It's at the end that the over overwhelming sadness takes over me as the soldiers disappear on the train. Which is representative of the MILLIONS of waisted lives of young men. Its hard not to cry, but i guess there is a silver lining in the sky.... somehow I hope....

    • @professorteamkill1336
      @professorteamkill1336 3 года назад +16

Do you feel it? The expressed pain of cloaked men in secret. Lived as fluid as the representative waters of blood of a nation. The "Silver lining" of men. Painted with the essence of golden men and women along the way. Generations of whom are now nothing but wisdom and inspiration gone like the time in the wind. Sadness prevailing in the ignorance of what is now considered bliss. But that which is in reality nothing more then privileged arrogance with a hint of irony. As historical arrogance like life itself is cyclical. Which becomes folk lore or genocide depending on the time and date of a generation. The life of brilliant men and women in the early 19th century still make me terribly worried for the modern day. What initiations could we have possibly gained from the young minds lost war? We will never know sadly.

Yes, quite right, I thought you were going to remark on the disappointing ending. In the film, the mother is seen ,with ( clever editing) turning and walking back along a REAL, and empty railway Platform.

    Lyrics:
    Brother Bertie went away
To do his bit the other day
With a smile on his lips
    and his Lieutenant's pips
upon his shoulder bright and gay
As the train moved out he said,
'Remember me to all the birds.'
    And he wagg'd his paw
    and went away to war
    Shouting out these pathetic words:
    Goodbye-ee, goodbye-ee,
Wipe the tear, baby dear, from your eye-ee,
Tho' it's hard to part I know,
I'll be tickled to death to go.
    Don't cry-ee, dont sigh-ee,
    there's a silver lining in the sky-ee,
Bonsoir, old thing, cheer-i-o, chin, chin,
    Nap-poo, toodle-oo, Goodbye-ee.

My parents took me to see this when I was far to young and I hated it because none of it made sense.
I watched it again, on video, many years later and thought it one of best criticisms of war ever made. The humour fades into ridiculous naivety and the horror is highlighted by the lunacy of the kings and generals.
I watch it once a year and it never fails make me smile and cry. A masterpiece.

one of my favourite scenes from a fantastic film. In 2014 ,and several times till 2018, I wrote and asked the BBC to televise this Gem, ( how suitable could a film be? for this centenary) They didn't reply, OR show the film WHY ? too sensitive for the children who run that fantasy haven? Outlook on the wars was different back then too, especially during first runs of that musical on stage. Casualty statistics in background, average life expectancy of soldier in combat, other realities of war - horrors contrasting with comedy on the front stage. By the way, the war in Ukraine have been going for roughly 148 days, 19 hours and 31 minute so far.
Charming and wholesome - in contrast with horrors. Writing that from Russia too, albeit a little different one to what it was year ago.

'Goodbye-ee' replaced the popular British Army song 'Tipperary' by the end of WW1.
The victorious British Army entered Cologne singing this song.
