when karlovic hit that passing shot in the first servicing from nadal during the second set, that was the first time i have ever seen him hit a topsin backhand and not just another slice unbelievable.
+Dougie D Maybe he could. If he were a bit faster ;) Being as tall as he is enables him to hit monster serves but it also makes him slow and clumsy. As for the backhand: it looks to me like he only hits his powerful one-hander when he has the time. If his backhand's under pressure he doesn't have the technique to perform the shot quickly and consistently enough. I think that's why he slices a lot.
+Dougie D Yep, you are correct. A slice backhand is a great compliment for a big calm power server because mentally it helps with keeping focus. I naturally play like that, but I'm only 6 foot 1. For some reason I think I'm 6 foot 4, when playing both tennis and basketball. Hitting a lot of topspin backhands requires a certain kind of attacking aggression that will eventually cause mental lapses on the serve. Slicing the backhand keeps everything calm, and helps conserve energy, most of all. That's especially important for a guy in his mid-30s who knows he's going to play baseliners of the caliber of Nadal and Nishikori and Djokovic in the late rounds when he's having a good tournament. Karlovic knows his best chance to win any match is to get to a tiebreak, and use his stored energy for attacking on the service return and going for his backhand, and using a little bit of extra movement. When playing that style, its crucial to win the first set, which is why Karlovic often has slight mental lapses in the first set against players like Nadal. It's easy to say that he's mentally weak, but its just a consequence of that style of play. A simpler way of putting it is this: The best way to break down an opponent's serve is to start hitting your shots and beat him from the baseline, which puts the server under pressure for every subsequent service game. If you are the big server, and you know you're outgunned from the baseline, the best antidote is to serve the opponent off the court and cruise your way into the tiebreak, and make them beat you in the tiebreak. This is especially true against a player like Nadal, who has a very hard serve to break and is one of the best at breaking serve. The thin margin of error gets thinner the closer you get to the tiebreak.
Karlovic has the best Service of all active Players. It is nice to See how Rafael Nadal overcomes his Service Stability By staying Patient and Waiting for the opportunity to Break.Unreal how many Returns Rafa made back in Play.Huge Respekt for Rafael Nadal to overcome this challenge.🇪🇸#Vamos
Man I love watching Karlovic which might seem an odd thing to say. I’m a diehard Nadal fan - started watching him during 2004 Wimbledon and haven’t stopped. But Karlovic is NOT a one trick pony. His slice backhand actually cuts through the court quite well and he can hit it anywhere. His forehand is actually reliable and he can hit both power & spin. And his serve doesn’t need explaining. I respect that he’s like 40 years old and still out there winning tough matches. He also always had a stutter which made him nervous during interviews but he even overcame that and is now considered one of the funniest nicest players on tour
I always thought ivo potentially could be a monster tennis player but he agonizingly seems to lack good shot selection. Constantly slicing on the backhand, weird approach shots etc. his forehand is huge when he catches it right and there’s no need to mention that serve.. An interesting player indeed.
HE held serve 17 out of 20 times (85%) against the best returner in the game. I would call that pretty effective.....Nadal's holding serve percentage for the whole year against everybody is only about 87%. Two of the breaks of serve in this match were very close. Ivo's problem was that he only got one break himself. But that's his game. He and John Isner are the least effective breakers of serve in the game...usually less than 10% a year. Here he broke once out of 20 times (5%).
First time I ever seen that karolvic didn't learn backhand strong hit. He always hit slices.. Absolutely pathetic to can't play strong hit on this level.

I've seen him hit a winning groundstroke from that side only once when it wasn't a passing shot....he will pass with it now and then....
Lovely contrast of styles.
I love Ivo, but you can't slice to Nadal's forehand over and over like that.
Ivo's backhand is only slice!!
raul_mark I wonder what would happen if Karlovic had a big backhand to suprise the opponent at time to time :D
raul_mark Well, watch the shot at 4:14. He can actually hit a powerful one handed backhand, no idea why he doesn't use it more often.

Wow i didnt notice
If Karlovic had a backand he could be an elite top ten player.
If i had a 190mph serve, a great attacking game and federers forehand with djokovic's backhand i could actually be unbeatable
His movement is poor.. So he'd need to improve that too
***** 21 ISNT top twenty. Lmao

@ 5:20 Unbelievable defense from RAFA!!

Rafa defends the seemingly impossible ones.
Rafa in his flash mode!
This young Rafa was a beast. He absolutely ripped his forehand, probably the best single shot in tennis history

The mythical Karlovic with a double handed backhand would have been a nightmare for every Wimbledon player.

I normally don't like highlights full of aces, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching Karlovic ace Nadal over and over
Pity you never got to see Karlovic actually beat him though. lol
ambdance00 weird how you included the Nadal part for reason of your enjoyment.
I thoroughly enjoyed the video of Nadal hitting 3 return winners against karlovic in 2015
Ivo was once 2 points from the match against Rafa, and Rafa came up with a great shot....
Rafa competitive tenacity and movement to run down every ball and never give up to win the point is phenomenal..
15:00 that’s the best volley I’ve ever seen.
Nadal can defend the seemingly impossible ones.
No backhand but two powerfull tools : serve and voley. But Nadal is the King. Vamos!
It's not just the height, but Karlovic has technically the best (or one of the best) service motions out there.
why he's always doing a backhand slice I only saw one backhand with out slice
Commentator: He's not just a one shot wonder
Me: *watches 3 aces fly by*

That was brutal Rafa against a big server
Rafa got injured in this AO and missed the calendar slam that year.🥴

If Nadal wasn't injured and forced to forfeit during the match with murray he would have probably won 4/4 in 2010

Karlovic's serve and volley isn't effective enough for this slow court.
