Making A Christmas Orb

- This year's Christmas ornament is a sphere made from a walnut dodecahedron. I have cut a simple Christmas graphic on each of the 12 sides of the dodecahedron. Overlaid on this I added some colored pencils to add some detail. For example, there's a wreath that is a simple donut shaped inlay out of wood and the colored pencils make the bow and the decorations in the wreath. There's a simple gingerbread man shape with colored pencil frosting. The simple graphics on the sphere are made from cherry wood and the sphere itself is made from walnut wood. The sphere turned out larger than I had expected so it's really a little bit big for hanging on a Christmas tree.

The kids have gotten to that age that they think "Dad is weird" and don't want to participate.. We all as fathers go through the same thing. A few more years and they will be begging to be in your videos again.. Merry Christmas Frank and family!

I was thinking that Frank could put the ball in the lathe cup and slide that across the bandsaw table as a safe way to hold it.
I am looking forward to the year when you carve a tree on the lathe to become the home for all these ornaments you have made in years past

when cutting multiple "dowel" type things I tend to tape them together with blue tape (sort of making a bigger log) and use my table saw sled. With 8 or 10 taped together they don't fly off after the cut. Then I just untape them.
adding a splash of colour with pencil crayons is such a good idea!

That is an absolutely beautiful ornament for around the base of the tree. We usually put a wood house our daughter made, a light up ornament our son made and other cute things.

Dust collection suggestion: make some small mobile fences, like 20” long and 8” tall. You can move them around quickly to contain the chips

He should make a ornament holder in the shape of a Christmas tree to display all the ornaments he has made over the years.
@@gunslinger1108 The re-usable stick- or board-tree to lego- or dovetail together recurrently that could replace the annual throw-away christmas fir. I made those in different sizes some decades ago and gave those away in the family and to friends, but people generally found it "not the real thing" enough to actually abstain from fir and spruce. There's probably not any more conservative time during the year than christmas and newyear no matter how "progressive" people seem to be all the other weeks 😁

You can project the v-carve on to a spherical surface so it is deeper towards the sides of the pentagon, so when you turn everything down, they are about the same depth everywhere.

As the sphere is hollow you should put a message inside on a metal plaque that’s glued in that could be X-rayed by future archeology buffs for their enjoyment and bafflement 😁 merry Christmas
A little plaque with "IF YOU CAN READ THIS YOU'RE WASTING AN X-RAY MACHINE" inlaid into it in lead.

I’m a different kind of father, raised by a different kind of father from a vastly different age. He would have said, “You don’t want to wish people a merry Christmas? Do you pay for your own food, clothing and shelter? Because I really don’t want to do that anymore either.” To which the children replied, “MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!”
It's getting to the point that if you ever wanted to hang all of these, you'll have to make a tree out of fairly stout boards first. Another great one for the collection. This is one holiday tradition I always enjoy. Happy Holidays to you and your family and thanks for sharing!

An idea for next year, maybe you'd be willing to make a tree for the "ornaments" to sit /hang on. Thinking like one of those flat pack wooden puzzles that you can slot together to make a bike or a T-Rex. Something like that seems like it would be perfect for you to make with your CNC.

Love these videos. Might be fun to intentionally make the corners too thin and cur through them leaving a lacy pattern ... would mean also finishing the inside and the interrupted cut may be sketchy ... but would look really cool.
