@@WhiteSwan1997 basically, i don't know if i'm trying not to push myself too hard, or if i'm being pathetic and weak. where is the line? at what point should you stop pushing yourself? this is my specific situation. i do karate, and i am afraid to spar tomorrow. every monday of every week i spend dreading our sparring session. on these days i wake up at 6 for online studies, then i'm out at college 10_30am-1pm, then spend from 4:30-7:30 teaching, then 7:30-8:15 is regular karate, then 8:15-9 is sparring. so i do get tired yes, but every week i fall into this same conflict: should i stay for sparring, or should i let myself go home? if i make the prior intention to stay, then i spend the whole day dreading 4:30 and i feel like my monday becomes completely wasted. if i make it through i feel good about myself for sticking it out, but on days i do poorly like i lose really bad then i feel down on myself and become all sad. some days i make the intention to leave after normal karate but at 8:15 i think "well i'm already here, might as well," and i have a good time, but still, that prior dread resurfaces every week. i try to make up for not staying by training on my own, but i still feel like a loser if i skip sparring regardless of how intense i went. i guess i really don't know whether i'm adequate at all, i need someone else to judge this for me. i could ask my instructor because he's always been a good pal to me, but it's sunday evening and i'm already drowing in this dread.
@@theedinklepeepee From an outsider perspective, it doesn't really look like you love LOVE practicing karate as you should, for a busy study schedule, specifically (college is tough). I understand you don't want to feel like you're wasting your free time just doing nothing, but resting and relaxing, spending that time taking care of yourself, is not a waste. If you are already dreading, then your current schedule has to change. Not doing karate, and feeling that your day could be better without it, is NOT pathetic. You are a human and you have a lot on your plate right now, you are doing enough by studying. That's the priority. The options I can think of are: You can drop Karate, just for a while. You can call it a rest, and find some relaxing hobbies. Remembering that, YOUR time, is not a waste of time. You can drop Karate for good if is not making you happy. You are supposed to enjoy it, understanding that progress comes through time, and not feeling like a loser for having a bad class. There's plenty of things you can do at home, like reading, playing some video games. Literally if you are delivering at your classes, you have the right to do whatever you want after that. So.... Do you love Karate? or is just making you feel like you have something to prove? It's working against your self-esteem? Or is just the fact that your schedule is full for the moment and you just need a break from it? Probably you should focus on resting for tonight, and totally talk to your friend. Make sure you tell him the way karate is making you feel. Don't keep these preoccupations to yourself.
@@WhiteSwan1997 hey, i really appreciate the advice. that was very insightful... i'm not entirely sure if i DO like karate. i know i like the feeling of being completely exhausted and sore, but i've been ill in a sense for a while now and it's getting to the point where i just can't exert myself like that anymore. i mean i USED to be able to stay the whole day no problem, take class after work completely ok, but the thought of doing so now is just unbearable. i also do kickboxing, which i enjoy much more because i would say it's more consistent and sparring is a lot more fun full-contact. i was thinking about this yesterday, and i figured from here, i might atleast try to start going to kickboxing consistently, and create a routine for myself without over-pushing. and also thinking about it now, it might be a seasonal thing as well, this utter loss for energy. in the summer i was out biking and longboarding and jogging, but i can't bear the cold anymore. i might feel better once i'm able to have fun like i used to. i guess i do feel like karate is something i have to prove, especially since i teach it. you opened my mind. thank you!
