they’ll be hated so much.
As an Indian i totally agree with Asians being good at studying because our parents from a very young age put us through that pressure getting good at studies and manners lol.
ok just to tell pisa ranking mai india is last...so it is more of northeast asian thing...to score high mark on an average ... some indians do good thats top 1% of 140 crore will still be significant no. bt on an average we are among the worst
An interesting point about the education when it comes to Europe vs Asia as I’ve experienced in my own life as a half Filipino and half Finnish person, is that societal structures matter. I’ve lived and studied in Finland my entire life. We are often at the top in academics along side Korea and Japan, for example. But usually most students here are quite laid back and study kinda “here and there” and not 13h a day everyday. I think it’s mostly rooted in culture and societal pressures and structures. In Asia, especially countries regarded as 3rd world countries such as the Philippines, I can see why it’s very important to succeed in academics because it might ensure a better and hence easier future. But in Finland, because the government takes care of the citizens in need it isn’t as “live-or-die” here to get to the top when it comes to education. At least that’s how I’ve seen things.
its interesting that as you said finns dont and arent pressured to study as much but are still better ranked than these asian countries. i think it more shows how flawed some studying methods are, like force cramming for hours and such, that most asians countries use
I am the only girl / girls and the only Beauty and the only being reflecting fruits / peaches etc! And, comparing the most ofsv / gx areas of wom’n / hum’ns to such things is beyond disrespectful to food! And a peach shape has nada to do with the most ofsv areas of hum’ns, yk! Peaches are a pure element that implies edibility and purity! Disrespecting foods and big term misuse is general must be b4nned before TNW!
As a Chinese I can say Niki's high height is probably from some certain northern area in China, in fact people especially from Shandong, Beijing etc. could be very tall. If you are in a southern university and there is a girl student from those northern provinces, you may find that she could be taller than many men in the university, looks like a European.
I can prove that. I'm from eastern Shandong, studied in Beijing for 4 yrs, and now working in western Shandong. Personally I'm 186cm(6'1), while many friends of mine are even taller🧐 cuz most Northerners in China have breads, buns or noodles as staples, instead of rice, which contain more calories
I heard that too… as I’ve worked with chinese girls, was shocked to see why they are too tall for the chinese image. and most of then says that there are lots of taller people up northern part of China? and most of them were from there. lots of Tall and pretty girls they say, lots of chinese models came from there too they said.
Seems like you Chinese from the northern provinces have us white Americans beat when it comes to tall height in my experience as well as a white American man. 6'0" or taller men and 5'7" or taller women look alot more common with northern Chinese then with white Americans. Alot of tall Europeans from the Netherlands, the Scandinavian countries and the Slavic countries but with most other European countries with their ethnicities us Europeans and European Americans really aren't that tall on average and shorter on average then the northern Chinese. Northern Chinese people will feel tall in most of Europe and in North America compared to white Americans and most other Americans as well.
We have a guy at work who is from Shandong Province and he is tall (185cm). I have two nephews who have Chinese wives ( they met in China) and both of those women are tall and are from the North. When I worked in China it was fairly obvious that the Cantonese speakers were generally shorter than those from the North. i think that it may a fair generalisation is that Chinese who eat rice are shorter than those who eat noodles.
never seen one like her too. she sometimes project as trying to impress everyone around her. kinda annoying sometimes, based on a few videos I’ve already seen.
8:51 That moon walk was so smooth, and I think these sort of videos are quite interesting on knowing as well as comparing different insights in plenty of cultures.
As a Japanese I have to say, all these stereotypes have the reason or origin, not just made of null. We ARE shorter than Dutch people for sure, our average IQ is higher than the US, we do feel shy comparing to like Aussies. Stereotypes can exist, but it just shouldn’t be used in bad way.
If you were Asian nations and shorter height than average height, you should find yourself considering the pros and cons differently and show that you have already been second to none from other aspects... That's how to overcome the Asians' defects, I believe
I personally had a stereotype w.r.t Japanese people. It is like Japanese tend to hide their emotions and not to express their feelings. But in this video the Japanese girl changed my thought about Japanese. She looked confident and her speech was nice.
All the girls in the video were for East and Southeast Asia, I wish there were some from other parts of Asia like India, Iran, etc. Most people think that there are no other countries in Asia. :)
@@gilyanajune7081 No, it depends on the region. for USA, asians are east and south-east asians. For UK or europe in general, asians are south-asians. In reality, anyone from asia is an asian. East asia follows the USA version.
@@kamalkumar7978 Not only for the USA, but also for Eastern Europe, Asia is Mongoloids (Northeast, East and Southeast Asians), for Russia also Central Asia (Turks are half Mongoloids). It is clear that for some countries of Europe and Britain - Asia are also their former colonies and immigrants from these countries, of which there are many in Europe.
@@kamalkumar7978 But Asians are also the second name of the Mongoloid race. And Asia is the East, the easternmost for the West is the Far East (East-West dichotomy). So it will not be logically surprising that this region is often meant.
@@gilyanajune7081 it just depends on how Asians got introduced to different parts of the world. Japan considers east and southeast asians as asians except themselves. For Britain and some european countries, southeast and east asians are Orientals and Indians are Asians. Reality is that its a continental identity. It doesn't have anything to do with race. Infact, the some of the original natives of the USA also have mongoloid features but they are just called as Natives and not Asians.
"Asians are small" and then I look directly to Niki from China 🇨🇳 😂 , a really tall girl 👧 and then Saki from Japan saying "she is so tall" and Saki is so small, at least compared to Nikki , loved the video
@@AltaiAustro-Hungarian You sure sexy looking, too, but hey I suppose it's meant as the average height or the frequently empirically observed heights amongst places in Asia, particularly in East Asia, South East Asia and South Asia..Yeah..Good that have been settled down and clarified,I suppose 🙃😉✌️👌🌈💎
@@AltaiAustro-Hungarian that's because you're central Asian, the stereotype refers to east Asians and especially to southeast asians, you can statistically verify by looking at average heights of east Asian countries that they are usually smaller than Europeans and Africans
As an Asian person, Filipino in particular, I definitely think Asians are good at studying but not due to starting education earlier than Westerners. It's definitely societal pressure. Even if you're from a richer Asian country, you still get that pressure from your family. For me however, I'm not good at studying as my parents didn't pressure me as much and I just got out of the pandemic in the Philippines where we've been studying at home for 2 years. My parents just want me to do the bare minimum and be responsible so that's proof of how societal pressure can affect your habits. I study in the Netherlands and so far my grades are VERY average, nothing special. A lot of my Indian classmates are studious but I don't know if it's due to the expectations of their parents. I wish I can do better but half of me can't get itself to do more things but knowing I'm surviving AND especially learning some things is what matters the most to me. I don't want grades to affect me as I stopped caring about them for the most part during the pandemic. Getting a high grade would definitely make me feel great though, my grades in Dutch and German (I'm a beginner at both) are higher compared to my other grades but I'm pretty happy with that already. It's like a little boost of joy. I'm at school right now and our first period got canceled so I'm just here watching videos LOL
I really appreciate that the participants can talk about differences and just talk about their experiences. No one should use differences as an excuse to be rude to others.
Not to brag or anything but many Asians are either bi-lingual or tri-lingual due to the linguistic diversity of the continent and the countries within Asia. India and Indonesia alone have hundreds of languages, and so are countries in other regions of Asia.
Many of my Asian friends especially women say their cultures look down on speaking up for yourself, drawing attention to yourself and being assertive. I think maybe that’s why many people perceive them as shy.
About the studying, me personally I think about how my parents would view me. I’m a full Filipino who lives in the USA and the education here is a bit slower than how my parents have gone through. I don’t want my parents to be upset with my grades and with my hard work so this is why I study hard. My gpa is a 4.0 atm 😅
On the shyness stereotype, I think it is because of the social norms common in a lot of Asian countries where like in Japan people might be less touchy feely and might look down on public displays of affection like hugging between members of the opposite sex. Also, in the U.S. we tend to call even sometimes strangers by their first name, while in Japan, even friends might call each other by their last name.
9:42 - Seong-Ji caught my attention in those videos, but this move right there shows trully how beautiful of a person she is 😊🤍 As she said in one of the episodes: "Where do you find these people?" - Where can I find "people" like you? 😊
I found that Asian also have got much stereo type toward to westerner. Huge. so it's very important knowing each other or trying to understand differences.
Good at learning book knowledge = less creative advancements Lot of creative freedom = not knowing the things learned from the past. Finding that sweet middle spot is very difficult for countries.
6:35 this made me think about that stereotype. Here in Spain there is a stereotype that we are extroverted, loud and very social. In Spanish society, it's true that being an extrovert is well regarded and being an introvert is "frowned upon". (not exactly frowned upon, but I get treated worse for being an introvert than an extrovert and I get made fun of for it a lot, and i even can socialize easily) I always thought that why do others think all Asians are shy when a lot of them aren't. Asians when they don't feel comfortable with their English/another language, they tend to speak less. But with Spanish people it doesn't happen. Even though they don't know how to speak any English, they still try to communicate and at the same time make people laugh. It doesn't matter if our level of English is very basic, we're going to keep talking a lot anyway hahahaha
It’s funny you say that about Spain, because you guys are so extroverted as a culture I’ve oftener joked that if you’re born an introvert in Spain, you’re destined to be the Prime Minister 😂 (that’s how rare it seems to meet an introvert from Spain)
This was lovely; I agree stereotypes depends on cases; but I also think they’re base by base. Historically, asians work extra efforts to get where they are, and hard-earned skills get inherited/developed/advanced through time with continued attitude/culture. Same idea with behavioural stereotypes (shyness etc.) - can be attributed to numerous past experiences. The takeaway is that what makes you you is because you’re you💜; hope you’re proud of yourselves, my asian sisters.
7:11 The people of the Philippines are the friendliest most welcoming people I have ever met. Very often I have gone to a beach resort and a group of guys are sharing drinks and will invite me to join them even though I don't know them.
I’m Latino but I really love asians people and their culture. I always felt and always told myself I would love to be part of Asian culture. It’s just to beautiful and also how education is primordial. Asian people inspire me a lot to be better of myself tbh. Even tho I’m so proud to be Latino , my second favourite community would be Asians. And their food 🤤👌😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨😮💨 OH MY GOSH. But yeah it’s very nice and beautiful to see all these differences asians that come together in one place no matter the wars that had happened in the past, I can only see peace among them and it’s beautiful🤍🤍
I think it boils down to history. I am not sure why no one mentioned this but confucianism and history is deeply integrated in east asian societies and other societies living in sinosphere.
As a Vietnamese-American, my two cents (and how I compare): Asians are good at studying- disagree. Although it might appear that most Asians are good at studying, a better statement would be that most Asian cultures ingrain the conscientiousness in academics (as most of the participants reiterated). However, the results reflect differently and not all Asians receive stellar grades or demonstrate academic excellence like people anticipate. So it certainly depends. In other countries, there's a fair share of students who perform well academically and others who are not so much so. Asians are no exception and it'd be unfair to generalize everyone that way. (Although for me, I kinda reinforce that stereotype as a top honors student since high school.) Asians are small- agree (half). Statistically, the body frames for Asians tend to be smaller than other countries, but with improvements in nutrition, that balance is slowly equalizing. The tallest Asian country (as a whole) is South Korea, with an average height of 172.5 cm for men and 159.6 cm for women (encompassing all adult age groups; the highest average is 174.9 cm for men in their 30s and 161.9 for women in their 30s). Yet, compared to other Western hemisphere countries, South Korea is shorter, but not significantly so. The weights and body measurements tend to be a little smaller, although like everything, there are exceptions, even among Asians. There are big or tall Asians too. In fact, some of the tallest basketball and volleyball players come from China. (As for me, I kinda buck that trend as I'm 171-2 cm and have pretty developed treasures. Although my bone structure tends to be smaller so even though I'm above average in height, I give a more petite impression. Where I would be considered a little below average in size in Western standards, I would be pretty above average in Asian standards. I tend to order a size Large in Asia, and even sometimes, the largest size doesn't fit me. 😕) There is still racism against Asians in the world- agree. It's a sad fact, but when you see other Asians get attacked for being "responsible" for the pandemic, what does that say? Also, the racism against Asians has been historical, from the U.S. passing a Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 or even today, when many Asians are passed over in employment opportunities. And let's not forget the fetishization of Asian women, which has its origins in gendered and racist notions on Asian women's submission and servility. Asians are shy- disagree. Likewise, it's a cultural basis. Some are not predisposed to gregarious behavior but nor is that any indication that Asians are shy. Like some of the participants reiterated, language barrier contributes a lot to that impression, though if another person were to be quieter upon entering a country whose language they don't understand, they don't receive the same judgment of being shy. Try seeing Asians interact in their native languages and you'll notice that even among them, there are people who are more outgoing among the lot. Asian cultures are not as famous as the U.S.- agree. K-pop is gaining global renown, but just the impressions of other Asian countries' traditional cultures are not, unfortunately 🙁 Though the Hallyu wave has made more people around the world more interested in Korean traditional culture and history, that isn't always the case for Asian countries. Even I'm from Vietnam and the impressions I get when people think about Vietnam is 1. Phở 2. Vietnam War 3. Áo dài. We Vietnamese certainly take pride in our cuisine and clothing, but I don't think we should be reduced to only those. Our culture is much more diverse and complex than many people would think. A lot of what is diverse, complex, and beautiful about Asian cultures gets undermined by simplistic impressions that arise out of ignorance, frankly. Even many people around the world have a hard time distinguishing East Asian traditional clothing- like when some respondents to an interview thought the interviewers were from Japan and China even though they were wearing hanbok.
Agreed as a Korean living in America. Asians have smaller width - this relates to the chest and hip size. Arms and legs are shorter as well. This is the reason many East Asians can’t slamdunk even if some can jump as high as any ethnics. Smaller hands too. But even between Asians, there is difference amongst countries. People from South East Asia may have longer arms and bigger eyes. Heights depend on where they live - north or south. Chinese have very different average heights between north and south. Personality really depends. This is where the stereotypes are made for Asians living in America. They as a group would grow up more timid because they find they look different, sometimes are treated differently, get the stereotypes and think they belong to that category (this reinforces). There are some traits that make Asian Americans look less shy in some areas though. Koreans in Korea have this streotypes that Korean Americans are less shy.
The Vietnamese girl's name, unless it's how she is really named, it's more likely that it's written wrong. It's Linh instead of Lihn. It happens to me too.
you need to include Middle Eastern(Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Iran etc) and ex-USSR(Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan etc.) countries since they are technically Asian. Then the answers would be vary, including the height-shape of body-type etc.
In many areas of the U.S., people are actively assimilating many aspects of Asian cultures, especially the cuisines and visual arts, gaming, popular music, etc. Even Asian literature is becoming more widespread in the U.S. In the county where I live, there is a large Korean-American community, so we are lucky to have multiple Korean restaurants (I'm talking upwards of 20 of them), Korean bakeries, etc. That has generated a critical mass to attract Chinese hot-pot, Vietnamese pho shops, Japanese ramen, etc. And that's on top of the mass media, k-pop, anime and gaming culture that is massively present, especially for young people in the U.S.
That’s because Trends and Culture Appreciation go in cycles. Everyone has gotten tired of idolizing Europe so America started looking else where and began admiring Japan and Korea. (Last time this happened was the early 1800’s)
As an asian, I'll have to agree on "asians are good at studies", but this mostly is in the culture. From my experience, I had already started learning some letters and counting to 100 from a very young age, even before I had started school ( but if I'm being honest, I used to keep on forgetting). My parents just to make me study with all my might so that I wouldn't forget things and improve my intelligence. They had also made me study very well in order to pass my exams and many more. Actually this has paid off as I had became the 2nd topper of my class.
All of these women have a fantastic grasp of the English language, not only in the grammatical sense, but also culturally. Usually it's a little annoying to hear other Americans use the word 'like' a lot when they're speaking, but the fact that everyone here uses 'like' like a native English speaker would speaks volumes to their skills. Awesome to learn new things from everyone!
@marygumbearlee Actually most Americans don't really know any other language other than English, simply becuz its convenient. Even an Asian would speak English to other Asian because its the only mutual langauge they can speak in most cases.
asian height can also be attributed to things like food in the past, there is a height difference between north and south koreans, very similar cuisine, but after scarcity of food for a couple generations the heights dropped
As a chinese, I wouldn't say that I'm small. I think it just depends on what you eat and what environment you grow up in. Obviously it also depends on who you are related to. For example, I'm only 11 but I'm 1.65 metres or around 5'4.
Statistic isn’t just about YOU, it is as a whole. Pick 10 random people off the street, 10 Chinese and 10 Americans, and compare sizes. You will see how we (yes, I’m also Chinese) are statistically smaller. You being 1.65 at 11, are far above the avg.
I think it has something to do with the economy. As the economy starts to grow and become better, younger generations become taller than older generations. I personally noticed it in our country. Highschoolers in the Philippines these days are taller than most uncles.
@@JackY-tz3rs 10 random people - yeah, Chinese will be smaller. Pick ten young people and I am not so sure, especially if they are from Northern China.
As an overseas Chinese, I believe Chinese average height is getting taller, but the westerners are also getting taller Like the normal Chinese height for young people will be 175-185, but the young Caucasians are around 180-190
Asians are good at maths due to the way they count numbers in their languages. I can't explain it exactly but the way they say numbers makes it easier to work out sums for them. Plus their parents breath down their necks through childhood
2:04 I moved from Calif USA to the Philippines in 2010. One of the things I found better is that in the USA I'm smaller than my own race (white), when I moved to the Philippines there are a lot of women my size. I found my cute wife nere.
I bet the Filipino woman was thinking of mentioning racism of Koreans towards Filipinos but took a step back when she got to “there’s racism everywhere even-“.
@@MyPoincare we dont consider indians as asians, accept the fact that indians are different race as (chinese, korean, japanese, thai, filipino, viet). Just call yourself indians
In the Philippines tho, education is like a job.. we go in by 7 am, then 30 mins morning snack, lunch break, 30 mins afternoon snack, then finally out by 4 pm. I got a backpack that time and it was loaded with all the books, notebooks, and like pencils erasers and etc that was needed for the day... it continued til highschool then college is a different thing so yeah
10:26 this has almost nothing to do with the video but ni hao kai-lan was my absolute favourite show as a toddler, i don’t know, i’m just happy to hear it mentioned but yes, asia is the largest continent in world and as the song says, “more than half of the world lives there but whatever” so many stereotypes generalized as asian, many to keep track of and difficult to see whether accurate or no
In USA, Asian cultures are being identified depending on the state or city's Asian population, for example, San Francisco, Orange County, Los Angeles, Florida, and Hawaii, there are spikes nos of Asians. Me and my classmates here in Los Angeles are fully aware of Asian culture, we just love the Panda Express and Chinese Fast To Go Restaurants.
Around 3:50 when they're talking about size and I just want to say, the Asian that said Europeans have it easier to get sexy, heck nah! You Asians are wow!!!😳 Like omg we may be curvier but you guys are a lot more elegant and beautiful.
stereotypes tend to come from a tend that people to observe in people. They become a problem when you start to suggest that the reason why this person is the way they are is because of immutable characteristic like race or that all of them are like this. Half my family Italian, and yes, they are loud and so are most of their Italian friends. The other side of my family is black, and yes, they are also pretty loud, along with their black friends. However when it comes to actual trends in genetic make up. We know that different races have physical characteristics that distinguish them because thats what race is to begin with. So yes, some races tend to be taller than others. Asians particular tend to be shorter on average than other ethnicities.

It's a pity that when the culture question came up they so concentrated on k-pop and modern culture. East Asia has such a rich history and with that a rich culture. Everyone knows about the Buddhist temples of Thailand or the Samurai of Japan, the Forbidden Palace in China let alone the Wall or Angkor Wat in Cambodja. Don't sell yourself short. Culture is much more than music and food. As a European I don't think about those when talking about our culture, I think of the Renaissance and even the ancient Romans and Greeks. I think about art, achitecture, phylosophy. Asian culture is even older than ours and more known than many of these girls seem to realize. Who doesn't know Buddha or Confucius? Who doesn't know Hinduism or Taoism? The Eastern Asian modesty. One of the oldest civilizations, one of the richest history and culture and they think they are not well known. It's charming but at the same time a little bit sad as well. Be proud of your heritage just like everyone should.
Being naturally talented towards academics goes hand in hand with starting early and committing long hours to it. It even affects parents attitudes towards pushing their child's education. If a child is struggling, it's no fun working hard and he or she will lose interest. Paying for an expensive education where the student flounders will appear a poor investment.
My thoughts on 10:24 as a half Indonesian: I used to think that people would know Indonesians especially since I’m in Australia which is very close (I know this video is about us but still) and it’s not that people don’t know us exactly it’s more so that they don’t know us as Asian or part of Asia which makes me kinda sad because I’ve had white people call me a Pacific Islander and saying that “Indonesia is part of India” which is stupid because they think that India also isn’t part of Asia 💀 or “Indonesia is part of Africa” and they don’t know a lick of the language despite usually learning it at school here and I think westerners should try to do better. It doesn’t have to be mandatory but if they don’t know where it is, maybe just ask???? It’s not that hard.
it's because their geography is so bad Lol. Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country that is most clearly visible on the map, even if they don't know much about Indonesia at least they can tell where it is located
As a northeastern Chinese (AKA Manchuria area)from a very high lattitude area,we are pretty tall and big size.and we are really humorous and open personality, sometimes when I travel to south EU,I found most people are shorter than us.... so not all Asians are small.
Tall height western Europeans tend to be in the north, especially with the Dutch. Most of the rest of western Europe isn't really tall. Not short but not tall either. We aren't that tall as European Americans either. Notice that when Chinese from their northern regions visit the USA on vacation or on a business trip that they look taller on average then us European Americans. Other regions of people in central and western Asia make us European Americans look shorter as well like with the Punjabi and the Persians. Africans have several tribes or populations that are taller to alot taller then European Americans and a majority of Europeans in western Europe as well. The Dinka, Maasai, Tutsi and Wolof and probably other African tribes or populations tower over us European Americans and most of western Europe. Several native American tribes are noticeably taller than us European Americans in these Indian Reservations. The Cheyenne tribe in particular looks atleast 6'0" on average for men and in their history have thought of the white, European race as short people.
In Asian countries the school system is run like a military system lol. There are strict policies and rituals that students have to abide by on a daily basis, they enforce respect and place importance on study. Tests are also all of your score so the greater enthesis on study means cram schools are popular. Asian countries also place more importance on extracurricular activities, clubs and so on so most students spend most of their free time around school still. It's just a much better environment for creating good studying habits and students who are focussed on it compared to how relaxed schools in Europe and America are. School has a greater importance in Asia and your life is over if you don't get good grades. Western schools are closer to how university is in Japan. Much more based on work and your own projects. You can take as long as you want to finish as long as you keep paying the fees lol. It's just schools that are super obsessive and strict because getting good results and stats makes your school richer.
Japanese/Chinese American girl here. Idk if i agree with that? As far as asian culture goes...we had anime and manga but I'm from Hawaii which is like American Asia. So thing's like Anime, Manga, Drifting,Bon dancesand more was pretty common here. But I'm talking about my island where white people are the minority and Asains make up a larger chunk of the majority. As far as the rest of the mainland America? Not really sure exactly when they knew found out about our culture? But most Asian Americans grew up with our culture maybe a little different. There is a difference between Asian American culture and Asian culture theo. Just don't know when white people started liking our culture?
On the topic of Asians being good at studying. The book Outliers tells a convincing story on why that is "In chapter eight, “Rice Paddies and Math Tests,” Malcolm Gladwell continues to support his claim that cultures can have significant impacts on various levels and aspects of success. He takes an in-depth look into the work ethics of farmers in southern China and reveals how rice cultivation can be an intricate, laborious, and, if done well, rewarding process for an entire family. And over long periods of time, the processes and culture of rice cultivation appear to yield benefits to a people well beyond the farms. According to Gladwell, rice farmers, the majority of whom have limited resources, improved the returns on their labor by “becoming smarter, by being better managers of their own time, and by making better choices.” In other words, more than simply working hard, they worked intelligently and strategically. Gladwell proposes that cultures “shaped by the tradition of wet-rice agriculture and meaningful work” tend to produce students with the fortitude to “sit still long enough” to find solutions to time-consuming and complex math problems, for instance. " It goes into further detail than that, comparing the culture and daily lives of an European peasant vs a rice paddy farmer, I recommend reading the book. More anecdotally... I can remember spending 1-2 hours on some math concept/problem because I couldn't understand it and finally solving it in the end. You don't forget how to solve a problem like that ever again after putting in that kind of effort once. As Indonesian, I think I have to disagree to Aya about our shyness and our culture. A lot of Indonesians actually aren't shy, we just have language difficulty with foreign people. So, when a foreigner comes to our country, some of us probably won't get closer or start a conversation because we're afraid if we say something wrong in English. But still, many of us are actually talkative and likes to talk to foreigner with our standard English. Also for the culture part, I'd say Bali is the perfect example that shows that we actually quite famous (even though maybe some foreigner didn't know that Bali is in Indonesia). For addition, with "beef rendang" that got awarded as best food in the world by CNN in 2011, Indonesian's culture is actually pretty well known in my opinion 😊
I'm align with this statement. We're Indonesian, basically talkative to strangers and many of us are not that shy. Nevertheless, again, we have a bit trouble with the couragement of talking in english. CMIIW!
Agree. It's more difficult to find shy Indonesians to be honest. I'm more reserved myself but not shy at all while I can say that the majority of Indonesians around me are not reserved (like at all).
For culture part.. Nope.. Indonesian culture isn't well known compare to US.. Most foreigner only know Bali.. So thats a small part of indonesian culture.. And just because of 2 food (nasi goreng and rendang) doesn't mean indonesian culture as a whole is well known.. You can't say indonesian culture is well known, if most foreigner only know about Bali and rendang 😅
Cause they're not. God I hate the word 'stereotypes'. Even in this video, the woman says statistically Asians study more than Westerners, but when talking about asians being small, she says you shouldn't generalize and it's individualistic. So when it's a negative about yourself, its called a 'stereotype', but when it's not, it's called a 'statistic'? Statistically Asians have smaller dicks and tits on average, and yes just like study habits there's a bell curve distribution, but let's not obscure the truth and use the 'racism' card the moment it becomes convenient for your racial group.
Stereotypes are based on preconceptions, which may or may not be accurate. They're ultimately mental shortcuts more than anything, not based in malice. You can have them about _any_ perceived category of people: nerds, jocks, geeks, goths, men, women, etc. Racism is based on hatred of the out-group, mixed with a sense of superiority of the in-group. It is an ingrained behavior/mode of thinking, so it is much more difficult to alter the bearer's attitude. You can see how they can sometimes overlap, but they definitely should not be considered synonymous!
@@malakatan3235 a stereotype is that westerners are tall(er). Is that malice? Another steoreotype is that Asians are smarter. Is that malice? I’m Asian, I don’t see that an malicious at all. Lol
I have watched a lot of interviews in Japan and it seems like most people there are pretty comfortable expressing their opinions and thoughts so idk where the stereotype of Japanese people being shy comes from. Maybe just because of keigo? Idk. Also I think USA culture is so well known because entertainment is our biggest export whereas other countries give more to the world than mainly showing off their culture. Peace and love to everyone out there in world!
@@carilaeeduardo3055 I can’t really point to anything specific. I was just saying what life is like in the USA may be more well known to people in other countries because of the movies and TV here being so accessible outside the USA. Whereas in the USA other countries’ movies and TV aren’t really broadcast here. So we don’t know as much about life in other countries. But I’m sure there are plenty of places where people don’t know much about the USA too
I married a Filipino-Chinese woman. She had three children, two Physicians and one Nurse. They didn’t succeed because they were Asian, but because they studied hard. Their mother had very high expectations and put a lot of pressure on them to succeed.
I mean they are often refered to by a regional name. Like Arabs, Persians, Turkic people or Indians. It's the same with Africa, when we think of Africans we think of those South of the Sahara.
About the last question about US culture being better known than Asian culture in general, it's true. Everyone in the world has some, at least, minor idea about US culture by watching series, TV shows, political issues, gloablization, etc., but for Asian cultures there's not much information about it in too many other countries in the world apart of K-pop and dramas, and, to me, K-pop and dramas are not really Asian culture, it's just a very tiny part of Asian culture. They have so many traditions, behavioral aspects, ways of thinking, social manners, etc. that are COMPLETELY different from Western countries in general and that I'd love those were shown more all around the world... There's too much more about Asian culture that I feel it's more important and interesting to know than K-pop and dramas (I'm not complaining on those two aspects because I love K-pop music (I listen to Koren artists everyday and the whole day
The Filipina mispronounces a lot of words e.g. racism and there are so many breaks (pauses) in speaking. The Korean girl pronounces better than her. And she's the shortest among all Asian rep. Honestly, listening to each country's rep, the ladies I find quite fluent in English despite of accents are Korean, Japanese, and Thai. With exception of mispronunciation, they have a good English vocabulary.

@Rain Shin The subject here was Juan saying that Filipina is a good speaker, Juan didn't say anything about other races except for the Filipina. Juan didn't mentions Thai. So, our Focus is the Filipina rep and she has a lot of hard mispronunciations and space gaps. So, aint really a good speaker. But can communicate so far.
I'm an European girl, quite small and very shy. But I think, I always had this interest in Asian culture, since I was maybe 5 years old and watched some anime on TV about samurais, or "Spirited Away" by Hayao Miyazaki.
I appreciate the word "like" so much. For Americans it's slang but for foreigners it's a way to fill in a language gap and give you some confidence to take a moment and continue.
Slang is when you substitute an informal word with a faddish one. People abusing "like" is them continuing to speak rather than pause to think since silence is, apparently, the Devil. I don't appreciate this mannerism at all.
I use the word "like" a lot in my conversation. I use it when I don't know how to say some sentence which arose in my mind and this word gives me a break to think what to say next😅 . Being a non-native speaker ,this also gives me some confidence when I speak English instead of saying nothing.
@@r0bw00d It's rare you will find a language that lacks filler words. It's something intrinsic to language. Even Japanese has filler words. For how carefully they conduct themselves, you'll be hard-pressed to find someone not use "ano", "nanka", or "toka" at least once.
About the Vietnamese girl, her name is Linh, not LihnWell, whether you guys know this or not, MANY and MANY Vietnamese people feel uncomfortable when their names are written in a wrong way!!!
Yea, also it's honestly booksmart
I agree with this, in China you are pressured to have good grades and always be a good student because the schools are very strict and many test results are displayed for not just the teachers but the students to see so it's either you work hard and get good grades or you don't try, get humiliated by the teachers and students and probably the worst bit is going home and showing your parents..
@@iynewz sounds like hell. We only study 6 hours a day in the west and enjoy childhood
@@millevenon5853 yeah It’s not so bad anymore because I moved to USA and since then, things have been pretty chill
The Asian countries ur talking about are in the east. West Asian and south Asian countries are not shy
good reason to not appreciate asians.
I can relate to the quiet part (sometimes) because I go down the stairs of my house and my parents don’t notice me so they call me the silent ninja of the house
I think its because asians are conservative thats why so they dont just reveal their self to people immediately which confuses as asians are 'shy'
I think being humble and ‘shy’ is culturally appreciated so a lot of people act shy even when they are internally confident just so they don’t get hate from people around them. Even celebrities have to act humble when they are praised of beauty otherwise they’ll be hated so much.

At least that’s how I’ve seen things.
so it's finland vs Asia
In france it's like in china, you have to study all the time because there's competition, it's an elitist system
Late comment but as half Thai and half Finnish I agree with you
Aye as half filipina and half finnish too i agree as well
its interesting that as you said finns dont and arent pressured to study as much but are still better ranked than these asian countries. i think it more shows how flawed some studying methods are, like force cramming for hours and such, that most asians countries use

Personally I'm 186cm(6'1), while many friends of mine are even taller🧐
cuz most Northerners in China have breads, buns or noodles as staples, instead of rice, which contain more calories
Northern Chinese people will feel tall in most of Europe and in North America compared to white Americans and most other Americans as well.
fr i would assume shes northern chinese.

I think a lot of times being more reserved and polite as a culture is mistaken for "shyness."
I really appreciate that the participants can talk about differences and just talk about their experiences. No one should use differences as an excuse to be rude to others.
I really am so impressed by how people can learn new languages, like they pronounce things so well, all of them. Good job!
Not to brag or anything but many Asians are either bi-lingual or tri-lingual due to the linguistic diversity of the continent and the countries within Asia. India and Indonesia alone have hundreds of languages, and so are countries in other regions of Asia.
Just love Saki's personality! 😃
She's definitely not your typical quiet, shy Asian type.
Maybe that's because she's lived in Ireland... and she has a little bit different personality from other Japanese...
Many of my Asian friends especially women say their cultures look down on speaking up for yourself, drawing attention to yourself and being assertive. I think maybe that’s why many people perceive them as shy.
I assume saki is from osaka, out going japanese
9:42 - Seong-Ji caught my attention in those videos, but this move right there shows trully how beautiful of a person she is 😊🤍
As she said in one of the episodes: "Where do you find these people?" - Where can I find "people" like you? 😊
I found that Asian also have got much stereo type toward to westerner. Huge. so it's very important knowing each other or trying to understand differences.
Good at learning book knowledge = less creative advancements
Lot of creative freedom = not knowing the things learned from the past.
(not exactly frowned upon, but I get treated worse for being an introvert than an extrovert and I get made fun of for it a lot, and i even can socialize easily)
I always thought that why do others think all Asians are shy when a lot of them aren't.
This was lovely;
I agree stereotypes depends on cases; but I also think they’re base by base.
Historically, asians work extra efforts to get where they are, and hard-earned skills get inherited/developed/advanced through time with continued attitude/culture. Same idea with behavioural stereotypes (shyness etc.) - can be attributed to numerous past experiences.
The takeaway is that what makes you you is because you’re you💜;
hope you’re proud of yourselves, my asian sisters.
As a Vietnamese-American, my two cents (and how I compare):
Asians are good at studying- disagree. (Although for me, I kinda reinforce that stereotype as a top honors student since high school.)
Asians are small- agree (half). 😕)
There is still racism against Asians in the world- agree.
A lot of westerners are taller.

You can even argue the west prefers Japanese games more than American.
That’s because Trends and Culture Appreciation go in cycles. Everyone has gotten tired of idolizing Europe so America started looking else where and began admiring Japan and Korea. (Last time this happened was the early 1800’s)

THAILAND IS SO PRETTY!!!!!
I'm Filipino but i really admire biz from Thailand. damn she's such a fine beautiful lady.. I fell inlove with her the moment i saw her in this video.

@mary “gumbear” lee english is not the official language of the usa son
@marygumbearlee Actually most Americans don't really know any other language other than English, simply becuz its convenient. Even an Asian would speak English to other Asian because its the only mutual langauge they can speak in most cases.

asian height can also be attributed to things like food in the past, there is a height difference between north and south koreans, very similar cuisine, but after scarcity of food for a couple generations the heights dropped
Asia consist of many countries but the asia of the Internet only consist of Japan, Korea and china
Yeah, Japan, Korea and China can only represent east Asia, there are still Middle East and South Eastern Asia
I was the same height at that age , now over twenty and still the same height.
As an overseas Chinese, I believe Chinese average height is getting taller, but the westerners are also getting taller

Koreans and Chinese are quite tall actually

Indians aren't asian
Being from an asian country, i would say that some stereotypes are true & some are not true.

The book Outliers tells a convincing story on why that is
"In chapter eight, “Rice Paddies and Math Tests,” Malcolm Gladwell continues to support his claim that cultures can have significant impacts on various levels and aspects of success.
It goes into further detail than that, comparing the culture and daily lives of an European peasant vs a rice paddy farmer, I recommend reading the book.
More anecdotally... I can remember spending 1-2 hours on some math concept/problem because I couldn't understand it and finally solving it in the end. You don't forget how to solve a problem like that ever again after putting in that kind of effort once.
Where as the behaviors of most of my none-asian counter parts that did get stuck on something, either quickly gave up, protesting it's difficult. Or sought someone's help. When you have solutions handed to you, you forget it just as easily.

CMIIW!
I don’t think so at all we are the same people but living in different countries around the whole wide world
well maybe because Aya look shy... think I saw she follows the others when sometimes she think the other way or maybe just my imagination...

It's strange how stereotypes and racism aren't often thought of the same.
Stereotypes is intended as malice, but you might receive it passively like from media or 3rd person with any intend.

@@carilaeeduardo3055 I can’t really point to anything specific.
