Teen in Runaway SUV Saved by Crashing Into Cop Car

- A Minnesota teen is expressing his sincere thanks for a state trooper's bravery. Sam Dutcher says he could not get his Honda SUV to stop or even slow down. He called his mom who alerted police. Minnesota state trooper Zach Gruver tried to catch up to Dutcher. Cops hatched a plan to get in front of the teen's SUV. "I ended up pulling my squad in front of him and letting him essentially rear end me, and then use my breaks to slow him down," says Gruver
That was intense if the police didn’t do what he did in the first place then the teen would have been a goner

When the most liked comment is such stating common sense
Glad to hear that everyone is safe. I can't imagine how terrifying it must've been for this kid to be behind the wheel of an out of control car at 100+ mph.
yeah and glad no other cars were on the road.... when he crossed that intersection!! yikes !!!
Thank the trooper for saving his life
Thank the groover
That would be terrifying.
This sounds terrifying. I am glad he is ok.
Honda: we have examined our vehicle and found that our officer was not at fault. i mean our car, our car.
Thank goodness this wasn't in the morning on a busy road and in the city. How scary but I'm happy he's safe.
Remember when this happened years ago to a lot of Toyotas that had to be recalled because the gas pedal was getting stuck on the carpet.
There should be an emergency stop of anything fails on a car.
that would require PRNDL shift by wire (electronic shifter) and electronic parking brakes, and the big red button would tell the computer to shift into neutral and apply max parking brakes but would lead to other more unaffordable issues down the road, most cars already have a handbrake (this is your emergency brakes) and the engine jammed at full throttle already going fast overpowers those brakes. in the video the teen tried killing the engine, we can assume he restarted it because in doing so he lost his brake pedal and steering, if neither were the case, that would mean the car is a deasel engine and its experiencing deasel runaway
in an emergency like this, you need to disconnect the wheels from the engine (shifting into the N on the PRNDL does this), now you can brake and come to a stop without the now screaming engine pushing the car further, this can be done on all cars and SUVs
Almost every vehicle can stop, gas or diesel, can stop if you throw it in neutral.
@@28ebdh3udnav So the guy should've thrown it in neutral?
@@BubbamanM yes, they could have put the vehicle in neutral and what would happen then is the car would just start slowing down
"Hey, Mom. I was speeding and saw a cop I passed a while back. I think they'll pursue. Can you please call 911 and tell them my SUV wont stop no matter what i do. Thanks, Love you!!!"
I'm worried that's going to turn out to be what it is, but I do kind of hope that it's a legit story and not something the kid made up to get out of trouble.
@@kurokoriit’s not made up 🤦♀️ they can easily find that out. It would’ve been easy to put the brake in
@@99Em07 how can they "easily find out" they can find out how fast the car was going but not whether it was intentional

That’s far fetched and he could have died….I don’t think he was willing to die to get out of a speeding ticket unless he is suicidal
a Honda? that's so rare... maybe carpet stuck at the gas pedal

@@Javieraguilar7that’s why my floor mats in my Toyota have floor locks, because of this very incident they installed them in my RAV4
One of my biggest fears
Awshit LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CAR DEALERSHIP! MANUFACTURER
The manufacture won’t have to pay anything. This is obvious driver failure. There’s no way every feature used to stop the vehicle like brakes, shifter, e-brake, and accelerator all failed at the same time. What probably happened was an oversized floor mat installed by him or the dealership he got the car from caused the accelerator pedal to get stuck. That’s my honest bet. The dealership on the other hand may be liable
Why? You don't even know what the cause of the "problem" was.
@@DannyxboyXxz cars have throttle by wire, it can be electronic failure. Rather wait than speculating.

I’d take it to an independent mechanic.
Absolutely!
100% grateful to the officer without him this kid definitely would not have made it. I’m sure that is absolutely terrifying and nightmare fuel. No pun intended… I’m glad the teenager is OK and hopefully will be getting a new car that won’t be speeding out of control.
What if he had thrown it into neutral ?
I agree 100%. new Vehicles with all that Computer Jumbo.. atleast once i heard neutral hasnt worked. Who knowz.
I had a similar experience with this in my 2004 Jeep. When i shifted neutral my revs were up to 4-5k. Turns out my throttle cord popped dang that had to be scary for that kid
If he did, the car would have come to a stop, and there would have been no news video
@@WuRaVari Sorry, but that's irrelevant. Even 2024 cars stop in neutral as much as cars in 1964. When in neutral, your gas peddle with never increase you speed. You may rev your engine, you may even ruin it, but hey, your life is more important, and you're going to crash anyways, on top of the car car already being faulty
Another genius in the comments wow 🤯 mind blown why didn’t he think of that or the cops who were all helping the kid out you must be extremely smart
@@TraceguyRune Well sure my story is pointless.
Otherwise though if a transmission fails for whatever reason and you Switch gears to Neutral... if somthing isnt connecting your car will still be in drive. Its easy to look up
There’s a story like this!!! But it was a woman and there was a recorded call where she called the police crying that her car won’t stop or break. That truly would freak me out if I was in a situation like that. I have to not think about it to not trigger the PTSD 😅
Too many computer and electronics in the car definitely cause this
What a miracle! Idk how many roads near me i could do 80+ mph for more than 10 seconds.
Would be hellish if the road isnt empty
I’m pretty sure the last thing you want to do is lock your rear wheels at 100+ mph by pulling your parking brake

Trusting the Honda dealership 😂 to find the problem
they'll say theres no problem with it and return the car with the oil pan missing, 4 misfiring cylinders, a dead battery, and a broken transponder and bill the owner $20,000
They gave E. Honda's Honda to this kid by mistake.
These incidents taught me a few things.
1. If my car is out of control, use the e-brake *slowly*
2. A manual transmission car is easier to stop than an automatic transmission car.
3. Never panic.

It really wasn't that hard, sure I definitely didn't like what happened, but I did what I needed to do.

I think this generation of Pilot uses an electronic parking brake and push buttons for a shifter and engine start? I don’t know might contribute to the situation?
Let me get this straight.
1. Accelerator stuck down
2. Brakes were not working
3. Could not shift car to neutral
4. Could not shut off ignition
5. Could not down shift to a lower gear
That a hell of a lot of unrelated systems to ALL fail at the same time.

Someone more experienced would do the following in a throttle runaway situation:
1. Put vehicle in neutral, if possible
2. Emergency shut off engine by pressing and holding the push start button.

Floor mat probably got stuck on the pedal highly likely
Umm, no? If that were the case , then him pulling the emergency brake or switching off the engine would’ve caused the car to stop - which it didn’t if you even listened to the video
*God* was with him. Amen 🙏🏽
Why do ppl call everyone but the cops themselves?
He calls him mom so she can call the cops & relay the info.
Why couldn’t he call them & do it himself?😂😂
I was thinking that as well. Calling the cops first instead of your mom will get the situation delt with even faster.
Going that fast his phone could have not been in a phone holder, fell, and might have been able to just use Siri to call mom from contacts vs 911 🤷🏻♀️ other people I’ve seen this happen to have called 911 directly though lol

He's a kid, lay off him ppl
One LUCKY family ❤❤❤😊
I also noticed a partial lunar eclipse in the background
This just seems fishy. He calls his mom instead of the cops or 911, then his mom sounds way too relaxed describing the emergency as crazy but sure doesn't seem worried for his life. I can't see it being fake for the money though cause kid had to drive that and get stopped etc. Just seems odd to me.
Maybe he thought he was gonna die, I would call my mom first tbh
I agree. I bet they find out he faked this.
If can't dial 911 in an emergency he shouldn't be driving.
Really? People react differently in traumatic situations. Just because he wasn't acting like you expected him to doesn't mean he was lying. This is not a movie or a tv show. How about you let the investigation find out what happened to the car before jumping to conclusions.

Even the shifter in modern vehicles has no mechanical connection to the transmission. If the car computer malfunctions, you’re in a deathtrap.
Dumba$s 🤦🏻♀️ if it were that simple, ten him turning off the engine would’ve also worked .. yet he did that and the car didn’t stop
This car which looks to be a 2022 model Honda Pilot. Which IS a Shift By Wire system I.e. it is electronic and NOT mechanical. So it is possible for that system to not engage the transmission into Neutral. Which is frankly why I hate these new transmission systems!
His best bet would have probably been to perform an override engine shutoff by holding down the start button while the parking brake is engaged.
Thanks be to GOD for that 🙏🏾
It's almost always the floor mat blocking the gas pedal down.
If it was a diesel it could be the turbo seal went and it started a runaway cause of burning oil :edit oil also goes to the turbo so when the seal goes bad it goes down the pipe into the air on the engine and the only way to stop it on a car is to clog the turbo or air filter:
How did the software engineers miss that? OMG
MN State trooper uniform looks like Reno 911
Honda does a good job with warranties and government call backs
NEUTRAL!!!!!
This issue on a newer Honda Pilot is uncalled for. If I was the family, I’d go after Honda
He was late for his important meeting!
I guessed he got confused and forgot how to use the neutral.
Can you put it in neutral or park?
My guess is the floor mat was hitting the gas pedal. Seen this happen a lot from working at an oil change shop where the employees had to drive the car into the bays. So many people have their floor mats loose and touching the pedals why I have no clue but seen it often to not be too shocked anymore
but brake peddle should be able to override it. even shifting to neutral would help.
@@Trust_but_Verify that’s true. Scratch my thought lol
the kid is lying and his mother is way to calm. most cars brakes can easily over power the engine......parking brake......or neutral, hell, even manually shifting the the auto into first gear.......turn the key? far too many ways to get the car to slow down, only one way to lie tho.
You clearly have no idea on the mechanics of either an automatic transmission or a manual transmission. I can guarantee you that if your engine gets stuck revving up in a manual vehicle, there is NO WAY you're going to be able to set it to first gear. If you can operate the clutch, the best thing is to put it in neutral, IF being the key statement here.
This used to happen all the time back in the day, but we had more common sense. The carburetors would get stuck the throttle light open. You just shut it off and throw it in neutral.
@@Alexchevynova exactly. I had a 1991 P10 Nissan Primera with a carburetor, and it happened to me once, most of the times it would go the other way around and stall, but that day the engine got stuck revving and all I did was just press the clutch pedal, put the car into neutral and turned off the key.
But in the case of an automatic car, it's a bit different, and if by any chance you do have a problem with the transmission, then things get a bit more complicated if you're not able to keep calm and think...
@@Alexchevynovayes and no. This doesn’t work in non-belt powered vehicles
@@PauloBrinca that was a 1991. Is this car in the video your car? No? Ok then
Its scary many new car have no real mechanical connection to the controls. Computer transistors can ignore your actions if they get glitched out, but physical control like the car key keeping a mechanical relay closed to keep a fuel pump running cant ignore the key coming out because of mechanical physics.
How is this even possible? Throttle runaway is completely possible due to computer issues.
But there is no way that both the transmission failed and couldn't shift to neutral, AND that the emergency engine shut-off failed at the same time. In Hondas, even in Drive, you can kill the engine in an emergency by pressing the start button twice, or holding it.
thats how you get out of a speeding ticket
I’m surprised they didn’t use the new grappler
I hope y'all follow up on this story and let us know what happened.
The throttle mod on ymfirst car was going and this almost happened to me when i tried to pass someone. My car it near 70 and i kept the brake to the floor it finally got under control and slowed down and went back to normal. I wont pass anyone on the road now for fear it will happen again. I cant imagine going that fast im so glas that kid is ok and safe
In this case he should have also tried to put the care in nutral.
he was in a panic so he probably did not think about putting it in neutral then step on the brakes
0 comments let me fix that!
No no, we were there
im curious to see how this even happen and why even shutting off the engine didnt work
Couldn't put it on low gear either, I'm guessing. Standard cars give more control, yet they have become in danger of extinction!
You know if you take your foot off the gas, the car will slow down 🤦
Omg bro i would have had a heart attack...😢
I wonder how the grappler would have done in this situation.
The brakes must of failed
There was a thing awhile back with Toyotas when the format were moving on the accelerator so. It could be the same story here
Press and hold the start button.
Very strange story. If the car wouldnt stop, even when the boy did the emerencybrake, did the ignition out........why didnt we hear the engine still roar against the policecar?
Maybe there is a lockout function that will prevent the engine from shutting off at speed. This could be to prevent the loss of power steering, power brakes, and other functions that can affect the ability to drive safely.

Take the keys out of the agnation
you don't e-brake speeding that fast, car may go out of control or that sudden stop maybe flips it. Shutting the car off was the right thing and that would eventually have the car stop but good thing for the cop as yes maybe if he runs out of road that would be bad.
He didn't attempt either of those things. He's lying.
@@cannawithkendall1872 I agree 100%. Theres no reason for the car to not stop upon turning off the engine and in most cars the hanbrake is just brake cables and no electricity so for it to stop working too is just not realistic.
The parking brake on this Honda HRV is electronic, he can push the button at that speed but it won’t engage, also that car has all wheel drive traction control so the car did what it was supposed to do
