Donna Summer was Pop Music first female mega star (before Madonna and MJ for that matter), she was the first female artist and the first black artist to bring 3 albums to the top of the charts back to back. They just happened to be 3 multi-platinum selling double albums, for some reason it's the double album(s) part that gets highlighted. The first solo artist to have 3 #1 singles, and 5 top 10 and/or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year (79). She was the most commercially successful female artist of the 70s worldwide, the only American artist in mid to late 70s that sold records in all countries worldwide. She pushed the boundaries by crossing into multi genres selling millions worldwide. She re-wrote the Billboard chart records at the end of the 70s, with many accomplishments on the charts, one being 9 consecutive top 5 singles; all selling over a million copies or better a physical sales record. There are many songs to choose from, but since you started with Hot Stuff, my suggestion would be Bad Girls which was the next released single, and the song that was starting as you stop the music in this video. Summer had one the of the most versatile voices and is one of pop music premier vocalist. Being the only artist nominated for a Grammy in 5 different genres (at least 3 times each) R&B, Rock, Gospel, Pop & Dance, and the only artist to win a Grammy in 4 different genres.
This song won a grammy for best female rock vocal performance in 1980. The first year the Grammy's had added that category. A few years earlier she had the first all electronic hit with her song I Feel Love, which is considered one of the most influential songs in pop music history. It paved the way for New Wave, Trance, and House genres of the 80s and beyond. Although everyone calls Donna Summer the Queen of Disco, that title doesn't come close to describing her overall impact in pop music industry. And one can arguably say without Donna Summer there probably would not have been a Madonna.
Donna was AMAZING. Saw her in concert back in 1980- she was tremendous. This song always reminds me of The Full Monty...if you really want to hear a dynamite duet listen to No More Tears (Enough is Enough) with Donna and Barbra Streisand!
Donna Summer was an incredible artist. I saw her perform, and she was pitch perfect. I was also lucky enough to meet her after the show. She was gracious and friendly. I'm grateful for both experiences. She left us way too soon. 💔
I was very lucky to see Donna Summer twice in concert, and she was just awesome with her powerful vocals…also, a very gorgeous looking woman ! Her best vocal performance in my opinion was the legendary “McArthur Park”.
"I Was Made for Lovin' You" by KISS is definitely "rock disco", and Heart's Straight On (which you've heard) is described like that on wikipedia but is more rock than disco
She was always top of her game and innovative and was the real icon for the those that followed such as Madonna and Lady Gaga - and of course she could sing!
She was the "Queen of Disco", but she was AN INCREDIBLE SINGER!!! She deserves much more recognition than she got, she could sing any style, with perfect intonation, and without any effort, and of course she didn't need any kind of trick... Unforgettable
Queen of Disco? Sure, but so, so much more. You want electronic? “I Feel Love”. New wave? “The Wanderer”. Rock? “Cold Love”. Funk? “”Love Is in Control”. Reggae? “Unconditional Love”. She was incredibly versatile and talented. Hope you do a lot more reactions to her music.
On 2 June 1979 HOT STUFF by Donna reached N. 1 on Billboard's HOT 100. It became one of Donna's biggest hits, then one month later on July 14 1979 BAD GIRLS reached N. 1 on Billboard's HOT 100. While HOT STUFF was still at N. 3, Donna became the first woman in history to have two singles in the top 3 at the same time. Donna's talent was incredible! She could sing everything from Disco to Rock. She won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal. She was also nominated for other Rock songs throughout her career. Donna is the only artist to have Grammy's in 4 different categories.
Yass!! I remember both of those songs from the summer of 1979 because Hot stuff lead right into bad girls it was amazing!! I was fifteen that summer and they played these two songs religiously on the radio constantly that summer starting off with Hot stuff and going right into Bad girls!! It was an amazing and awesome era to experience this in real time!! Treasured memories!!😊❤
As Matt Damon described it in the movie "The Martian", the least disco song in what he found in the things the others had in the belongings after they left him.
…..Shout out to my girl Donna ❤️ she was born right here in Boston, (Mission Hill) she was born on New Years Eve (1948) not only was she the “Queen Of Disco” she was more notably the “Queen Of Boston” Donna left us May 17th 2012 (63) back in the 70’s Aerosmith, Boston, The Cars and Donna Summers ❤️ were in and around the Boston Club scene, small music halls . Great memories 🙏🏻
This whole album is FIRE....all of the songs are mixed into each other except the ballad section. She did that on a number of her albums. The album before this, "Once Upon A Time" is a another double vinyl album masterpiece!
From the Bee Gees and Saturday Night Fever in 1977 to Donna and this record, disco dominated the charts at the end of the 70's. This is primarily why you had such a disco backlash at the beginning of the 80's. Still an incredibly fun time in music history; you couldn't help but want to find the nearest dance club thanks to these artists.
… Donna is definitely one of the 5 best singers in the world! ... The voice 🔥 is phänomenal and unique!! … I'm always very sad that she's no longer there!! 🕯 ✨💎✨ … next song maybe “Bad Girls“? Thank you
Another One Bites the Dust by Queen is Rock/Disco. Do Ya Think I'm Sexy by Rod Stewart is Rock/Disco. Every One's a Winner by Hot Chocolate is Rock/Disco. Don't Bring Me Down by ELO is Rock/Disco. I think there are many examples if you look/listen.
The whole album (Bad Girls) is 🔥!! I hope you react to my fave track from the album “Our Love”. Other standouts are “Sunset People” and of course the title track “Bad Girls”. Not only a beautiful lady, but, she also had such an amazing vocal range and command of the stage when she performed. Gone too soon. RIP Donna❤
I’m 61 and have been seeing concerts since 1976. I had the chance a few times to see her, and always said I’d have time to see her in the future. She was on a great disco tour with a few other disco performers in the late 2000s. I had access to tickets and didn’t go. Again, I thought I’d have time to see her. Then she died in 2012. There aren’t too many artists I haven’t seen. It was a real kick in the ass for me to always see a performer when I get a chance. No more waiting around for a second chance.
I LOVE Donna!!!! She was actually in a rock band called The Crow before she got her stardom. She wanted to be a Rock singer. It just so happened Disco found her first.
You have to do Last Dance and MacArthur Park. Last Dance was played at every disco all over the world as the final song of the night. MacArthur Park is a testament to how good her voice was. It is incredibly difficult to sing. Donna had amazing pipes.
Lotofgreat songs by this artist , the wanderer is a great album , two Great songs from another album is idont wanna get hurt and sentimental seriously underrated from another place and time album
@@trevorteeters2383But it is true. Maybe you should watch it again. 🙄 Did you not understand what he wrote? Hot Stuff isn’t actually in the movie, genius.
Dude, there was a line around the corner and down the block at the Exclusive Company (regional record chain) here in Green Bay, waiting for the store to open the day this was released! Anticipation was off the charts after the huge succes of her #1 double album "Live And More", which produced 2 big hits from the "More" side, including her first #1, a remake of "MacArthur Park". I believe she's the first and only artist (group or solo) to have 3 double albums go to #1. Let alone a black woman singing disco! Is this your first reaction to her?!? She has a goldmine of hits.
Wow! Haven't heard this in so long (mom had the album), it's the first time I really get to hear the production. As for a rock + disco blend, a few tracks with varying amounts of rock and disco mixed together: Kiss "i was made for loving you", Rod Stewart "do ya think i'm sexy", Rolling Stones "miss you".
Rock Disco : KISS "I was made for lovin you". Queen's Another one bites the dust. Pink Floyd's "another brick in the wall"? Blondie has some. 1978 to 1981 the "Golden Age" of Rock Disco. I am sure there are more.
Rock Disco is the embarrassing Rock. "Start me up" by the Rolling Stones, "I was made for loving you" by KISS are examples. Basically, it is any Rock and Roll band that got caught up in the disco craze and incorporated it into their music. You can tell because the drummer put Four on the Floor most of the song.
When you listen to Hot Stuff, you also need to listen to Bad Girls after. The way they tied the two songs together, is like a cool down off of the high when listening to Hot Stuff. What is even better is listening to both extended versions of the songs.
She was the QUEEN of Disco. I just loved all her music.
RIP DONNA

Yes more from the Queen of Disco. On the Radio is another gem.

Yes!!

Donna did an amazing duet w/Barbra Streisand - “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH (No More Tears)”. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
An epic voice, RIP Donna Summer
Donna Summer was always about two minutes ahead of everyone and everything else.
And Giorgio Moroder. He definitely was a "G" when it came to disco music :P
This song was =THE hot disco song back in the day. It was everywhere.
It was such a great time for radio, those days. There was so much diversity in the playlists and so many quality songs. I miss those days.
