Learning a language IS difficult but I can't believe someone would just throw it in your face and say "it's nonsense". How arrogant. This video was wonderful. I am in complete awe of people like you who speak 2 languages fluently. Your videos are amazing. Thank you so much.
I remember a student I had who was studying the topic of education in a group and we had "a steep learning curve" as a lexical unit. She (a middle-aged lady) pretty much threw a tantrum saying "there's no way anyone but a 12-year-old would say that, you're lying" when I said I had heard an example of that from an adult person just the day before. So yeah, while it is rare, it does happen. There was also a time when I had a male student double my age saying how women are always less competent. I really wanted to send him to a male teacher and also tell him that I reached his level of English (which isn't my first language) by a quarter of his age, and that already disproves his point. But raising a conflict in a group isn't a wise choice, so we had to go on studying. So yeah, there are a lot of ignorant students, but luckily there are a lot of sweet and great students
Unfortunately some people are arrogant and will stay that way, no matter what you say or do. But some other can actually reflect on other people's point of view and change for the better!
i am native chinese, learn english for years and use as 2nd language, until i went to Italy and started to learn italian i have opened a new world, a new horizon. i am now part time italian teacher also, most of the ppl give up saying that they cannot remember the irregular and gramma is too complicated, then some even said italian is stupid. to those who stop at irregular verbs, i told them to give up, they cannot learn they are not hard working they are not determined so i dont want to waste my time. i share your video to my students, you are a good teacher, it is not possible to satisfy everyone.

I imagine it must be difficult for any serious teacher not to be offended by such dismissive comments, and I admire your gracious, “tough love” response, which rightfully identifies these reactions as being unconstructive. The “nonsense” and “this isn’t like my language” comments display a kind of linguistic chauvinism, as well as being rooted in frustration, perhaps, and laziness (I can definitely relate to the last two). And unfortunately the anonymous nature of online comments allows people to write harsh things that they might never say to your face. Learning a foreign language is hard, and people - not all, but many - have become intellectually soft. Most of us who follow you are deeply grateful for your knowledgeable, crystal clear, honest, and charming approach to teaching. I depend on my daily dose of Lucrezia even when I’m too lazy to study grammar; I must listen to at least a little Italian to feel that my day is complete. Molti persone dimenticano, oppure ignorano, che le lingue sono costruzioni culturali. Imparare una lingua non è como imparare matematica: non possiamo aspettarci che tutto abbia un perfetto senso logico. Dobbiamo accettare la lingua così com'è. Non ha senso in arrabiarsi con la lingua che voui imparare.
a me, mi piaciono più questi elementi dell'italiano che non esistono nella mia madrelingua, perchè li definiscono l'unicità e straordinarità della lingua. Per esempio il condizionale è un bel modo da dire qualcosa con cortesia, o incertezza, oppure solo pò riservato

How very sad and frustrating to hear: that some (any) people take such a defensive and self-righteous position! Unfortunately, the person who suffers most from such a limiting view (that only their way of speaking, thus also thinking, is the only correct one!) is ultimately them. They are looking at an entire world of thought and expression through a keyhole! 😢Thanks for taking the time to touch on this important topic, in the process further inspiring students who may be discovering difficulties in learning and teachers who may take their students' frustrations too much to heart! La cosa che mi piace di più quando imparo l’italiano è imparare le cose che puoi dire facilmente in italiano che non puoi dire in inglese. O viceversa. Ad esempio, frasi o parole che non esistono nell’altra lingua - quando li imparo, trovo un piacere così grande perché imparo anche perché altre lingue esistono. Perché è bello imparare altre lingue.

When I was 16 I got some french classes with students that were more than 20/30 years older then me, and they already speak other 2 or 3 languages, and at that time I was learning english and french in a beggining level, so I had no previous experience with languages. The experience I had with them changed my learning process, because all the time that our french professor was teach us anything about gramatic they are like "oh but in spanish/italian/english it doesn't work like that" or "in spanish/english/italian it's way easier" or even worse "in portuguese (our native language) we don't say like that", internally I was like "yeahhh that's because here you are lerning french babyyy". So what I mean is when you are learning a language you have to accept it instead of only compare it to your native language, or any other you speak. If you accept it and start to incoporate it, as you did with your native language, it will be much easier!!!!
I'm sure it can feel like there's a lot of pressure on you to come up with new and interesting ideas for videos you've never touched on before, but if it helps at all to know--absolutely anything that comes out of your mouth has been just what I've needed to hear in my italian-learning journey so far, your speech is clear, you're neither too fast nor too slow, you have incredible taste, and I can always trust that whatever you're talking about is advice from a true Italian Raja. Your videos are 100,000 watts of pure, unbiased, carefully prepared intellectual snacks for a starving war-torn island, populated by those of us who are either too overwhelmed when faced with run of the mill rapid fire italian, or who grew up classrooms with teachers whose lexicon is the size of a grocery list. I rarely comment on RUclips videos, so it's difficult not blushing over this, but anyways, just thought I'd say that your videos have kept my sometimes-hopelessness at bay, and thanks for making them!
Lucrezia, you are quite on point regarding everything you say in this video. Upon deciding to learn a new language one must always come with an open mind because of the structural, even cultural differences between one language and another. What I don’t understand is why anyone would brush off your explanations , or call them nonsense. Such attitude is as disrespectful as it is ignorant. And you don’t need to take it. There is nothing, absolutely nothing nonsensical in the things you say. You are a coherent and bright young woman. Keep up the good work.

My native language is Spanish. I can understand about 80% of Italian after being learning it for 5 months and yet I find it very difficult at times. It takes a lot of patient and dedication to learn a new language. You need to enjoy the process because otherwise it wont make sense and you’ll get frustrated.
my first language was Spanish and it has amazed me that I have had people who know only English, no Spanish, try to correct my Spanish. Some people sure are full of themselves.

Ciao, Lucrezia! Sorry that I'm going to continue in English (but I'm a little ashamed of my Italian skills atm). First of all, I find this topic very interesting, thank you for bringing it up. Secondly, I'm teaching English right now and some of my students think it's a better idea to translate words literally instead of acquiring the structures and the expressions used by the natives (they don't find the native expressions useful). One of them even challenged me that she had learned more from a video explained in our native language than by learning the rules in English. It upsets me because I find this approach counterproductive as you said. However, I usually work with adults and I always tell them that they are free to choose the resources they feel are better fit for them to acquire the language. In my opinion, we as foreign language learners should be willing to know that every language is a means to understand how people from other places and cultures see the world. Unfortunately, some would rather ignore this or refrain to understand it. Overall, you articulated your thoughts clearly and amazingly. Grazie mille per tutto!! Cara Lucrecia, studio italiano da 5 anni alla Dante Alighieri di Buenos Aires, sono figlia di italiani, ho sempre ascoltato la lingua anche se nel dialetto calabrese, dai miei genitori, nonni e zii. Quando ho deciso di studiare ho capito che capivo tutto ciò che si parlava e tutto ciò che leggevo, l'ho portato nel sangue, sei il mio riferimento per studiare e rivedere i concetti, sei molto brava e spieghi con chiarezza e dedizione. Ho anche studiato inglese. Ma prendo la lingua come "viene" non mi verrebbe mai in mente di confrontare lo spagnolo con l'italiano, figurati !!! Come dice un altro commento: ¨studiare una lingua è il contrario di studiare matematica¨ Non cambiare mai il tuo modo di essere, sei un ottimo insegnante e una grande persona. One of the most fun parts of learning a new language is those little cool, unique rules, giving "aha" moments!! Language lovers appreciate that. I will add that negative comments about a language having difficult nuances and that it's ridiculous in any way, is a statement really reflecting that particular learner's self-perception in the language learning process. I really enjoyed this video! As a native English speaker who studied and became fluent in Japanese and is now studying Italian, I totally understand these barriers! I myself never really experienced them, but I see it in my peers and coworkers a lot. I had an Italian friend who couldn't understand why Americans say something like "I'll eat when I get home..." He took "get" to mean "prendere" so it made no sense to him. And when you stop and think about it, it doesn't make any sense. It's just the way we happen to say it! All languages have their peculiarities and you just have to learn them. No point in getting (getting!) angry about it. Thank you for a great video, Lucrezia.
While learning a second language, short term frustration is probably not unusual. Long term frustration,however, can cause students to lose motivation. Your advice to gently set aside for a while a particularly difficult concept and return to it at a later date is indeed valuable and constructive. Hai ragione Lucrezia, there is no need for a student, whom has chosen on their own will to learn the language take out their frustration on you or per say, the Italian language. To my believe, this make those people arrogant and they should probably stick to speaking their own language if they can not be open to understand and appreciate that all languages can not be translated to the”t”. I myself get very frustrated because I still can not speak it fluently, however, I am able to understand everything you say, and I appreciate you and your dedication to teach us your beautiful language! Vorrei condividere con voi che state leggendo questo commento una frase che a me piace qui: Imparare una nuova lingua è esattamente uscire dalla sua zona di comfort. Quindi è anche importantissimo assumere un atteggiamento più modesto e continuare a imparare perché ci sono tante nuove cose da scoprire! Se non riesce a superare la sua zona di comfort, è meglio continuare con le sfide più facili e poi affrontare quelle più difficili quando si sente più a suo agio.
I was realizing this while I was taking the CILS test two days ago, the examinator said to us that in those moments one could think to study other things but no, learning languages it's amazing even if it becomes difficult when preparing for a test; when learning things that are different or don't exist in our native language; the beauty of learning other languages is the possibility to know other perspectives of the world, well at least for me.

It is hard for you or any teacher who puts a lot of time and effort in doing what you do. I am fluent in 3 languages, and mediocre in 3 more. Every learner has to find out what’s the best way of learning a particular language. There are generally no bad teachers but BAD learners. In my experience, people who struggle with grammar, are ones who don’t understand their grammar. Also one has to understand that direct translation doesn’t work and at some point one has to familiarise oneself with the culture of the language itself. A joke in one language might not be funny in another language. I can tell you that you are doing a great job. Thank you very much. Learning a language is a commitment, and like any commitment there are highs and lows, positive and negatives, but the definition of commitment is sticking to it through thick and thin. I have been learning italian now for 2 years and some days I feel great and comfortable with my knowledge and other days I feel like I know nothing. But I absolutely love my commitment to learning italian so every single day I show up and see where it takes me. So thank you again for this and all of your content. I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos and they have been a HUGE help for my learning, and I have no doubt will continue to be :)

In effetti, ci sono cose difficili che come tu suggerisci, dovremmo lasciarle per un po’ e tornarci quando ci sentiamo capaci di comprendere. C’è molto da digerire quando si studia un altra lingua. Dobbiamo saper accettare le nostre mancanze e cercare di superarle, altrimenti non acquisiremo mai la lingua, in questo caso l’italiano. Grazie per aver condiviso il tuo modo di pensare e di sentire. Quando ho delle difficolta` nel assorbire un concetto, mi ci metto a parte per qualche ora e poi` ci torno con un nuovo mente. A chi mette in dubbio (🤣🤣🤣) una lingua che vanta una delle più alte letterature del pianeta e che è, indubbiamente, una delle più belle ed espressive, ci sarebbe molto da dire. Lo stesso per chi attacca una splendida e appassionata insegnante quale sei. Ma ritengo non ne valga la pena. Mi limito a ricordare che, come si dice: la madre dei cretini è sempre incinta. Great video. In my view the student should "surrender" to the language, that is, not trying to raise opposition to the linguistic system, and having in mind that things don't need to "have sense", necessarily, since many things that we deem as "logical" are actually just a result of perspective. I had a Chinese teacher that once got baffled that the students weren't able to understand a certain grammar point, claiming that we should easily understand the explanation, since it was "logical". Well, logical for her that grew up speaking the language, not for the rest of us. My advice is, if something seems to be nonsense in a language, don't resist it or ignore it, just give time and with prolonged exposure to the language you will develop a feel for its elements.

Determination and patience are two important qualities when we learn something new, whether it be a language, a musical instrument, a sport, or other. Our reward is the immense satisfaction we have when we progress...as well as the fun we have along the way. I suggest that any struggling students give learning another try; it doesn't matter if we don't understand everything, we are still improving ourselves and we are always progressing. Sono 100 % d'accordo con te, Lucrezia. Con un po' più di brutalità, direi che quelli che non sono capaci di apprezzare la bellezza dell'alterità sono degli imbecilli. Dopo aver ascoltato i primi 3 minuti del video volevo gridare "amen!". 🤣 Scherzi a parte, però, penso che questo sia un argomento molto importante su cui riflettere -- brava per averlo trattato in questo video. Io la vedo così: purtroppo, alcuni studenti, come tu hai detto, dicono certe cose per istinto di frustrazione (che è anche normale), ma poi se ne fanno una ragione, si rimettono in carreggiata e continuano a studiare. Spesso questi studenti hanno una ragione molto forte per la quale hanno scelto di imparare l'italiano --e ne sono consapevoli. Altri invece indugiano sulla frustrazione e si lasciano sopraffare e non continuano più a imparare. Questo perché probabilmente non avevano una motivazione molto forte già dall'inizio. Pertanto, se una persona/studente ha alla base una importante e chiara motivazione per imparare l'italiano e ne è consapevole, sarà molto più probabile che continui e riesca ad andare al di là delle frustrazioni provvisorie; e, infine, la sua mente si aprirà a un altro modo di vedere il mondo (che è il dono che si riceve quando si impara una nuova lingua)e quello che poi, all'inizio, poteva sembrare "nonsense" diventa "meraviglia" (perché si è trovato un nuovo modo di esprimersi e di descrivere il mondo). 😊

Ciao Lucrezia. Finii un corso di italiano qualche tempo fa, però guardo spesso i tuoi video. Sono molto utili per ripassare tantissimi argomenti. Dopo alqune figuracce con i "falsi amici" 🥲 , capii che dovevo assolutamente dimenticare le strutture grammaticali della mia lingua madre (lo spagnolo) ed avere la mente aperta per imparare l'italiano. Trovai degli argomenti che secondo me non "avevano senso" oppure che no avevano niente di simile in spagnolo, ma è proprio per quelli che la lingua italiana è così bella! ❤ Oltre l'italiano parlo anche inglese e la mia percezione è la stessa. What a shame someone called your beautiful language "nonsense". I am trying hard to learn Italian for a trip in May. Yes, the grammar is hard for me. I know fluency and mastery of Italian grammar are way down the line for me, well past this trip. I am 66 years old and I know that I may never understand some aspects of the Italian language. I have had to temper my expectations because of how hard it is to learn and the short time I have to do so. This makes me feel a little disappointed. You are a wonderful teacher. I sensed your exasperation or frustration about the topic from listening to you. Thank you for what you do. Your videos help me a lot, and I appreciate your videos teaching me your beautiful language very much!
Lucrezia cara, parliamoci chiaro: tu sei fra i pochi, anzi pochissimi, che svolgono questa attività prendendola (e prendendosi) sul serio. So che non giudicheresti mai il lavoro degli altri, ma io dico quello che vedo. Insegnamento e studio sono due lati della stessa medaglia, e sono entrambi soggetti agli stessi dualismi: c'è chi studia... e chi "raccatta" pillole di sapere; e parimenti c'è chi insegna... e chi fa il "porta-a-porta" con la valigetta di pillole. Due modi di intendere la fruizione e la divulgazione che, a parer mio, non possono stare sullo stesso piano, e che difficilmente possono comunicare. Chi raccatta pillole si aspetta di interagire con mercanti di pillole, e il mercante sa esattamente che cosa il suo pubblico raccatta più volentieri, sicché entrambi saranno soddisfatti e convintissimi l'uno dei propri progressi (???) e l'altro del proprio buon lavoro (?????). Il giorno in cui un mercante facesse al raccatta-pillole la sorpresa di dirgli qualcosa tipo «Sai che c'è di nuovo? Il passato remoto esiste ancora, e non è vero che lo usano solo i siciliani»... be', il mercante perderebbe in un sol colpo tutta la sua clientela, perché quella di un mercante di pillole è una clientela "viziata", abituata male, costantemente lusingata nel suo sfiorare gli argomenti, nel suo pigro trascinare i piedi fra un argomento e l'altro senza mai apprendere niente sul serio e, soprattutto, senza mai apprezzare niente davvero. Ho in mente decine e decine di insegnanti di italiano per stranieri, qui su RUclips, da cui non mi aspetterei mai un video di questo genere... per il semplice fatto che almeno i due terzi delle loro energie sono investiti con piglio quasi industriale nell'evitare in tutti i modi di far sbuffare il povero cucciolo, col rischio - non sia mai... - di causargli uno choc cognitivo. E poi c'è Lucrezia... che per amare troppo quello che fa si becca le e-mail piene di recriminazioni assurde da parte di gente assurda. Ecco, se fossi uno straniero alle prese con l'italiano, fra l'insegnante e il mercante io so bene chi sceglierei. In gamba!

Hai ragione. A volte ho visto lo stesso atteggiamento negli studenti dell'Università in cui lavoro (classi di economia). L'apprendimento richiede uno sforzo da parte dello studente. I professori lo hanno già fatto e offrono agli studenti la loro esperienza con le conoscenze, ma ciò non esonera lo studente dal fare anche uno sforzo.

Learning a language IS difficult but I can't believe someone would just throw it in your face and say "it's nonsense". How arrogant. This video was wonderful. I am in complete awe of people like you who speak 2 languages fluently. Your videos are amazing. Thank you so much.
I remember a student I had who was studying the topic of education in a group and we had "a steep learning curve" as a lexical unit. She (a middle-aged lady) pretty much threw a tantrum saying "there's no way anyone but a 12-year-old would say that, you're lying" when I said I had heard an example of that from an adult person just the day before. So yeah, while it is rare, it does happen.
There was also a time when I had a male student double my age saying how women are always less competent. I really wanted to send him to a male teacher and also tell him that I reached his level of English (which isn't my first language) by a quarter of his age, and that already disproves his point. But raising a conflict in a group isn't a wise choice, so we had to go on studying.
So yeah, there are a lot of ignorant students, but luckily there are a lot of sweet and great students

i am native chinese, learn english for years and use as 2nd language, until i went to Italy and started to learn italian i have opened a new world, a new horizon. i am now part time italian teacher also, most of the ppl give up saying that they cannot remember the irregular and gramma is too complicated, then some even said italian is stupid. to those who stop at irregular verbs, i told them to give up, they cannot learn they are not hard working they are not determined so i dont want to waste my time. i share your video to my students, you are a good teacher, it is not possible to satisfy everyone.

I imagine it must be difficult for any serious teacher not to be offended by such dismissive comments, and I admire your gracious, “tough love” response, which rightfully identifies these reactions as being unconstructive. The “nonsense” and “this isn’t like my language” comments display a kind of linguistic chauvinism, as well as being rooted in frustration, perhaps, and laziness (I can definitely relate to the last two). And unfortunately the anonymous nature of online comments allows people to write harsh things that they might never say to your face. Learning a foreign language is hard, and people - not all, but many - have become intellectually soft. Most of us who follow you are deeply grateful for your knowledgeable, crystal clear, honest, and charming approach to teaching. I depend on my daily dose of Lucrezia even when I’m too lazy to study grammar; I must listen to at least a little Italian to feel that my day is complete. Thank you for having this chat and for all that you do for us.

Imparare una lingua non è como imparare matematica: non possiamo aspettarci che tutto abbia un perfetto senso logico. Dobbiamo accettare la lingua così com'è. How very sad and frustrating to hear: that some (any) people take such a defensive and self-righteous position! Unfortunately, the person who suffers most from such a limiting view (that only their way of speaking, thus also thinking, is the only correct one!) is ultimately them. I cannot express how much I love your take on this (important) topic, Lucrezia. I would have enough reason to appreciate you, besides this, for all the multitude of ways in which you attempt to help us learn (video shorts, formal instructive videos, blogs, etc) -they have been incredibly useful to me as I study Italian using the Duolingo app, and have slowly become more and more able to pick up what people are saying in Italian or correct minor confusions I may have by using your videos.........but you give me/us yet another reason to appreciate you, as an instructor, with this video and topic.

La cosa che mi piace di più quando imparo l’italiano è imparare le cose che puoi dire facilmente in italiano che non puoi dire in inglese. O viceversa. Ad esempio, frasi o parole che non esistono nell’altra lingua - quando li imparo, trovo un piacere così grande perché imparo anche perché altre lingue esistono. Perché è bello imparare altre lingue.

When I was 16 I got some french classes with students that were more than 20/30 years older then me, and they already speak other 2 or 3 languages, and at that time I was learning english and french in a beggining level, so I had no previous experience with languages. The experience I had with them changed my learning process, because all the time that our french professor was teach us anything about gramatic they are like "oh but in spanish/italian/english it doesn't work like that" or "in spanish/english/italian it's way easier" or even worse "in portuguese (our native language) we don't say like that", internally I was like "yeahhh that's because here you are lerning french babyyy". So what I mean is when you are learning a language you have to accept it instead of only compare it to your native language, or any other you speak. If you accept it and start to incoporate it, as you did with your native language, it will be much easier!!!!
I'm sure it can feel like there's a lot of pressure on you to come up with new and interesting ideas for videos you've never touched on before, but if it helps at all to know--absolutely anything that comes out of your mouth has been just what I've needed to hear in my italian-learning journey so far, your speech is clear, you're neither too fast nor too slow, you have incredible taste, and I can always trust that whatever you're talking about is advice from a true Italian Raja. Your videos are 100,000 watts of pure, unbiased, carefully prepared intellectual snacks for a starving war-torn island, populated by those of us who are either too overwhelmed when faced with run of the mill rapid fire italian, or who grew up classrooms with teachers whose lexicon is the size of a grocery list. I rarely comment on RUclips videos, so it's difficult not blushing over this, but anyways, just thought I'd say that your videos have kept my sometimes-hopelessness at bay, and thanks for making them!

Lucrezia, you are quite on point regarding everything you say in this video. Upon deciding to learn a new language one must always come with an open mind because of the structural, even cultural differences between one language and another. What I don’t understand is why anyone would brush off your explanations , or call them nonsense. Such attitude is as disrespectful as it is ignorant. And you don’t need to take it. There is nothing, absolutely nothing nonsensical in the things you say. You are a coherent and bright young woman. Keep up the good work.

My native language is Spanish. I can understand about 80% of Italian after being learning it for 5 months and yet I find it very difficult at times. It takes a lot of patient and dedication to learn a new language. You need to enjoy the process because otherwise it wont make sense and you’ll get frustrated.
my first language was Spanish and it has amazed me that I have had people who know only English, no Spanish, try to correct my Spanish. Some people sure are full of themselves.

Ciao, Lucrezia! Sorry that I'm going to continue in English (but I'm a little ashamed of my Italian skills atm).
First of all, I find this topic very interesting, thank you for bringing it up.
Secondly, I'm teaching English right now and some of my students think it's a better idea to translate words literally instead of acquiring the structures and the expressions used by the natives (they don't find the native expressions useful). One of them even challenged me that she had learned more from a video explained in our native language than by learning the rules in English. It upsets me because I find this approach counterproductive as you said. However, I usually work with adults and I always tell them that they are free to choose the resources they feel are better fit for them to acquire the language.
In my opinion, we as foreign language learners should be willing to know that every language is a means to understand how people from other places and cultures see the world. Unfortunately, some would rather ignore this or refrain to understand it.

Cara Lucrecia, studio italiano da 5 anni alla Dante Alighieri di Buenos Aires, sono figlia di italiani, ho sempre ascoltato la lingua anche se nel dialetto calabrese, dai miei genitori, nonni e zii. Quando ho deciso di studiare ho capito che capivo tutto ciò che si parlava e tutto ciò che leggevo, l'ho portato nel sangue, sei il mio riferimento per studiare e rivedere i concetti, sei molto brava e spieghi con chiarezza e dedizione. Ho anche studiato inglese. Ma prendo la lingua come "viene" non mi verrebbe mai in mente di confrontare lo spagnolo con l'italiano, figurati !!! Come dice un altro commento: ¨studiare una lingua è il contrario di studiare matematica¨

One of the most fun parts of learning a new language is those little cool, unique rules, giving "aha" moments!! Language lovers appreciate that. I will add that negative comments about a language having difficult nuances and that it's ridiculous in any way, is a statement really reflecting that particular learner's self-perception in the language learning process.

As a native English speaker who studied and became fluent in Japanese and is now studying Italian, I totally understand these barriers!
I myself never really experienced them, but I see it in my peers and coworkers a lot. Some people want to almost debate a language because they don't "agree" with some type of grammar, it's crazy...😅

I had an Italian friend who couldn't understand why Americans say something like "I'll eat when I get home..." He took "get" to mean "prendere" so it made no sense to him. And when you stop and think about it, it doesn't make any sense. It's just the way we happen to say it! All languages have their peculiarities and you just have to learn them. No point in getting (getting!) angry about it. Thank you for a great video, Lucrezia.

While learning a second language, short term frustration is probably not unusual. Long term frustration,however, can cause students to lose motivation. Your advice to gently set aside for a while a particularly difficult concept and return to it at a later date is indeed valuable and constructive.

To my believe, this make those people arrogant and they should probably stick to speaking their own language if they can not be open to understand and appreciate that all languages can not be translated to the”t”. I myself get very frustrated because I still can not speak it fluently, however, I am able to understand everything you say, and I appreciate you and your dedication to teach us your beautiful language! Vorrei condividere con voi che state leggendo questo commento una frase che a me piace qui: Imparare una nuova lingua è esattamente uscire dalla sua zona di comfort. Quindi è anche importantissimo assumere un atteggiamento più modesto e continuare a imparare perché ci sono tante nuove cose da scoprire! Se non riesce a superare la sua zona di comfort, è meglio continuare con le sfide più facili e poi affrontare quelle più difficili quando si sente più a suo agio.
I was realizing this while I was taking the CILS test two days ago, the examinator said to us that in those moments one could think to study other things but no, learning languages it's amazing even if it becomes difficult when preparing for a test; when learning things that are different or don't exist in our native language; the beauty of learning other languages is the possibility to know other perspectives of the world, well at least for me.

Tanti studenti eravamo positivi, però un paio di studenti eravamo come la tua descrisione. Ho pensato che questa era molto scortese e inutile. Ovviamente italiano è non come l'inglese (in questo caso). Era come queste persone hanno voluto la insegnante cambiere la lingua. Fortunatamente, questi studenti solo sono stare per uno settimane. Grazie mille per i tuoi videi. Sono molto auito.
A veces el aprendizaje es difícil , y a veces hago pausas y me desconecto por períodos de estudiarlo como cuando encuentro casos como el uso del NE que no existe en español o la conjugación de verbos irregulares, pero tus videos me mantienen alive, nunca dejo de verlos y voy aprendiendo poco a poco, gracias portus lecciones porque habemos gente como yo que te seguimos desde siempre y sos la profesora favorita de muchos, por favor no pares tus lecciones mai ¡¡😉

Secondo, come professore d'inglese io anche ho trovato degli studenti come quelli che hai descritto nel video, che dicono che una cosa è difficile quando in realtà vogliono dire che è nuovo, e che non ne hanno studiato.
E non posso con gli studenti che mi dicono che ‘non è così nella mia lingua’, perché vogliono che tutto sia facile quando tutti qui sapiamo che imparare una lingua è un progetto mooooolto lungo che non si impara in un giorno!

It is hard for you or any teacher who puts a lot of time and effort in doing what you do.
I am fluent in 3 languages, and mediocre in 3 more. Every learner has to find out what’s the best way of learning a particular language.
There are generally no bad teachers but BAD learners.
In my experience, people who struggle with grammar, are ones who don’t understand their grammar.
Also one has to understand that direct translation doesn’t work and at some point one has to familiarise oneself with the culture of the language itself. A joke in one language might not be funny in another language.
I can tell you that you are doing a great job. Thank you very much.

Learning a language is a commitment, and like any commitment there are highs and lows, positive and negatives, but the definition of commitment is sticking to it through thick and thin. I have been learning italian now for 2 years and some days I feel great and comfortable with my knowledge and other days I feel like I know nothing. But I absolutely love my commitment to learning italian so every single day I show up and see where it takes me. So thank you again for this and all of your content. I thoroughly enjoy all of your videos and they have been a HUGE help for my learning, and I have no doubt will continue to be :)

In effetti, ci sono cose difficili che come tu suggerisci, dovremmo lasciarle per un po’ e tornarci quando ci sentiamo capaci di comprendere. C’è molto da digerire quando si studia un altra lingua. Dobbiamo saper accettare le nostre mancanze e cercare di superarle, altrimenti non acquisiremo mai la lingua, in questo caso l’italiano. Grazie per aver condiviso il tuo modo di pensare e di sentire. È molto valido, poiché in ciascuno dei tuoi video puoi vedere lo sforzo e la dedizione che metti nel farlo. Ciao! 🙋🏼♀️

Lucrezia, sottoscrivo ogni tua parola e apprezzo la tua pazienza e tolleranza. A chi mette in dubbio (🤣🤣🤣) una lingua che vanta una delle più alte letterature del pianeta e che è, indubbiamente, una delle più belle ed espressive, ci sarebbe molto da dire. Lo stesso per chi attacca una splendida e appassionata insegnante quale sei. Ma ritengo non ne valga la pena. Mi limito a ricordare che, come si dice: la madre dei cretini è sempre incinta. Great video. In my view the student should "surrender" to the language, that is, not trying to raise opposition to the linguistic system, and having in mind that things don't need to "have sense", necessarily, since many things that we deem as "logical" are actually just a result of perspective. I had a Chinese teacher that once got baffled that the students weren't able to understand a certain grammar point, claiming that we should easily understand the explanation, since it was "logical". Well, logical for her that grew up speaking the language, not for the rest of us. My advice is, if something seems to be nonsense in a language, don't resist it or ignore it, just give time and with prolonged exposure to the language you will develop a feel for its elements.

Our reward is the immense satisfaction we have when we progress...as well as the fun we have along the way. I suggest that any struggling students give learning another try; it doesn't matter if we don't understand everything, we are still improving ourselves and we are always progressing. Dopo aver ascoltato i primi 3 minuti del video volevo gridare "amen!". 🤣 Scherzi a parte, però, penso che questo sia un argomento molto importante su cui riflettere -- brava per averlo trattato in questo video. Io la vedo così: purtroppo, alcuni studenti, come tu hai detto, dicono certe cose per istinto di frustrazione (che è anche normale), ma poi se ne fanno una ragione, si rimettono in carreggiata e continuano a studiare. Spesso questi studenti hanno una ragione molto forte per la quale hanno scelto di imparare l'italiano --e ne sono consapevoli. Altri invece indugiano sulla frustrazione e si lasciano sopraffare e non continuano più a imparare. Questo perché probabilmente non avevano una motivazione molto forte già dall'inizio. Pertanto, se una persona/studente ha alla base una importante e chiara motivazione per imparare l'italiano e ne è consapevole, sarà molto più probabile che continui e riesca ad andare al di là delle frustrazioni provvisorie; e, infine, la sua mente si aprirà a un altro modo di vedere il mondo (che è il dono che si riceve quando si impara una nuova lingua)e quello che poi, all'inizio, poteva sembrare "nonsense" diventa "meraviglia" (perché si è trovato un nuovo modo di esprimersi e di descrivere il mondo). 😊

Finii un corso di italiano qualche tempo fa, però guardo spesso i tuoi video. Sono molto utili per ripassare tantissimi argomenti.
Dopo alqune figuracce con i "falsi amici" 🥲 , capii che dovevo assolutamente dimenticare le strutture grammaticali della mia lingua madre (lo spagnolo) ed avere la mente aperta per imparare l'italiano.
Trovai degli argomenti che secondo me non "avevano senso" oppure che no avevano niente di simile in spagnolo, ma è proprio per quelli che la lingua italiana è così bella! ❤
Oltre l'italiano parlo anche inglese e la mia percezione è la stessa.

What a shame someone called your beautiful language "nonsense". I am trying hard to learn Italian for a trip in May. Yes, the grammar is hard for me. I know fluency and mastery of Italian grammar are way down the line for me, well past this trip. I am 66 years old and I know that I may never understand some aspects of the Italian language. I have had to temper my expectations because of how hard it is to learn and the short time I have to do so. This makes me feel a little disappointed. You are a wonderful teacher. I sensed your exasperation or frustration about the topic from listening to you. Thank you for what you do. Your videos help me a lot, and I appreciate your videos teaching me your beautiful language very much!
Lucrezia cara, parliamoci chiaro: tu sei fra i pochi, anzi pochissimi, che svolgono questa attività prendendola (e prendendosi) sul serio. So che non giudicheresti mai il lavoro degli altri, ma io dico quello che vedo. Insegnamento e studio sono due lati della stessa medaglia, e sono entrambi soggetti agli stessi dualismi: c'è chi studia... e chi "raccatta" pillole di sapere; e parimenti c'è chi insegna... e chi fa il "porta-a-porta" con la valigetta di pillole. Due modi di intendere la fruizione e la divulgazione che, a parer mio, non possono stare sullo stesso piano, e che difficilmente possono comunicare. Chi raccatta pillole si aspetta di interagire con mercanti di pillole, e il mercante sa esattamente che cosa il suo pubblico raccatta più volentieri, sicché entrambi saranno soddisfatti e convintissimi l'uno dei propri progressi (???) e l'altro del proprio buon lavoro (?????). Il giorno in cui un mercante facesse al raccatta-pillole la sorpresa di dirgli qualcosa tipo «Sai che c'è di nuovo? Il passato remoto esiste ancora, e non è vero che lo usano solo i siciliani»... be', il mercante perderebbe in un sol colpo tutta la sua clientela, perché quella di un mercante di pillole è una clientela "viziata", abituata male, costantemente lusingata nel suo sfiorare gli argomenti, nel suo pigro trascinare i piedi fra un argomento e l'altro senza mai apprendere niente sul serio e, soprattutto, senza mai apprezzare niente davvero. Ho in mente decine e decine di insegnanti di italiano per stranieri, qui su RUclips, da cui non mi aspetterei mai un video di questo genere... per il semplice fatto che almeno i due terzi delle loro energie sono investiti con piglio quasi industriale nell'evitare in tutti i modi di far sbuffare il povero cucciolo, col rischio - non sia mai... - di causargli uno choc cognitivo. E poi c'è Lucrezia... che per amare troppo quello che fa si becca le e-mail piene di recriminazioni assurde da parte di gente assurda. Ecco, se fossi uno straniero alle prese con l'italiano, fra l'insegnante e il mercante io so bene chi sceglierei. In gamba!

Hai ragione. A volte ho visto lo stesso atteggiamento negli studenti dell'Università in cui lavoro (classi di economia). L'apprendimento richiede uno sforzo da parte dello studente. I professori lo hanno già fatto e offrono agli studenti la loro esperienza con le conoscenze, ma ciò non esonera lo studente dal fare anche uno sforzo.
