    a good habit would be to mark one inch in from the end of the pipe as the Sharkbite needs to be inserted that measurement from the end , and also deburr the pipe after cutting, small burrs can damage the o-ring in the fitting.

  • @naulconejo1143
    @naulconejo1143 3 года назад +69

    With shark bite your not suppose to use sand paper to clean the pipe. It needs the smooth surface and you did not deburr the pipe. That can damage the rubber o ring.

    I have been doing this work for 30 years, and just recently introduced to these. I never tried them before because they seemed like such a high expense. Until one day, for some reason i just could not get this one joined sweat on. It just wasn't happening. So I tried one of these and BAM, was done. I'm hooked. The material cost trumps my labor cost making them well worth it vs. my time.

    I love your videos but the comments section is right in this one. You ought to update. Shark bite has said they need to be clean but not to rough up the pipe and be sure to debur the inside as burs inside the cut section will cause turbulence and cause pin holes. The rough exterior pipe can cause twisting or breaking of the o ring, especially on the smaller dimension pipes where the o ring is a thinner diamater.

    I've been watching several of these videos and love the helpful tips and tricks. Your videos are exactly how you market them, pro results for the DIYer. One of the videos I see missing from the arsenal is how to replace a washer box and how to replace a single valve in a washer box. That's one I'd be very interested in watching! Keep up the great work guys!

    Excellent work. Work smarter and not harder. People swore up and down that galvanized pipe was the best, then came along copper and now pex. Uponor I believe is the best for flexibility and cost effectiveness.

    I find your videos very helpful. I got hooked on the series when you built your own shed "from scratch". My understanding on Sharkbite though is that you don't want to use sandpaper on the outside of the pipe. It needs to be smooth to have the best fit. You do need to deburr the inside and outside of the fresh cut which the sandpaper did for the outside. Have you noticed any problems using sandpaper?

    BTW, I watched a few of these videos & it is suggested NOT to use shark-bites connectors inside walls. Since shark-bites are a relatively new product there are some concerns. There is a rubber O-ring inside these connectors that may dry out from chlorine (in some waters) causing leaks. I suggest buying some "Jack's" lubricant which is used for swimming pool O-rings. Do NOT use a petrol based lubricant (Vaseline, etc.) on rubber. "Vaseline or other petroleum products should never be used on rubber or neoprene objects. It can deteriorate the rubber or neoprene very rapidly. The correct lube to use is a silicone based lubricant, which comes with or without Teflon. This is available in spa or pool stores." "Jack's Formula 327 Multilube, SP0327 by Hayward. Pool & Spa lubricant for o-rings and threads on pool equipment." I would presume, if one's water contains chlorine one would use Jack's....if needed in these shark-bites. ????????????????????

    Aside of attempt to pull it off for check, there is need to make sure that fitting actually pushed all possible way down using some template mark on pipe. SB fitting even after complete and snug installation still allows some rotation, so its hard to tell how tight it fit. While, having fitting not completely snug to pipe edge, will let exposure of full water pressure to wash out o-ring sealant more aggressively which will be matter of much shorter time to cause leaking. Pushing it all possible way down, will reduce exposure of o-ring to pressure and let it last much longer.

    If you are ever not sure if those sharkbites are in all the way, there is a depth tool that sharkbite makes that u can use to mark your pipe. They sell them in the same aisle as the valves.

      I looked at those ($17 @HD...) and then found a chart online that splained it to my satisfaction. Google up: sharkbite pipe insertion depth sharkbite fittings. All the info you need. Not a word of instruction on the SB packaging either, just to make you worry, they can keep that "tool", I can't see why you'd need it.

    Do you have any tips on how to repair basements? When it rains water literally comes inside from the ceiling in a continuous stream on one of the walls and the entire basement floods. As if the concrete is corroded. I've pleaded with my dad to call a professional but he thinks he can fix it by pouring concrete in the cracks. I keep trying to tell him I;m afraid it might be a foundation issue (the entire house has cracks in it and it looks like it's sinking) and it can really cost him if he doesn't fix it right. Please help I don't even know who to call. A contractor? Structural engineer? Where do I start?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  5 лет назад

      Most solutions cost a lot of money However, water always finds the easiest path. If you can divert the water from the foundation that is the first thing to do. In most cases it requires a shovel and some hard work to slope the ground around the house and make sure it finds a ditch or catchment basin. Then you can look at how the house is sealed up from there. Not much you can do from the inside. Hope this helps. let me know how you make out!

      @Steve Correct. Pex actually expands and contracts. Pex A is the most flexible and does not weaken after multiple expansions/contractions. Look at some of the Pex tests done on Matt Risinger's channel.

    I would have used the original copper line (but support it, it was just hanging with local level pressure supply) used a ball gate isolator, to supply the water to the dwelling, then used maybe a sharkbite after, ideally local to the taps aka facets, for example, for ease of installation, copper is king, suitably installed and maintained, eg mechanical protection, easily ( as practicable) accessible, etc

    Sanding copper pipes is not a recommended prep method for sharkbites

  • @curiosity2314
    @curiosity2314 5 лет назад +1

    Ball valves absolutely, Shark bite I personally would not install them but in a pinch to save a flood when you could not solder yes the way to go in an emergency. Do know enough about longevity. I would use a finer grit sand paper on the copper or the wire tool more commonly used. Not knocking what you are doing here I just have my own tried and true methods that I like to work with. At 12 years old I fitted a 40 horse barn with automatic waters for each stall, a person got me started on one stall and I completed the rest like three months later. There was a lot more to around the barn besides hook up water. I think I re-glazed around 2000 8x10 windows that year also. The year was 1972. Learned a heck of a lot more since. 100% on board with waste PVC but just can't go there pressurized. Just my opinion but if you do copper do blue not red pictured here.

  • @roderickroderick7216
    @roderickroderick7216 5 лет назад +7

    Straight from the manufacturer. Do not sand the pipes before fitting a shark-bite connection.
    Not that I would ever rely on a single O-Ring seal in a waterline anyway.
    O-Rings are rubber and will degrade over time, that WILL fail just like ALL O-rings fail over time.
    Shark-bit is great for a temporary solution but never for a long term one.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  5 лет назад +16

      The point of sanding was to deburr after the cut which is required. This fitting will last 50 years and I am fine with that since it is in a very easy to manage place.

      Scotch brite works good.
      Sharkbites are great in exposed areas where you will notice a drip, in 20 to 50 years, and the drip and will not cause damage (like in video). They are also good for water heaters (just about any plumbing fixture) since they outlast them. There are some municipalities that require a burn permit for torch work. Excellent work around for that.
