    Excellent comparison of the three versions! It’s interesting how in some cases the genesis version looked almost exactly like the arcade and in others the supergrafx did the same but neither were identical. Musically I think the genesis version sounded richer and fuller albeit sometimes slower tempo. Love this. Btw the player was amazing!

    What a fantastic comparo just found this. The PCB will clearly be best but it was cool to see how close the SuperGrafx mimics the arcade color palette and overall look of the game, even if
    you can tell things had to be cut out or effects removed like the fire on the second level. Great work and good gameplay. You've got a subscriber.

  • @AllCoolThingsStoneMountain
    @AllCoolThingsStoneMountain 7 лет назад +8

    A lot of the details was a subjective choice on colour palette, but If you look closely, you can see that the SuperGrafx version uses better system effects, like the trees blowing in the wind. Rather than animating sprites like the Genesis/Megadrive, the SuperGrafx actually warps and bends the whole sprite of each tree. 'Pretty awesome display of power!
    While I preferred SEGA's choice of colours most of the times, I could see that NEC's choices were for clarity sake, and it paid off almost half the time.
    SuperGrafx FTW, IMO, but both versions were excellent!

    • @theodorosgiannopoulos6378
      @theodorosgiannopoulos6378 6 лет назад +2

      This is something I was going to mention too. The SuperGrafx version is the only one with real-time warping on the trees... The other versions, (including the arcade and X68000) use frames to animate the trees. In terms of colour, sometimes the MD version matches the arcade and sometimes it's the SGX that does... in many cases, developers like to make such changes. A nice touch in the MD version is that it allows diagonal jumps - it's good to be able to select between the arcade and MD control schemes, depending on what suits you best. Overall, the SGX version is noticeably superior - better visuals, audio and even gameplay - the MD version from what I recall playing on real hardware also had some slowdown, while the SGX version is more fluid as is the case with most PCE games, regardless of how intense the action gets. I haven't played the SGX version on real hardware (yet), but I'm sure there is zero to next-to-zero difference in performance compared to a good emulator.

    Honestly the home versions are pretty close all things considered. The Supergrafx edges out the Mega Drive a bit in terms of graphics and animation, as to be expected since it came out a year later and on a bigger rom size, but there are a few poor color choices (the grass and Arthur himself), and the HUD is positioned oddly in comparison. Also the wind blowing the trees looks much better on the Supergrafx version, which uses real-time warping.
    As far as sound goes, the music is a matter of preference. The Mega Drive has closer sound hardware to the arcade original, but the Supergrafx has unique sound hardware that is utilized rather well for this game, and both sound really nice as a result. The Mega Drive version has better sounds effects, though, and that's where the Supergrafx fares poorly. All the sound effects sound like static, almost as if this were on a Sega Mark III/Master System.
    I can't say if there's any real gameplay differences here, since I haven't played the Supergrafx version. I'm assuming they're pretty comparable, but usually the Mega Drive has the win there. I'll rule that as a no contest since I haven't played both to judge them fairly.
    I think the Supergrafx version definitely has closer graphics and animation to the arcade, but given the later release date and larger rom size, it should have been much better. For being released a year earlier, and on a smaller rom size, the Mega Drive version really isn't _much_ worse in graphics, and does have a few better color choices and superior sound effects, so it's really just splitting hairs.

    • @camulodunon
      @camulodunon 2 года назад +1

      @@tskraj3190 The sound chip that Capcom used in their arcade boards at the time is actually very similar to the one used in the Genesis though. In fact you can literally interchange FM instrument files between the two systems. And the Genesis version generally does sound closer to the arcade version in terms of music, especially the bass. By what your saying, you could also say that the arcade music sounds awful. And also, the arcade version has perhaps the most disgusting fart noise FM has ever produced for when you kill enemies. The Genesis port gets rid of that sound.

    An eternal argument here, the PC Engine Supergrafx might be better of the 2 and I think at heart it's still an 8 bit machine but with souped up hardware that allowed it to do an brilliant conversion but the Megadrive version was the very 1st of it's type released a year after the original arcade game! Developed in-house by SEGA?! Could you even imagine the pressure they were under at that time to get out a competent version?! I think they did very well with what little time they had to work with in general also the MD version was heavily favoured by the general public at the time and fondly remembered by alot of gamers as well to this day. It was the most accessible version as well while the NEC version is much more rare and harder to come by at that time and probably even now?! I guess for me my version was the SMS 8 bitter because it was the version I played via 1990 and clocked at the time, I also appreciated it's unique RPG-like armour upgrade system that is only unique to that version!!! Each to their own and appreciate what a great game Ghouls 'N Ghost is.....

      I have to point this out because this is absurd; "I think at heart it's still an 8 bit machine but with souped up hardware". What else would it be? Do you honestly think if it had a 16bit processor that ANYTHING would change? The processor in these systems, pretty but just runs game logic. That's why they have all this "souped up hardware", so the processor doesn't have to do anything. Have you ever seen an Atari ST? 8mhz, 16bit, and it can't even compete with the SMS! Secondly, bits doesn't mean shit. It's about performance. The 65x that the PCE "souped up", is just as fast as the 16bit cpu in the Genesis.. for games. The SMS z80 has a 4bit ALU.. you really think it being "4bit processor" has anything to do with performance? smh

    The arcade version is clearly the most advanced but then that is to be expected. The PC Engine was the clear winner on the ports. It had so much more graphics detail. The sprites were way more detailed and there was lots of added objects more background detail more colour and I even preferred the sound. I was quite amazing how much better it was than the MegaDrive.

    time is money and Sega who haved made the port doing it in very
    speed time ! Less One year after the coming out of the Arcade Release,
    so to gain time, they dont spend time about detail ... They focus on the
    gameplay to deliver the exact gameplay of Arcade for a port who coming
    out less One year after arcade release ... in SFX, they have more time
    to polish the game ... that's all ... Just a question of time. Sega at
    the Launch of their MD, have not the support of all developper and is
    made doing thing by itself, quickly at the debut of the MD with team with just 4-5 people ... so ... but games come quickly in MD with gameplay seems look like equal to the arcade so the port was very good ! Port on PCE or SFX have just more time to develop and was release 2-3 or more after the arcade release ....

      Not at all. The Supergrafx is a different console which was released 2 years later, in 1989 (thus 1 year after the Mega Drive which was released in 1988) and cost twice as much as a regular PC Engine (thus twice as much expensive as a Mega Drive too).
      Also the Supergrafx version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts was released 1 year after the Mega Drive one, and on twice the cart size, so overall the Supergrafx hardly impresses and actually rather fails, which is what happened.

      Despite that the Supergrafx was released 1 year after the Mega Drive and that it was much more expensive (the system and the games), it still not better than Sega's console. The Supergrafx has more on-screen colors but the Mega Drive has a better CPU, better sound setup and also better connectivity (2 controllers ports and RGB out of the box). Also apparently the Mega Drive can do some things that the PC Engine or Supergrafx can't such as columns scrollings or tilting effects.
      This is mostly why the Supergrafx failed, it wasn't worth the extra money, especially for those who already bought a PC Engine.

Also the Megadrive version was an an early in the Megadrive's life. If you want to play the arcade version, Saturn Generation is probably the best version out there followed by the PS2 Compilations released in the US. The Saturn version outputs in its native resolution so from a purist standpoint it is probably the best next to the arcade or X68000 versions which was pixel perfect.

    Draw! Supergrafx has more visual details but Mega Drive has nicer colors and better sound. 1:31 Arthur on Supergrafx looks washed-out lol, also the grass looks so fake...
    A few more things: the Mega Drive version was released earlier and on a smaller cart (5 meg vs 8 meg for the Supergrafx version) which explains why it has less graphic details. Also the Mega Drive version has better controls (it fixes the diagonal bug of the arcade version which also occurs on Supergrafx) and 2 players option (alternating of course).
    Also it must be precised that a Supergrafx cost 39,800 yens back then while still not being better than a Mega Drive which only cost 21,000 yens! Quite astonishing mmh? I wonder what NEC were thinking... Even the games were more expensive than Mega Drive (or SNES) counterparts...

      It can vary, most would agree the sound on the SuperGrafx isn't as punchy as the Genesis/MegaDrive could handle. Both ports handle the sprites very well for the characters, they're very closely perfect, but it's the MegaDrive port that bring it down with the simpler backgrounds and textures used. It seems they put more effort into the music and sprites than on the background elements.

    SuperGrafx = 1989 hardware that cost 39,800 yens (and the games cost approx. $100 each).
    Mega Drive = 1988 hardware that cost 21,000 yens (and the games cost approx. $50 each).
    Yet the Mega Drive still seems to be the more powerful system overall with games that seem like next gen such as Thunder Force IV, Streets of Rage 2, Kawasaki Superbikes, Alien Soldier, Batman & Robin or the Sonic series. Even the canceled SuperGrafx version of Strider seemed like a far cry from the impressive Mega Drive port (since the basis of said SuperGrafx version was eventually used for the PC Engine CD Arcade Card version that still pales compared to the Mega Drive port).
    It's crazy when you take all of this into consideration! Major props to Sega for releasing such a beast of a console for such an affordable price.
    But given some comments here, some people are still too salty to acknowledge those things...
    BTW°1: Ghouls 'n Ghost is slightly better on SuperGrafx *only because it was released one year later and on a bigger cart* (8 meg versus 5 for the Mega Drive version). In short, the SuperGrafx port has more graphic and animation details whereas the Mega Drive port has nicer colors, better sound, better controls and 1 or 2 player option (in fact, I prefer the Mega Drive port which feels more unique but objectively the SuperGrafx port is probably better but I still need to dig this a bit...).
    BTW°2: whatever some spec sheets are claiming, most PC Engine and SuperGrafx games run only in a resolution of 256x224 pixels whereas most Mega Drive games run in 320x224 pixels and with usually more complex visuals and richer sound.

      First it's not 256x224 but 256x240 .
      You speak of resolutions all the time, and when the PCE or SGX games have a better resolution than MD, you take the stupid fact that the majority of games are 256 pixels wide without any knowledge why they used this resolution ..
      Games like forgotten worlds or GnG have a better resolution than Md, and it's a fact,even if you don't like .
      Speaking of more details, or better sound for md games shows that you really don't know the PCE's library .
      2nd: speaking of price is really funny, you must see those old magazines and see the real price, Gng for exemple, was more expansive on Md than the SGX one.
      3st: Better control on MD ?? mouhahah, i'll add that the Md's hitboxes are totaly shitty and far from the arcade and SGX ones which are identical .
      As usualy, stupid comments from a stupid guy,because they are only here by "fanboyism" and nothing else, and i add parallax crase and yohko M in the group .

    The original in CPS1 is unmatched in wealth of detail, but the PC Engine version gets very close in several stages of the game. Mega Drive has the poorest port by the low capacity in simultaneous colors of the system, its biggest weakness. This implies a lower graphic detail by fewer color distribution mainly by the background. Mega Drive also falls short of the smallest number of parallax plans used by the game. But it is important to note that the title was released for numerous systems, including the 8-bit ones. And while it uses such cpus, NEC hardware is much more robust, especially by the use of CD ROM that allows a wide use of memory for access to larger color palette. Despite this, the 4th generation home versions are well balanced and closely resemble the arcade.

  • @stephenqueen1122
    @stephenqueen1122 7 лет назад +8

    Mega Drive better sound and colors. Also better HUD (the one at the bottom, on Supergrafx it overlays the player's sprite).
    Supergrafx has more graphic details later on (especially during the second part of the first stage).
    I would say draw, but given the fact that the Supergrafx and its games were much more expensive than Mega Drive stuff and for hardly any reasons, Mega Drive wins.
    Also it's much easier to find a Mega Drive and a copy of the game (a friend has a Supergrafx with Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Granzort but I don't even like the look of the system to begin with and it's even worse when hooked with a Super CD-Rom unit... Also still only one controller port... Definitely a case of "what were they thinking?").

    • @yohkom.7988
      @yohkom.7988 7 лет назад

      The weirdest excuses?! The fact that the Supergrafx and its games were twice as expensive is an excuse? Also Stephen Queen is right about the bottom HUD which is better positioned on Mega Drive and also looks more like the arcade.
      Colors and sound is rather a matter of taste though the Mega Drive sounds like a 16-bit while the Supergrafx sounds rather like beefed up 8-bit (same problem (maybe even worse) with the Supergrafx port of 1941 Counter Attack).
      But the Supergrafx version has a noticeable advantage in graphics details mostly thanks to the bigger cart size (8 meg vs 5 meg for the Mega Drive port).
      On other hand the Mega Drive port has more options, with 2 players alternating turns and an option to remove the diagonal bug which occurs in the arcade and Supergrafx versions. Also the Mega Drive soundtrack is awesome, with some reworked parts, a nice alternative to the arcade music.
      So overall both good ports, the Supergrafx version is slightly closer to the arcade while the Mega Drive version is more unique which makes it more interesting IMO (since nowadays you can easily access to the arcade version).

      Yohko M. this is a comparison video, and i feel to be judged on visuals, performance, sound. The sega version is certainly not a bad version and in a lot of ways a mostly faithfull port of the arcade, but when it comes to technical perks its the supergrafx who has the upperhand between both consoles. Arcade is the best as usual. For fans of the game, probably any version would do and i guess it would be interesting to see how they compare gameplay wise.

Talking like,' oh i like the hud better on my console' or 'but the game is better on my system cos it is cheaper ' thats exactly what i meant with excuses. Presentation: TurboGraphix16 (More details + increased use of parallax scrolling)
    Genesis wins.

      Wow you sound like a Sega Fanboy. The NEC Super GrafX 16 Version was way better in every aspect. The colors, graphics and sound were terrible on the Genesis/Mega Drive Version but that's to be expected since the Genesis/Mega Drive could only display 61 Colors out of it's 9-Bit 256 color palette. The TG16 and SG16 displayed 448 colors out of their 9-Bit 512 color palette.

      @Sir AZ It's not 512 colors. It's two identical 9-Bit 256 color palletes.Only 256 colors are usable while the other identical colors are used for color flickering which gives the illusion of shading. The Turbo GraFX 16 had a 512 color pallete which is why the colors looked so much better on the PC Engine/Turbo GraFX 16 than the Genesis/Mega Drive.

      @Sir AZ That is stated in every Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Spec sheet. It's just a brand, don't cry because it was an overrated pile of shit. I know you could probably use a hug right now but I'm unable to give you one. Cheer up uneducated friend.

    A port to challenge these is coming to Amiga 500 OCS chipset. Just look in this link, Amiga guys are sizing it up now and many say it looks possible and will be done to arcade standard. eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=87502
    Amiga should be able to at least equal what we see from Megadrive Genesis

      Except that the official Mega Drive port barely pushes the system ;)
      It's an early release, 9 months after the Mega Drive launch, in august 1989 and uses a small cart of 5 meg. So it's easy to imagine all the improvements that a later port using something like a 8 or 16 meg cart could allow!
      In other words:
      Hypothetic Mega Drive port which musters most of the hardware and cart ressources > official Mega Drive port/hypothetic Amiga port which musters most of the hardware and disk ressources > official Amiga port
      But I'm still very curious about this new attempt at an Amiga port! The frame rate and controls in particular. Also the sound.

      Since we're at it, I wonder if the Amiga is able to handle Mega Drive games such as Sonic 2 or Streets of Rage 2. Certainly not but it would be interesting to see how close the Amiga can be though Streets of Rage 2 would be a problem with the limited amount of action buttons on Amiga controllers (2 buttons is the maximum with Amiga controllers isn't it?).

    • @miggy4eva980

      Amiga could easily handle Sonic 2 or Streets of Rage with the right programmers who truly care about the Amiga. At silky smooth 60fps. The Amiga was far ahead of its time, don't like tehe 4yr age difference fool you, at certain things the Amiga can destroy the Megadrive, and it will equal it everywhere else. Just look at Lionheart, SOTA demo, SOTB game, Ambermoon, and many others. With its copper, blitter and advanced chipset it can do mode seven modes and is more comparable to SNES than Megadrive.
      The Amiga has a keyboard if the controller buttons aren't enough, more input options than the megadrive could dream of.

      No Amiga games reaches the level of Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Thunder Force III (let alone Thunder Force IV), Alien Soldier and many others Mega Drive games.
      Lionheart is impressive by Amiga standards but:
      - it's slow
      - it runs in a tiny, actual resolution of 280x208 pixels
      - the main sprite looks kinda poor
      - it has few sound effects...
      You're simply overrating the Amiga :D sure it's a great computer for its time but the Mega Drive (which btw was released 3 years after the Amiga not 4) and SNES are still better gaming systems.
      Also a keyboard? lol, great ergonomics compared to 3 or 6 buttons controllers!

    Wasn't the Genesis suppose to be better and more powerful? Why does the PC Engine look so good?...Almost as good as the SNES Super Ghouls n Ghosts. PCE wins this one easy.

      Because it's a supergrafx game, it's a pcengine on redbull ;-)

      PC Engine wins by graphical detail closer to the arcade but sound wise Genesis does a better job as both the SG and Arcade use a similar Yamaha sound chip

    • @TOUKOretrotaku
      @TOUKOretrotaku 5 лет назад

      the resolution is higher on the SGX version, more colors, and more stuffs on screen,and for sound it's a matter of taste, i prefer the PCE here too .

      The Supergrafx was released 1 year later and cost 39,800 yens
      The Mega Drive only cost 21,000 yens
      Yet the Mega Drive is indeed more powerful. Check out Red Zone, Alien Soldier or Batman & Robin, they look next gen compared to this.
      Ghouls 'n Ghost is slightly better on SuperGrafx because it was released later and on a bigger cart (8 meg vs 5 for the MD version). Also it costs twice as much as the MD version! ($100 vs 50). Go figure.

      @@Ryuujin1078 yes and also Mega Drive version has better colors, better sound and 1 or 2 player options. Also more faithful HUD and some better details (Arthur for instance, it has its eyes that go the wrong direction on Supergrafx...)

    While Genesis has better graphics and sprites, supergrafx has more detail and animations with enemies. Arcade is king.
