You didn’t talk about 19D (CAV scouts), but for all you thinking about enlisting as CAV scouts, yes that is a direct/indirect combat MOS. I know CAV scouts who were at one point kicking down doors in Iraq and doing similar missions as infantry guys. Cav scouts and infantry both hate to say it but scouts are very similar to infantry, they just focus primarily on reconnaissance, but combat is definitely something to think about when deciding if you want to be a scout.
Good luck man, hope you enjoy learning some new things. Take as many notes as possible and go over them on your free time. It might suck to you but trust me once you get to your unit you’ll be amazed about how much more relaxed things are. Good luck man
For any 68W (Combat Medic Specialist, it depends on your duty position, it's a toss up, you are either gonna be embedded in a line unit, working in a forward aid station, or even in the rear working in a hospital, most other 68 series and medical will not see front line combat but depends on duty location
Thank you so much for this video. A lot of helpful info. Was very happy once you mentioned you're a Signal Officer. Currently in AIT training as a 25U, so this video gives me a good idea of what to look forward too.
Matt... My son and I watched a ton of your videos before he enlisted and before he shipped - the most helpful info for new soldiers on RUclips by far. Thanks! He's a 19 D Cavalry Scout and had just arrived at his duty station before everything locked down. Question... Why do the Infantry guys hate the Scouts so much? His temporary room mate was a 11 B and couldn't stop talking crap about his MOS. I get some of the rivalry stuff, but this guy was over the top. Is this normal within the Army?
It's normal but I'm sure some privates go over the top... Kinda annoys me. Also, Cav Scouts have a motto, "If you ain't Cav you ain't sh*t". So, it goes both ways. Just remind him to not let it get to him. Infantry always has a big head. It's drilled into them during training.
Everything Matt said is true. I’m a CAV scout and the scouts and infantry guys take the whole rivalry thing to heart...I’m one of the few scouts who don’t care for the rivalry and name calling thing and once both sides see that in someone they eventually just leave you alone with that Bs. It’s not personal, it’s just guys being idiots, your boy will be just fine
Thank you for this video. I enlisted in the Army back in January as a 91B (Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic) and I was curious as to what to expect. I ship out to Fort Jackson for Basic Training on July 14th so I’ve been watching a lot of videos to mentally prepare myself.
Correction Matt, Adjutant General's Corps is mostly clerical. They send soldiers for training, TDYs, write promotions, plan military exercises, etc. JAG Corps are lawyers and stuff.
An easier way to view the military is use the term "branches" in a more literal way, the army for instance. Instead of just a branch, think of it as a tree, a tree has dozens of roots that ultimately serve to bolster and feed the tree. Each root has it's own responsibility when it comes to holding up the tree and nourishing it. :)
The term "branch" is already used to distinguish between the different "Branches" of the US military such as army, navy, marines, air force. Recommending the use of that term, "branch" for any other reason is just confusing the uninitiated.
I’ve been think about either going into the army or being a pipefitter, I know so different, I’m about to be a jr I’m high school, so I feel like thinking and pondering on it now wouldn’t hurt, I don’t care about being rich, I just want to serve the country I love and be able to have a job I can take pride in and tell stories about when I’m older
Great overview and emphasis. I would add that the unit you’re assigned to while deployed will determine your exposure to risk. I’ve also seen cooks turned into resupply and travel with personnel clerks all over Iraq to experience the abnormal on a routine basis. OIF I & II.
Can you make a dedicated video to the 75th Ranger Regiment? How to get in, what they do, maybe a little history, what’s going on now. Not a lot of people know about it and you have a good platform to spread the information, I’m in pre rasp right now.
How to get in? Be in GREAT physical shape, able to retain information you learn, decent shot, finish basic training in a combat MOS that isn’t 19D (or a support MOS), complete ranger school and hope you get placed in the 75th. What they do? Your typical special forces bang bang missions you kids see in the movies and video games. What the movies don’t show is that rangers actually specialize in training other countries militaries. That’s what most rangers do, training other people.
@@Twizzzums Just had a 3 buddies out of 2 companies pass RASP. Have you met the man yet? Lmao. You know who I'm referring to. "Medium fade to skin men". "Task conditions and standards".
I hear many people say don't go infantry... wouldn't infantry help you to stay more alert on deployments, help you to defend yourself better, more commradie (sp), helps you to stay in better shape, and better prepared you for law enforcement, fireman, construction work, etc.,etc....
I'm an 88M and I was in Distribution Platoon in an FSC and most of my platoon got CABs as the Taliban was shooting rockets at us every few days. So it all just depends on where you get placed in the fight. I will say it isn't as scary as you would think and I wouldn't trade those months for the world.
Im 27 years old in the process of enlisting and I'm debating on going 14 series or chaplain assistant... Two completely different mos with different responsibilities. Sure to give me two completely different experiences. ADA looks very interesting and fun but I also wanna help those struggling with faith because I know how powerful and motivational faith can be. I'm meeting with my recruiter tomorrow to drop off some of my information and I think I'll have to ask more in depth questions. At this point in my life I dont think i can afford settling for any mos.
If you get bored with one MOS, you can re-enlist for something later as long as you don't make E6...pretty tough after that unless you go Special Forces or something like that.
Sweet I chose 25b as well. Working on getting my bachelors to try for OCS when I'm done. I really want to deploy and go so imma fill out a DA-160R form when I'm back from basic and see where that takes me.
Chris S it was great. I was a little nervous going into it but it ended up being nothing to be nervous about. I got a lot of information, went over the job list, and scheduled my asvab for this Thursday.

63H20 (H8 Recovery) I went to Iraq twice. OIF 2 with the 1st Cav. I was direct support for Armor and ran missions with the poor dismounted cav. M1A2 were not very effective in Bagdad city streets. Seen plenty of combat as a mechanic. Second deployment i was with Direct support for 161 infintry WA national guard. OIF 5 I believe. The war was a defernt animal by that time. Much more mellow. Went on plenty of missions with the Grunts as it was better to repair a vehicle then to tow it 100s of miles. Didn't see much action but there was some. Just because you think you picked a reasonably safe MOS doesn't mean anything. Take all your training in regards to combat very seriously. The grunts made all of us support guys do every thing they needed to do, plus what we needed to do also. I told my company commander that if they needed us mechanic's to clear a house and kick in doors then we're truly F'ed. He just said if we ever got F'ed then kicking down doors and holding up could save your B'ts. Seriously don't ever think that you won't see combat regardless of MOS. Oh and I say that Ordinance Corp is direct support.
I'm a 91M Bradley Systems Maintainer, and I was told pretty much all through ait that since I'm ordinance and attached to 1st cav that I'd def get deployed and seeing combat is a real possibility
I had an uncle who served 8 years in the marines and saw combat. His younger brother, joined the marines a little after him and had the same MOS but didn’t see combat. Idk what to say about that.
I was 38A Civil Affairs in Iraq. One minute you’re handing out blankets and around the corner you’re breaking down doors. It all depends on the situation. Sometimes you’re the first unit of contact, which means you lead the fight even before, during and after 11Bs arrive.

In Iraq there were Culinary Specialists that were killed in combat due to an ambush. Same with supply personnel. There's a mountain in Phoenix named after the one woman that was killed. At the end of the day anyone could see combat. It's just the combat arms positions have a higher chance of doing so. But then again, I know some guys that did 8 years as 11b and they never saw combat. To each their own. My advice would be to pick something that translates to the outside world, especially if it involves computers; Army cyber would be a good transition for some folks
I first talked to my recruiter today and she recommended me to stay in open contract since i am a green card holder until i become a citizen. Should i follow her advice?
I would say no if youre planning to get citizenship because they could give you a jon that youd dislike. I have the same situation but my timing and asvab scores were good enough to get 68 series mos. Apparently theres an open contract specific category option with whuch you can choose departments ex. Be sure to get the MOS you want and even if you go to meps and they don’t have the job you want, you can say no and go back when the job you want it’s open but they don’t tell you that. Hey Matt? Have you done a video on what the process is for becoming an officer via the OCS route? I am interested in becoming an officer in the Army after I graduate college in August and haven’t seen a bunch of information on what the process is. Thanks!
There are MOS's that don't see combat? In the war I went to, a SCUD missile exploded and caused something like 80 casualties and none of them were combat arms.
25N here in expeditionary signal company. Has there ever been a finance person in combat? Only MOS besides paralegal I can think of not seeing combat or why would they be there.
Probably. Finance will go out on Paydays and make any adjustments to pay. A PAC Clerk can do it but it sometimes gets effed up. My Brigade Commander wanted the Troop's pay done right. It depends on the Command on how they want Finance Issues "Squared Away".
Got deployed for OIF 07-08 and our original mission and MTOE was scrubbed as the facility we were going to support was not even built yet. Ended up doing just about anything they could throw at us. First 2 squads in the platoon were MPs. 3rd Squad was a support element of supply, admin and cooks. So for a lot of our gun trucks the gunners or driver were a mix of that supporting squad. So I had a 50 gunner that was a 42A.
I recently signed a contract for 11x but didnt get option 4 or 40 bc they just weren't available and I honestly didn't want to wait to swear in as dumb as that sounds. Kind of regretting not signing a 25B bc it came with an option 40 gurantee. How hard is it to get a shot at rasp without it in your contract as an 11B? Anyone know?
It's not hard. I had an op4, but not 40 on my 11x contract. Fact of the matter is, poachers come to each graduation. They look for PT scores that qualify for rasp or airborne. The reality is, if you have an op 4, op 40, or both in your contract, you're actually more fucked than if you dont, because if you fail either school, your bonus is forfeit, and they just place you 11x anyway. if you take 11x normal, but excel at bct, you've still got the chance to go op 4/40 upon graduation. You just need to be the best. AND you're still guaranteed your sign on bonus even if you don't qualify, and/or you don't take the op4/40 positions. Much better to NOT have op4/40 on contract.
Hi Matt, really love your videos they’ve been helping me out a lot. I’m planning to enlist in special forces as soon as I can. I was just wondering at basic training can I wear a ankle brace or tape my own ankles quickly in the morning? Thanks Matt! Keep up the great content!
At basic you dont have anytime in the morning. You have approximately 5 minutes to make your bed, shave and change into OCP uniform and toe the line. To answer your question, no.
Also, field artillery can be used as “CAV Scouts” very quickly if your sent to a CAV Regiment then deploy to Iraq in 03. Tankers will be on foot patrol so fast too! Anything goes under combat arms no matter your specific mos. It happened and also stop loss. Don’t think these long shot things will not happen. They can and will!
I was a 14R Bradley Linebacker Crew Member. I was with 1-4 ADA 1st Armored Division. We never had the linebacker just m2 Brads with stinger dismount teams. We deployed to Iraq in 2003. We received on the job infantry training as a unit in Kuwait. Because there was zero air threat in Iraq they basically used our whole battalion as a mechanized infantry battalion. Most of us earned combat action badges in the process. There are two types of ADA. HIMAD units which fire patriots. In my day women could enlist in these jobs. Secondly SHORAD which is line of sight ADA. We had all male line units. In a total war scenario every Infantry, Armor and Cav battalion get an assigned Shorad Platoon. As a Shorad soldier you go where ever the fighting is. If there isn’t an air threat you simply take on an infantry or Cav role.
All MOSs can see combat if attacked, run over an IED or receive mortar rounds. Some MOSs are more likely. That’s why are all soldiers receive imminent danger pay in a combat zone.
Do they drug test you periodically? Or at all? Because of weed and is it still a problem if i have a prescription? Because my therapist said he wanted to prescribe it
If you happen to be in training status and leave for holiday block leave (Christmas) they’ll do a urinalysis when you get back. If whatever your going through warrants your therapist to want to prescribe you weed really question yourself if your ready for the military. Being depressed or suicidal doesn’t do anything but make the situation much worse for you and your battle buddies.
only Rangers and SF see combat as of right now maybe you get lucky and get a airborne contract or go light infantry but mechanized and striker units good luck most you'll see is NTC or a rotation to Korea, Kuwait, it basically boils down to where the army need you too

Don’t be nervous, if you like to learn new things and enjoy a challenge you’ll love it...if you don’t get stuck in a platoon full of idiots lol. Just remember to take as many notes as possible and to study those notes regularly. As a 68W you’ll have a good amount of info to retain, it’ll seem intimidating but the medics in my unit Say it only seems that way and that it’s not as hard as it seems the more you learn. Best of luck to you, have fun!
Good video sir! Quick question, what do you recommend for a reservist POG like me (I'm in a combat support MOS) to get more tactical training? Matt Ward Sadly I don’t have internet right now so I can only use my phone that has data. And I have 0 extra securities. Just wondering can you get onto it on your iPhone?
What do you know about 91H - Track Vehicle Repairer? Any information at all (hours, chances of deployment, day to day, are they stationed overseas, etc.).
Tracked Vehicle Repairers do everything Wheeled Vehicle Mechanics do. They may be specifically trained to repair tracked vehicles, but just like any Field MOS, they may be asked to work on wheeled vehicles if there is a shortage of such. Keep that in the back of your head..you will hear that again. Hours depends on whether you are forward deployed or in some kind of facility doing Depot Level Maintenance. There are Tracks Overseas. If a Unit goes to Kuwait without Vehicles, it's because there are Pre-Deployed vehicles there.....you will work long hours getting them ready. BTW, I'm not a Tracked Vehicle Repaired, but everything I have written, I have seen with my own eyeballs. Good luck and I hope this helps you.

This grunt figured out the block shape test.
I chose 88M for that exact reason. Lots of driving jobs in the civilian world that love to hire military personal
@@coepierceall6318 see it translates well with certification. To many look at it as a short term job and few make the military a career so thinking big picture for yourself is crucial.

Heading to bootcamp tomorrow, but have to go to meps today first to make sure I don't have the coronavirus. Going as a 68W, your videos have really helped me.

YouReallyDontKnow thanks I’m leaving on August 30th Fort Benning 19D lest get it! 💪🏻

YO THATS MY MOS! I have with option 40 but how is it
Wow , this is such an informative video. The detailed answer the the question Ive had so much trouble getting an answer to. Thank you Matt
I leave as a 92f on September 5 to fort Jackson. See you there
Zaytin see you there.
How was it looking into this myself
How did it turn out?
I was a 14T Air Defense Artillery…nowadays a lot of wars are fought with missiles/rockets. Definitely deploys a lot
Bro what
The term "branch" is already used to distinguish between the different "Branches" of the US military such as army, navy, marines, air force.
OIF I & II.
💚💚💚 great video. I get this question all the time too. Its complicated 💚💚 thank for the informative content.

YouReallyDontKnow To join the 75th you need to pass RASP, Ranger School is a separate thing

You should go over military scenes in movies like American sniper or shooter
I'm going into the Army National Guard as a 56x Chaplain Candidate later this year. I cannot wait!
get good at shooting the M16 cause the Chaplin doesn't carry a weapon. You are his bodyguard
You might want to rethink that!
Sometimes you’re the first unit of contact, which means you lead the fight even before, during and after 11Bs arrive.
is a mortarman (11C) considered "safer" than 11B infantryman? I want to deploy in a combat zone but be within a less dangerous distance
Take it from someone who deployed to a combat zone. Your MOS is irrelevant. The mission comes first. An 11C will be with the 11B doing the same stuff.
I almost chose 68W but after further conversation with my recruiter I settled on 74D, leaving in 3 weeks for basic. My wife and I have gained a lot of knowledge and confidence from your videos, thanks Matt.
What made you switch? I'm interested in 68w. Was there any particular reason?
@@Tzippora100 it had nothing to do with the actual career itself and more to do with reserve unit location. And just a little to do with my wife worried about me being deployed potentially more often.

What about 91Bravo, I’ve heard they do see combat and sometimes don’t.
Xray tech another great MOS
Great topic.
So is their no combat to be had now as an 11b with no war in Iraq or Afghanistan?
Basically yea lol
Can you make a video about differences between combat and non combat deployments what are missions like whats pay like etc
Electronics.

Be sure to get the MOS you want and even if you go to meps and they don’t have the job you want, you can say no and go back when the job you want it’s open but they don’t tell you that. Getting your citizenship once you’re in the army it’s pretty easy and takes only like 4 months after AIT (at most) so be sure to do something you want since you’re gonna be doing it for a few years.
25B here
I'm going to BCT May 4th with a SF candidate contract. Originally I was suppose to ship march 24th but got delayed.
How did it go? Did you end up in 82nd?

Hey Matt, I go to bootcamp on August 24th for the Army. My mos I chose is 14t. Is there anything about 14t that you know of?
Ask some of these soldiers and marines from 04-06 if you want to see combat. Most of them wish they never have.

@@niyanagraves9179 It was not hard at all. I don't think it exists anymore, the Army changed it to something else.

Will combat engineers be in a lot of combat as infantry ?
Do they drug test you periodically? Or at all? Because of weed and is it still a problem if i have a prescription? Because my therapist said he wanted to prescribe it
Eduardo Brunckhorst weed is a no go, deny you ever smoked it in meps, no matter what, deny deny deny
You piss hot in your unit you'll get deducted pay extra duty and kicked out the Army. Any drug that's not prescribed is a no go, good luck
Weed is still illegal federally. So government employees can’t be doing it.

All Commands are in English. If they can't understand you, how do you think it will go?
As long as you can understand basic english you'll be okay. I believe they'll actually evaluate you prior to basic. I met some dudes who could hardly speak a damn lick. However, they got through because they could at least make it apparent what they meant , despite it being somewhat broken. Brush up on english and make sure you know heo to make orders aka indicative statements. Good luck!
