Me: I want to join 10th Mountain!
Army: No Problem!
Me: (Gets sent to Fort Polk, LA) 😭
The time will come when I will be forced to go to JRTC. Everyone i have met in the army says fort polk is hot garbage. Fort puke
Good ole Patriot Brigade
Poor soul
There not even moutians there
Polk was my favorite duty station. On and off duty.
I'm really good at call of duty. How do I join Delta Force?
submit your statistics and upload your trickshit videos :)
You gotta go Infantry then sf eventually try out for selection.
@@michaelsealy5366 Can I provide them with proof of my Call of Duty scores?
Eric S Are you like 5 ? No you can not Delta Force is a highly secretive special operations unit. It take time , dedication , a lot of training, experience etc.

Spent 6 years in the 10th Mountain as an 11B, enjoyed the time I spent there. The 10th trains hard and fights even harder.
Climb to glory
how many times you deployed?
18th airborne core stays ready to deploy at ALL times.
Tyfys bro
Yo. How do I get there?? I’m prior service marine and I’d like to get the 10th mountain patch. 🙏🏼
I’m 82nd Vet. What I did was I Volunteered out of my AIT. They will ask who wants to go airborne at the beginning and at the end. My 82nd Airborne brothers have a tradition of taking volunteers. There was 5 of us from different Platoons who volunteered at the end and we all ended up in 82nd. I would say your best chances are to volunteer and you better know how to run. 82nd ALL THE WAY!!!
I’ve never served, but I’m a bit of a military nerd. I’ve always considered the 82nd Airborne the army equivalent of the Marine Corps as far as culture and fighting spirit. Mad respect for all vets.
82nd also. I went into a more techie mos (satcom) but also had jump school in my contract, was almost a guarantee to got to 82nd. “Critical short” mos’s with the 1p agree good guarantees. Airborne!
My son just got orders to the mighty Eighty Deuce. I'm currently obsessed with all things airborne. AATW!
My father was in the 82nd and im hoping to get in as well
I must have lived a charmed life. I got the 10th MTN at Ft. Drum coming right out of AIT in 1988 without even asking for it, and then spent the next 6 years with them. I attribute that to the fact that the Division was still building up after being reactivated and they needed the bodies. Fast forward to 2008 and I'm now in the Air Force and I get deployed to AFGN for a year to fill a specialty slot attached to the 101 ABN. All my previous AF deployments were all attributable to the fact that I spoke Army and the AF knew it, and I am sure that is how I ended up working for the 101st.
How to join the 82nd: Sign up for the Ranger option at enlistment and fail at RASP and bam instant 82nd 😆
They changed it, you must go through rasp and sere to go onto Airborne.
@@sethheaddress2651 SERE?
@@sethheaddress2651 I call BS there's no way you need to go to SERE to go to an airborne unit after jump school if you're a rasp failire

I ran out of things to ask about, you've brought everything to videos. I've seen most of your stuff😂

The 101st hasn’t been airborne since like the 70’s...
Mike Airborne do you still have to go to airborne school?
Which is used a hell of lot more than airborne has ever been
Even earlier, my father was there in the late 60s and never received any paratrooper training
the only reason they're still airborne is that the last member is still alive.
If you go to the 101st, Air assault is pretty much mandatory
I grew up on Ft. Bragg, I miss it, I love going to Southern Pines just a couple miles away, and I always wanted to go 82nd, so this was super insightful!!
Thanks for all the informative videos Matt! You've helped me get through the rigorous process of enlisting in the US Army

I just want to say thank you for your videos. I just recently went to meps and passed on my first try. Your tips helped me to join the army and i wanted to say thankyou for your videos and your tips.
I was an unassigned Airborne Radio Operator (05B) in the early to mid 80s. My orders read upon graduating jump school, I would be assigned the the 75th Regimental HQ.
dmoose64 DAMN LUCKY!
Sad Potato
Not so lucky as soon as I got there, I was placed on administrative hold. The orders were wrong and I waited for 28 days for the Army to figure it out. I ended up going to Fort Devens, MA for a year and then to Germany.
101st Airborne is no longer airborne 4:50. It’s a little confusing, but the title is there strictly for historical significance at this point.
If you want to be part of them your best shot is to request fort Campbell. Once you’re at Campbell you’ll also most likely do air assault while your in-processing; if you don’t already have wings.
Im here at campbell and you actually do air assault once you get to your respective unit
It's air assault now innit it
Thanks this i super helpful
join the guard and go anywhere and do anything ... national guard spec ops units or army reserve airborne units ... best way to go these days
@@sidneyloggins2487 how does it differ from active duty
The center of the universe is pretty cool and all, I'm happy to be here for sure...just thankful to be home in NC. I knew fayetteville was rough going in.
When I went in, in 2005, they were ramping up the numbers. You could select a specific in demand location and mos, while receiving $400 monthly bonus on top of your regular bonus. I was offered Hawaii, Korea, Germany, Hood, Lewis, Riley, Carson, and Bliss as an infantryman. I picked Germany, served with the 1-26IN 1ID till we reflagged to 2-28IN 172nd Infantry Brigade.
I was in basic with a guy who had Riley guaranteed, close to home for him. He fell for the old guard pitch and changed his contract. He was medically evaluated and come to find out he had an old guard disqualifying knee surgery. They tore up the old guard contract, sent him to Korea, no $400 monthly bonus.
I didn’t ask to be apart of the 82nd. It was just given to me out of luck. I kinda wanted Fort Drum or 2CR in Germany.
Are you airborne
Can you get airborne in your contract no matter your MOS
Yes you can. Tell your recruiter.
Wtf you're the only person I have ever heard of WANTING fort drum. My DS in basic told us the day we were leaving that he hated fort drum
@@theredgriffin6554 not every MOS can get that airborne contract. I'm a 15U and we cant get that contract buuuut we can go to jump school with the blessing of our leadership
After my time in the Reserves I joined the regular Army, changed my MOS to a 31M and they gave me the 101st Airborne Div. I did not ask for it, but I did enjoy it.

Hey Matt hope your having a good day I always find your videos super helpful
Your content has been extremely valuable. Thank you very much, I ship out today.
Good luck!
Nice video man, as a former Airborne 13F i can agree his information is very accurate.
Happy Tuesday Matt!
Thanks!
In the 90's the Army had cohort contracts. During my OSUT at Fort Benning half us were contracted to the 25th ID (Light) & the other half belonged to 10th Mountain.
When I got assigned to Hood I wanted 1st Cavalry so what I did was contact 1st Cav G-1 and told him that I really wanted 1st Cav. Since I was FA I knew that I was going to Division Artillery, either 1st Cav or 4th ID, so I also called the S-1 at at 1st Cav Divarty. They both contacted G-1 at III Corps and told him that they wanted me, and several weeks later I was notified that I had been assigned to the 1st Cav.
If you spend a full career in military service, your reputation and performance proceeds you. The way to be assigned to specific units of choice is directly TWO THINGS. Networking with contacts and become intimately familiar with the support personnel at Human Resources Command. Your branch manager combined with connections can get you REQUESTED by ANY UNIT. If these concepts or terms are foreign to an individual, research is required.
Not so much anymore with ASK-EM
If you are bold enough, there mays still be a loophole to get to specific non-elite units. (Note: The guy who did this had a legitimate Silver Star and Purple Heart so I refuse to pass judgment on his motivations or ethics.) He was returning to the Army after a long stint as a civilian. Wanted Ft. Lewis, 9th ID (which tells you this was long ago). Recruiter said it was not available. So, he signed up for a ranger assignment, got to Lewis, and when asked the mandatory "does anyone not want to be here?" question at RIP, he raised his hand. Reassigned to 9th ID. He went rapidly up the ranks from that point. Been a long time, they may have found a way to close that loophole.
I'd believe it, but why in the hell would he not want to be at the same duty station but in the Rangers?
SECOND
I've never been this early.
Happy Tuesday Matt!
(There's usually a guy who says something like that :)
Haha Thanks! Yeah there is 😄
Keep up the good work. I have two active duty sons. 11B and 13A
Things have changed in the past 34 years. I choose Infantry, Airborne and the 82nd as my first duty assignment.
At Airborne School, certain MOSs were asked if they would like to go to RIP. I don’t know when it changed from RIP to I think RASP.
SF would monthly post what they were look for. The minimum was E-4 and that was rare. Normally it was E-4 promotable or higher. If selected, you went to Q-Course and then to your school. Delta would recruit from E-5s and above. All of it was fairly hush, hush, but even if you passed their qualification testing it didn’t mean that they were accepting you.
Always enjoyed the few opportunities I got, to watch Delta train. Those dudes are beast!!
I love the fact you have a V Corps LRS patch, it needs an Airborne tab over it though. Its the one with the fleur-de-lis and the lightning bolts
Extremely rare patch
I PCS'd from 2 Infantry in Korea to the 101st for the last year of my enlistment. Originally, I had hoped to go to 10th Mtn at Ft. Drum because I was from NY but the Army had other plans. I thought we lived in the field in Korea......I was wrong. At Campbell we would go to the field for almost a month at a time, vs. Korea where we go out for one to two weeks, come back for a while, and go back out during training cycles. Strangely, at Campbell in the 1/187th Infantry, they would come in from the field for weekends. It seemed cool at first, but it was a bigger pain in the ass than just staying out there.
Hello Mr. Ward,
I’ve been watching your videos for over a year now and I can say that they have helped me a lot. I now have knowledge about the US Army that I need and that is all thanks to you!
P.S. Would you happen to have any information about 12Y or 35G? I have a BA in Geography (GIS) and I’ve been to a recruiter but he just brushed me off because I didn’t want to go Infantry.
My advice is to chat with a different recruiter. There may not always be 12Y or 35G openings, but there's certainly as hell always openings for MOS's other than 11X if it isn't the job you want
Mystic Thunder yeah I spoke with another and she said there are openings for those two mos but since I’m not ready to sign she didn’t want to waste her time (I totally understand). I want to get an mos that I can apply my schooling towards and the closest mos are 12Y and 35G. Besides artillery those 2 mos are the only ones that I would like. I’m also thinking about trying OCS and going MI or Artillery.
I don't know what the procedure is now, but in 1973 I waked into a recruiting office and said I want to go to the 82nd...... 6 months later I was sitting in the 82nd repl company (11B and airborne qualified) and within a week transferred to CoA 1/505 82nd abn. No problem
This is funny! I was on the Army's Delayed Entry Program, back in the summer of 1979. Had to finish up my Senior year of high school, first. But my contract was for Infantry training, Ft. Benning,, Georgia. First Duty station 2nd Infantry Division, South Korea! My recruiters told me how NOT many people asked for something like that, and, we're just too happy to give it to me! LOL!
Meeting with a recruiter in a few minutes thank you for all the informative content to put out so they dont bully me in there with words I dont know
Haha just ask questions and when you don't understand just ask. If it doesn't make since write it down and do some research when you get home.
Kanoa Mullen dude don’t stress it man people in the army are there for work 😂 to us bro it’s our work it’s not a life style relax and just ask questions. They’re recruiting you.
if you get an option 19 on your contract, you can choose which base your stationed at, then based on your mos and whether you went to airborne school, rasp, or special forces, depicts what unit you will reside in within that station
You can also do a 4187/368 transfer move but, that is hard because your current unit would have to support the move and you would have to be in the unit at a minimum of 15mths. Also, have good PT and no disciplinary actions. Also, your contract has to be 3yrs or you would have to extend if your on a two year contract. To be honest if your on a two yr contract and you have did 15mths out of that that’s pretty much re-enlightenment.
We got all the slots when I was at 10th Mountain. Yes being cold sucks ass but “ranger school, airborne, air assault, special ops whatever most of our guys had an opportunity to go in many directions!
Is this still the case at Fort Drum
Shipping out on April 14th. Reserves after boot camp. I joined a little older than normal but I’m 30. Planning on trying to transfer to active duty
Yes, you can enlist for Rangers, etc. Go Airborne at a minimum. Bring a lot of heart to the table. If they tell you to bring a lot of grit to training, change the grit to a ton of gravel. The training s harder than you may expect.
I’m going to MEPS March 1st. So pumped for MEPS and going for Airborne.✌️🇺🇸💪
How did it go
3rd to the left of 1st cav is my old unit. 143rd twisted sisters! Lol.
I signed up in 2004 with the 101st in my contract and did basic in ft Benning. And AIT I did in ft. Campbell .
Can you do “How to join Infantry”?
The arguments in this thread is exactly why I’m asking.
Ronald Vargas go to your army station and tell em you want 11x
Go to the recruiter tell them you want to be an 11b nothing else... that's it
Navy_Savage 11B dude
Mr.Snuggle Wuggles no! You go in a 11X not 11B because they decide if you are 11B or 11C but try again I’m in the military I’d know
Navy_Savage woah calm down guy I’m also in the military first off what’s your MOS? And do know the difference between 11x and 11B/C
You kinda can you have to go to your AKO or JKO some military website and find out if that unit a has an opening and if you have a spouse in the military you could transfer
I just want in on the 82nd.
God I love the Paratroopers.
me to i want to be 82nd airborne i am going to be one when i grow up i love them to
I actually enlisted as a 11x 3 days ago with Airborne, so i most likely will be 82nd lol
I’m 82nd Vet. What I did was I Volunteered out of my AIT. They will ask who wants to go airborne at the beginning and at the end. My 82nd Airborne brothers have a tradition of taking volunteers. Can you talk about the officer side for getting your unit and submitting a packet for SFAS?
my dad was in the 82nd airborne he went to Panama, desert storm and desert shield
There is no secret to selecting your first unit. Contact HRC while In AIT/OSUT and tell them you have a preference. Your instructors can guide you through it. Chances are anywhere you want to go will take you, especially if you like the history and prestige of their unit.
If you are in ait and want air assault, put ft Campbell on top of your wish list of duty stations, if you get ft Campbell you will go to air assault school pretty much guaranteed
good stuff! i was reserves for 6 years but it wasn't for me. I went active and got fort bragg and got placed in the 82nd with 1st brigade
If someone straight out of high school wanted to be in the 75th RGT, would it be wiser to obtain an Option 40 contract and go straight to RASP with no experience, or go into an Airborne or other infantry MOS first to build experience and then attempt to apply? I understand SF and "regular" army is a very different lifestyle, just curious what you guys think.
Go airborne infantry don't do option 40 in your contact best most people fell.If you go airborne infantry you will most likely go to a airborne unit that has SF and RASP failures who can help you along with your unit that will train you up RASP.
If you really want it, go for it. But o think you have some assessment in basic to determine if you can even be there.
I am a bit late but go with an option 4 contract. That way you do basic, then AIT, then Airborne school. You can volunteer for RASP at AIT and Airborne.
@@Jacob-oq3uv I ended up going regular 11b

Hey Sir, I was just gonna get your opinion on commissioning thru ROTC, right now I'm planning on going to a Military Jr. College. But I've heard they have downsides but then I'd like to commission earlier than having to go thru a 4 year institution. Thoughts? (Enlisted PFC Currently)
Right I think something you missed though is that if your re-enlisting then this can be easier. You still very much have to see what slots are available so it’s still not a guarantee but if they have open availability for your rank and you’re at the end of your contract then there is nothing keeping you in your current unit.

Shipping out in 19 days Fort Leonard Wood 🇺🇸
Have you ever done the Murph before. I'm considering doing it this year. Any tips for completing it
Let me get this straight.. going reserve first better enables a the scenario of planning and getting the choices, where as active duty pretty much whisks you away with less fluidity?
What I mean is that if a person wants to go active duty, but with more fluidity, then their best bet would be to go reserve and then volunteer into active duty 'ranger', 'SF', etc. ?
Does going reserve keep you more bound to being reserve for a full contract reserve? Compared to an active duty contract which keeps you locked in?
Is there a way to go through OCS and then join Airborne Infantry as an officer? Is Airborne Infantry a high demand unit?
I just finished BCT and am at Fort Leonard Wood for 12N AIT
Can you do a video on how to become a green beret and the process on how to become one ? Cause going to enlist soon and i want to go strate for the green berets 🙏

A buddy of mine didn’t have an airborne contract & he got assigned to the 82nd... it does happen.
He’s an officer tho so that might be different

How is it going
Matt, can you refer me to the video you made concerning obtaining a specific MOS, in that an enlistee is told that there are no openings and you state that delaying entry (active duty?) until an opening is available, is a possible action to take?
Hey Matt,
if you're a reservist and happen to go to school and do rotc in the middle of your reserve contract, say you graduate and commission during your 4th year of your contract, does your contract reset once you commission?
Hey Matt, so I was wondering if you had a video about what goes on in the dining facility. I heard from a friend about how he had to hold his tray a certain way. And one guy held it how he wasn’t supposed to so they all held their trays above their heads. Thanks for your time
Never heard of that, sorry.
If you get Airborne in your contract and pass you are very likely to go to the 82nd even if you are not in a combat MOS. There are never 100% guarantee on anything military.
I always think you are packing dip when I hear you talk lol good video.
Question I have is what is life at basic since my dad is a retired Officer of 25 years in the US Army? I have heard many thing It could be great or it could be difficult, Depending on the drill Sergeants.
Hey Matt, they just added the 101st, the 82nd, and the 173rd as guaranteed first duty stations. Did you see?
How soon can you join ROTC if you are bearly getting out of AIT as a Army Reservist? And will your ASVAB affect your chances for SMP program?
Most of the time if you are squared away, have a good line score (in the 140’s) and nearly maxed pt you will be approached, sf recruiter went to my unit and emailed me.
My great grandfather served in the 509th PIR in North Africa, the 505th RCT - 82nd Airborne in Sicily, and the 101st in Normandy, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. Since the day I find out he served in the 509th, I changed from wanting to join the 82nd to the 509th. The 3-509 serves with the 2nd brigade combat team, 11th Airborne Division. The 1st battalion is in Ft. Polk, LA as a training unit. I want to join the 3rd battalion so I can be in the 11th Airborne in JBER in Anchorage, AK near family. How do I get into that battalion of the 509th? Do I just hope for the best or put in a request with a recruiter? What do I need to do?
On one more note. Pre train and talk to army special forces recruiters prior. And start training hard to their advise to become. Physically fit. All can try out your success rate is how hard you ore trained even before them giving you an assessment date. The assessment is you go there having trained hard. So you can pass. Its not go to selection to train. And you will pass. Ask for mentors and advice on how to train
Some of these units are confusing. For example, the 10th mountain division is infantry that is mountain centric, however, the big red one also could fight in mountains, and the 10th could fight in cities.. so what’s the difference?
Same with airborne, the 82nd patrol around in humvees like all other grunts, at least the last two wars.
Bottom line they’re all similar if not the same. The only difference is with the ranger and onwards.
Its about heart
Having heart will help the most
What about the 10th mountain ? How could I increase my chances ?
Want to go to a mountain unit... Ask to go to Polk. Lovely place.
I plan on joining the 75th ranger regiment
Hey man, great video! I got an 11x option 4 contract and I leave in a few weeks. But I was just curious, after basic and airborne, what are the chances I get to join the 173rd in Italy? If it's not that high, is there anything I can do to increase my chances? Thank you! Hope you're healthy and doing great man.
Signing my contract today! How can we guarantee an airborne unit? Or are we infantry?
tripple-d 2146972 To be completely honest, I'm not sure how to guarantee an airborne unit but I'd recommend getting an Option 4 contract! That's what I got and the way my recruiter described it, it basically guarantees me a spot into airborne school. Then after airborne school we'll be placed into an airborne unit.
@@philiptroy5 signed my contract today, just got home from meps and yea I had an option 4 on it but it's basically still infantry with airborne wings. Which is better than the regular infantry

Update picking your first duty station is now an option along with picking you most. It's called option 19 guaranteed first duty of choice contact your local Active Duty recruited Germany and Hawaii has been added to this option as well
*MOS
Did not happen back in 1971. I enlisted in an ASA unit only to find out later they were attached to the 82nd. Surprise! But proud of my choice.
Pick your duty station to pick your unit
You can get airborne + jump ready status+ duty station (you want 82nd pick Bragg) all in your contract. 82nd needs all sorts of MOS's so you can all that or tell them call me when you get that done. Also most Infantry and cav units have recon platoons or long or a long range surveillance detachment that is on jump ready status so you could abn and get into lots of different units if you get your duty specified in the contract...you could be potentially be in 101st on jump ready with a maroon beret
I just happen to get 101st, just finished JRTC also
Option 18 is only currently for prior service applicants that are reenlisting and keeping their previous MOS.
The Regulations say it’s for all prior and non-prior 🤷🏼♂️
@@MattWard89 correct, however regulations don't get updated very often, so USAREC puts out USAREC messages, and OPS FLASHES more often than updating a regulation. You are technically correct, but current policy restricts Option 18 to prior service only at this time.
What's crazy is that I was a mechanic my whole career and been to 3 of the 4 in the image. 10th mountain first then 101 where I deployed twice and my 5th and last was 82nd
So if I go in as a 15T I could get airborne or air assault ?
You don’t get to select where you want to go, the army will put you where they need you, plain and simple.
How would officer's..12A switch to 75th Ranger Regiment? Is this something the recruiter should know or wait until you get to your unit?
J R I think you got to wait until your contract is up
I see your videos interesting good job
I was with the 82 n 101st, n 2nd Id.
