Hi this is Hope Freleng. My father Friz Freleng was the creator of the wonderful Pink Panther. How wonderful this tribute to this genies Henry Mancini. Love to be a part of this wonderful time that this tribute means to the Freleng family.❤
Your dad was a genious....millions and millions of kids grew up watching Pink Panther....and I"m positive I'm not the only adult that will still sit and watch it when I come across it.Pink Panther is The Andy Griffith Show of cartoons. Timeless...classic....amazing!
A week ago my 11 year old granddaughter interviewed me for a class assignment on the 60’s. I had to confess that the music I listened to the most were movie soundtracks. I then told her about Henry Mancini. She looked quizzical, then I started the Pink Panther theme and she joined in. Generations united. Two For The Road is my favorite and the Sweetheart Tree is my ear worm.
Played for him in Sedona, the wind whipped his big old Hollywood score right off the piano and across the heads of our audience; he didn't miss a note!
Great story. There is nothing better than Moon River! It takes me back to childhood and dad's stereo and record collection. As a classical flutist myself, seeing James Galway and LIzzo together is fabulous!!!!
He was amazing. Amazing scores for films. And as a bonus, I'd say he composed 3 standards: Moon River, Peter Gunn Theme, and the Pink Panther Theme. Along with many other great instrumental tunes.
Mancini performed at my mom's high school graduation (Pink Panther and Moon River such classics). Glad Buble and others keeping his work alive (anything beats Taylor!).
My parents took me to a live concert in the 60’s Akron Ohio. The most memorable experience of my life! I am still a huge fan.❤Thank you for showcasing this tremendous body of work. ❤️
I love Henry Mancini, he composed so many beautiful pieces, why you spent the whole video on Moon River is beyond me. He had so many other compositions like Baby Elephant Walk, Peter Gunn and all the movie themes from Blake Edwards movies that are worth celebrating
How can one composer be SO gifted?? First 3 notes of Moon River are quite possibly the most emotionally nostalgic, longing and sad in music history, and send me immediately to tears.. It was my mother’s favorite song 🌹
Mancini's legacy goes beyond Moon River and Pink Panther: Baby Elephant Walk, Peter Gunn, Days of Wine and Roses, Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet, a gem of a song called Whistling Away the Dark and the soundtrack of Victor Victoria is a gem! Crazy World is always such a poignant and beautiful song!
What a huge memorial to composer Henry Mancini. Just to hear takes me back to a place when all of my sibling and parents were here on this earth. Brings Longing and happy tears!❤
My personal favorite of his is "Days of Wine and Roses." It's one of the songs that makes me visibly angry when I hear a rearrangement that completely misunderstands the wistful melancholy of the original and speeds up the tempo; Henry Mancini knew exactly what the soul of the movie was, and I hope future interpretations continue to honor his genius (the Andy Williams and Julie London versions are two of my favorites).
"I don't think anyone under 50 knows who Henry Mancini is." *Me, a 32 year old who considers Victor/Victoria to be one of his favorite movie scores* : "Excuse you!"
I'm 42 years old. Oh, and by the way, my 2 favorite Mancini compositions are 2 great pieces that hardly ever get mentioned.... 1) The opening theme to EXPERIMENT IN TERROR 2) His opening theme to the 70's edition of the NBC NIGHTLY NEWS. Both great, Jazz influenced pieces!❤
My 34 year old knows exactly who he is was. Musicians know! In fact a few years ago she had the first bar of Moon River tattooed around her writs… because it’s one of my favourite pieces of music. He won’t be forgotten.
I guess I'm so LUCKY to have seen him in person at the Greek Theatre way back in the late 60's-70's ?..... LIVE .... and Plaz played the Pink Panther theme,... SO COOL.
Mancini was a great composer but, as this segment pointed out, Moon River was written as a wistful little song, to be sung by an actress with very limited vocal range. It’s a gem, especially Audrey Hepburn’s rendition. Andy Williams’s version was way over the top, although he sounded great. But the orchestrated versions here are like trying to turn a commercial jingle into a symphony.
The new version with Michael Bublé was actually the only arrangement Henry personally wrote in addition to Audrey's version and it is being heard here for the first time. The instrumental section in the middle is taken directly from the scene when Holly Golightly finds "Cat" at the end of the film. There is also a 2nd version of "Moon River" on the new Mancini 100 album called "Moon River/Audrey's Letter". I think you're gonna love it...
Sweet sweet memories of beautiful music by Henry Mancini. One of my first albums. Thankful that a tribute is being created with phenomenal artists. Bring it on.
Growing up, my father would play Mancini and others. That was my musical education. As an adult I can't hold a tune with a pair of vice grips but I do know good music when I hear it. Thanks Dad.
I am over 50 and I know who Hank was. Thanks Mancini family for lining this up. Thanks producer for locking up Michael Buble in the control room. Thanks CBS news for finding a corner of 2032 that is uplifting.
I love these retrospective exposés. And there are few better programs than CBS Sunday Morning for this one. Love that all the greats came together for some of the songs. I guess for Maestro Williams, who was in Mancini's band (probably played Peter Gunn when it first came out), it was very nostalgic.
While I love “Moon River” and “The Pink Panther” theme, the song that made me fall in love with Henry Mancini was the theme song from “Days of Wine and Roses”! When I first heard it, I ended balling my eyes out because it was so beautiful yet had some sad undertones to it. Then I saw the movie and understood why. Mancini was a genius and he’s up there with the greats!
Anyone know when this recording will be available? I get shivers just listening to Henry Mancini. My mom loved him and his music was played in our house.
In 1986, i first heard the music of Henry Manccini when i heard English electrionic band art of noise and the amazing guitarist Duane Eddy play a version of the peter gunn theme Love that song . I also love the pink panther theme
Well I learn something today,I thought Peter Gunn was Quincy Jones creation, love Henry Mancini’s music ,especially moon river ,I was very little when I hear Mancini for the first time on tv ,but his music is unforgettable !
@horseygurl143 I am sorry for your loss. 🙏💔 Look at it as your father is playing with Mr. Mancini himself. He's in no pain & he's in EXCELLENT hands. ✝️🌈 God bless you & your family. Again, my condolences. 🙏🕊 🎶🎤🎹🎵🎶

I can understand Lizzo's inclusion in this segment as the Galway/Pink Panther recordings were done around April/May, months before the lawsuit came to light. However, I do agree with other commentors' confusion as to why she is the thumbnail image vs. the other amazing talent involved in this project (Quincy Jones, John Williams, Michael Bublé, etc).
Not too late to edit her out. She doesn't belong on this project, or any project, frankly. Lots of talented people out there who'd love to participate.

Love this. Buble is the perfect choice. Galway cannot be beaten. I once thought, Jean Pierre Rampal was the master, but I now see the error of my ways. Magnificent piece.
For my money, Henry Mancini’s greatest song is the theme from the movie “Two For The Road”. I’m shocked it wasn’t mentioned in this report - especially since I read once that it was Mr. Mancini’s favorite song of his own that he wrote, too.
Henry Mancini deserved a much better segment than this. You only discussed two of his songs and neglected to mention all that he accomplished during his amazing career, including dozens of awards, 30+ studio albums, movie, theater and TV musical scores, acting roles, etc. Mancini was more than just the Pink Panther. Shame on you CBS.
Wait! CBS is doing an unprecedented 3 segments on Henry with the 3rd airing this weekend and are producing a full-length feature on Henry to air in early 2025. That's a lot of love from our friends at CBS... :)
Henry arranged and recorded "A Time for Us" and had a hit record of Nino Rota's song. Actually knocked the Beatles out of #1 with an instrumental track...

I know who Henry Mancini is; always have, and I’m 41. I absolutely thank my father for this.
Mancini’s theme for the 1958 TV series “Peter Gunn”. A taste of jazz with a rockin bass line.
Also, his Mr. Lucky is awesome!
On the Original Peter Gunn Soundtrack….The Man on the Piano was…Johnny Towner Williams!!!
It was just fantastic! I always recommend listening to the 'Art Of Noise' featuring Duane Eddy version. It is a fitting tribute to Mancini.
