Am I the only one who didn't think anything was wrong with Adele's speech? Saying "my black friends" wasn't a mistake at all. She meant what she said damn it. The album was to empower black women and she acknowledged it rightfully so because no one else had the guts to point it out. There was nothing wrong with what she said. And no Loni, she shouldn't have left "black" out because it was important that she acknowledged her black friends and how they felt. That's what's wrong with us. We cringe when someone brings up race, and that's exactly why progress is slow if not stagnant. Im proud and I appreciate Adele acknowledging race in her speech because I'm pretty sure the academy didn't give a damn about the political significance of Lemonade.
Loriana Hines I agree. it's not like she said " how you made my black friend" lol obviously, she has black friends who enjoyed and shared their enjoyments and thoughts with her. idk. I know race is a touchy subject so to each their own but I personally didn't think she meant any harm.

Well, I believe her album was worthy of winning along with her crazy fans. Lemonade, regardless of whether ppl like Beyoncé or think she is overrated, is an artistic and political masterpiece in my opinion. However, Adele's 25 was definitely more of a vocal masterpiece and she deserved her Grammy for sure. I just don't see anything wrong with her homage to Beyoncé.
Adele's speech saved the snub for me. She was altogether classy and she really embodied the conversation blacks are trying to have with whites about privilege. I love when she said, "The way you make my black friends feel is empowering"...she understands the need for conversation and she wasn't afraid to say that Lemonade impacted her and rightfully deserved the award. That and it was completely genuine. That speech was a VERY important moment.
I understand that too. I'm from just outside of Toronto and our communities were very multicultural. Ultimately, to get offended is petty and misses the general motive of her speech.

Not at all. It's not about "crying white privilege". It's about the willingness to have the conversation about it. Adele was willing, which was important. And I don't think you understood my point.
Adele is ENGLISH. English ppl are not as hung up abt race as us AMERICANS are. That's why she spoke the truth without fear of backlash. She was speaking from the heart. Of course Bey's album greatly impacted her black friends. Living in London really opened my eyes to the deep race issues we have in this country. It is not the same way in other white countries.

Had Adele just said, "the way it made my friends feel," it wouldnt have made the point that she was trying to express and everyone would of been confused as to what she was talking about. Lemonade WAS FOR BLACK WOMEN. Adele was saying that she recognized how it made the BLACK WOMEN in her life feel. By removing the word "Black," the statement wouldnt of had the same meaning.

Loni there's a reason why Adele specifically referred to her black friends as opposed to just saying "friends." She was referring to the cultural significance of the album and seeing how her black friends enjoyed the music in a different way than she ever could was particularly important because it was so empowering to them. It meant something more, soemthing different to her black friends than it did to her. It was a very important distinction.

It wasn't Adele's black friends collecting the Awards, it was Adele. She knew that Beyonce was deserving and she should have said so. If she really wanted to make a serious point she would have tied herself to that narrative instead of roping in her "Black" friends. It's all good for Adele to "talk" about the Black struggle, but talk is cheap, how about she show some real solidarity? It was all good standing up there trying to act all revolutionary and making some meaningless gesture of splitting the award in to two, yet, she still received all the Grammys handed to her and went home with everything.If she was looking to genuinely highlight an injustice, she should have thrown in her lot 100% and let the chips fall where they may. Marlon Brando is one artist who never played, he talked the talk and walked the walk.

I can't speak for everyone but in my opinion there's nothing wrong with saying black. It's just a way to describe someone. In fact, it actually annoys me when someone of another race says "no offense, but the BLACK guy", when they're just trying to describe who they're talking about. By them overly trying to avoid being offensive it becomes offensive because it makes it seem like there's something wrong with being black.
I prefer to hear black over african american because it's just easier. I don't say "caucasian" so I don't expect everyone to say "african american". To me at the end of the day saying black is no different from saying tall/short/skinny/fat/brown/pale etc. People are so hypersensitive and politically correct these days it's ridiculous.
Another example, mainstream media will say "hearing impaired" instead of "deaf" to avoid being insensitive. Ironically, the deaf community actually PREFERS the terms deaf or hard of hearing and find "hearing impaired" offensive. Because from their view, being deaf is not an impairment and is actually a badge of honor. Deaf pride. Anyway...this message is long and I'm getting off topic. lol sorry about that.
gigglyfitzgirl true. I think for society to progress we shouldn't be ignorant and say things like "i don't see color" we obviously do see color because we are visual beings. What needs to happen is accept & embrace the fact that we are different & thats ok. Not ignore it.

Adele's speech was poignant and heartfelt - it made me cry. There wasn't a single moment when I felt offended or hurt. It was moving.
As a black woman I liked her comment because before she said black friends she said herself, friends and then black friends,That was actually at the end. I liked her comment but I honestly thought she gave Beyonce to much credit because she herself was very deserving.
This is the perfect comment that also sums up my own feelings. Lemonade is Beyoncé’s greatest work, and even still I think Adele deserved that Grammy. I was sad that Adele felt undeserving and dedicated her award to Beyoncé because Adele created a masterpiece, and I’m so glad she got that recognition. I hope she beats out Beyoncé again this year at the Grammys and that she doesn’t even mention Beyoncé’s album in her speech.

I am GLAD Adele specified her BLACK friends because when the album came out, it was clear that it was to show representation for Black women and girls. so many white writers tried to co-opt the album in their thinkpieces trying to make it seem like the INTENTIONAL elements of Blackness Incorporated into the album were not there and that it was JUST an album for everyone when in fact it was not simply that. What kills me is that we raised Cain when white writers tried to erase the Blackness of both Beyonce and Solange's albums but then we get mad when Adele rightfully acknowledges how empowering on a whole other level Lemonade was for Black people specifically??? she did nothing but tell the truth. Lemonade both sonically and visually is a representation of Black and African culture, history, and spirituality. it was a statement of fact and I am glad Adele acknowledged it.
My opinion: When Adele said '...the way you make my friends feel..' and even the way she said "Black" came from a sincere place. ( She at first said "..the way you make my friends feel..'" before adding detail...I think she was referring to the same 'friends' and wanted Beyonce to know that she'd seen the impact of the album. Adele seems to have been moved personally while still realizing that a Black woman's experience is deeper. She also seems to have even been moved by the fact that her friends were moved.)
It was a cringe moment cause we all know we're walking on eggshells because of overly sensitive ppl smh 🙄 ...when she said 'black friends' I already knew the poor girl was gonna be chewed up and that's not right but that's the world we live in 🤷🏻♀️
Nothing offensive about what Adele said. If anything, I'm thankful that she is able to realize what Lemonade meant for so many black women and even some men. People are so dense sometimes. They hear "black friends" and want to find a way to get offended. Adele is so genuine and so kind. That speech was moving and the moment her and Beyonce shared was beautiful.
And no Loni and Adrienne, she didn't miss any verbs or wording. She said it just fine.

Adele didn't miss any adjectives or verbs.. she just told everyone that her black friends found it empowering. Beyonce's Black, she sings about being black and the impacts & all that. Seeing someone from your own minority doing bits is always going to empower you. She didn't say anything wrong.
I so agree with Adrienne on this... I could feel Adele's heart in her speech. It was beautiful! However, even as a black woman myself, I didn't flinch when Adele mentioned her "black friends". Like I knew people would talk about it and her but I didn't find an issue with it. It told me that Adele understands the Lemonade album/visual and what it was actually about.
Also, I feel like Tamera was left out of this conversation which is why she said that little part towards the end... but why was she getting emotional?

Im from the UK and I think its purely been lost in translation somewhere. We don't use African English so black was the most appropriate term and I'm sure she had no idea it would be heard as anything other than heartfelt and empathetic. Growing up in Tottenham, Adele was probably surrounded by an enormous mix of people so for her what sounds a bit blunt and insensitive is just completely normal and everyday. Peace

Yeah I was so in love with Lemonade but that thought always came up because she has a history of jumping on trends or issues that were popular at the time even though it contradicts her previous music or ideas.

i dont understand why saying my "black" friends is wrong. Black isnt a derrogatory term. Beyonce is black, and she herself has said the album is about empowring black women and black people over all. Or at least it has those undertones. I see nothing wrong in Adele pointing out that her black friends felt that empowerment thanks to Beyonces album. its just praise.

To be completely honey I'm black and, I have no problem with someone say "oh that's my black friend over there". I don't see what's wrong with it. Its what I am its the color of my skin. Its the way one identity me being called black to me is an honor. Because I know what my black incest went throw to get the people of my skin color in this country to where we are today. The way Adele spoke made me think she has some really lovely friends that she is on a level with. That by mentioning her black friends it was already a massive emphasis of love, respect, and admiration for Beyoncé's record. For those of us who were born and raised in London we have a multitude of cultures and ethnicities we're comfortable with being surrounded by and loads of friends from those cultures. So when I heard Adele's speech all I heard was a Londoner who has an awesome set of friends and she had her chance to recognise someone else's greatness and share that moment. Loved that.

I don't get the confusion of what Adele said. I think she worded it perfectly. Her mentioning how it made her black friends feel was imo the most important part of her speech. She knew that Lemonade was an album for the black women out there to love and embrace their black girl magic and she appreciates the positive effect it had on them. Adele's album moved a lot of people but not as much as Lemonade moved the hearts of all the black women/men out there and that's what she was saying. I love Adele

What Adele said was perfectly fine. I heard her very loud and clear and I'm glad at a time like this that she chose to stick to together instead of dividing like the rest of the world.

Beyonce can sind and dance, all round entertainer. Granted Adele can sing, however there are dime a dozen black girls out there who can match her or surpass (if given the opportunity and the right song). Right now the music industry is structured to pander to "Blue Eyed Soul"...Adele, Sam Smith etc. With the exception of Beyonce and Rhianna, black female singers barely get a chance to sing ballards. Beyonce aside, Adele has nothing on vocalists like LaLa Harthaway;Jasmine Sullivan. And what is this thing of Adele fluffing up performances and asking for a do-over in the middle of a live performance, it ain't cute. Beyonce would never do that! Neva! Beyonce comes in and executes the job beautifully, sings, dances and don't be messing up on Yonce's time cause she doesn't like sloppy vocals and weak dancing...Adele? She just stands there. Beyonce deserved the Grammys.

No one should have been upset about Adeles speech. It was so obvious she was being genuine and she was truly showing her love and support of Bey's work! She is a diehard Beyoncé fan and even understood WHY Lemonade was important to Bey and even her black friends. She was basically saying she GETS it and she APPRECIATES it! How was that missed? People can be so dumb. I teared up with Adele and Bey hearing that speech. I'm sure the whole room did.

I wanted Beyonce to win Album of the Year but I am okay with Adele winning. Beyonce's Lemonade album was about empowering black women and she also talked about police brutality. I thought Lemonade had the most impact in the year of 2016.
I salute Adele. The people who are knit picky about her speech can go on somewhere else. Everyone knew exactly what she meant and it was a positive thing she said. As a Black woman, I was thankful that she recognized the significance and impact that Beyonce has had on the young and the old Black women around the world. It's Black history month, let those who recognize it do so without the backlash.

Its so refreshing to see that I was not the only person who tilted my head and raised my brow listening to Adele's speech. Had she included just one word - "especially" - that would have made all the difference. Just my opinion.
I'm so tired of people getting butt hurt about someone bringing up race. People are so confused, you want us to bring up race one minute, but then when people do you want to say something. There was no other way to say it. Adele said it the way she needed to. She understood who the album was made for, and for that I respect her. Being black myself, I congratulate her for standing up and saying what she said. For being the person to say what need to be said when probably no one else would have had a set to say it.

There was nothing wrong with Adele saying "black friends" - that is who the Lemonade album catered to. If she had said "my friends", it's likely that most people would've assumed the friends in question were white and said " what do her friends know about the black struggle?!?" A white woman spoke out and spoke about the impact that the album had on her and her BLACK friends - letting Beyoncé know on a public platform that her album did exactly what she intended for it to do - empower black people.

I think Americans misconstrue anything related to race. Adele is British where black and white people aren’t segregated like they are in the US. She wouldn’t have thought twice about saying what she said because she has a different sensibility to Americans. Adele is from a highly populated black part of London and she’s down with the culture, always has been. That’s it.
I didn't take offence to what Adele said. If her friends are black then they're just black, there's no need for her to put it in any other words (It wasn't offensive at all). It's just like if a black says my asian friends or my white friends (nobody gets defensive when blacks or any other race use those terms/words). Also what Gary tweeted was kind of funny. People get too too sensitive when it comes to race. That's his style of comedy and I don't think he meant anything by it. One person on the panel was going overboard and being too defensive.
