its true that in the end gandhiji had minimal influence, but his effort was moral and aimed at the subconscious of people. When he started doing what he did, his aim was to bring justice to people his aim was never to overthrow the brits.

Before WW2, britain wanted to give india independence. Germany contributed to the late independence of india. The british wanted troops and weapons to fight and given india's soldiers and weaponary, the indian army supported the brithish. Also, not confirmed if this is actually true, but the british empire thought that india will join the axis powers.
