  • Fix It Right! - Differential Service (S1E1)
Demonstrated on a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD.
In this video, we demonstrate how to perform an oft-forgotten but important maintenance procedure: servicing a vehicle's differentials. Most vehicle manufacturers suggest that this process be performed on regular intervals - usually 15,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first - and often after certain events such as towing. Both removable-cover and drain-and-fill differential styles are covered, and the instructions here also cover transfer cases on 4WD vehicles as these are generally serviced via drain-and-fill.
Be sure to check your vehicle's owner's manual for specifics for your vehicle, such as how often to perform this service and what fluids/oils to use.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read the disclaimer text at the start of the video before attempting anything shown therein. Take your time, take care, and be safe!
About the "Fix It Right!" video series:
"Fix It Right!" is a series of how-to videos intended to give do-it-yourselfers basic instructions on proper vehicle repair and maintenance. All of our videos show real repairs being performed on real vehicles by real technicians in a real auto shop. (Repairs are filmed and shown with the permission of the vehicles' owners.) Although there may be more than one way to perform any particular repair (and in many cases there are lots of ways!) we try to focus on the methods that will be safest and most expedient for DIYers with limited access to tooling and equipment.
We will also occasionally be showing repair processes that are too complex or dangerous for DIY, or require specialized tooling, expertise, equipment, and/or certifications. Those episodes will highlight the importance of hiring a professional auto technician for tasks that are not DIY-friendly, and demonstrate why such tasks are best left to professionals.
Please click "like" on this video, as it encourages us to make more! If you find this video helpful, we'd also appreciate it if you "favorite" it as well. And, as always, subscribe to our channel for the latest news and information on upcoming videos.

Indeed - the drain and fill plugs used in differentials and transfer cases only need a light "snug" to secure them. Overzealous use of tool leverage can result in stripped-out plugs, galled plug hole threads, damage to the case itself, and/or a stuck plug that has to be drilled out later.

I think this is one of the most neglected services there is on a vehicle, great tutorial. I used to do mine every two years before I was introduced to Amsoil synthetic oil which is recommended every 50-100K miles.

Just a tip, make sure you can undo the top up plug before you drain your diff.

  • @OneSourceAutomotive

Some differentials use an actual gasket, and others use sealant. The sealants we prefer to use are specially formuated silicone and RTV rubbers intended for use as gasket material, and most of these are "apply bead, torque down, done," as the formulation for gasket RTVs is often self-curing even when exposed to other chemicals. Toyota's FIPG (Form-In-Place Gasket), for example, can skin over in an hour and fully set in 24h while submerged in engine oil.

Good video, thanks! I usually like to make sure the drain/fill hole isn't stripped or has problems opening before taking the diff. cover off, or else one could end up screwed once the casing is drained if they aren't able to fill it back up. Also, most gasket makers require some dry time and curing before complete tightening, just in case some folks don't like to read the directions.

Just spoke with Permatex. Their tech said for front or rear differentials where gear oil is used, ONLY use their 81182 gear oil RTV product. They said that gear oil is acidic and will leak if any other RTV or even The Right Stuff is used. I asked about the anaerobic sealant
and was told NOT to use it either. No Ultra black, red or blue RTV either. Just a heads up guys

For a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you'll likely be using hydraulic oil, 75W140 up front and for the rear, 80W90 for normal duty or 75W140 for heavy duty. If your particular Jeep has a limited-slip rear differential (e.g., Trac-Lok), you'll need to add a friction modifier to the fluid - we've had good success with Lucas' gear oil products, which are available as the oil with the limited-slip additive already mixed in, as well as an additive for other oils.

When I get a new to me used vehicle, I change all fluids, filters, grease, tires- battery if in doubt. Clean fuel system.
Wax and polish all appearance aspects, ensure all features operate as new.
You couldn’t tell my 09 Sierra from new at 80, 000 miles, just getting broken in at a tiny fraction of new cost.
Soon have it as new, brakes and all systems are turn key for next 100,000 miles of motoring down life’s byways.
( I will not however purchase a vehicle from rust belt salt damage, that is simply insane what happens to those vehicles, they are ruined in one years time. You might as well dip them in battery acid. )
When I did my rear differential with reusable gasket, just for extra, I gloss blacked painted the clean cover. Some rubberized frame coat about the frame and man she looks good!
Her ride is solid and tight yet quiet and smooth, love it, 5.3 vortex plenty of power through auto six speed.

Generally speaking, what we film, both in terms of the vehicle and the work performed, is rather opportunistic, meaning that we film whatever happens to come along. We haven't had any Grand Cherokees in that year range in a while. I can't say for certain whether, when, or even if we'll have any specific vehicle come in for any specific job. That said, if a '99 G.C. does come along and the owner wants to heve the differential serviced, we'll try our level best to film it.

What type of sealant is better to use?

    • @OneSourceAutomotive
      @OneSourceAutomotive  8 лет назад +1

Several companies make sealants specifically for differentials, as hydraulic gear oil can soften some of the sealants used in other gasket areas. When using any sealant instead of a traditional gasket, always check its documentation/packaging for suitability for use with the fluid you're sealing against.
