your voice is so soothing and your art is so PRETTY!!!
i also agree with p much everything you said regarding the respect of anime styles, even as someone who usually prefers western stylization. its such a shame that any piece with that style doesnt get the recognition it deserves. with that being said, a whole generation of kids in the west who were raised on anime are about to enter the art industry and i feel like there's going to be a bit more respect for it going forward. im really only familiar with the animation side of the art world, but a LOT of animation projects in recent years have had references or obvious inspirations from anime, which makes me happy. i cant speak for the fashion or fine art worlds, though 😭😭

omg thank you for sharing your thoughts!! honestly i’ve definitely seen an uptick in anime becoming more relevant in the western sphere which is super cool - glad that there may be less stigmatization of it in the future :-)

That's so obnoxious that your classmate criticized your art when you literally didn't ask for them to comment. 🙄 So uncalled for! I would honestly be so insulted if someone said that especially after asking for my sketchbook 😂
As someone also in art school, I also feel a sort of embarrassment with my base skill starting from drawing anime, but like you said, it actually opened up so much expression and personality in my art even though it's not entirely anime anymore!

your lineart is so satisfying to watch! love the way you vary the line width, and seeing your pen movements/marks.

Anime is what got me into drawing so of course I'll never say that it's not real art. I actually used to be very pissed at art teachers when they said that. However, I'm so glad that I'm out of my "anime phase" because I was at point where I wasn't making any progress anymore. I would only draw anime girls and everytime someone would tell me to learn other things I would be upset. I totally understand wanting to draw stylised art only, and it's totally ok to draw anime style, but it's impossible to do that without learning the other techniques. After realising that my art progressed so much faster because I was finally trying new things, getting out of my comfort zone and actually learning the fundamentals of arts that would allow me to later draw in a more stylised way. Anime is great to start drawing but it's important to eventually learn all the different ways to draw

this is so true too!! i’ve definitely “left” my phase as well (aka when i solely did anime art and nothing else) and i agree that it’s definitely more limiting, especially if you want to become a well rounded artist, i think stylized art tends to plateau off at a certain skill level if that makes sense

Man i miss your sketchbook, draw with you videos with you. Before I listen to the essay I just want to say for a long time Japanese or any eastern story telling that wasn't Americanism was and still is very villainized because it uses unique storytelling (Kishotenkentsu) that isn't plot driven but focuses on world building and its characters

Wether people realise it or not, id argue people saying anime isnt real art is actually kinda racist and western centric in its own way, people are looking at an art style that belongs to another culture, art that has made people, laugh, cry, has had so much influence...but "its not art" because its the weird japanese drawings with big eyes and multicoloured hair 🤡
