The K1V 8-bit VST has a unique purpose in that although it sounds quite horrid in some of the instruments it's voiced with, *a very valuable skill can be self-taught because with enough processing, you can achieve perceived authenticity that passes for the acoustic instrument having been recorded.*
There are undoubtedly VST's worth paying for but the overwhelming majority, they're not. With virtually every instrument you desire, someone has produced a free VST that uses real samples of that instrument but sifting through the hundreds out there is not fun!
DAW's in themselves are a dime a dozen without any named one truly being in a class of it's own. They can all be shown to do something special that qualifies them for that honorable mention of "the best".
As it is I can hear clearly when watching movies like the new Mad Max and countless others the entire scores are someone on a computer using synths and sequencers. It's rare they still bring in full orchestras to record a score even on the most expensive of film and television projects.
