great vlog man. The city of Gary shure has a lot of history but unfortunately the hard economic times have taken a toll on it. keep the great vids commin.
Nice old antique Keewanee Firebox find, 4:37 - 4:38 and it is still in working condition. Likely to be as old as the building itself, and converted from coal to gas. Sadly, these nice and sturdy half-a-century-old time capsules from the past are becoming harder and harder to come by due to owners usually deciding to scrap these instead of just leaving them as standing relics during the building restoration process. Been researching loads on firebox boilers from the last century, didn't know that Keewanee made a "Bulldog firebox" model. Also like how the building owners adorned it with a nice little ornamented wreath. At least seems like these owners are treating it with good upkeep and respect! Keep up the wonderful exploration, would be glad to see more old boiler rooms still working like this!
Historic Methodist Church to Become Community Garden The city of Gary, IN plans to turn the towering gothic City Methodist Church, once the largest Methodist church in the Midwest, into a European-style ruins gardens... the city could save the sanctuary, bell tower, and a portion of the facade of the fellowship hall... Gary aims to transform “a blighted, hazardous building into a safe, aesthetically unique public space, with potential for private programming like weddings, reunions, art performances, and other special events.” Read more: tinyurl.com/y83s6ysp
My first time at City Methodist Church was Labor Day weekend 2010. Even then the building looked better than it does now. The auditorium stage was mostly intact. Most graffiti was minimal. The sanctuary roof was in bad shape but mostly in the upright position. I can't believe how bad the church looks since September 2010. Great video.
+Curtis 64 thank you! Yeah it certainly has deteriorated in the last few years. From what I understand the urban garden project has already started and the outside and inside of the building is being cleaned out as we speak!
Love this stuff. If you find a place in the NYC area i'm in. The abandoned small pox hospital on roosevel t island is highly patrolled, so wouldn't be a good one for us, although quite close to me.
+Here Be Barr thanks! I've heard of it! From what I've seen on RUclips it's possible to sneak around them lol. But I will have to do some research on some other abandoned buildings in that area as well ...
Nice tour, we just spent some time there filming in the church. Our video will be up on our channel. All of the vegetation was gone as of July 7th 2017 so the clean up has started.
The church is an example of failure of religion in America, tear it down manually. build a smaller .replica. leave the trees. You may end up with a flourishing church, after all
Hey love the video! I was planning on urban exploring there near the places you visited but is it safe there to explore with all the gangs and violence? Please let me know
Thanks! I’ve always been there when there were events going on in the city and during warmer months where people were always out and about. Can’t comment about gangs but that should always be taken into account. I‘be driven through there all the time and have had no issues.
Cool video. Would not be an ideal wander on a less-public day. GUS is pretty sad and I am unsure that the artwork makes its isolated location between two busy rail lines north of downtown more accessible or interesting.
I've walked it before on other days, it's not that bad. Just have to stay aware, but the city is investing some funds into revitalizing the downtown area slowly, so that is a positive step!
what's with the tents? Was there some sort of open house or something? I'm planning a trip to Gary for a day, I want to check out these locations plus some schools.
Yes!! The city of Gary sponsored an open house event last year, and they opened up a lot of these buildings. It’s a really cool spot, although the church is now under reconstruction and it’s not the same anymore, they’re in the process of securing a grant to revitalize it.
I haven’t been there in months but I dunno, last I saw it was cordoned off. They’re making an urban garden in there and keeping the shell of the building but removing everything else that’s non-essential! Yeah you’re right it’s definitely good!
I attempted to restore the Church the Knight foundation grant blocked my attempt to aquire and restore the holy sanctuary If you are local to Gary please help me with lobbying efforts to once again convince the city administration to grant the property so I can begin my mission of restoration.
+Adrian Campos not exactly sure but if I remember correctly it was a radio station of some sort? Looked kind of empty at the moment, if not used for storage.

That's so cool that Gary is embracing their abandoned sites.
So the church is not really able to be explored anymore?
I haven’t been there in months but I dunno, last I saw it was cordoned off. They’re making an urban garden in there and keeping the shell of the building but removing everything else that’s non-essential! Yeah you’re right it’s definitely good!
It's not an auditorium but a sanctuary and it's not a stage but a chancel

Hey man can you do a update on City Methodist Church, would love to see progress of the Garden?
Yeah I’d like to get back there eventually!
Unfortunately no garden atleast I didn't see one
Do you need a permit?
I dunno about a permit but I was there on a special event and I had no issues getting inside any of these places.
