I've made 5 of these with quilting cotton. As I use them for packing bags, I wanted as little weight as possible. Also, they just hold clothes like socks, underwear, shirts, etc. in a suitcase, and do not get so much wear & tear that I think you'd ever have to worry about durability. I suppose it depends on what you're using them for, but for packing, quilting cotton works very well.
thank you for sharing you make with cotton. there are many times that is exactly what we need when traveling, and we all know weight is important when traveling.
I have made bunches of these! I use quilting cotton for ones that I want to just use for clothes for packing plus it can be matched to what is inside. For example I traveled with cats from NYC to Arizona so all their food and toys were in cat themed quilt cotton so it was easy to spot in the car. Also batiks are awesome and give it a little more structure and as mentioned by someone else the inside is as pretty as the outside. Next is waterproof canvas, these are the most sturdy. A couple of points: you can make these taller simply by making the gusset fabric and hinge fabric wider! That doesn't affect any other fabric cuts at all. For the handles I used mostly cotton twill like you use for tote bag straps. My husband LOVES these for overnight trips or organizing his car and I use them for organizing my clothes for traveling or at home in the closet where we have shelves. Love the idea of adhesive binding and will be trying that. Thanks for this tutorial!
I've made several of these, in nylon (which makes it machine washable), in laminated cotton (which makes it easy to wipe clean), and I have finished the seams with zig zag and also just a large straight stitch. Some customers have bought the medium size for gaming equipment. Great pattern.
Couldn’t you use two layers of quilt cotton and use some double sided fusible fleece to fuse the layers together? Then you’d get different outer and inner fabrics for fun.
I make these with double zipper pulls and stiff interfacing. No handle and embroider a school logo and name and class year and use as gifts for High School seniors as a card box.
I make mine with batiks, lovely on the front and the back. Lightest weight possible. N one ever touts the benefit of both sides being good as I always get my pieces sewn wrong, upside down or adhering interfacing to the wrong side. Using batiks is foolproof. Nothing helps with upside down labels though!
OMG...I bought this pattern last year and finally cut out the pieces a week ago. This is perfect timing to give me more motivation to complete one. Thank you for all your tips and beautiful example.
Having a baby in July and I usually use packing cubes to pack everything so really excited to try and sewing it my self this time around … thank you so much for this tutorial
I've made 2 of these now. One in WPC (waterproof canvas) and one in clear vinyl. Both will be excellent for carrying projects in. If I sew any for packing, I'll use a lighter-weight fabric like quilting cotton, linen, etc.
These are awesome. My husband, son and I are traveling to see our Daughter, Son in law and Granddaughter in England in September. These would be amazing!!!❤
I've been making these like crazy! I'm using ripstop fabric, which is also waterproof and it's so lightweight that if takes absolutely no space in your luggage. I'm making them with a compression zipper as well, so then you can compress your items. I traveled last week with my new bags and they took up probably half the space that my clothing used to take. I also adjusted the size and made an extra large one that fits perfectly in the suitcase to hold dirty laundry to separate from the clean. This was great since we were staying in different hotels along the way. Would love to see you do the compression style.
Great video! Thank you! I have been looking at this pattern for a while, paired with the fabric you choose, it sealed the deal for me! Purchased the pattern and fabric! Would love to see a tutorial from you using Spenser Oggs Starburn pattern! I have sewn 2 already, what a great pattern!
I have some coated cotton from Sewhot which I think would be great as it is light and you can add wovenfix2 if you want it a bit stiffer. Usually I use it for lining WPC bags.
Hi Jess this is great project I am half way through one. Would it be possible to have a more complex bag soon please as I find your tutorials explains patterns really well. Ideally the Rosie Sling ? or similar please :)
I've never seen a gusset sewn this way and it looks so much easier than trying to fit it in a curve. Where did you get the adhesive binding? I don't see a link for it.
Love to be able to get that Linen Oxford in Canada. Sadly, shipping from US to Canada is almost the same cost as the fabric. Will keep searching. I have this pattern and have made them, but wanting to try other fabric options. :)
You say you used water-resistant for polka dot one but link brings you to waterproof canvas. Is that what you used then? Water resistant lighter material. Thanks
I have searched forever for a fully lined version with no exposed seams …. I found one teenie one in metric that the assembly process is not a nice finish… working on making my own but would love you to do a tutorial and create with a full lining (I hate binding and exposed seams)
What kind of lighter do you use? It's the perfect size for the job and your thumb isn't so close to the flame, nor is it as long as a bbq lighter. Would love to know the brand and a link if you have one. Thank you for video. Great tutorial!
Instead of using binding, could you not just make it a tad bit larger and then sew the wrong sides together, then turn it inside out and sew the edges again to make a French seams which will give it neat and tidy finish?
I always make patterns as designed before I try and modify but let us know. It is supposed to be a quick make that you use for packing and compresses easy. I just zig zagged mine :)

Thanks Jess 🤩😘What a fab tutorial 🤩 Loving your Pods!!

My thought too 👍
Sure, the idea for "packing" is a "light" as possible and squishes down. But if you want for other uses go ahead :)

Excellent points!
Brilliant!

Jessica, Thank you so much for this. I made two for a grandchild. i looked up 100's of videos and yours is the very best explained and complete.
Having a baby in July and I usually use packing cubes to pack everything so really excited to try and sewing it my self this time around … thank you so much for this tutorial
This looks like a perfect project to practice binding ❤

These could be used for so many things. It's adorable
Jess enjoyed your tutorial so much, PLEASE where did you get the self adhesive binding you used for the edges? Checked everywhere no luck. Please!!!!!
Perfect to use as project bins. Thank you.
I think the adhesive binding gives it more of a finned look than a zig zag stitch ❤
I LOVE it!!

What fabric did you use for the binding? Thanks
I cut the rip stop fabric in 1" strips and it was perfect for the binding.
Love it, thank you! I have the pattern, but haven't had the chance to make it yet.
Love these! I made 2 of each size in ripstop for the college kids. So useful!
Just this past weekend I wanted to look for packing pods pattern for upcoming trips
Love these out of ripstop nylon
Oooo yes!!
I have some coated cotton from Sewhot which I think would be great as it is light and you can add wovenfix2 if you want it a bit stiffer. Usually I use it for lining WPC bags.
Such a useful pattern! Thanks for another great tutorial!!
These are cute. Remind me of the Pack it in bags by Annie which I have made for several family members. Still have to make some for myself.
I've made those too but the bonus here is no foam... sometimes the foam drives me crazy lol
Live your tutorials! You do such amazing work.

It is the 3rd link from the top _ I was lost too. Can't find a UK supplier though
Great video. I love Spencer Ogg patterns 😍
You must have read my mind. My youngest son is away to Spain with his friends in a few weeks and I was thinking of making these. 🤯
Awwww what a fun adventure for him!! These will be perfect
I love the Spencer Ogg patterns. Thank you Jess for sharing your knowledge on another great vid!
Spencer ogg patterns are just so much fun to make!
Perfect timing!!!
Thank you for another great tut!!!
I LOVE that Linen Oxford I've used it to line a couple of bags. I has the perfect amount of structure.
Isn’t it the best?? I was nervous, but now it’s some of my favorite material
I just finished making a large one , and it's pretty cool. I had the pattern just never made them. thanks for the reminder ☺@@OklaRoots

@@tracyhastings 😞 I know shipping is insane US to Canada. Maybe a supplier there will pick it up.
What an awesome bag!!😊
I think so too!
Love this idea. Could you use cotton if you put Otto Coat on it to make it water resistant?
I bought coated cotton from Sewhot. Still very flexible but no raw edges
@@njame2137 cool thanks
You say you used water-resistant for polka dot one but link brings you to waterproof canvas. Is that what you used then? Water resistant lighter material. Thanks
Where’s the link for the adhesive binding?
3rd from top link
@@njame2137s
I still haven’t found it.
Please please please can you do the Zara double zip mini wallet by swoon. Really had a hard time with it.😂
Love these! Would the medium size be good for packing Mickey ears, or would the large size be better?
What do you think about using light weight vinyl and HTV on wrong side? I have had these patterns for quite some time, gotta get some sewn up!
I have searched forever for a fully lined version with no exposed seams …. I found one teenie one in metric that the assembly process is not a nice finish… working on making my own but would love you to do a tutorial and create with a full lining (I hate binding and exposed seams)
What kind of fabric and where did you get it? I have been looking for something just like this !
Check the description for links to the products! There are lots of great options and colors
What kind of lighter do you use? It's the perfect size for the job and your thumb isn't so close to the flame, nor is it as long as a bbq lighter. Would love to know the brand and a link if you have one.
Thank you for video. Great tutorial!
Never mind, I found them!!
How do you think home decor fabric work for this if I waxed it myself to act like waxed canvas?
Jess - can OTTERTEX or the knock off one from WallyMart (Pro-Tuff) work for these pods?
Yes! That would be a great option! Would be perfect structure
Great tutorial and pattern. I love these with a bit of mesh so I don’t have to remember which color is what in my suitcase. Thanks ❤
I love these pods. So useful for my packing. Don’t think I can get that fabric or binding in UK though. Love the colour 😊xx
looks great but i don't have a 34 inch zipper
Buy continuous zipper tape
Oh dear lol. Zippers by the yard are very handy
I am afraid of waxed canvas. I tried it and it gummed up my needle so badly.
I use Dry Waxed canvas from Merchant and mills - no issue :)
I bought Dry oilskin but in the UK- no issue for me
