The running gag here is that Elaine May wears the same dress every time she speaks at one of these things. She even jokes about it in her Mike Nichols AFI speech. What a treasure she is.
My mother, who passed away 10 years ago, would always tell me how great Elaine May was, and would imitate how May said "heavens" in "A New Leaf". Since she was my mother, I just nodded politely. Now I just finished watching the movie, her comedy work with Mike Nichols, and her unique presentations like this one. Mom was right; what an epic genius!
"Heaven Can Wait" was a remake OF "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941) starring Robert Montgomery (Elizabeth's Dad) as well as James Gleason, Claude Raines. Edward Everett Horton and Evelyn Keyes (who would remind anyone who cared to hold still that she had played Suellen in GONE WITH THE WIND),
I would have loved to have seen Elaine May's own 180 minute cut of "Mikey & Nicky" before the studio's knee-jerk re-editing of her film. She's just a treasure, and one of the funniest and most clever women of the 20th century.
Elaine May's writing in "Heaven Can Wait" is fantastic. I also adore her directing of "The Heartbreak Kid" (the original one, not the horrible Ben Stiller one.)
Son of a bitch -- my wife and I just saw May's Mikey and Nicky. It's on Criterion: go see it. I knew she was a brilliant comedian and comic writer. I did not know she was such a fine filmmaker.
She's so brilliantly funny. She didn't act in very many good movies -- in fact, I can't think of a single one -- but she was always good even when the movies were total crap. In the Spirit, anyone? Elaine May's isolated scenes with Walter Matthau are the only reasons to endure the racist cesspool known as California Suite.

I love Elaine May!
I love the movie Heaven can wait. So did my 96 year old mom. Warren as Leo Farmsworth is great
It was actually Farnsworth
Heaven can wait is actually a very touching movie.. and Charles Grodin is a crack up in it..
Yes and Dyan Cannon is great, too.

That was really sweet and wonderful.
She was responsible For the movie Ishtar. One of the most under appreciated movies.
One of my favorites.

Fun and touching at the same time
She directed Mikey and Nicky and the Heartbreak Kid. I bow accordingly.
Elaine May directed a great film called Mikey and Nicky. I recommend this film to serious film buffs.
Beatty looks really emotional at the end there...
that really made me laugh out loud !

a bit of genius...funny every time.
She is the original Eternal....Jack Kirby must have come up with the comic book after he first saw her on TV.
Interesting tribute.
Both were very good, but I liked Al Pacino's though.

Whatever. I think she looks great.
Really? One of the funniest people on Earth and that's your insight..
I like what she says looks are not to be judged by me anyway. Her comedic timing is perfect.
