@@suenzhong7891 what notes have you make this assumption? Just because he greets them with enthusiasm doesn’t make their relationship an intimate one. Gortash says ‘I tolerated Orin, but I liked you’, because he’s tired of Orin’s antics.
People really need to remove those rose coloured glasses and see the story arc for what it is; it’s not in Dark Urge nature to be bothered with love, when he’s literally made purely from Bhaal’s own blood. Desire maybe, but not something so frivolous as love - simply because it doesn’t serve his father’s purpose.
Prior to the tadpole he was a calculated mass murdering psycho who indulged in cannibalism(and implied necrophilia), and who made a deal with the two other Chosen - but with the ultimate intent of killing both Gortash and Ketheric too in his father’s name.
This is from Gortash journal:

@@EmDaMo 1) voice acting direction notes given to Jason Isaacs show that Gortash is fond/genuinely cares about Dark Urge (voice direction for other characters eg: Tav is just for wanting alliance)
2) the in-game note where The Dark Urge ask for forgiveness from Bhaal because they admire Gortash but for Bhaal not to worry because they will kill Gortash (and Ketheric) at the altar. Normally I would just chalk that up to regular admiration and nothing romantic but Balthazar writes an addendum saying Orin was 'right about the Dark Urge' and Orin herself even comments about how much the Dark Urge allowed Gortash to influence them when you fight her.
@@suenzhong7891 But admiration and letting someone influence you doesn’t necessarily mean anything remotely amorous is present. Same goes for fondness.
IMO, people just tend to romanticise the character too much, when it’s objectively not(even if it is to some left ambiguous enough to interpret it as such). I honestly just don’t see how a Bhaalspawn of that caliber(or purity) - before tadpole - would be capable of, or have any interest in, actual love or anything beyond the most basic urges.
Because fact is that Bhaal is a sick f*** and the same goes for all his followers(I’m looking at you Sarevok), and seeing as Dark Urge was made from daddy dearest himself, why would he be any different?
Bhaal’s level of depravity is only compounded by the new epilogue(should you choose to defy your father in the end despite staying a Chosen) - and even more so if you’ve heard the unused ending audio/text file that was data mined of the narrator telling the story of your punishment by him.

there seriously needs to be a ending with Gortash and Durge. From what i can gather they were very close prior to Orin's brain scramble.

They were only close because of their plans for the Elder Brain together. Remember that Dark Utge is every bit as twisted as Orin - except in a more controlled manner. Though he does hint at _something_ about Orin:

@@EmDaMo there’s a lot of intentional vagueness in the backstory of the dark urge to allow as much freedom to role play as possible, but we know from letters written by both characters that there was genuine affection and admiration on both sides. So much of dark urge is open to interpretation/elaboration that I don’t think it’s that much of a stretch to imagine them having romantic feelings for one another, even if Gortash was also crushing on Orin at one point. Maybe he has a thing for bhaalspawn.

@@EmDaMo I mean, there's implications that they were close beyond mere co-conspirators, at least as friends. Notably, Durge admired Gortash enough that they felt the need to pray to Bhaal for forgiveness, and Gortash's entire demeanour changes around Durge. I don't think a past romance is that much of a stretch. Too bad Larian absolutely gave up when it came to Gortash lmao.

You can find a letter in the mind flayer colony that Durge wrote to Bhaal before they were attacked by Orin; they wrote that they admire Gortash for his brilliance, but they plan to murder him (and everyone else) once their plan comes to fruition. Pretty sure Gortash was not aware of THAT part of the plan lol.
Furthermore, he writes there that Gortash will be the second-last person Durge kills, Durge themselves being the last person to depart the world. I dunno man, but hearing from a bhaalspawn that I will be killed last is like a confession

Also because people seem to forget that the Dark Urge is an origin character, so even if you change gender/race, originally it’s a he - and he has only ever had murder on his mind. What’s interesting is Gortash’ journal where he mentions feeling ‘something’ - but not sure what - when looking at Orin.

@@EmDaMoOriginally being a "he" doesn't matter. If you choose to play a female durge you're addressed as being a female. The default options for durge aren't relevant, there's a reason they allow you to customise.

i watched this and made me wonder if a romance option was available for him because of this dialogue and i found a reddit thread of people being annoyed ppl want to romance him and say there is no chemistry for the characters and that Gortash didn't act like he wasn't into the durge and im like.... are we watching and listening to the same dialogue? Apparently in moonrise towers you can find a note the durge sent to gortash talking about how they admired him and im like... why the hate? i really dont get it LMAOOO

This is a nitpick but it's not a note TO him, it's titled "prayer for forgiveness" and it's directed at Bhaal. Durge is seeking forgiveness from their father for admiring Banes chosen.
I like how he denies you your titles if you don't go along with his plan, because if you agree from the begging instead of ex cult leader the line goes "I turn to you, the scion of Bhaal; You are his dear Prince - he created you to rule" which from Bane's chosen is the biggest compliment he can give someone, not to mention in front of the nobility.

For those I don't... well Wyll may be my conscience but I will admit that Lawful evil plotting can allure me back to my true alignment. Maybe the order of 2 chosen of the dead three can keep this brain under control and keep Bane's hand from overstretching the tyranny. I will see when my Durge gets there but my Tav is already plotting his murder.
When he says "Bane teaches his followers to reward those who support his Chosen," but then turns on you if you agree to give him the netherstones. I'm curious, is that some sort of contradiction within his religion? I understand he can't see the protag as an equal if they give him the stones so easy, but attacking/betraying the MC doesn't sound like rewarding them for cooperating xD
My theory is that he liked Durge a lot and he saw Durge as an equal. He doesn’t really want Durge to see themselves as beneath him.

Also in the texts, Bane does not ultimately share power anyway- he planned of kicking the other gods out of the grand design once he had enough power, so unless I'm wrong, it's more efficient to Bane that Gortash subjugate the MC rather than killing them outright. Just seems counter to both Gortash's wants/needs, as well as Bane's
It's a test to see if you're/you've become gullible. If you don't hand over the netherstones, he praises you for seeing through his scheme/being skeptical.

I actually think Orin has one of the best chances of redemption. She’s so clearly a brainwashed fanatic, and if you reveal Sarevok’s incest to her, she actually starts to break down and question things and Bhaal has to forcibly turn her into the Slayer. If there was a way to prevent that, I think it could’ve been the equivalent of Shadowheart’s moment with Nightsong that gets her to start thinking more critically about her faith and breaking out of the brainwashing. Not sure if she’d be a good person at the end of that, but she’d at least be her own person, and i find it so tragic that she died at the exact moment she experienced her first taste of true agency in probably her entire life.
She’s probably too chaotic for Minthara but id love to read a post-epilogue black buddy comedy of them roadtripping through the underdark turning their murdery ways to good use by fighting Lolth and such. I can definitely see Minty as the “straight man” (in the comedic sense) to Orin’s, uh, Orin.
@@alissapenridge7516 I love Orin as a character so dearly, and it always breaks my heart to kill her. Don’t get me wrong, she’s still very obviously a murderer, but she’s no less redeemable than Durge. She’s not only been brainwashed since birth but has been subjected to brutal humiliation and blatant favoritism on behalf of Bhaal. I guess as the obviously least favorite child a part of her speaks to me and my own feelings of inadequacy, and desperately vying for the love of a parent who will never love you back.
