Yeah, why is there DRM in the cables we use to connect our devices? Seems both ineffective and potentially the reason for certain problems like this, given how little thought is put into DRM most of the time
I just hope that in the long run we will move over to USB4. Main reason is actually, that HDMI is not an open standard and the newer ones are kept close, so that you can't build open source software with it...
encrypting the hdmi signal so you cant record netflix or whatever on HDCP compliant devices. Basically from source to display, anything in between wont be able to see the content
@@zsoltpeterdaniel8413 if hdcp is working, you should only be able to record a black Netflix screen. AFAIK, Netflix only triggers or at strictly requires HDCP on the highres 4k stream or was it everything above 720p... Anyhow, there are hdcp signal strippers available so you can use a capture card. A common technique though is to use a HDMI splitter -- somehow it bugs out the HDCP in the outputs without blackscreening yet the source thinks its still enforced.
It warms my heart to see that this video correctly attributes the problem to Panasonic. Nice work on accurate reporting here. Oh, and HDMI Forum members likely know the root cause of the issue, they just aren't telling the public...and probably never will? Good luck returning your 2020 AVRs.

Every streaming service, hard to get 4k on some devices only because you don't have a special cable, or you have some strange software or a second screen. I can't view 4k prime video because some stupid standard, and Netflix only if I use the windows app.
People have struck deals with cinemas so they can fit a camera behind the projector screen and rip the latest movie so they could put it on dvd and sell it on the black market. If all they had to do was plug in a burner to an output don't you think that someone would do it?
Watching 4k prime on HDMI through Windows, no go.. Switch to same display but Roku not using HDMI.. Fine. Same display, capabilities.. But the fact that Windows connects the display via HDMI.. Disables 4k...1080 is fine. So I'd love to hear the mental gymnastics argument for this
Dynamic HDR is about varying brightness of backlight in LCD display between dark and light images to get that desired high contrast ratio, because static contrast ratio (single frame contrast) for LCD's not better than 3000:1, and it's nowhere near enough for 1000 levels of brightness required by HDR content.
This is why I wish we would all just move to DisplayPort. It’s an open standard with 4K options. Manufacturers don’t have to pay a royalty or licensing fee to include it. Apple had the right idea with Thunderbolt 2
Displayport having “no issues” vs HDMI is like claiming Macs are immune to viruses. I mean technically, sure there are plenty of advantages depending on what you wanna do... but active/passive choices, DP-to-HDMI and miniDP adapters that are almost required as no input and output devices EVER incorporate the same plug as each other (and most non-PC components like TV’s, cheap monitors and HT gear don’t even have DP), daisychaining, configurable DP versions you can enable or disable on displays... just holy hell, let me plug it in and go. HDMI’s familiar, it’s everywhere, it’s easy. Plug it in, boom. DP takes research. In short, it sucks. But it’s also where all the high end standards live, like if you want multi-monitor high/adaptable refresh rates like g-sync and freesync. But dear god it is by no means a standard that’s had “no issues for years”. HDMI’s ease of use and universal standards make it so much nicer to outfit a home with. Get to the PC world though, and DP becomes the required but a pain in the ass standard.
You can use a TRRS 3.5mm jack for YPbPr. Those are only one small, dumb cable and are infinitely reversible, so they're markedly better than HDMI for video. I still use dual-link DVI anyway, so none of it really matters.
Yeah totally. It would be really nice if this kills HDMI and makes DisplayPort the new default standard. Like seriously, DisplayPort could do 8k 60hz for the past 3 years now and the new 2.0 can do 16k 60z and 8k 120hz. Even with both standards we still have TVs artificially pumping fps for no reason.

After getting a Blu-ray DVD player, I started re-purchasing some of my favourite movies in Blue-ray. But to be honest, it doesn't make it much more superior experience. A great movie will still be great both on DVD and on Blu-ray. A bad movie however... Not kidding, there have been occasions where 'super real life' audio or video actually broke my suspense of disbelief. Example 1: while watching the 'digitally enhanced' Star Wars trilogy in the theatre back in the late 1990s, during the scene where both droids are in the Death Star guard room and some stormtroopers knock on the metal door, I snapped my head back to the fire exit on my right in the theatre, because the sound was so realistic I thought someone was knocking on the fire exit door. Example 2: while watching "Platoon (1986)" on Blue-ray for the first time, I noticed some odd stuff on the face of the protagonist. After careful analysis, I came to the conclusion that I was seeing his pores.
Yep. True. The first hardware generation often does not comply 100% to the spec. Often because manufacturers want to sell their chip first so they already design it while the spec is not yet final.

Ah, yes, this limit on 8K 120hz gaming is very important to keep in mind for those of us who are using a GTX 750ti that's held together by duck tape and super glue.
I hate it when the gadget (signal producer) doesn't allow you to override any of the HDMI signal parameters, relying on only the device's internal handshake. If you can override, you can often get around bugs in the receiver's implementation.
imagine buying new 8k equipment? oooh. Can't relate. But in all seriousness this is why I wait and don't rush to get stuff like this. Wait for everyone else to work out the kinks.

It's probably easier to remember for most people. Although I'll wake up in the morning and mot remember even reading that. I did day MOST people.
No, it’s the Handy Dandy MOVIE Input
I just hope that in the long run we will move over to USB4.
Main reason is actually, that HDMI is not an open standard and the newer ones are kept close, so that you can't build open source software with it...
5 months later I'm learning about all of this.. is this problem fixed ? do I spend the money on HDMI 2.1 or not waste my money
I love how every improvement people make to "camping" actually makes it less and less like true "camping"... so then just stay at home
Like that guy on Silicon Valley that brings a ps4 and a 60 inch tv for going off the grid
Wait till Starlink goes online, that will be TRUE camping: playing online games in the woods.
Wait, what BS is this about “copyright compliance”?
What does it consist of?
encrypting the hdmi signal so you cant record netflix or whatever on HDCP compliant devices. Basically from source to display, anything in between wont be able to see the content
It's called DRM. Digital Rights Management. But really it should be called Digital Restrictions Management.
@@huskkyy on a pc you can record whatever you can with obs or other stuff so hdcp is useless
@@ayuchanayuko lol HDMI is really broken

It warms my heart to see that this video correctly attributes the problem to Panasonic. Nice work on accurate reporting here. Oh, and HDMI Forum members likely know the root cause of the issue, they just aren't telling the public...and probably never will? Good luck returning your 2020 AVRs.

"Copy Protection"? Who does that over HDMI anyway?
Lots of media devices like bluray players.
Every streaming service, hard to get 4k on some devices only because you don't have a special cable, or you have some strange software or a second screen. I can't view 4k prime video because some stupid standard, and Netflix only if I use the windows app.
Monsters, thats who.
So I'd love to hear the mental gymnastics argument for this
"Dynamic HDR"? Dynamic High Dynamic Range?
Dynamic Bitrate Negotiation HDR?
Dynamic HDR is about varying brightness of backlight in LCD display between dark and light images to get that desired high contrast ratio, because static contrast ratio (single frame contrast) for LCD's not better than 3000:1, and it's nowhere near enough for 1000 levels of brightness required by HDR content.
This is why I wish we would all just move to DisplayPort. It’s an open standard with 4K options. Manufacturers don’t have to pay a royalty or licensing fee to include it.

@@misterx8448 well you wouldn't have a problem with HDMI 2.1 then, right??
5:20 Linus completely forgets what the video he just shot was about. I love this. This is my brain in 2020 as well. Thank you for leaving this in.
You can use a TRRS 3.5mm jack for YPbPr. Those are only one small, dumb cable and are infinitely reversible, so they're markedly better than HDMI for video.
I still use dual-link DVI anyway, so none of it really matters.

Like seriously, DisplayPort could do 8k 60hz for the past 3 years now and the new 2.0 can do 16k 60z and 8k 120hz.
Even with both standards we still have TVs artificially pumping fps for no reason.

The problems were that the customers were getting 24400 speeds which obviously was not what was bought. It took almost 6 months to fix.

When are standard interfaces going to get flared sockets and beveled connectors so you can plug them in easily by feel.
That would make the connectors larger, in a time when manufacturers are desperately seeking to make ever-smaller devices.

I hate it when the gadget (signal producer) doesn't allow you to override any of the HDMI signal parameters, relying on only the device's internal handshake. If you can override, you can often get around bugs in the receiver's implementation.

Regarding HDCP, maybe it's more of a mechanism for the HDMI alliance to extract licence costs from manufacturers than be effective DRM. AFAIK a HDMI licence/royalty fee is applied to every device that uses it, and that includes passive cables/adaptors.
