Hi, I have neen owning two GTE's now and I still very or rather extremely disapointed on the buold quality. A few of serveral big things was and still are in the new face lift: 1. After while your suspensions starts giving bad noise. To cheap component or to weak or both? 2. Plastic/matetial noise inside the coupe. After the 3rd visit to VW, they replaced a plastic part around the automatic gear changer and the noise disapared. Then a new constant constant plastic noise showed up inside on the right front console or door. 3. If you charge the battery while drivning, it generates a high frequent screaming noise that wake up your neighbours. ==》I would try some of the other ones that finally has picked up on battery capacity (still to low it should be real 100 km), BMW, Mercedes or RAV with 4 wheel drive and 75km!

All in all a well balanced review of the Passat GTE as having one not facelifted one at work. One thing about the range in EV mode, it's not great, it optimistically tells you 45-50km range when you start depending ambient temperature. One gets like 25km-30km out of that driving economical. We also have a Kia Niro plug-in and it says 50 km range when one starts and goes 50km even when it's colder outside when driving normal. I really hope they have improved the real world EV range now because it shames an otherwise very nice car.
I have the first gen Passat variant GTE from 2016. There is a few things I like better on mine. First the Active info display is bigger on mine, but not so customizable as the new smaller display. And I like the old analog clock, The new steering wheel looks good. What I really would want from the new on my older one is the bigger battery (and e range) and the new IQ head lights, and a few of the new and updated driver aids. But all in all the changes is not that big. I love mine and have driven it 110 000 km.
Thomas in the title asks: is this PHEV the best choice? Yes, possibly the best choice of Passat - but one of the most expensive Passats! Basically, PHEVS (and BEV's) are nice (and can be fun) but are expensive! Or very expensive. I'd want a PHEV with a long EV range - and affordable. Might be different for different countries due to taxes and such. Here in Norway it's the cheap choice as you don't pay sales tax on electric and hybrid cars. That tax would be around 12k euro for a petrol or diesel car
I looooooooove the Passat! ❤️❤️❤️ I had two of them in a row, a 2014 and a 2017, company cars, of course SW diesel 150cv dsg. Now I have an Audi A4 avant, which is somehow more posh and refined, but I have to admit I miss a little bit the larger boot and the super solid and “down to earth” interior design of the Passat. In three years I’m going to replace the Audi, and I’m really already considering to come back to the 2023my Passat, and why not hybrid! By that time I think most company cars won’t be diesel anymore.
The US Passat ist trash. The interior feels cheap and old. And it makes a lot of wind noise when you drive it on the highway. The EU Passat is a completly different car, you can compare it to an Audi A4.
Mine is hopefully ready in two weeks. Same colour, same Pirelli tires. Different rims, I believe. Analogue cluster, 8" screen. No ambient lightning, no sunroof :(, but I do get the parking assist, rear camera, DCC and all the assist toys. I'm still undecided if I miss the blue GTE brake calipers, or if they indeed left it out on this colour because it would kinda clash :).
It’s a damn shame Volkswagen won’t bring this or their other wagons to the states. We have had all of their Sportwagens from the Passat to the Jetta TDi and two Golf Sportwagens. We have now the 2018 SEL Golf Sportwagen and I now have a 2012 Volvo XC70. Amazing that VW USA thinks we don’t want wagons. At least Volvo does. Probably hold onto our Golf Sportwagen for a while.
Thank you for this review. I'm gonna buy a Skoda Superb combi 218 iV from 2021. The superb has quite the same engine, battery and space as the Passat GTE. Can't wait to have it ^^ Nice video. Cheers.
All the people here who claim that Thomas is driving a 2020 model because the 2021 model "has digital climate controls" are wrong. The 2021 model has the same "analog" climate controls as the 2020. You are probably confused because you have seen pictures of the Arteon 2021 which DOES have digital climate controls.

Hi! It sounds that there is some outside "engine sound" in the E-mode / electric drive. I have a 2020 model GTE but the car makes no e-mode engine sound. Is there a way to activate it? Or is it new for the 2021 model and forward? Greetings from Norway😎
@@autogefuehl thanks! Keep up the good work! Autogefuehl and you Thomas is by far the best car review channe out therel👍i do have a dream to have a job as a car reviewer my self😊
I have a dec-2019 model (still a facelift), and it doesn't have the 'e-sound button' that I see on every 2020+ model. So I guess it just wasn't ready on the early facelifts or something, or the regulation came in later.
A LOT of similarities. The Skoda is a tiny bit longer in the wheelbase, and has a reported boot space that is +/- 27 litres more. I also believe the normal suspension is a bit more 'floaty' in the Skoda, but if you get the DCC on both and set them to Sport, they feel the same. So, the Skoda is extremely similar but bigger. But if you notice the space increase in practise remains to be seen. Weirdly enough, the Skoda was cheaper when new, but is more expensive in occasions now.
I think brutal turning on of an idle engine on an Autobahn brings lots of wear and tear to it (cold temperature, no oil up...). I think plugin hybrid needs some thinking about your journey to avoid this occurrence.
Agree with you. Your concern is driven from the now old concept of buy and hold for 10 or + years. Manufacturers have adhere to the smartphone business model which means own or rent it for no more than 3 - 4 years. When at end cycle, return it and rent or buy new one. If you add the incertitude of battery longevity, then the endless unknown loop is just perfect!!!
The TSI engine's in the GTE are NOT the same as the standard 1.4 TSI. The cylinder liners & pistons in the engine block on the GTE have been treated to prevent wear when been worked hard when the engine is cold.
What Excell4ente said is right + if the combustion engine start (let‘s say when u kickdown in e-mode) there‘s a timespan in which u can‘t turn the combustion engine off (u can‘t switch to e-mode). It prevents it from being reved up high and instantly turned off again.
The engine is completely software controlled. Even if you kickdown in E mode, it starts and waits a few seconds and controls the revs. Also, I believe the oil is preheated through the block and the pump going even if the engine itself is not running. It's made to be shutdown and started again in a whim (the same as other start-stop engines, although those always run when driving.). It also won't turn off completely directly after, and starts every now and again to run some checks and makes sure it will not choke up.
Amazing review, thank you! I am considering this car for my next purchase and I am curious about something: what is the difference between GTE mode (max performance) vs. Sport mode? It seems to me at a first glance that is the same thing.
It is not the same... GTE Mode is using both engines all the time and Sportsmode is only a DCC setting for steering and suspension. AND...if you change to Sportsmode you leave the GTE Mode into the Hybrid-Mode. The GTE Mode has its onw steering and suspension mode, which is the most stiffest one...and unfortunatelly you can not adjust it, but you have to stay with it, if you want the full power...not possible to combine max engine power (ICE+eEngine) and normal DCC mode for example.
@@dragospahontu Yes, definitely. The fuel economy varies a huge amount based on city or motorway driving, normal commutes to work would be electric only which costs about £1 to charge fully giving you about 45 miles. Slightly longer journeys or motorway driving will have the hybrid jump in automatically which keeps it at a very good. A 200 mile long drive to Wales gave me about 56mpg.
Loooool now that u say it... :D yeah I guess I know what you mean and yeah it still does it... lol I‘m always gonna think of that now when I start it :D
It's incredibly annoying to see VW cutting the weirdest corners in their cars, considering how expensive every single model of theirs has become. The HUD isn't even projected onto the windscreen in this €50000+ car. You can get that feature in cars that cost half of this one.
Every car will be more expensive, bit then again volkswagen group really ups the ante. Looking at the small C-segment: a BMW 118i isn't that more expensive than its peers, actually quite competitively priced and with great drive dynamics it gives as base model
I’m so jealous, love that car, I personally own a B6 Passat 2006, but I live in Montreal, and they are no longer making the Passat, plus I never liked the American made Passats they are boring cars with fake muscle, and styling, no character.
@@HardcoreWeeaboo I’m not too sure if I can, in Canada we have strict environmental laws, plus, nowadays shipping anything in containers is becoming expensive and a logistical bureaucratic nightmare!

I know it's not the right place for that here, but when will you try the new 4series?
What about a testdrive of the Hybrid Arteon?
This is the 2020 model :) the 2021 model has digital climate operation.
Great video thanks🎉
The ambient light is optional right? Or is it always onboard as a GTE bonus?
optional of course... VW pricing policy ;P
I would love to have that machine but with a solid Manual Transmission !!!
Hi! It sounds that there is some outside "engine sound" in the E-mode / electric drive. I have a 2020 model GTE but the car makes no e-mode engine sound. Is there a way to activate it? Or is it new for the 2021 model and forward?
Greetings from Norway😎
That regulation probably wasn’t already counting for your model
@@autogefuehl thanks! Keep up the good work! Autogefuehl and you Thomas is by far the best car review channe out therel👍i do have a dream to have a job as a car reviewer my self😊
I have a dec-2019 model (still a facelift), and it doesn't have the 'e-sound button' that I see on every 2020+ model. So I guess it just wasn't ready on the early facelifts or something, or the regulation came in later.
I was hoping for the amg gt black series presentation...
From the on-board camera looks like a rather stiff suspension...
it needs to be stiffer than the 1.5 tsi because the weight from the batteries needs to be dealt with.
PHEV...because it saves me £2-300 per month on tax.
I would like this with the drivetrain of the touareg r PHEV
How does this compare to a Skoda Suberb Estate Hybrid? What are the similarities and differences?
@@tr10151 Battery longevity is the least problem. My 2002 Prius has its original battery... (Yes I keep my car 10+ !...)
7:40 congrats to the camera
Könnt ihr auch den CLA 250e Shooting Brake testen? 😁😋
2:42 That's it i'm done xD
I always love it when you put Above&Beyond on the stereo... #Anjunafamily, hope to see you on ABGT450 ;)
@@josefv-y8m thanks
@@josefv-y8m is the hybrid mode useful? What is the average fuel economy long term?
@@dragospahontu Yes, definitely. The fuel economy varies a huge amount based on city or motorway driving, normal commutes to work would be electric only which costs about £1 to charge fully giving you about 45 miles. Slightly longer journeys or motorway driving will have the hybrid jump in automatically which keeps it at a very good.
A 200 mile long drive to Wales gave me about 56mpg.
@@Yamezzzz wow so it's actually pretty good providing you charge the battery.
Does it still sound like the intro to Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode when you start it? My 2017 Passat GTE did that...
Loooool now that u say it... :D yeah I guess I know what you mean and yeah it still does it... lol I‘m always gonna think of that now when I start it :D
21:22 about the capacitive steering wheel: is one hand steering enough or you need to keep both hands on at the same time?
In other VW videos it has been enough with one hand
Its enough with one hand
It's incredibly annoying to see VW cutting the weirdest corners in their cars, considering how expensive every single model of theirs has become. The HUD isn't even projected onto the windscreen in this €50000+ car. You can get that feature in cars that cost half of this one.
Every car will be more expensive, bit then again volkswagen group really ups the ante. Looking at the small C-segment: a BMW 118i isn't that more expensive than its peers, actually quite competitively priced and with great drive dynamics it gives as base model
@@DennisDinges I know this isn't a good comparison but you can almost buy 2 entry level 1 series for the price of this Passat.
@@NotCommanderShepard Even more affordable. But a comparabke 3 series goes way over this passat
is it reliable
I see that's not just a coincidence, will you whistle every time when you will encounter fake exhaust? :)
Yes, of course, it’s the siren of the autogefühl “Fake Exhaust Police”
I’m so jealous, love that car, I personally own a B6 Passat 2006, but I live in Montreal, and they are no longer making the Passat, plus I never liked the American made Passats they are boring cars with fake muscle, and styling, no character.
You cant order from europe?
@@HardcoreWeeaboo I’m not too sure if I can, in Canada we have strict environmental laws, plus, nowadays shipping anything in containers is becoming expensive and a logistical bureaucratic nightmare!
You can get the NMS Passat
