It looks like planning the layout is definitely the key. Cutting pieces to fill the voids and then assembling the puzzle. And as Steve pointed out, marking everything before assembling. Great tips.
Love all your videos! So detailed and helpful. I installed a new Schluter shower and utilized your videos from start to finish! Everything you present is easy to understand and thoughtfully presented so a DIYer like myself can complete the project with confidence. Thanks a ton and keep up the great work!!!!
What size trowel did you use and how do you keep thins set from coming up between the stones? How much time do you typically spend scraping thin set out from between stones before you grout? Also, do you seal the pebbles before grouting and if so what did you use and how did you apply it?
great video. I'm about to install pebble flooring on a tile redi shower base and really didnt want to start cutting the pebblw sheets to fit. I like the idea of fitting pieces versus cutting.
I used a grey rock and have a number of dark yellow spots on my floor. I used grey grout and sealed it but would like a suggestion as to how to clean the pebble floor. I’ve used every cleaning product to try to clean it.
Hah -saw this after leaving comment on another video with interview with Sal. Between this and other video 100% agree. And yes -obviously be careful not to cut your Schluter membrane. Hah! Thank goodness I didn’t! Do you have to pre-seal the stone tiles before putting them down and grouting? What sealer would you use? Can you just buy a bag of pebbles and do it that way?
Awesome video! I got some of almost identical pebble mosaics for my bathroom. I haven't installed them yet, your video gave some valuable advice. Thank you!
Use German Keisel chemical dry thinset for that extra bold and faster dry time. The newest line available can be dry and ready to grout in 3 hours. The water based grout does not need to be sealed and has no haze clean up issues.
I bought my pebbles at Rocks in Stock and they are GREAT quality... The installer said it is very easy to work with them. Really love the result. I put on the wall behind the sink and on the shower floor.
Remodeling the master bath and are starting to tile the shower floor. We have the Kerdi system but can't figure if the drain plate should be above the tile or below it...we are using the cut pebbles
We like having the drain slightly below the pebbles so that water drains properly. Also, using white thin-set so that there's no discoloration of the pebble stones. In addition, stagger the pattern so it's unnoticeable and leave an expansion joint along the perimeter per TCNA recommendation.
Like they said the grate slightly below the top of the tile. Remember that it is the grout that carries to water to the drain and not the top of the stones. This is why it is important to make sure the grout is wiped smoothly and evenly when finishing. Low spots will cause standing water. Especially with stones that are not honed flat by the manufacturer. Sealing the stones before grouting is also important and helps cleanup and prevent stains in the porous stone.
Can I pebble tile over a fiberglass shower floor? Would i need to skim coat it first with cement for more durability, or just sand the fiberglass for better adhesion 🤔
How do you know if the mesh on the back of the tile wasn't applied with spray glue? Which would negate using these at all, right? Because in principle, if they just sprayed glue on the back of the stone, then applied the mesh, there would be no stone for the thinset to bond with at all, it would just be glue. Even if you could see the tile. Also, are there types of this kind of tile that can be used on walls? My wife wanted me to use the same tile for the floor in our shower (a similar pebble mosaic to what you used) for our niche.

Hello I have a floor with natural round stones (not cut) in a wet room and it creates a lot of little paddles when we use the shower. Would you have a recommendation on how to cover those paddles and create a flatter surface so it's easy for drainage and cleaning? I was thinking perhaps a layer of transparent epoxy but it's very shiny and it looks kind of plasticky.
I would think you need more grout if you have so little it's creating standing puddles? Although you have natural rocks coming through the grout, there should still be a sloping towards the drain courtesy of both your grout and your mortar bed/sloped pan.

I know I’m about three years late on this series but I just had my bathroom shower done with river rock and the contractor used to much thin set/grout how am I able to get it off the rocks after it has dried… Is there an easy way??
Hoping you could answer a question. A buddy of mine put down this exact pebble stone tile in his shower and used the suggested thinset to set it. being a DIY'er he put too much thinset causing it to seep through the mesh, essentially leaving no room for grout. The question I have is could this be a sufficient enough seal from water to use as is or does my buddy have to dig out the thinset in order to add the grout? I am attempting to help complete his shower. Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
He must dig out the thinset to allow some space for grout. Consider using expoxy grout -when it cures, it is much harder than regular grout and will stay there.

Is there a trick to measuring the sheets or is it just easiest to cut it close and fill in the spaces piece by piece. Just did a shower floor and bench today and my guy was having a hard time measuring the sheets to make a straight cut for along tbe sides of the existing tile wall. He was measuring from the longest point sticking out on a side. I got the idea to measure and mark it from the back side using the mesh Square edges as my point of reference to pull measurements from. Is there a trick to it or just as fast to cut the mesh and place stones in that are close. It was my first pebble shower turned out great just killed alot of time measuring and cutting and re cutting. I discovered when it was all said and done the 4. Stones on the outer corners are flush with the mesh
My wife just picked out similar tile. We purchased it and sent a picture to our contractor. He says he strongly suggests we get something else. He said that it requires a lot of grout joint and will be hard to clean in the future. I know nothing about this stuff. What are your thoughts?
I've never have a pebble stone shower, i just had one installed. My question is how long do floor commonly take to dry , and i find the water pools up a bit different places with pebble stone, since its not big flat tile angling the water to the drain. (the mud bed is angle and slopes to the linear drain) just with pebble stone its sheets and lots of grout and rocks being little uneven when pushed down and installed (... im sure water doesnt slope to drain as good as big tile) is water pooling up a bit common/unavoidable with pebble stone floors or .... i have a 5 ft shower with linear drain 1 end
Mine is pooling up too. And the rock feels weird on my feet. The smooth rocks are not all smooth and there is some unevenness to the rocks. I had the contractor come back out to re-grout and that has helped the water shed into drain some but there is still some water hanging out in the dips.
Excellent question. Didn’t know what to do about this so we installed pebble by pebble, now I think uneven grout levels between the pebbles may be a bigger problem.
It looks like the guy who installed my stone tiles just thin set them in and did not leave room for grout. I’m just noticing this but since he did some other OBVIOUS mistakes, I let him go. Would it be ok to just seal the thin set or mortar?
thin-set can ooze up between stones. You can apply thin-set then knockdown the trowel ridges and compress the stones. Or better yet use Ardex WA as the adhesive and the grout
It looks like planning the layout is definitely the key. Cutting pieces to fill the voids and then assembling the puzzle. And as Steve pointed out, marking everything before assembling. Great tips.
Yes, planning is key. Unfortunately these sheets were not working cohesively, so half the shower was just adding individual pebbles

My wife just picked out similar tile. We purchased it and sent a picture to our contractor. He says he strongly suggests we get something else. He said that it requires a lot of grout joint and will be hard to clean in the future. I know nothing about this stuff. What are your thoughts?
that’s true, but you could opt for epoxy grout to help with that. But larger tiles are easier to keep clean
My pebbles are coming up? What do I do? The installer told me the large pebbles usually come up in patches after a year
To the lay and grounting Pebbelstone, would i use an epoxy resin mortar to improve the adhesion.
you could possibly use Ardex WA but also check with the stone manufacturer
Should there be a gap between the wall and the shower floor tile ?
Can I use flex color cq grout for people floor?
I've never have a pebble stone shower, i just had one installed. My question is how long do floor commonly take to dry , and i find the water pools up a bit different places with pebble stone, since its not big flat tile angling the water to the drain. (the mud bed is angle and slopes to the linear drain) just with pebble stone its sheets and lots of grout and rocks being little uneven when pushed down and installed (... im sure water doesnt slope to drain as good as big tile)
is water pooling up a bit common/unavoidable with pebble stone floors or ....
i have a 5 ft shower with linear drain 1 end
Mine is pooling up too. And the rock feels weird on my feet. The smooth rocks are not all smooth and there is some unevenness to the rocks. I had the contractor come back out to re-grout and that has helped the water shed into drain some but there is still some water hanging out in the dips.
Question - The new house I just moved into has a shower floor like this and now 5 pebbles have come off. How do I safely fix this?
Do you recommend a specific type of thinset for the flat pebble stone?
Ardwx WA adhesive and thinset
Fantastic! Thanks!!!
thank you, hopefully the tips help out
I notice on a lot of these stone mosaic sheets the stones touch each other. Is that a problem when you grout?
Excellent question. Didn’t know what to do about this so we installed pebble by pebble, now I think uneven grout levels between the pebbles may be a bigger problem.
Do you just grout like normal? Is there a video for it?
Would have been great if you showed how to handle it around the drain. : (
thanks for asking, typically those pebbles are set by hand one by one
great tips thanks
What kind of grout was used?!
How do you get grout in between the pebbles that are right right together?
they should all be spaced and not touching, but we pack grout with the float or by hand in tight spots
Had this done in my shower, I recommend avoid the pebbles and use other tile, the bigger the better as was water will have harder time to get through
It's going to leak. There is no grout that will hold up and seal as tight as these are on the sheet. Bad install
@@SpittingImage89 is that true? My mother was planning to go with a Curbless Shower using this exact kind of tile, just a different color.
It looks like the guy who installed my stone tiles just thin set them in and did not leave room for grout. I’m just noticing this but since he did some other OBVIOUS mistakes, I let him go. Would it be ok to just seal the thin set or mortar?
I just had my marble bathroom demoed by the same guy who did it.... the whole thing was done terribly wrong. Dont feel bad ... it does happen.
I have dirt coming through the grout what cold that be....its not mold
When pressing in the sheets does the thinset ooze up between the stones at all?
thin-set can ooze up between stones. You can apply thin-set then knockdown the trowel ridges and compress the stones. Or better yet use Ardex WA as the adhesive and the grout
@@HomeRepairTutor hi, where do you get the artax WA??
@@lisawilliams15 local tile distributors, you can call ahead and see if they have Ardex WA adhesive and grout.
Thanks for getting back with me it's a big help
