*****CORRECTION*****
Yes the blue tape is Masking Tape not Gaffers Tape. What an amazing gaff - it's probably going to be on a compilation of the most unbelievable mistakes ever made in an improvised youtube voice-over. Perhaps I should start writing scripts and fact checking them, but no... that's not my style....I'm going to keep freestyling straight from the top of the dome, spitting lyrics straight from my bald patch. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong...but they are always funky fresh. I'm out of here like last year.

8ban format is launching again, this Record Store Day, in the US and Japan. 15 titles are available, and Thirdman records is also involved again. Crosley is as well, with the RSD3 Mini Player. Lots of PR and social media buzz about this one!
I feel like this would do well today. Vinyl has made a comeback and people love collecting little stuff like this.
Super cool. I'm really surprised that this was made during such a modern time for music formats. 2004? I mean I can understand if this came out in the 70s or something, but this is nuts. Very fascinating to see that they had an itch for vinyl back in those days when it still wasn't very cool to use.
I agree. This product came 30 years too late.
What? Bandai are a toy company, this is nothing more than a toy. It's was not a serious attempt to launch a new format. I would have thought that was obvious..
Considering he unboxed a toy, yes it's obvious that it's not a serious music format, nor was I implying that. Other toy companies released other toy-style formats that were similar to their "adult" counterparts but they were released at times that were at least much closer to the peak-time of the format, if not just shortly after their decline of popularity. It seems unusual and surprising to me that this came out so many years after vinyl declined in popularity, yet so many years before the resurgence.
Very much true. I did understand what you implied.
Marky Shaw Vinyl was still/already a thing in 2004.
Those colored records are meant to be replicas of Asahi Sonorama discs put out during the 60's and 70's. They were basically plastic flexi-discs from the looks of it. The added pictures/descriptions are actually storybooks that went along with the record sheets. Wikipedia has a good entry on them....

Oh my gosh thank you so much for this info!!
You know, Techmoan, you should invetigate a bit about some 70's dolls that used a small record to play sounds. My mother just told me about that after watching this video. She said she had a doll that had a little plastic box inside and the box had a tiny record that played sound bits for the doll's "momma" sounds and things like that
Before audio chips they use small records to play the noises
Teddy ruxspin did something similar
I saw those records in the backs of the dolls.
Yes, please! I remember those dolls!
Indeed. I think early See n’ Say toys also use a record mechanism.
Wait did you said "The White Stripes"? Does that mean the original mix of Seven Nation Army is available on it?
Most White Stripes singles were pressed in the 3 inch format, including 7 Nation Army.

Crosley just released a mini turntable this year during record store day 2019. Mini 3 inch records are out to play on this device.
And of now, Crosley has finally released the Mini Cruiser where you can play 3” records, but it’s quite an improvement than this 8Ban, and it can play 8Ban records from Japan as well, including a 3” record with the theme to “Captain Ultra”, a TV show from Japan.
@@Musicradio77Network oh my god I want it.
I can't believe they made gacha records.
This both came out 30 years too late and 10 year too early.
Still fantastic video.
What a cute and obscure little bit of tech, I LOVE it when you find and feature stuff like this, it just tickles me. I was kind of hoping you were going to crack it open and jury-rig up some kind of stereo output to speakers, but using the Crosley was a much better solution. (as well as a chance to deliver some classic snark) Thank you!
Definitely a toy indeed as Bandai is one of Japan's large toy manufacturers. As always, love your videos. Really great stuff!
so cute!!!! This obviously must have been a project of love. The cost to produce the records alone would have been astronomical, then to sell them for $2 was pretty crazy.
It isn't. Full size records cost 1-3 dollars to make. The little ones are even cheaper.
This is so cool! It's a shame they didn't take off and they didn't run on mains or additional output. They could of made miniature albums...imagine how many you could collect and not worry about space?!
I have one of the White Stripes models (and the records). They released one record for this ("Top Special") that, to date, has only ever been released in this format. I ripped the Top Special record to WAV format by using placing the tonearm of a real turntable on top of the Top Special record that was spinning on the 8Ban turntable. (This worked better than you'd expect and I managed to get the angle of the tonearm correct). Yes, it was in Stereo, and yes, the quality is what you'd expect for such a tiny plastic record. Someone else did the same and posted a video to youtube.
chris newpher "someone else" :D

This reminds me of "Baseball talk". When I was a kid they had baseball cards with little records on the back. You would put it into the player and it had a sort of narrative about the baseball player. You should see if you could get ahold of one of those and do a video on that!
I remember going to my grandparents place and they had a toy that looked like a small record player except it worked more like a changeable music box. Pretty cool little toy.
Honestly, I would instantly pick up one of these if someone made them again
Good news.
These players were the only ones that would fit in their dorm rooms.
maxcohen13 win
You realize how many likes you have on this comment right?
For a toy record player it sounds pretty decent. It's probably comparable to the inner area of 16 RPM records.
If it's a 33, and actually stereo, might even be they used some sort of clever shrinking ray on real records. Or something. I bet the sound quality is purely a symptom of a novelty plastic toy record player, and the bit of tape Techmoan didn't quite hack up properly in his Crosley. Probably if you made the effort you'd get at least LP quality out of it. Why not? Putting grooves into vinyl is a mature technology, we've mastered it.
Before you flipped it over, i thought it was classic Japanese design from the 60s or 70s 😅
Didn't expect the 2004 date 😮
2004 was
aw man I thought the same thing, but I guess this is a very retro kind of toy so they did a pretty good job lol
Maxx Fordham! v i n y l s
that's not a word. You either say vinyl or records for plural.
Maybe Maxx Fordham is not native English speaker, or you are perhaps not one, I don't know, but all words he listed above I have heard. A well you could take in account that in different countries English is bit different, just look on American and British English. I, it is rebellion of some kind, use British English (well my other browser, not this one I am typing this) as default in my browser, and last week i was getting errors with word "fueled", it does not exist in British English, but is commonly used in American English. So some versions of English might allow vinyls, in fact spellcheck knows this word for both, American and British, it might be that use of this form is just rare in your country, or in English that you have learned in school.
In fact I have met group of Americans (I should say citizens of U.S.A.) few months ago and we had some problems with some words as I learned British English at school, well they had problem as I am used to hear both.
When he said it's from 2004 I thought "ooh that's not so long ago " Then I started to count and realised it's already 14 years old! Time flies by!
Crosley has "revived" the 3" record with their RSD3.It has a magnetic cartridge and audio out so it can be played thru a regular system. The TT has a speaker builtt into it.It runs from batteries-like the TT shown or a USB.
I guess this thing came out ten years too early.
I think if they tried re-introducing it now with some popular artists on board it may actually take off.
I'm investing all my retirement money in this crap, for sure!!
Benedikt itd be neat to have now for sure
I remember my sisters dolls. There was a record-like plastic disc which you could change and make the doll sound different.
33 1/3... Hmmm, those should be playable on my record player as I have an tengential arm that has movement reach way into the label.... And it's tangential so no problem with tracking angle being too way off...
... aaand, I have a center hole drill to correct off center records, so I should really be able to play those in nearly the best possible quality... (Scheu Premiere MK2, Airtangent 1b, Sumiko Blackbird LO)
Honestly old chap, it's just a toy, a bit of fun, a gadget...you can get all these songs in other formats. 8ban just is what it is and that's all it is.
Yeah, I know, but I am a bit like you... If I can do it, I WANT to do it... :)
Well good luck, but these old discs are quite hard to find as they were in and out of the shops in Japan in the blink of an eye.
Losing Weight, Ripping Vinyl Yea, and with that cartridge you could pound on the turntable with your fists while they're playing, and it will still track fine and not come through the speakers either. Like I saw in another video (it was actually a fellow AudioKarma member too funny).
I guess it would be cool to show off if you have guests over that are into audio. I'd certainly get a kick out of it. But I'm a total geek. So you can't go by my taste. LOL
Please post a video if you do get this working. And post the link to it here. I would like to see it.

Please, Mr. Techmoan, do you already have a vinyl record player at home? Well, say hello to the 8Ban, a mini record player that came out of Japan. It's like the similar models of old record players, like now and then, but you have a first record disc that plays the Japanese theme tune. Oh man, I have never heard that in my life! The speaker sound quality is bad or OK but mono, and you have many records that sound like songs from the 60s. I never got that one, but it's from the 2000s and it's from 2004, I guess. Thank you so much, Techmoan, for making my suggestions! Also I forgot the speed control.

Back in the 1970s, the Audubon Society released a tiny record player about the size of a VHS tape. It had records the size of CD mini discs that were glued to a card with a corresponding picture of a bird on it. When you slid the card into the device and flipped it on, it would play a short 30 second clip of the bird's name and the call that it made. It was pretty awesome to be honest. my grandmother had one and gave it to me when I was just a kid in the late 1980s, and I love the thing.

For some reason this made me think of these maybe 6" records that came as a bonus with something (cereal? Comics? Magazines?). They were paper thin and had to be removed from the sheet containing it (like a cutout). They played on regular machines. Any idea what I'm talking about?
Ian Colquhoun maybe Flexi discs?
Yes, that's a thing. Here's the wikipedia link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardboard_record.
They were common in the 60's. Flexible vinyl bound into magazines and advertisements, the diameter of a 45, but with a small spindle hole.
Yeha I had some of them - they used to come free with some music mag I bought every week or month. I remember one was by squeeze in green vinyl, and another was edwin starr on red vinyl. they sounded awful lol, and they wore out real quick, but they were free :)
Yes, i remember vaguely those cardboard records, i seem to recall that they had a thin layer of transparent plastic on the side with the groove, such that the groove was embedded in the plastic.

Techmoan: I absolutely love your videos! I wish I could say the same for a huge percentage of other RUclips channels.
What I mean by that is it seems to me the easy majority of top RUclips channels content has to do with subject matter that tends to dumb its viewers down. It’s the same crappy reality TV but on the internet.
But here at Techmoan I always learn something new. And even if it is frivolous new information, at least I learned something new! There's one in pink and black on ebay... ebay.to/2CfB8Q0 apparently there was a range. It will be fun to watch the --very few-- ebay auctions on these to see how the "Techmoan effect" works on something this obscure.
Also, this format has it's own facebook fan page bit.ly/2CiKWcd
As i began watching this video, i had a very similar thoguht: Just as you think you've seen it all, along comes another Techmoan video to dispel that notion. ;) It's just such a great, entertaining channel.
I am thinking you could easily wire the speaker to a line out on that little record player.
This was definitely ahead of its time. If Bandai had tried this, just a couple of years ago, it probably would be a smash hit especially with hipsters.
Come on man. The 8-Bit Guy cracks open the device and adds a line out jack if there isn't one. ;-)
This was such an entertaining video! Thanks for uploading!
This should be called a CVD (Compact Vinyl Disc)
Pull an 8-Bit Guy and install a line out jack like he does on his keyboards!
You can play that small record on a Technics 1200 because it's a manual turntable.
If the tracking error is the same as Crosley at 11:00 mark you can re-align the cartridge because the holes of the headshell are elongated which means you can twist the cartridge. But it's much better to buy a spare headshell for that rather than re-aligning it back when playing conventional records.
Anyone got a 3D printer? Might be able to knock up an adaptor, and one for the record's centre hole while you're at it.
But it's not the hole, it's the angle of the cartridge which is not straight. I think conical stylus solves the problem because conical is not sensitive to alignment.
Thanks for this slice of whimsy. All my music is on vinyl, this thing looks like a delight to play about with.
In addition, this Bandai 8Ban can also play Philco/Ford Hip-Pocket 45 RPM records from 1967 through 1969.
AHHHH! You killed me by destroying those stickers!
