I loved this man. Still do. Not only prodigy keyboardist, but seemingly a genuinely affable good-natured guy. I even forced myself to watch "Nightlife with David Brenner" in the early 80’s, only because Billy was the music director/sidekick. Granted I was a weird kid, but I knew outer-worldly talent. RIP, Billy. I’m sorry you had to deal with the all-too common B.S. that was/is the industry; which lead understandably to dependence on drug use, and then which subsequently effects our health. I pray your final moments were comfortable despite all; I’m sure the angels were alight to welcome you; likely playing your treasure trove of amazing gospel originals. Peace out.
The first episode featured two musical guests (Billy Preston and Janis Ian), and the second episode, hosted by Paul Simon on October 18, was almost entirely a musical variety show with various acts.
@@SuperC888 And it wasn't called Saturday Night Live until half way through the 2nd season, Lorne Michael originally wanted to call it Saturday Night Live but at the time Howard Cosell had a Saturday evening variety program on ABC called Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell, and Bill Murray was a writer on it, half way through the 76/77 season Cosell's show went off the air clearing the way for Michael to use the name Saturday Night Live and to hire a recently unemployed Bill Murray as a new cast member. Billy Preston, the very first musical guest ever on the show, played his hit song Nothing From Nothing heard here and absolutely knocked it out of the park, he set a mark all other musical guests since have chased after and none have equalled. Unfortunately here on RUclips the audio of that performance is all we can get because obviously Lorne Michael won't allow the video from the show to be posted on RUclips, and that's a real shame because Preston and his band were obviously fired up and it shows, that performance alone is worth buying the first season of the show, that's why I have it.
Unfortunately apparently Lorne Michael won't allow Preston's performance to be shown on RUclips, and what a shame it is because Preston and his band were fired up and really knocked this out of the park, I consider it to be the greatest performance by a musical guest ever on the show, he set a benchmark all other musical guests have been chasing after ever since and none have equalled. It's so good it's worth buying the first season alone for, I have it and at least once a month put it in just to watch this. There is about 45 seconds of it on a video here on RUclips, that must be the maximum amount allowed by law without having to pay or something because it's been on for about 12 years now.
So not to conflict having name title plagiarizing lawsuits with ABC's Saturday Night Live Hosted by Howard Cosell that already first aired before NBC's . After ABC's Saturday Night Live Hosted by Howard Cosell was cancelled NBA was able to call it just Saturday Night Live and the rest is TV history.
And Bill Murray was a writer on Cosell's show, so that's 2 things Lorne Michael got when Cosell's show went off the air, the name Saturday Night Live and a recently unemployed Bill Murray joining his show, matter of fact the very first night they used the name Saturday Night Live was the first night Murray was on the show. I have the first season on DVD but for the life of me I'm drawing a blank on what the episode number was, and who hosted it that night along with the musical guest.
Season 1 of Saturday Night Live then called NBC's Saturday Night began on October 11, 1975. It premiered with George Carlin, and ended with Kris Kristofferson. It was aired from 1975-1976. Executive producer Lorne Michaels originally wanted it to be called Saturday Night Live, but NBC aired it as NBC's Saturday Night.
