- Daniella Abreu says she's blind in one eye after her dog's retractable leash broke. When her 60-pound Husky went after a rabbit, she says the leash snapped. "The handle just pulled out of my hand and just came back and wrapped around and literally snapped me in the eye," says the 24-year-old. I am more a classic leash than a retractable due to having more control over my dog as she tends to chase after things.
retractables have a lock button so you can use it like a classic leash.

Retractable leashes definitely aren't the best option for larger, stronger dogs. They may work well for smaller, less energetic dogs, but for high-energy dogs like a Husky, a strong, durable leash is a much safer option. I also have a large dog/Golden Retriever, and I rely on a sturdy leather leash because I know it can handle the strain. Retractable leashes can break or malfunction, especially with powerful dogs, so it's always better to use something more reliable to avoid accidents like this one.
Damn. I feel bad for her and wish the best life for her. I think it's important for dog owners to be stronger than their dogs.
This wasn't an issue of the dog being stronger than her. It was an issue of her dog being stronger than the leash. The leash snapped and recoiled, causing the accident.
My sister told me NEVER use a retractable dog leash...

My boxer snapped her retractable leash one day when she went to bark at another dog. She was incredibly strong and I knew it was bound to happen again, so I attached a bungee cord to the end of the leash, hooked it to her collar and never had a problem after that.
My female Boxer really did well with the harness collar that clips up front in the center of the chest. Works great to redirect when pulling.
All I'm hearing is don't own a dog😊

That’s why I use a rope leash for my baby….after almost feeling like my hand was gonna snap because she keep pulling on the retractable leash….we went back to using rope leashes

I’ll never use a retractable leash again. About 9 years ago mine snapped and my dog ran into traffic and got hit …. Still haunts me to this day …

As a former dog trainer, I will never ever buy a retractable leash ever in my lifetime! Because this kind of thing will happen, don’t think it won’t happen it will happen. Especially for high Energy dogs.

My dog wrapped around My leg/behind my knee and ran at full speed snd it sliced open the back of my leg in the creese. It took weaks to heal and have a nice scar now. But i mean its no bodys fault you just gotta be careful.
I do not own a dog, however I have been helping out a friend for over a year with walking her housemates White Husky while she's been away usually we walk him together and/or I will take him. She uses a harness with a 5 foot rope leash, which give him enough length. But keep him under control.
I remember me and my sister walked our husky while I was wearing shorts, Our husky ran around and wrapped the string of the retractable lease around the back of my knees and move quickly that it was hot and it made my knee bleed. Sister forgot to let go of the leash. Def getting a diff leash for our dog. Be careful guys🙏
I was using just a long leash when training my dog. He took off, took my reflexes a second to let go vs. try to stop him. 10 years later I still have an abrasion scar on my hand.

The leashes have a thumb button lock. I use it all the time walking my dog to stop her from chasing after critters.

@@loveforeignaccents oh yeah you can use other leashes wrong too. learned the hard way with my own husky that used to pull that wrapping a leash around your hand/fingers is a good idea until suddenly it isn't 😅 but some things break faster, some things just arent suited for all dogs.

SO not worth it to lose a finger or an eye for an animal who is unable to care for you or go out and make a living when you need it most! Be rational people! Animals do not belong in one's home! Her dog is too big for a retractable leash though . I had a retractable leash for my little terrier.. never had any issues.. I actually prefer a leash with a harness.. you get better control of your pet.
My dog weighed 20 pounds more than that and always had a retractable leash. The thing is one needs to know how to use it and have quick reflexes... and also not own an out-of-control dog, who doesn't obey commands.

i don’t even use tht leash on my big boy especially the same one as her dog. ik when i little n my cousin had the same leash as her and we were outside with our papa dog n i was in the middle n they went different ways n i stop walking and i just kept letting the leash until it clicked in my head tht the back of my knee was getting burn and almost halfway through my leg before i stopped it haha
