As a senior gay married(8 yrs) man (my husband Ron & I have been a couple for 34 yrs), I love this episode about a middle-aged to senior gay couple surviving for as long as they could for each other. Beautiful, poignant but not a tragedy in a tragic world. Thank you for your insightful reactions & comments. I'm bisexual and this whole episode made me feel so emotional because I can identify with the beautiful and healthy love that they share and the fact that it's such a great representation of a healthy gay relationship just made it better. It's needed.
This episode of The Last of Us hit very differently for me. As an older gay man, I lived through the worst of the early AIDS crisis and knew many men who chose suicide or assisted suicide when the disease became unbearable. All apocolypse stories that are diseased based are always AIDS allegories for me, and this episode made that even more true for this one. The reality is queer love can be found in seemingly hopeless places, we know because a generation of gay men did just that, but it was quite wonderful to see this representation of that reality in a mainstream series without a gay target audience.
Exactly! We survived an apocalypse of our own. Watching the episode totally wrecked me -- and I continue to weep watching all the reaction videos. After all the loss many of us survived in the 80s - I couldn't stand to lose another two Gay Bears i'd come to love in less than an hour.
It was indeed beautiful, but to be fair, there is definitely a gay target audience. Anyone who loved and played the games knows full well Ellie is a lesbian, and she is, indeed, the main character.
Yes, nearly every vampire movie or zombie movie or “there’s a fungus amongst us” flick has a connection with HIV/AIDS. The bad thing is 1) they actually made it, and 2) they think no one will get the connection. Well, those of us who lived through it and lost loved ones get it. We’re still on the lookout, even though its ALMOST irradicated. Right now, we have just had the fifth person to be completely cured of AIDS, but we will always feel that nervousness and dread. Our dead are still in our hearts and minds.
You guys skipped over the scene where they meet Joel and Tess but I thought it was interesting that Frank, an openly gay older man, decided on the codes for the radio and right away said of course the 80s means trouble. We know from his age he would’ve lived through the aids pandemic in the 80s and likely lost friends, and maybe even lovers. Just a nice detail from the show runners, if it was on purpose.
The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living. Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live. That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all. In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life. In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up. Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch. Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending. Was rewatching the episode through reactions, in an endless sadistic ritual of breaking my heart yet again with the amazing episode, and there was one part that I always wondered a bit but was crying too hard to think it through. Bills suicide. If Bill had told Frank what he planned on doing, Frank might've changed his mind only to keep Bill alive. He might've gone on with the pain and hopelessness because he wouldn't want Bill to kill himself too while he was healthy. Bill went the whole day knowing what he was going to do. And his final gift to Frank was knowing he could probably stop the whole thing by even saying he wouldn't stay either. But he didn't want Frank to live when he didn't want to. Bill was so selfless that he let Frank take that final drink with no concern. And even after Bill didn't say anything. He probably would've gone to bed and Frank would never know. But when he saw the concern in Frank's eyes even then he tried letting him know he was satisfied. The survivalist gave him his life. But I guess, in the end, his life _was_ Frank. And either way that night his life was ending. ---------- Bill, in his paranoid ways, would never sleep with a window open before. That moment he left the window open would've been his final acceptance. For the first time in a long time all his fears, worries. All lifted off. He no longer had anything to be afraid of anymore. Those final steps, from the window, to the bed where Frank was waiting for him, must've been the lightest steps Bill ever took his whole life. And that moment his eyes closed for the last time, knowing his love was in his arms, and that nothing could ever hurt either of them again. It must've been the most peaceful rest he ever fell into.
One thing that isn’t mentioned very often-and why I think this story resonates so powerfully-is its subtext. Throughout history, queer people have had to make lives, find love, create joy, etc in the face of an extremely hostile world. It’s normal, especially for us gay men of a certain age. Which means, of course, that’s it’s possible for everyone. So Frank and Bill’s story isn’t really a standalone; it’s what the thesis of the whole series.

This episode made me cry so hard that I was worried my neighbors would come check on me. I'm not exaggerating. As a queer person with a degenerative neuromuscular disease, this episode hit me HARD!!!!!! People don't talk enough about how significant it is that Bill not only turns his back on Frank to play piano, but he immediately admits, "There's no girl," to a stranger. Frank could've been a raging homophobe who would've wanted to harm him for being gay. There were several real-world examples of that happening to people at that time. Bush was trying to ban gay marriage then, too, so this had to be intentional timing on the show's part. The fact that Frank cries when they first kiss, and Bill is so hesitant at first but reciprocates the kiss quickly despite how paranoid he is, shows just how lonely and starved for love both men have been. After that moment, my fear that Frank would attack Bill vanished. Frank may have gotten some gaydar vibes from Bill (the plate chargers, food plating, and the way he poured the wine all read very queer to me, on top of all the body language and acting choices by Nick Offerman). Bill likely would've ignored any intuition like that he had, being as paranoid as he is. The show runners said Frank already knew about his MS/ALS, so he always knew he was going to deteriorate physically and need a lot of help. He definitely would've told Bill, and Bill was prepared to not only continue to protect them but to take care of Frank's physical needs. The man who doesn't care about appearances takes care of the flowers because he knows they're important to his partner, and he cares about Frank's emotional health as much as his physical one. Bill doing that is unfathomable on day 1. Bill and Frank getting married set at current day (as gay marriage staying legal in the US is on unsure footing) is so poignant. I definitely would've done the same as Bill and Frank at the end. If Nick Offerman doesn't win an Emmy for his performance, I'm going to be so upset. Thank you, Megan Mullally, for telling your husband to take this role. The world is better for it. I've seen plenty of straight people fully weep over this episode- including cishet men who were fans of the game. I think that says a lot about the storytelling in the episode. I haven't played the games, but I've heard from many gamers that LGBTQ hate is rampant in them. They've said that TLOU games show that often, evil people dominate a society in a fragile situation. So, yeah... not going to be good for us queers, trans people, disabled, and BIPOCs.
As a straight guy, my comment will be short. I saw myself in both characters. Tears came to my eyes. I am hopeful for this kind of relationship(just not an apocalyptic one).

Straight lady here and thus episode BROKE me. A universal story of pure love. Bill knew how to survive, but Frank knew how to live. I ugly snot cried. It's heartbreakingly beautiful. The writing, cinematography, music, ACTING. *chef's kiss "Frank was the flowers and Bill was the soil". In the end, Bill loved Frank like he wanted to be loved. ❤️
As an older gay male who was partnered for 10 years and married for over 5 years, this story hit me hard. However, this story shows that love is love; I have watched lots of reaction videos to this show, and almost everyone ugly cried.
I absolutely loved this episode as a straight woman, it's my favourite episode of the season! I think love is so universal which is why it impacted so many different people but I can imagine it's even more powerful/impactful to watch as a queer person
As a straight guy, I've perceived three major gay tropes: the weak feminine who gets axed quickly, the strong masculine who makes to/near the end, and the group of mostly LGBTQ where one of'em will ultimately have a happy sort of ending. But I've never ever seen a story like this one, where they're built up as normal and capable people first and then gay later, not to mention limiting the outright homosexuality stuff and to just show a couple trying to get on through the world. This doesn't feel like Media gay, this feels like real people. (I don't intend to offend, this is only the extent in my abilities and terminology to communicate what I'm thinking.) EDIT, an edit perhaps which is unneeded, I think this episode is one of the greatest pieces of work put to screen. To watch Nick Offerman go from Ron Swanson to his end story here, and to not mess it up the way I keep seeing it messed, with the story of the two and the realities of this world, it's my belief that if the team doesn't get awards for mainly this then there's gonna be a riot. And also please give feedback to me on the whole comment, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot that I don't yet fully understand.
I’m really not qualified to comment on this, but I just just want to say that I **think** I understand what you are getting at, and I can tell that you are trying to be respectful. I agree that these types of gay characters are not often represented in media, not to mention a healthy relationship between characters like this. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the gay tropes you mentioned exist because those types of gay people exist as well. You said the tropey stories feel like Media, whereas this feels real. I think that’s down to the writing, directing, and oh my god the acting (Nick Offerman’s eyes should win their own Emmy for this). And also I think it’s very important that many of the people working behind the scenes on this particular episode were queer, which of course helps with authenticity. I’m just pointing out that the stories you mention that feel “media” don’t feel less authentic because the characters weren’t as masculine or were more flamboyant. Those people also exist, and their stories can also feel very authentic, and I think it’s important to understand that. You could try watching the HBO series Looking if you want to see a well told story with a variety of authentic queer characters

I obviously have a lot to learn about a significant community "who isn't like me", excepting knowing that they're a whole lot more like me than I know. Regarding the tropes, and after further thought, you definitely must be right. With so many personalities out here, there will be real people who fit into them. It's not that I can't believe that, it's just that it feels like they crank up the tropes to 11, and even still there are folks who fit that. I'm seeking to better understand "others" without disrespect, because I'm an "other" to a whole lot of people and I'd hope they'd try to do the same for me. If the world would put even a fraction of effort into this sort of discussion, we'd all be in a way better place I think!

Pirates. *Middle-aged gay pirates.* Seriously, cannot recommend the show highly enough - and it has a non-binary character played by a non-binary actor with non-binary people in the writers' room too!
I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with the game but *SPOILER ALERT* in the game, Bill and Frank did not have a loving relationship. In fact, Frank got fed up and left Bill. He eventually got infected and hung himself before turning. In his s*d note, he said getting infected and dying was "still better than spending another day with (Bill)". 😥 Also, their relationship was heavily implied in the game but it wasn't as out in the open as in the show. Bill always referred to Frank as his "partner" but the only confirmation that they were gay was when Ellie finds the gay magazine in the car, a scene they kept in episode 4. Idk if that says something about progress for gays in the mainstream media between when the game came out in 2013 and now 2023.
It is almost impossible to infer their relationship in the game in any manner. When you are angry at someone or figuring Ruth then, saying "better than another day" is absolutely something you could say and mean. But they were partners and it seemed a lot more to me like Bill was still upset at Frank and was lashing out...

It's one interpretation, almost everything can be interpreted in many ways, so it's more about artists intent, which obviously confirmed this "impossible" interpretation
@@beardlessdragon to be clear, the nature of their actual relationship was obvious. It's just hard to in for what the original poster said which is that they did not have a loving relationship. The only part of their relationship we saw was one side from Bill after he had already felt betrayed and jilted by Frank deciding to leave. That's why when you see Frank's body and he calls him a coward, it's not necessarily because they hated each other. It's because they were fighting and you say things you don't necessarily mean when you're hurt.
I’m straight cis female and I cried my eyes out with this episode. I think that what I love about it in terms of representation is that they didn’t have to be gay for the story to work. They were gay simply because gay people exist. At first I felt that the marriage scene was political too, and it may still is, but I feel now, after watching the whole show that it was more. Bill and Frank are basically Joel and Ellie. Frank even had to cure Bill from an abdomen wound just like Ellie did for Joel. At the end of their relationship, they chose to formalize it, which Joel has been struggling all series to care for Ellie as a daughter. He “formalized” it by the end when he actually sees and treats her as a daughter.

My husband and I have been together for 26 years (six married). I've had some health struggles, from being in a coma, to prostate cancer, and I count myself lucky, because I have a man who stood by me through it all. Without him, I really don't think I'd be here today. So this episode really hit home for us. And we don't compare it to BROKEBACK, because Bill and Frank managed to carve out a healthy long-term relationship in a world where all the odds were against it ever happening.

As an Elder Gay, this episode broke me. I'm old enough to remember the last episode of M*A*S*H that was considered the best TV episode of all time. This episode replaced it hands down. Story, writing, acting, and production. All columns, 10 stars.
I've been really heartened to see the overall response to this episode and think it has the potential to make a lasting cultural impact. Just do a search on YT of "Last of Us episode 3 reaction", if you haven't already, and you'll see what I mean. Sure, there are plenty of traditionally LGBTQIA+ channels embracing it, as you would expect. But it's literally everyone else too, even traditionally heteronormative straight gamer dude-bro channels. Reactors who start off the Bill and Frank storyline in obvious discomfort, literally squirming in their seats, seem to almost universally come around by the end. They go from "I don't know about this, man, I don't remember this from the video game" to being openly moved by the story. For a lot of these viewers, I think it's the first time they've ever spent time absorbing a well-told gay love story. It's like having it come to them within the framework of their gaming comfort zone is making them feel like they have permission to experience the story in a way that they might not otherwise, if that makes sense, and it seems to be making a real impact. In any event, my husband, teenagers and I watched this together and are still talking about it weeks later. We all agree that it's one of the best hours of television we've ever seen, with beautiful storytelling, even if 2 out of 4 of us were flat-out weeping by the end.
I am straight but I love love. I loved this love story so mutch and I cried my eyes out. Also I think it’s so needed to show a love story like this. With older men and a long lasting love. Love love loved it.
this episode is absolutely beautiful it's a simple story of two older guys making it together in an impossible world, and it made me cry so much definitely a change from the game but one of the best changes in the whole show I think
This was such a lovely episode. I don’t actually watch the show, but my parents do and my mom specifically told me I should watch this episode because it was so well done, so I did and I am so glad. Also, if you’re wondering about a horror project with queer characters, watch Chucky, the TV show. The main character is a gay teen who has a boyfriend who is one of the other main characters.
You asked if it was just you or if others (non-gay men?) were reacting similarly, so I'll answer as a pretty basic straight cis dude: Once they ate the strawberries my wife and I didn't - couldn't - stop crying until Joel opened the truck hood. And then we started again when Ellie put the tape in. I hope everyone, even if you hate the series, can appreciate this episode. It was unbelievable. Thank you for your review.

Bi woman bawling her eyes out again. I’ve watched this episode over 5 times outside of the whole Last Of Us series because it’s just so beautiful as its own story.
PS. The entire show is queer. I won't spoil anything but much to the chagrin of many "fans", the game's sequel felt some backlash as it became very lgbt for reasons : ) So you should probably react to the entire thing! Episode 7 will show what I'm talking about.
I think absolutely anyone can connect to their story because while it’s a story about a gay relationship, them being gay isn’t really the main point or integral to the story. It’s a great gay love story but it’s also just a wonderful love story at its core. Like, you could replace Frank with a woman or Bill with a butch lady (or both) and use the exact same script and it would be just as powerful.

There is the TV show Hannibal. It's not a queer story but there are queer elements and by the end, the love between the two leads are undeniable. The show runner is Bryan Fuller, the man loves horror and is gay.

It would be interesting to get your take on what's going on with Armand in season one as well. the White Lotus characters are so fascinating.
I think that there are definite political undertones because Bill was seemingly meant to be a right-winger and Frank a left-winger. Frank's political ideology isn't stated out right, but Bill's arguably is: the "Don't thread on me" flag is exclusively used by white right-wingers as a statement of loyalty for "the good old days". Therefore, I think the message of love here is underscored by the pair's contrasting ideologies/political beliefs.

Good Morning/Afternoon Everyone (it’s 10AM here in NY). I haven’t seen any of this series yet so I’m happy to watch along with y’all especially since I don’t usually do scary. Here we go. Ooh, I didn’t realize that Murray Bartlett is in this series.
For what it's worth, it's light on the horror. Not that there's none, but the human relationships are much more the focus of the show than the horror is.
A younger always handsome Murray Bartlett is in it too. He is actually a great actor; hope he gets the attention he deserves. Another Emmy besides the one for White Lotus.
I'd argue that this isn't political btw. Certain subjects are just politically weaponized, but I think at its core, equality is a civil rights matter, and not a political matter as it pertains to policies and laws to maintain order. The persecution of gays and minorities doesn't have anything to do with maintaining safe public order, it's purely a vendetta. I do get you because it IS heavily weaponized at a political level, but I think it's important to maintain that no, you cannot "disagree" with gay rights, you do not have the permission or rights to do so. Disagreement, opinions, are about things like does pineapple go on pizza. If you think that someone doesn't need equal and total rights then that's not an opinion, that's prejudice, and inhuman. Period. So anyone that "respects" gay people, or "tolerates" them. We don't need your respect. To give your respect already implies hierarchy as if they were in a higher position to choose what's allowed. What we need is total and out loud support, anything less than that is harmful and an attack towards humanity. And no, you're not allowed to sleep at night thinking you're a good person. We don't need the permission to gain our rights, we will have it, whether you want us to or not. It's mostly semantics, but I think we need to phrase it differently because those type of people want us to think of it as something "political", so that they can say, "Hey let's keep politics out of this", like with topics such as religion or politics that you don't discuss in public or openly share. Because that's how they got their way for over a century. With the mentality of, "Let's not discuss this in public, but you're free to speak about it in some corner where no one can see or hear you". And for a long while people accepted that as it was better than being harmed, but on the long run what did that do for women's rights? Racial equality? Nothing. It wasn't until we started being loud, vocal, rioted, and doing very public that things started actually changed. I mean, at one point "don't ask dont tell" was heralded as a win. Can you imagine? "Hey you can exist and be here, you just can't tell anyone what you are, but don't worry, they can't ask you either" lol. That was the final bastion they had to try to officially make us quiet, until the dam burst.

This episode reminds me of an amazing episode of The Magicians called “A Life in a Day.” If you have seen it, I highly recommend it. Of course it’s better to watch in context of the show but I think you can watch the episode as a one off because the story is told so well. Also great queer representation on that show during it’s run.
Yes, I'm rewatching/Finishing The Walking Dead and I love when Aaron and Eric embrace before Rick he just looks so non effected. Rick Grimes is definitely an ally.🏳🌈 But yeah there also was Tara who was a lesbian, Jesus was either Bisexual or Gay as he mentions to Maggie that he had "Boyfriends". And in a later season you have Magna and Yumiko who were another lesbian couple who are welcomed into the group. Now I do think killing Denise was kinda burying your gays but tbh I definitely will argue Eric dying during the Savior war was not as it completed his character arc as Eric was honestly always giving Aaron shit about going out on runs for supplies, so it was honestly so great to see him be brave right before his demise. Aaron didn't even put him down as a walker either. They just had him walk off screen.

Everyone that has played the game ,knows that Bill was gay and Frank was his partner. I love the way they portrayed Bill and Frank in the HBO series, this was much better than the way it was brought across in the game.
I'm a 40 straight woman, I watched it with my man. And we both got emotionnal. I'm the only one that cried ;) but my man thought of it as a "regular" couple and said that he would've done the same as Bill. I don't know if there is a difference between gays and strait. But, I don't see anything different, besides 2 penises. ;) After all, love is love.
Knock At The Cabin is a rather good horror(?)/thriller movie with a married gay couple as the central characters and it’s one of M Night Shaylaman’s better movies to date.

They have definitely been making a lot of political statements in the show, I'm 99.9% sure that including the marriage in there was one too. (I can't remember if they mentioned that on the podcast or not.) The political statements do, in general, seem to be making The Conservatives suuuuuuuuper mad, but I can't quite understand why they're so invested in the show when the game had queer representation and all that ~evil~ stuff to start. Who knows. They're also all up in arms at just how pro-LGBTQIA+ rights Pedro Pascal is, and I love how much he doesn't care that it upsets them.
U all should really watch the whole show. Not saying more cause that would spoil something. If u ever do gaming reactions I would recomend Ranboo. They are non-binary and use He/Them. They are a twitch streamer and do multiple games including the game that inspired the show Since Bella who plays Ellie is gender flued and okey with all pronouns.

As a senior gay married(8 yrs) man (my husband Ron & I have been a couple for 34 yrs), I love this episode about a middle-aged to senior gay couple surviving for as long as they could for each other. Beautiful, poignant but not a tragedy in a tragic world. Thank you for your insightful reactions & comments. as a gay guy it was fucking stupid, terrible acting, clearly just a grab for attention.
I'm bisexual and this whole episode made me feel so emotional because I can identify with the beautiful and healthy love that they share and the fact that it's such a great representation of a healthy gay relationship just made it better. It's needed.
This episode of The Last of Us hit very differently for me. As an older gay man, I lived through the worst of the early AIDS crisis and knew many men who chose suicide or assisted suicide when the disease became unbearable. All apocolypse stories that are diseased based are always AIDS allegories for me, and this episode made that even more true for this one. The reality is queer love can be found in seemingly hopeless places, we know because a generation of gay men did just that, but it was quite wonderful to see this representation of that reality in a mainstream series without a gay target audience.
Exactly! We survived an apocalypse of our own. Watching the episode totally wrecked me -- and I continue to weep watching all the reaction videos. After all the loss many of us survived in the 80s - I couldn't stand to lose another two Gay Bears i'd come to love in less than an hour.
It was indeed beautiful, but to be fair, there is definitely a gay target audience. Anyone who loved and played the games knows full well Ellie is a lesbian, and she is, indeed, the main character.
Yes, nearly every vampire movie or zombie movie or “there’s a fungus amongst us” flick has a connection with HIV/AIDS. The bad thing is 1) they actually made it, and 2) they think no one will get the connection. Well, those of us who lived through it and lost loved ones get it. We’re still on the lookout, even though its ALMOST irradicated. Right now, we have just had the fifth person to be completely cured of AIDS, but we will always feel that nervousness and dread. Our dead are still in our hearts and minds.

You guys skipped over the scene where they meet Joel and Tess but I thought it was interesting that Frank, an openly gay older man, decided on the codes for the radio and right away said of course the 80s means trouble. We know from his age he would’ve lived through the aids pandemic in the 80s and likely lost friends, and maybe even lovers. Just a nice detail from the show runners, if it was on purpose.

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.
That argument in the street is where the game Bill and the show Bill's timeline diverge. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all.
In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
Bill lets the "danger" song play so that Joel and Tess would come, and get all the weapons and things they needed to have a happy ending like he did. If you read the rest of the letter Bill tells Joel which wine to use in order for Joel to woo Tess and start doing more than just surviving. But it's too late for Tess. Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. He looks at the key in his hand, and he could part ways with Ellie, but now Tess told him to save who he could save. Bill told him to protect others are what they're for. And he decides to open up a bit, the first time since the time stuck on his broken watch.
Both Bill and Franks from the game and show are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.
Was rewatching the episode through reactions, in an endless sadistic ritual of breaking my heart yet again with the amazing episode, and there was one part that I always wondered a bit but was crying too hard to think it through.
Bills suicide.
If Bill had told Frank what he planned on doing, Frank might've changed his mind only to keep Bill alive. He might've gone on with the pain and hopelessness because he wouldn't want Bill to kill himself too while he was healthy.
Bill went the whole day knowing what he was going to do. And his final gift to Frank was knowing he could probably stop the whole thing by even saying he wouldn't stay either. But he didn't want Frank to live when he didn't want to. Bill was so selfless that he let Frank take that final drink with no concern. And even after Bill didn't say anything. He probably would've gone to bed and Frank would never know. But when he saw the concern in Frank's eyes even then he tried letting him know he was satisfied.
The survivalist gave him his life. But I guess, in the end, his life _was_ Frank. And either way that night his life was ending.

Bill, in his paranoid ways, would never sleep with a window open before.
That moment he left the window open would've been his final acceptance. For the first time in a long time all his fears, worries. All lifted off. He no longer had anything to be afraid of anymore.
Those final steps, from the window, to the bed where Frank was waiting for him, must've been the lightest steps Bill ever took his whole life.
And that moment his eyes closed for the last time, knowing his love was in his arms, and that nothing could ever hurt either of them again. It must've been the most peaceful rest he ever fell into.
One thing that isn’t mentioned very often-and why I think this story resonates so powerfully-is its subtext. Throughout history, queer people have had to make lives, find love, create joy, etc in the face of an extremely hostile world. It’s normal, especially for us gay men of a certain age. Which means, of course, that’s it’s possible for everyone. So Frank and Bill’s story isn’t really a standalone; it’s what the thesis of the whole series.

This episode made me cry so hard that I was worried my neighbors would come check on me. I'm not exaggerating. As a queer person with a degenerative neuromuscular disease, this episode hit me HARD!!!!!! People don't talk enough about how significant it is that Bill not only turns his back on Frank to play piano, but he immediately admits, "There's no girl," to a stranger. Frank could've been a raging homophobe who would've wanted to harm him for being gay. There were several real-world examples of that happening to people at that time. Bush was trying to ban gay marriage then, too, so this had to be intentional timing on the show's part. The fact that Frank cries when they first kiss, and Bill is so hesitant at first but reciprocates the kiss quickly despite how paranoid he is, shows just how lonely and starved for love both men have been. After that moment, my fear that Frank would attack Bill vanished. Frank may have gotten some gaydar vibes from Bill (the plate chargers, food plating, and the way he poured the wine all read very queer to me, on top of all the body language and acting choices by Nick Offerman). Bill likely would've ignored any intuition like that he had, being as paranoid as he is. The show runners said Frank already knew about his MS/ALS, so he always knew he was going to deteriorate physically and need a lot of help. He definitely would've told Bill, and Bill was prepared to not only continue to protect them but to take care of Frank's physical needs. The man who doesn't care about appearances takes care of the flowers because he knows they're important to his partner, and he cares about Frank's emotional health as much as his physical one. Bill doing that is unfathomable on day 1. Bill and Frank getting married set at current day (as gay marriage staying legal in the US is on unsure footing) is so poignant. I definitely would've done the same as Bill and Frank at the end. If Nick Offerman doesn't win an Emmy for his performance, I'm going to be so upset. Thank you, Megan Mullally, for telling your husband to take this role. The world is better for it. I've seen plenty of straight people fully weep over this episode- including cishet men who were fans of the game. I think that says a lot about the storytelling in the episode. I haven't played the games, but I've heard from many gamers that LGBTQ hate is rampant in them. They've said that TLOU games show that often, evil people dominate a society in a fragile situation. So, yeah... not going to be good for us queers, trans people, disabled, and BIPOCs.
As a straight guy, my comment will be short. I saw myself in both characters. Tears came to my eyes. I am hopeful for this kind of relationship(just not an apocalyptic one).

As an older gay male who was partnered for 10 years and married for over 5 years, this story hit me hard. However, this story shows that love is love; I have watched lots of reaction videos to this show, and almost everyone ugly cried.
I absolutely loved this episode as a straight woman, it's my favourite episode of the season! I think love is so universal which is why it impacted so many different people but I can imagine it's even more powerful/impactful to watch as a queer person
The gay survivor cosplay killed me 😆
As a straight guy, I've perceived three major gay tropes: the weak feminine who gets axed quickly, the strong masculine who makes to/near the end, and the group of mostly LGBTQ where one of'em will ultimately have a happy sort of ending. But I've never ever seen a story like this one, where they're built up as normal and capable people first and then gay later, not to mention limiting the outright homosexuality stuff and to just show a couple trying to get on through the world.
This doesn't feel like Media gay, this feels like real people.
(I don't intend to offend, this is only the extent in my abilities and terminology to communicate what I'm thinking.)
EDIT, an edit perhaps which is unneeded, I think this episode is one of the greatest pieces of work put to screen. To watch Nick Offerman go from Ron Swanson to his end story here, and to not mess it up the way I keep seeing it messed, with the story of the two and the realities of this world, it's my belief that if the team doesn't get awards for mainly this then there's gonna be a riot. And also please give feedback to me on the whole comment, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot that I don't yet fully understand.
I’m really not qualified to comment on this, but I just just want to say that I **think** I understand what you are getting at, and I can tell that you are trying to be respectful. I agree that these types of gay characters are not often represented in media, not to mention a healthy relationship between characters like this.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that the gay tropes you mentioned exist because those types of gay people exist as well. You said the tropey stories feel like Media, whereas this feels real. I think that’s down to the writing, directing, and oh my god the acting (Nick Offerman’s eyes should win their own Emmy for this). And also I think it’s very important that many of the people working behind the scenes on this particular episode were queer, which of course helps with authenticity.
I’m just pointing out that the stories you mention that feel “media” don’t feel less authentic because the characters weren’t as masculine or were more flamboyant. Those people also exist, and their stories can also feel very authentic, and I think it’s important to understand that.
You could try watching the HBO series Looking if you want to see a well told story with a variety of authentic queer characters

Regarding the tropes, and after further thought, you definitely must be right. With so many personalities out here, there will be real people who fit into them. It's not that I can't believe that, it's just that it feels like they crank up the tropes to 11, and even still there are folks who fit that.
I'm seeking to better understand "others" without disrespect, because I'm an "other" to a whole lot of people and I'd hope they'd try to do the same for me. If the world would put even a fraction of effort into this sort of discussion, we'd all be in a way better place I think!

I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with the game but *SPOILER ALERT* in the game, Bill and Frank did not have a loving relationship. In fact, Frank got fed up and left Bill. He eventually got infected and hung himself before turning. In his s*d note, he said getting infected and dying was "still better than spending another day with (Bill)". 😥
Also, their relationship was heavily implied in the game but it wasn't as out in the open as in the show. Bill always referred to Frank as his "partner" but the only confirmation that they were gay was when Ellie finds the gay magazine in the car, a scene they kept in episode 4. Idk if that says something about progress for gays in the mainstream media between when the game came out in 2013 and now 2023.
It is almost impossible to infer their relationship in the game in any manner. When you are angry at someone or figuring Ruth then, saying "better than another day" is absolutely something you could say and mean. But they were partners and it seemed a lot more to me like Bill was still upset at Frank and was lashing out...

It's one interpretation, almost everything can be interpreted in many ways, so it's more about artists intent, which obviously confirmed this "impossible" interpretation

@@beardlessdragon to be clear, the nature of their actual relationship was obvious. It's just hard to in for what the original poster said which is that they did not have a loving relationship. The only part of their relationship we saw was one side from Bill after he had already felt betrayed and jilted by Frank deciding to leave. That's why when you see Frank's body and he calls him a coward, it's not necessarily because they hated each other. It's because they were fighting and you say things you don't necessarily mean when you're hurt.

I’m straight cis female and I cried my eyes out with this episode.
I think that what I love about it in terms of representation is that they didn’t have to be gay for the story to work. They were gay simply because gay people exist.
At first I felt that the marriage scene was political too, and it may still is, but I feel now, after watching the whole show that it was more. Bill and Frank are basically Joel and Ellie. Frank even had to cure Bill from an abdomen wound just like Ellie did for Joel. At the end of their relationship, they chose to formalize it, which Joel has been struggling all series to care for Ellie as a daughter. He “formalized” it by the end when he actually sees and treats her as a daughter.
14:35 also it wasn't until 2004 that Massachusetts became the first U.S. state legalize same-sex marriage and the series the pandemic broke out in 2003.

My husband and I have been together for 26 years (six married). I've had some health struggles, from being in a coma, to prostate cancer, and I count myself lucky, because I have a man who stood by me through it all. Without him, I really don't think I'd be here today. So this episode really hit home for us. And we don't compare it to BROKEBACK, because Bill and Frank managed to carve out a healthy long-term relationship in a world where all the odds were against it ever happening.

As an Elder Gay, this episode broke me. I'm old enough to remember the last episode of M*A*S*H that was considered the best TV episode of all time. This episode replaced it hands down. Story, writing, acting, and production. All columns, 10 stars.
I've been really heartened to see the overall response to this episode and think it has the potential to make a lasting cultural impact. Just do a search on YT of "Last of Us episode 3 reaction", if you haven't already, and you'll see what I mean. Sure, there are plenty of traditionally LGBTQIA+ channels embracing it, as you would expect. But it's literally everyone else too, even traditionally heteronormative straight gamer dude-bro channels. Reactors who start off the Bill and Frank storyline in obvious discomfort, literally squirming in their seats, seem to almost universally come around by the end. They go from "I don't know about this, man, I don't remember this from the video game" to being openly moved by the story. For a lot of these viewers, I think it's the first time they've ever spent time absorbing a well-told gay love story. It's like having it come to them within the framework of their gaming comfort zone is making them feel like they have permission to experience the story in a way that they might not otherwise, if that makes sense, and it seems to be making a real impact.
In any event, my husband, teenagers and I watched this together and are still talking about it weeks later. We all agree that it's one of the best hours of television we've ever seen, with beautiful storytelling, even if 2 out of 4 of us were flat-out weeping by the end.
I am straight but I love love. I loved this love story so mutch and I cried my eyes out. Also I think it’s so needed to show a love story like this. With older men and a long lasting love. Love love loved it.

This was such a lovely episode. I don’t actually watch the show, but my parents do and my mom specifically told me I should watch this episode because it was so well done, so I did and I am so glad. Also, if you’re wondering about a horror project with queer characters, watch Chucky, the TV show. The main character is a gay teen who has a boyfriend who is one of the other main characters.
You asked if it was just you or if others (non-gay men?) were reacting similarly, so I'll answer as a pretty basic straight cis dude: Once they ate the strawberries my wife and I didn't - couldn't - stop crying until Joel opened the truck hood. And then we started again when Ellie put the tape in.

I think absolutely anyone can connect to their story because while it’s a story about a gay relationship, them being gay isn’t really the main point or integral to the story. It’s a great gay love story but it’s also just a wonderful love story at its core. Like, you could replace Frank with a woman or Bill with a butch lady (or both) and use the exact same script and it would be just as powerful.

I think that there are definite political undertones because Bill was seemingly meant to be a right-winger and Frank a left-winger. Frank's political ideology isn't stated out right, but Bill's arguably is: the "Don't thread on me" flag is exclusively used by white right-wingers as a statement of loyalty for "the good old days". Therefore, I think the message of love here is underscored by the pair's contrasting ideologies/political beliefs.

I'd argue that this isn't political btw. Certain subjects are just politically weaponized, but I think at its core, equality is a civil rights matter, and not a political matter as it pertains to policies and laws to maintain order. The persecution of gays and minorities doesn't have anything to do with maintaining safe public order, it's purely a vendetta.
I do get you because it IS heavily weaponized at a political level, but I think it's important to maintain that no, you cannot "disagree" with gay rights, you do not have the permission or rights to do so. Disagreement, opinions, are about things like does pineapple go on pizza. If you think that someone doesn't need equal and total rights then that's not an opinion, that's prejudice, and inhuman. Period.
So anyone that "respects" gay people, or "tolerates" them. We don't need your respect. To give your respect already implies hierarchy as if they were in a higher position to choose what's allowed. What we need is total and out loud support, anything less than that is harmful and an attack towards humanity. And no, you're not allowed to sleep at night thinking you're a good person.
We don't need the permission to gain our rights, we will have it, whether you want us to or not.
It's mostly semantics, but I think we need to phrase it differently because those type of people want us to think of it as something "political", so that they can say, "Hey let's keep politics out of this", like with topics such as religion or politics that you don't discuss in public or openly share. Because that's how they got their way for over a century. With the mentality of, "Let's not discuss this in public, but you're free to speak about it in some corner where no one can see or hear you". And for a long while people accepted that as it was better than being harmed, but on the long run what did that do for women's rights? Racial equality? Nothing. It wasn't until we started being loud, vocal, rioted, and doing very public that things started actually changed.
I mean, at one point "don't ask dont tell" was heralded as a win. Can you imagine? "Hey you can exist and be here, you just can't tell anyone what you are, but don't worry, they can't ask you either" lol. That was the final bastion they had to try to officially make us quiet, until the dam burst.

This episode reminds me of an amazing episode of The Magicians called “A Life in a Day.” If you have seen it, I highly recommend it. Of course it’s better to watch in context of the show but I think you can watch the episode as a one off because the story is told so well. Also great queer representation on that show during it’s run.
Yes, I'm rewatching/Finishing The Walking Dead and I love when Aaron and Eric embrace before Rick he just looks so non effected. Rick Grimes is definitely an ally.🏳🌈 But yeah there also was Tara who was a lesbian, Jesus was either Bisexual or Gay as he mentions to Maggie that he had "Boyfriends". And in a later season you have Magna and Yumiko who were another lesbian couple who are welcomed into the group. Now I do think killing Denise was kinda burying your gays but tbh I definitely will argue Eric dying during the Savior war was not as it completed his character arc as Eric was honestly always giving Aaron shit about going out on runs for supplies, so it was honestly so great to see him be brave right before his demise. Aaron didn't even put him down as a walker either. They just had him walk off screen.

Everyone that has played the game ,knows that Bill was gay and Frank was his partner. I love the way they portrayed Bill and Frank in the HBO series, this was much better than the way it was brought across in the game.

I'm a 40 straight woman, I watched it with my man. And we both got emotionnal. I'm the only one that cried ;) but my man thought of it as a "regular" couple and said that he would've done the same as Bill. I don't know if there is a difference between gays and strait. But, I don't see anything different, besides 2 penises. ;) After all, love is love.
Knock At The Cabin is a rather good horror(?)/thriller movie with a married gay couple as the central characters and it’s one of M Night Shaylaman’s better movies to date.

They have definitely been making a lot of political statements in the show, I'm 99.9% sure that including the marriage in there was one too. (I can't remember if they mentioned that on the podcast or not.) The political statements do, in general, seem to be making The Conservatives suuuuuuuuper mad, but I can't quite understand why they're so invested in the show when the game had queer representation and all that ~evil~ stuff to start. Who knows. They're also all up in arms at just how pro-LGBTQIA+ rights Pedro Pascal is, and I love how much he doesn't care that it upsets them.
