You know it's getting real close when the inflow starts kicking into gear like it did around 5:00. It's crazy how few people understand that tornados almost always extend out beyond their visible funnels and how far out it can be when dealing with violent tornadoes like this.
This footage is crazy!!!! Interesting how you’re sitting there filming as lots of traffic whizzes by, and you almost don’t notice that at some point there’s no traffic anymore in either direction. You’re actually inside that thing.
I have driven past the debris field 2 miles west of Chapman on the south side many times and it still staggers the mind... the one that devasted Chapman just 6 years earlier caused me to stop by City Hall and make a donation to their tornado relief fund. You are always in the bullseye in central Kansas! Great video!
David has unlocked the key to having a woman trust you. Just drive within 100 yds of a tornado, keep your calm, and don't get her killed by 100 mph wind.
I wonder about the people in the passing vehicles. Were some of them intentionally trying to get out of the tornado's path? Did some not even know or care that a tornado was nearby?
Oh, they most likely knew, but stopping and sitting in a car during a tornado isn't the best plan of action. At least find a stop and find a building to get into. Or get under an overpass. They probably just realized that it wasn't yet coming towards I70 and it was around the time that people were trying to get home from work, so that's probably what they were doing. Or they were chasers themselves.
This being Kansas people were probably able to judge where and when it would cross the road. Notice that the traffic stops about a minute or two beforehand. Only these madlads were brave/ stupid enough to get this close.
The rotation on this tornado was absolutely insane. I remember this one. I lived in Chapman at the time so we booked it West and followed it. Come to think of it, im pretty sure that's my car at 2:17 😂
I mean, yeah, I have to say it was fascinating to watch only like a mile or two from your house, but knowing what happened to people's houses that my dad knows and is friends with. Pretty sucky. Winds so powerful that a stick went right through a tractor tire, which isn't an easy feat. They found their cows miles away from where they originally were and some of them had to be put down. My dad's friend got a stick through his hand. Thankfully it was the only injury out of the whole thing, but still. My dad said as he was standing outside, my neighborhood was close enough that they could actually see the debris getting sucked into it and being spit out. One house was literally just a floor by the time all was done. Talk about open floor plan. Good thing most people in Tornado Alley know to get some really good insurance in case of this type of stuff. Oh, and my dad's friend's brand new truck survived, while his wife's and son's cars were half way across the yard and his tractor was tipped over. Not even a little tiny scratch on the truck though. Just moved some sticks and leaves and bam, clean as a whistle. It was a pretty wild tornado for Abilene. We usually don't get them that close, at least not on that side.
Yeah that one moved pretty slow. You wouldn't be that close to the El Reno tornado. Besides it being so big,and grew so fast, it was moving 50mph at times and the RFD that close to the El Reno was recorded at 150mph to possibly 200mph.
hey david hows it going im confused lool it looks like you and the tornado were hauling ass then i read it was stationary wtf lool yes that was a freaking really pissed off tornado rofl id hate to see that coming at me my only fear is night time monster storms it sounds like a blowtorch or a f 14 engine or a wterfall some shit like that we had tornadoes in minnesota on thursday in sept im 52 thats a once in a lifetime event in my state allways stay safe mate cheers
All it would have taken while sitting stopped sideways on a major interstate would be a speeding chaser or a 1/2 asleep trucker and you could have had a Tbone with that tornado.
After I was in position, you'll notice that traffic stops coming at one point.. At that point, it was completely closed on both ends by law enforcement. There was one other chaser in there with me and they were waiting back down the road a bit.

Great video!
Great footage!. I was just a ways away from ya filming off of old Milford road. Scarey day but oh so cool.
Was an amazing day.
Absolutely amazing video! But be careful out there, David!

A very violent rain wrapped monster wedge! I think I would back up some! Reminds me of Moore tornado!
That roar is incredible
I was almost hoping for a
'clickbait' comment so I be a smart addition, lol, this is INCREDIBLE footage!
😁🤙🏼
This tornado was so close to being rated EF-5...

A lot of storm chasers would bash you for the overpass advice
Ppl can't just stop on the highway right...

@@fabiana7157 After May 3, 1999 they'd have good reason to do so. There were horrific deaths and injuries due to people stopping under an overpass.

Did you see where it ripped up the railroad tracks west of Chapman?
I would feel comfortable storm chasing with you. You display a quiet confidence based on experience but not recklessness.
Sweet. We were maybe a mile or two in front of where it crossed I70. Very cool day of chasing.

You were very brave to get so close to this monster !
She trust you David, she doesn’t trust the tornado lol
Great footage. Is your co-pilot french canadian by any chance?
Yes, she is French Canadian.
How to impress a lady on the first date.
You've got guts to sit there and watch that monster approach you.
Superb video! I'm amazed at how slow it moved

This thing looked just like the May 20, 2013 Moore tornado at its peak intensity.
This was cute. She obviously had a blast. Good times!

Thanks. I missed it. So Texas? Is youtube going to be the best place to find your stream?
10:40 “This is gonna pick up the car!” He replies, “No it ain’t.” That woulda been the last conscious sentence I spoke if that were my wife 😂
are you going to do live storm media when they get it up and running
How many miles did this thing travel?
I'm not sure I haven't seen the map but it was stationary or moving slow much of the time.
Jon Jukes it traveled 26 miles
Jeez I remember this this was terrifying
