So split fins are a unique design that seems to come in and out of fashion every few years. Now they seem to be very popular to new divers but once you get more dives under your belt and you change up your gear the split fin you once loved seems to disappear and either grows mould in storage or they get put on eBay.

I’ve had my Atomic Aquatics split fins for 10 years and have loved them every time I dive. While frog kicking is different than with a solid fin, I’ve developed my own style which works really really well for me.
Yes, you can frog kick with “good” split fin like theirs and our bio-fins.
Many navy diving teams can with ours. They say they chose them for the efficiency and power.
Split fins have 1 key use... getting lionfish off a spear
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Honestly thats a pretty good use lol
I'm an instructor and I have a pair of Tusa split fins and a pair of Apollo split fins and I love them both. Each has its place in my gear sets based on where we're diving. Mind you in a 4 knot current whatever kind of fins you have won't matter. The biggest advantage comes because I have a spinal surgery and I get less overall physical stress from the splits than from normal blade style fins. Less stress equals a better dive. They'll never be the go to norm for most divers but they do have a place in diving.
So totally right. So impressed with the real examination and understanding… better than me working for the manufacturer….
You can sustain longer against the current with our fins and that’s why those are chosen by the Navy Seals.
Thank you for noticing and understanding the advantages right ! We appreciate wise users like you🤝
I used to have a Scubapro split-fin, but nobody wanted to dive with me because I was too fast using them.
I've watched several of your videos and have to say I think they would be much more engaging if you use props or graphics to help illustrate your points rather than just talking with the wall of regulators in the background.
I have the atomic split fins and I love them. I will never go back to paddle fins.
I’ve got a set of splits that I love. I’ve had my ankles blown apart a few times and these don’t hurt. The only other one I’ve tried though are the super jet all rubber ones and those were terrible.
Ive used regular blades for a while and wanted to see what was up with split fins so I just got some and am excited to go use them on my next dive
I’ve got and still use Tusa Split Fins and they are amazing , I have a bad leg and they help, I would and do recommend them to all my students and fellow divers.
I have bad knees and use spit fins and they work great for me.
I want to buy a lot of gear from your website. but you guys don't ship to Kuwait
I disagree, most folk simply dont know how to use them. There for instructors don't know how to educate the proper use.
How should you use them?
They just kill divers. It's not a knowledge question, it's a safety question. Don't bring Split Fin underwater. The day you have an issue underwater, your split fin will kill you.
I like mine, i have bad knees and feet they help out greatly, but i prefer my Scubapro Nova's they are really helpful for my feet and legs and my knees hardly ache after a dive.
I have a set of mares Raptors and I love them for the slow piddling fresh water diving I do. I can see split fins falling behind in the ocean or in the currents.
Thank you for giving a realistic review of split fins. Very good review.
I use Atomics a lot of of the time, it took me around 100 dives (as an experienced diver) to really dial them in and get the most out of them. One of my co-workers has around 30,000 logged dives and has been teaching since the 80's and he has three pairs of Atomic splits and he uses them whenever he wishes to....The issue, as has been stated, is that people often don't know how to use them, they have a fundamentally different style and range of possibilities vs Blades and Jets... They can be frog kicked in all day... A note, however, I much prefer the Atomic to any other model as they are a bit stiffer and less prone to buckling.
Thank you for noticing and understanding the advantages right ! We appreciate wise users like you🤝
Yes, you can appreciate the advantages with “good” split fins like theirs and our bio-fins.
We recoginize theirs only functional split besides ours...🤫
I was an instructor on the GBR Australia for about 7 years. I wore a pair of Apollo biofins pretty much the entire time until they finally broke and I reverted to “normal” fins. I swam predominantly on my back watching intro divers and never had an issue. I found them extremely maneuverable allowing very precise adjustments to quickly alter my position if I needed to get to a diver with a problem. They are also great to touch down without disturbing the bottom and are very gentle because they flex so cause little damage. I felt like I could keep up with the crowd if needed, I do think that when people say they are not powerful its because they Dont take as much effort to do the same job and people mistake that as not moving fast. Who really needs to “chase” stuff down anyway? Diving is a tranquil sport, chasing animals only makes them flee. There have been times dragging 4 intro divers against current that have been a struggle but I think it would have been the same with standard fins. I would buy again😊
I have a set of splits that I enjoy using. I manage to frog kick in them no problems at all. Only issue is swimming backwards with them. It’s not possible at all
One of the first design Split Fin was developed by Bob Evans who created the Force Fin. He still designs and builds this design, exclusively. Depending on the design, it's can be a shorter fin (maneuvering) or a longer fin (speed and power). The frog kick with the Force Fin requires a slight modification. US Military uses it for SpecOps. I currently use the Force Fin - Original, Adjustable, and Extra Force - along with the Mares Avanti Quattro, ScubaPro Jetfins, and Hollis F2. My go-to fin is the Force Fin Adjustable. I can swim against a current and easily make headway without fatigue. I can kick near the bottom without silting out. I can wear them and walk across the sand or the deck of a boat without issue. Never giving them up.
I don't like them, but that's just me. Divers should try different styles and see what works for them and their individual kick style. If you have the wrong fin you can tire or cramp easily, a bit like riding a bike in too high or too low a gear. Find what suits you. I personally like the old solid Apeks RK3s as they're manoeuvrable and easier to work with in a confined space on a RIB for instance.
They look great. Everytime I use the split fin I feel like the fin is gonna come off. And for frog kicks it's a big no no. Not efficient at all.
I use Bio fins they are definitely my go to good power with not much effort also are pretty decent free diving fin as well!
Good information, even for advanced divers. Also, @ Alannah: no need to be so shy on camera, loved the last part of the video.
Nothing to saw about split fins, but maybe it is just me or is the lighting in this video little harsh?
For Florida drift dive, they are great. But I still prefer my scuba pro jet fins for 99% of dives though. (maybe someday I'll upgrade to the modern version though)
This old chestnut keeps coming back. Splits work, try them with a gui flutter kick. Less work equals more air.
More air equals more bottom time ! NO BRAINER
We measured with a pressure gauge and speedmeter . The result was amazing.

Apollo Split Fins are the really good. Never get a cramp and are very fast. However they are poor at slow speed maneuvering, in tight places hovering for camera work or any tech type reverse kicks and helicopters. They are nicely negative and good when you use small fast flutter kicks. For precision work, a set of Jet fins make you feel attached to the water. I prefer white as a good WB card. Good strong frog kicks and easy recovery due to the vents. They feel slower than the Apollos.
For the same results you can just take a snorkel fin like the Scubapro go. After a few test they are my favorite to demonstrate a skill circuit in a pool the size of a bathtub
I have heard that their propulsion hits a ceiling and that they don't do well in currents. Any truth in that based on experirnce?
Yea i used them in currents once, theres no propulsion compared to solid fins. Got rid and bought a pair of jet fins.
Okay, I have tried many different kinds of fins and I love my split fins. They are the only ones that don’t kill my knees. I had 3 knee surgeries in my 20’s thanks to a leg that grew crooked and a kneecap that used to dislocate easily. The first time I took a scuba class in college, I dislocated my kneecap underwater and was booted from the class. I finally got my OW cert at 43 years old. I’m usually not in a hurry to get anywhere underwater and being able to climb the boat ladder and walk at the end of a dive make them worth it to me.
I have age-related hip issues. I rely on my split fins because when I need a power kick, the splits are so much easier on my knee and hip joints.
We were diving down in the Keys. Your dive instructor’s son started chasing after a stingray. I had traditional fin an he had a split fin. I was able to chase him down. The instructor was not able to because the split fin wouldn’t let him put the power to chase. He said it would be the last time he would dive split fin with students
Had split I like. sold them after the first time trying to push twin tanks. It felt like there was no strength to my kick, maybe just me. Now I frog kick and reverse fin I think there will be no going back.
Back mount doubles do cause a lot of drag. Try sidemount less drag.
I agree I like my split fins but don't cave dive, but I do like more stability without stirring up bottom for disability. I always go back to "Scubapro Jet" fins (large). At first my legs weren't strong enough. So everyone told me to get smaller fins, but I went other route, an made my legs stronger with (Jumpo) jet fins. Then felt better back to (Large) fins.
Why PADI did not make a split fin specialty yet?
Hipsters stuff :) Looking cool - that's it. Very narrow range of proper work.
Im actually looking at getting Split Fins. I have some minor issues with my right leg, nothing major but I cant do proper „clean“ frog kicks and if you cant do the technique right there isnt really a point. So maybe Split Fins are exactly what I need. Ill try to rent a pair on my next trip and see if I prefer them over my regular Tusa Solla.
Take a look at the Tusa Hyflex switch fins. Ease of a split fin and power of the best blade fins. They work with and kick style.
man her accent is posh, i love it, which part of briton?
I use mine even while cave diving. All my tech dive buddys said hell no until they watch how I use them. Frog kicks are a little diferent but still more effective than regular fins and the turbulence doesnt disturbe the bottom. Back finning isnt easy though. Now my buddys complaine that they cant keep up.
The only situation when my atomic split fin didn´t feel very good was when I was on my back paddle back to the boat after a dive
Split fins is all I know, there all I’ve ever used
So spilt fins are like the McRib of the scuba diving world?
Never saw the plane with a splin wing 🤷♂️
They definitely are not more efficient than a standard full bladed fin. They are only easier because you aren't able to transfer the same amount of power into them as you would a pair of fins with a full blade. The propulsion comes from the water flowing over the tips of the blade rather than slipping through the middle.
So easier to use, yes. More efficient to use, no. Waste of energy and money 😊
Nah mate, I can get further and faster with less effort with my Atomic Splits than with my Dive rite XT's, for example (or other blades and jets I've used) . Less immediate thrust certainly, more efficient though, defiantly. I can easily outrun myself in my splits VS my blades in a race longer than 3 meters...
@@GastrophetDrum Alright I know nothing (:
I can guarantee that I'd get further faster over any distance with a full blade rather than a split fin. Blade density/stiffness will play a part of course in fatigue, so maybe that's where your mileage varies.
@@SJworne I am sure you know many things. The Split has a fundamentally different set of muscular actions to get the most out of them when compared to a blade, and unless one really takes the time to develop and strengthen that muscle memory then yeah, they're not going to be nearly as effective. With splits, if I am trying to go full bore, I use my entire lower body, including a wee bit of a twist from my waist. Another nice little perk, if one is getting very tired, one can use very different muscle groupings to develop thrust with splits.
Yeah Split fin kill divers. People should avoid split fins.
I love my split fins😥
I find it a bit irresponsible to not mention any of the real problems with split fins which is that most dives gone wrong were usually done with split fins, which as it is, makes it next to impossible to get out of a current for example ! I think they should be ilegal for diving and only allowed for snorkeling tbh !
I have a bad back and one badish knee so split fins work well for me also you get more distance with less effort in the kick everyone i dive with is like your so fast and im like dude im barilly even kicking yet there behind me kicking up a storm lmfao but thats just my experience lol i will say in a current and surface swimming they kinda suck at that but other then those things their grate.
Also idk why almost nobody ever talks about this but when you kick with a split fin you want it to almost be like a slap quick short kicks try and not let your feet go outside your slipstream so no more then 2 feet apart or so depending on your body but yall will notice a difference if you use split fins exparment with your kick.
why ? because people don't test them . even with frog kick they are not slow. They are actually faster in anyway than jet fin. should make a video of why Jet fin is popular instead..... why people wear jet fins ? they are slow in anyway possible even with frog kicks they are the slowest.
thats y instructors dive the top of the line gear
Split fins are more efficient so the macho divers want to use the least efficient ones bc they are harder to kick and gives you more muscles... Madness indeed... So beginners follow the instructors ways? Crazy!
I hope they never make a comeback.
The only thing you two were missing in this poorly lit video, are some black trench coats..........pssssst, wanna buy some split fins? 🤣🤣 As for my opinion on them.......I’ll pass, they just don’t seem right. 🤔
Thanks for the video. For years I have been unofficially working for a global ban against split fins. Please support me in my efforts.
Also, please support me for a global ban against people going for a run or jog with their smart phone in their hand or strapped to their arm.
Thanks
When using both hands on camera equipment, you must be able to swim backwards with just your fins. Split fins don’t work!
They might not work for You and in your particular context. That does not equal something (split fins or things of completely different nature) "don't work"... People should avoid categorical and absolute statements like that. Remember: to each his own!
@@SaludyPlata I agree with your sentiment. However, “People should avoid categorical and absolute statements like that.’ is itself a categorical and absolute statement.
Split fins. 🤮
Split fins are rubbish.
