I linked up with the Decay Devils (linked below), who are group of urban explorers on a mission to preserve abandoned buildings. Gary has lots of old architecture and I've always been fascinated with it-but I wanted to document the preservation process as well. This was really really cool Dima. Probably my favorite vlog of yours, as I've always dreamed of doing some urban exploring.. A las in NYC it's not so easy, at least I don't think it is without special permission like you got. BTW how did you get that sick moving time lapse of the artists?
+Here Be Barr thanks Jon really appreciate that!!! it took me ages to get around to doing one, and I still can't believe I almost didn't go to this event! So glad I did. I see a lot of abandoned buildings on RUclips that are located on Long Island (asylums and stuff like that), apparently they're quite easy to get into!
The artist's time lapse was done in Adobe Premiere Pro-zooming into the timelapse clip to about 120-130% and then key framing the rest to create a motion from one edge of the clip to the other. Ever since I learned how to do that I've loved the effect haha
The station was used in the movie "Original Gangstas" with Fred Williamson, Richard Roundtree and Jim Brown in 1996. A co worker's wife was hired as a driver for the production crew. When they wrapped up and went back to L.A., she went with them. He quit the job that day and went looking for her.

My grandfather use to work there when I was little I remember when I would go visit them He would wake up super early to go to work and if the streets were bad with the snow he would go walking to work.

yeah the Decay Devils do a lot of good work locally, they're quite active in the community! Its amazing
I am going to urban explore most of these locations when I visit Gary Indiana, in about 1 and a half months. I wanted to do so for like 7 years. Finally am going to go with my grandparents.
The drone footage is great- there was a long platform along the tracks... one for EastBound and one for Westbound. You can see where it was.
When we were kids we would skip school and hang out at Union... It was in a lot better shape back then... And just a heads-up get out of there before dark unless you're from Gi...u know what I'm saying

Great video! I don't know how many times I passed by this place traveling over the years either by car or train and wondered what the history was of this station was.

Gary officially allows urban exploration and the mayor says they want you to view ghosts of Gary’s industrial past. They want urban explorers for the tourism and revenue and they apparently check to make sure the buildings are safe.
So cool. Wanted to make this event. Love that building.

Those are definitely a couple of muflooded buildings that were originally built of the red brick, then covered/repurposed with the facade of concrete in 1910. Just like the methodist church in Gary. that place is older than we are led to believe.
I am going to go to Union station, palace theater, Methodist church, and the Gary post office. Spend at least an hour in each, film a full documentary about the history and my reactions in each. At least a 20 minute documentary. It will be fun.
Gary has seen a lot of change in the past few months, many abandoned structures were demolished to make room for newer constructions but hope you enjoy man!

Not abandoned in the 50's, Union station was in use until 1970's--. We took train from Union Station to Pittsburgh every year. Amtrak came in 1971 and passenger service stopped at Union soon after.

Yes, that incorrect date has been unfortunately used for many sites-Sad that there is no archive of when it closed. I have images of schedule from the 1970's. . The station used to deliver US mail, but that was ended and so went the station.

I know one thing for certain...........it was up for grabs in the summer of 1974. I lived in Gary then. The summer of '74 I was 19 years old, and I took cutting equipment in there and cut open a big floor safe that they had been beating on for a while trying to open it. Found tokens and junk paper. I cut metal railings and stuff up, in and around there, to sell for scrap at Marco's in East Chicago as well. I went back in the late '80s and removed probably 30,000 bricks from the south-edge driveway all the way up, around, and in back of the freight-house building in back. I sold them in Chicago for a huge amount of money. They were Townsend Block bricks from Zanesville Ohio. In '74 that place was really damaged, so I would say it was abandoned for a few years by then. In 1981 and '82 I took all the bricks out of the Virginia Street freighthouse as well. I took up so many, I had brick-crane trucks come out from Chicago to load 3000-pound banded pallets by the dozen!! Probably made over $40,000 over several months in the springtime of those 2 years. These bricks sold then for more than 50 cents each wholesale, and as much as $2.00 apiece in wealthy North suburbs like Northbrook and Glencoe to people laying fancy driveways!
@@junkdeal huh. That’s some story as broadway limited and others boarded there until 1976 or so . And the bricks ? with help from US steel we dug them all up on the south side 2 yrs ago . Then relaid them. Interesting about safe .. city of Gary wondered about that .. we - Decay Devils purchased it from them 3 yrs ago .
You should do another video of what it looks like today, I would wager that is has gone backwards
Actually, quite the opposite, Decay Devils are working with non-profits as we speak to help restore the building. They are doing more around the city of Gary as well!
I don't get it. They want to preserve historic buildings but there are pothole the size of toilet bowls and abandoned houses all over that city. I think people have their priorities fucked up.
+Digital City PC Repair well it's not really their responsibility to do anything-they are just a group of people who want to give back to the community. The City of Gary should be responsible for helping to fix all of those issues-and they're working on it but the process takes TIME.
because blacks live in the homes, and they only want to put money into buildings that blacks don't own. while they suck every penny out of black families, they fuckin racist that's why, they wait for black men to work, then take our food right out of our refrigerators. its sad
Because historic buildings are a part of the cities history. And as the city declines, preserving the buildings preserve hope.

It’s a cool building but waaay too far gone to ever restore it. It’s too bad Gary wasn’t able to reinvent itself before they lost the steel industry
