    That BSR deck is a classic, and I had one back in the day. However, the spindles of the speed control and start/stop/reject are made of die cast metal and can seize. If they are getting difficult to turn, don't force them as the brown knobs are notoriously fragile and can easily be broken. They are virtually unobtainable!
    Clean the inner edge of the platter, the rubber idler and the motor spindle with meths and make sure the motor spins freely.

    Probably the drive mechanism needs a good clean and relublication, with special attention given to the rubber idler wheel which links the motor spindle to the turntable rim. Then the machine should be self-starting.

    Can you imagine someone telling you it's automatic and not to give the idler, a 70 year old bit of rubber a helpful shove? Still sounded tops.
