My great great grandfather, Charles served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment in many of the major battles from the First World War. He was gassed, hit by shrapnel and shot in three separate incidents but survived every one of them. This tune makes me think of him.
A blackened death metal band took these lyrics, altered them slightly, and added some extras to make a really sombre, melancholic take on this, for anyone who happens across this comment (and is interested). 1914 - The Hundred Days Offensive All their songs are about WWI, and they also use a lot of old movie samples on their albums as well to fit the theme.
@Bramble Hutterman Yep. Growing up, the WW1 books written for young readers emphasized the trenches on the Western front. As you said, there were many other fronts.

My late grandad used to hum this tune. He was a veteran of the Somme, Royal Engineers.
Grandad gassed twice, sick for the rest of his life with only one lung anything like normal. Passed away in 1964.
My great-grandad was also gassed twice, and as such sadly passed in 1960. My dad was born in '57 and has no memory of him sadly
My Scottish coworker from 40 years ago told of his uncle getting gassed and said he was never the same again.

Precisely. Many just went mad. NOBODY CAN EVEN IMAGINE THE HORROR . THE MAJORITY OF SURVIVORS NEVER MENTIONED THE WAR, FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.

and Belgium and Turkey and likely a few others.
