very important note with potholders. If you intend to use them to handle very hot off the stove pots and pans make sure your yarn is cotton or wool! acrylic or polyester yarn will melt in contact with high temperatures which not only will ruin your work but more importantly can be a hazard to you if it melts while you use it. So please avoid using acrylic yarn when making potholders or other items that will come into contact with a heat source

i also like using two strands of yarn and a hook a little smaller than i should use to make sure the potholder is nice and cushy and won't burn my hand or the table. ive also seen people making a rectangle and then folding it, or making two squares and connecting them

I concur. A few years back, I learned this the hard way. My mom ended up with a very lovely potholder decoration, totally unusable. 🤦♀
I have been using acrylic pot holders for better part of 40yrs and have never had them melt or burn.
