    A simpler cousin of the Tesla Coil, is the Slayer Exciter. It's an incredibly simple circuit, that makes thousands of volts, and can produce spectacular results. But this one, is a bit different! I couldn't find a flat, pancake style slayer anywhere - so this was my attempt at making one of the first on RUclips. I was blown away by the results. #PlasmaNation #TeslaCoil #Maker

      pancake coil nice and compact I love it now I need to build one with a 10;1000turn insulated that can handle 30-200kv 1.6kw input I need to get a replacement voltage booster for my zvs I sadly blew it out years ago be for i got into fusion. ill have to do spark gapped with my hv supply I have then see how my plasma chamber handles it. now x-ray glasses on, welding mask down, lead /aluminum positive charge shield up. battery charged, materials gathering, rebuilding capacitor's, coiling wire.......................................................ugh , installing prototype core Fxsit, vacuum system on, battery charged ,high voltage supply on, charge capacitors, prepping fuel intake, filtration system on, fuel system on, shield on, lights off, system is all green....3..2...1.....
      man I cant wait to see that beautiful fusion glow again but with more power ok I need to get back to winding this coil.. ugh I wont get to see full output till I get the voltage booster replaced.

      Nigel, I appreciate that. Yeah winding the secondary wasn’t TOO hard... use a thin washer in the middle of the two discs to space the secondary... and attach the wire to the bolt in the middle, then wind on a drill. First attempt though I broke the wire...

      Hi Ken, I appreciate your compliments. Nope, don’t work in advertising. I spent several years as a television actor though, so, always seeing how professional camera shots look... I now always strive to mimic professional quality with my own videos. My goal is to make me videos even more professional and entertaining in time.

      @@PlasmaChannel Everything is good enough as it is at the same time. All I would recommend: Try to make smaller gestures and reduce the intensity of acting. But I only estimate by 20%. It's just my feeling and just the opinion of one person. Nothing more.

      @@PlasmaChannel Thanks for agreeing. Classical theater requires greater gestures and expressive facial facial expression. But technical video, moreover, in high quality not. Because your face can be zoomed in as you need. This is not possible on the theater boards. All you need is a soft gentle face game. The same applies to hand and body language. You are similar man a like the Mentalist serial. You can try his type of actering.

    I'd just been looking at the drsstc pcb tesla but due to self isolation can't get out to make one. I'd never thought about just winding it like this rather than etching the coils on pcb. I salute you good sir!

      Creating a jig is usually the easiest way.

      Created a jig on a drill. Was very difficult and the first time my jig failed.....and 400 feet of wire unravelled and tangled. Second time came out great!

      @@PlasmaChannel try stacking multiple layers, that will also allow you to try multiple primaries (between the layers, wired in parallel)

      @@mykulpierce Current goes outward then inward, similar to a bifilar only shifted in the z axis, and he can also make another variant by flipping the second layer in the x or y axis, making the current wind in the same direction on every layer.

    I like how you showed the electric field. Pancake coils, I love them.
    Personally I always use bifilar pancake coils as they have a lower resonant frequency and can hold much more energy in its fields.

      @@PlasmaChannel Yes a bifilar coil can produce larger sparks, as the capacity of the coil is charged to a much higher voltage (more energy).
      you just need to be careful for sparkover between the windings, as the voltage difference between them is much higher.
      I don't generate sparks, as I see it as an entertaining waste of energy. instead I reuse the energy.

    these solid state coils are very cool! I've been perfecting my drsstc for the better part of a year and with a variable interrupter you can get some nice sounds and sparks. also with a bit of modifications like a mosfet driving ic you can replace the bjt with a n-channel fet that can much more power. electroboom has a great schematic in his video about the topic

    Very nice build! But I still think, that it isn't the most powerfull tesla coil that works on the slayer exiter principle. The driverless sstc works on the same principle but runs on mains voltage and is mutch more powerfull.
    Your build is still very nice and it looks great!

    I used to wind pancake coils for portable
    x ray units up to 300 kv . You can stack those coils to achieve higher voltage... You do nice work..

    I have found that adding a diode from the gate to drain (using a mosfet) with the cathode connected to the drain, greatly improves these circuits. At least with helical coils, might work with this one.

    I love this project. We just got hit with a 5.7 magnitude earth quake here in utah. And many houses and buildings have been damaged. And our economy had tanked almost completely. So the only highlight is watching educational videos like yours on RUclips.

      @@PlasmaChannel Thankyou so much. I am doing ok and so is my family. We are just struggling. And I'm afraid more struggles are to come in the following weeks. My dad works for Delta Airlines and Delta is laying off 10,000 workers. And my dad might be one of them. My mom is out of work and I am keeping my part time job that doesn't bring in much. I like the title already and I like the idea even more. I am just so grateful that there are people like you that can come up with these very interesting and project inspiring videos. (There aren't very many people like you) As I have been trying to earn money to buy a camera to record my own science videos since 2018. But it seem I shouldn't be spending money at this point and rather should be saving it. So that'll have to wait.

      the primary coil is on the outside of the secondary (circumference), and it is 4 turns.

    When the transistor is conducting the voltage at the secondary turns the transistor more on, not off. It just turns the transistor off half cycle of the oscillation later.

    I'd love to see how you made that pancake my friend. Do your transistors get hot? Either way great video and device :) I've never seen it done like that and I've built a few slayer exciter circuits myself. Very very cool 10/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

      Yes they do, and thank you very much for your compliments! The aluminum heat sink keeps them cool enough for about 20 seconds of operation.

    Any advice for a beginner getting into high voltage electronics? I know a bit, but I’ve never built anything over 60 volts. I really want to build an SSTC, but I’m not really sure how to start or if that’s even a good idea. I love your channel btw, and it’s what got me into high voltage electronics.

      Hi Hercules. Glad you enjoy my videos. If you're not super familiar with higher voltages, I recommend only build totally safe things first. That would be a Van Der Graaff generator. Super easy, makes really high voltages. I have a video on making a Van der Graff. I also have two videos on making mini handheld tesla coils that are totally safe. Check them out!
      I'd stray away from a solid state coil for a while...they are very complex.

    Is tip32c is a good replacement for the transistor you used and did you blew up any transistor

      The tip32C is okay, but I found it gets hotter and dies quicker.

      All the bifiliar coils i've seen are operated at really low voltages, so i'm not sure how well they'd handle higher voltages.

      @@PlasmaChannel I think it will fair well. Tesla designed it for this purpose (in some pictures of lab you see large versions) but this of course depends on the dielectric strength of insulation of the wires and air spacing.

    Reminds me of the PCB tesla coils using GaN transistors from hackaday, those have to operate at many MHz so really super fast power transistors were required!

      Power max - it was you that inspired me to use the MJE3055T! So glad you commented. I tried a few others, and did a lot of research, but when i saw you had good results, i went ahead using the MJE3055T. Cheers, Mate

      @@PlasmaChannel I need to continue development of my PLL musical singling coil, I like the compact nature of your pancake coil, I hate the large volume a normal tesla coil uses. Did you fill the coil with resin to prevent arcover?

    You should use a small brass pyramids on top I think it'd be interesting to see considering that when you put the multiple LEDs in the path of the field they lit up in a cone shape

    I have a question: why do people always power it straight from a 9v battery and other low volt sources? why not have a first stage circuit bump it up to 600v, rectify it, put a capacitor to flatten it, and use that as the input to the slayer exciter? the arcs should be so much bigger right? or am I missing smth?

    3:00 yes it would make an electric field, but concept behind that is the primary coil making an electromagnetic field that that would induce a current into the secondary based on lenzs law

    Firstly, nice build, however a few things stood out, firstly how come there are two to-220 transistors on the board at 2:20 . are they paralleled up or are you using a fancier push pull driver? Where can I find a schematic of your build? Also what resonance freuqency is it operating at and to what impedance did you design your primary/secondary coil? What current is drawn by the circuit, and what is the efficency? Surely that heatsink is not going to last in CW mode. Lastly "worlds most powerful is a bit of an overstatement but still a nice build :P!

      Hi Platinum, thanks for asking. So I stated in the video, while showing the two transistors, that they are wired in parallel to increase performance and increase longevity. As for the schematic - I also showed the exact schematic in the video. It is wired identical to the shown schematic.
      The heat sink gets hit after about 15 seconds. That’s good enough for me. As for the title... there is no other handheld rechargeable pancake slayer coil on the internet. Mine is the first 😋

      @@PlasmaChannel In that case I stand corrected about the first in the world :) ! I don't mean to come off as rude but i only saw the schematic at the 3:05ish minute mark, the critical values of the parts such as the winding ammount for the primary and secondary coils was sadly not shown, however the description did list the parts used. Also, as for the longevity and stability of the circuit I doubt there will be much gain in this aspect as the 3055 transistor can switch quite high currents, and in fact you may be doing more harm than good if only one biasing resistor is used as the dies can have various gain factors, which will negate the benefit of using two transistors and can lead to a catastrophic failiure from a thermal runaway effect especially on a small heatsink. As for the batteries its cool to have it portable granted, but that creates a difficulty with grounding leeding to smaller breakout. Lastly how exactly are the coils wound? is it a bifilar design or are the primary and secondary coils on other sides of the acrylic?

    Thomas Stanly Curtis wrote a book on High Frequency Apparatus back in 1920s. One of his projects was a pancake Tesla(Oudin) coil. His book is for free on Google books. Chapter VIII is the design of a pancake Oudin coil.
    Everything old is new again! Somewhere in there is how a kicking coil works. Kicking coils are used in vacuum/insulation checkers today. Electro -Technic products makes several of these. It's great that you are revisiting this technology with a modern twist!
    The flat coil is different, but didn't Tesla experiment with those too?

    That was very cool. I'm with you on the idea that it's not a true Tesla coil, more related to solid state Oudin coil. Interesting nonetheless. Also wondering if that's the same circuit as an arc lighter?

      Thanks for watching! It definitely is different than the circuit for the arc lighter though. The arc lighter uses a high voltage secondary which does not need to feed back into the primary to trigger it. It has totally isolated secondary windings.

    Interesting, I've heard that flat coils notoriously suffer from internal arcing. Mayhaps I heard wrong.

      Hi Dayton! Thanks a bunch. Yeah, what's interesting is the flat coil was particularly sensitive to turns ratio. I got these results using 4 turns on the primary. Bringing it down to 2 turns causes open breakout to occur, but the sparks are cold to the touch. No power behind them at all. And they cant be stretched out. Its amazing how much current the arcs carry using this design.

      An easy option to combat that would be to immerse the coils in oil or vacuum pot them in resin (second option not as easy but the vacuum is required to ensure the resin fully penetrates the gaps with no air gaps or air in the resin)

      @Heads Mess An understandable predicament. I guess I've just been lucky; I've used the same camera for years now. Its gotten up close and personal with explosions, thermite, high voltage, microwaves, etc. That camera is a trooper!
      P.S. I think we can *all* agree that high voltage looks much better in real life than on film :)

    A miniature version of this with the secondary wound around a fluorescent tube starter might make a fairly good UV source. Its not clear how effective this would be but only one way to find out!!
