What I appreciate is you thoroughly use the gear you have and you produce incredible content from them. Many people seem to have all the different cameras but don't actually do much with them, just review them.
I love your video. I own pretty much the same setup. Also I like that you're not all over the place and energetic like Mr. McKinnon. Very trustworthy. Keep it up
I just purchased my a6500 a few weeks ago and my lenses & crane are on its way! I'm really thankful for the videos you're making - it really validates my investment in this equipment! Keep these videos coming! I'm learning so much!
Man, I'm happy to see the first three lenses you present are exactly the ones I have bought and use. And I love them, love the 35 mm the most, pictures are awesome. And the 18-105 mm is better than I thought it'd be, love the fact that it doesn't change length when zooming, it's perfect on a gimbal.
A non-douchey intro non-overproduced music track, short and sweet straight to the point no annoying “smash that like button and subscribe.” Just straight useful info! Thank you thank you!! Subscribed!
Since I bought the EP Z 18 - 105, I rarely use anything else. I'm more interested in capturing the moment than the technical aspect, but this lens hasn't disappointed me in anyway. Thx for posting!
I love this style of video, not overly edited you just sat down and dumped a load of professional wisdom on us and included all the example shots of of what you were talking about, I'm so tired of the distracting video editing style of new youtubers. Anyway thanks for taking the time and effort to teach us stuff!
What I like about that guy is the down to earth delivery and learning from a guy who is a pro, not another youtubers filming his wife and dogs and who's tried the camera/lenses a few weeks...
One day I hope to get the a6500, but for now I'm sticking with the a6000, due to budget. It does everything I need it to. I don't use a lot of the natural audio in my shoots as well, so the need for an external mic isn't really there yet. I have found the cheap Sony shotgun mic through my hot shoe works great to cut out that hum from the onboard mic. My work is mainly watched on mobile or RUclips so I don't see the need for 4K other than using it for cropping in. I have the Sony 50mm 1.8 / Sony 35mm 1.8 and for the shoots I do they are perfect. Can't wait for tax time to purchase the 18-105 G lens. I purchased the Zhiyun Crane after following you and being pretty inspired. I love having a small backpack with minimal gear and plenty of spare batteries to get me through the adventures. Thanks for all your help man, its pretty refreshing watching your videos and getting honest, raw feedback to actually help people.
a6000 still does pretty darn good 1080p. Although the a6300 / a6500 have 4K and picture profiles. if you even do get an a6500 I also agree with using the color Pro for Sony profiles from EOSHD. Really helps remove the nasty green colors that Sony cameras are known for.
Brandon, thanks a lot for making this video available to anyone who is interested. It was extremely helpful in many ways to a rookie filmmaker like me.
Love your work Brandon! Definitely shows how you don't need a $10,000 camera setup to get amazing looking footage. If you feel like adding another lens to your set, I'd really recommend the Sony Zeiss 24mm f1.8. I have it with my a6300 and it's a great 35mm equivalent lens and allows for nice shallow depth of field. Little pricey but if you buy it used it's definitely worth it.
You are amazing! You say exactly what comes with experience and most of people find out after spending a lot of money in things we don't even use. Thank you!!
I go pretty much with the same kind of gear and shooting style but use a Fuji XT-2 with the stabilized Zoom lenses. They work on the gimbal and I am super happy with the results.
I use a very similar kit for my job. May I suggest one more thing that recently released which is a monitor called SmallHD Focus. Its light, cheap, almost no delay, and helps us see better outdoors so we can get the right exposure. Also, its very light compared to the others out there. Hope you try it :)
Thank you so much for posting your kit. I've had a Nex5-n, a6000 and just ordered a a6500. Your kit is what I'd like to have. I've been thinking about the 35mm for awhile now and your description of it has made me want to purchase it. Thanks again!
Nice work Brandon! Your doing a great job explaining this all. I've been shooting since 2002 professionally and can say you have done more in explaining things to the new shooter than most others I've seen. Wishing you continued success with the future segments. Oh and yes I own most of what you suggest 😊
I have a Sony A6300, 16-50 & 18-55 kits + 18-105 f4 + 50 f1.8 + sigma 30 f2.8, viriable ND & PL filters, the zhiyun crane plus gimbal, a rode video mic rycote with a boom pole which I use with a Tascam dr-05, a yn360s light, a green screen 3x4m, a budget but really good tripod, a more cheap and old one... That's all I think. DO I NEED MORE??? I DON'T THINK SO. Maybe some more lights and stands and shit.
Good stuff Brandon! Just wanted to clarify that the a6500 does come with a Mic input (Got mine back in April and been using a Rode mic with no issues). What Brandon refers to (I believe) is a headphone jack (in fairness he did say headphone jack) to hear what's coming into the camera through the mic :)
My "cheap" choice: - a6300 + kit-lens (because is just 100 bucks more) - Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary (I love it) - Sony 10-18mm f4 (I bought it because you recommended it in another video) - Zhiyun crane M ( 200 bucks cheaper, small, lighter, up to 12 hours battery life Can hold up smartphone, gopro, and a6300, even a little sigma's Overweight 15g) === My next lens will be === Sony EF 85mm f1.8 (because I intend to invest in a FF later) === for audio === - zoom h1 + lav ===================================== Brandon Li, do you have 85mm? What do you think of it?
do you use ur kit lens often? I'm on very limited budget and thinking to just buy only the sony 35mm 1.4 lens. So ill be using 35mm 1.4 + my kit lens for my travel kit.
You really hit me with that video! I use a A6500 (with zoom kit lens and a 16mm prime from Sigma) and am very thankfull for some really interesting suggestions regarding my gear ;)
I rock an a6300 with the 18-105mm and the 30mm. The 18-105mm is great because Of it being wide compared to my 30mm. It works great on my Zhiyun Crane v2. The manual focus works pretty well but autofocus is really no issue on the a6300. My 30mm is nice because it also can be used for portraits and is incredibly sharp in both video and photo. Highly recommend these two lense.
Thanks man this was unbelievably helpful and my plan is to buy basically this entire kit before my trip to Nepal next year. Thanks for the tips, every video I've seen from you has given me a ton of new and useful knowledge and the way you present the information is perfect for me👍🏽👍🏽
Hey man! I love your channel! I am a total noob when it comes to videography and I really appreciate the helpful explanations as well as recommendations for beginners. I had not considered the sony a6300 over the a6500 but now I totally am for price reasons. "APPREESH."
So lucky that I got this video by youtube recommendation. Kudos to you Sir. Fantastic guide. Probably the best I've seen so far, regarding Sony mirrorless and a variety of videographer's gear. Thank you. Keep up the quality work.
thank you for your great videos. Always straight to the point without unnecessary blah blah blah. However I have some comments I think you will agree. The 18-105 is a GREAT lens. No doubt. Best video lens for sony a6xxxx series ever. The sony 35mm f 1.8 (and the 50mm f 1.8) although it is the best budget choice for lowlight however it has some drawbacks. AF is great in daylight but at night the performance of AF decreased. Moreover, it is almost impossible to use the manual focus (ring) of these lenses (35 and 50mmm) becouse the "focus distance" is toooooooo large (you have to turn the ring at least 1 full round or more to focus). This make these lenses almost useless for handheld manual focusing. Generally speaking I agree with all you have said here. I have a very similar equipment. Instead of Sony mic, I prefer to use the old (but good) Zoom H1 and as it concern the battery a cheap Aukey with a wire clamp. However it seems like all AF lenses suffer from this "too long focus distance" in ring becouse this is also the case for sigma 30mm f 1.4 (AF e mount) as well. For low light and if someone records externaly I would suggest to look at the Sigma 18-35mm with MC11 adapter. Very heavy (i know) but acceptable AF performance and good (short) manual focus distance. it alse cover the range 18-35mm with f1.8.
I still use it. Am very satisfied, despite of some minor minuses (display for example). Would be great to know when the A6700 arrives, that would be a point to be taken into consideration!
Hi Brandon, thanks for putting this together! Great info on a very popular camera. RE: audio recording, I've had great success with the new Tascam DR-10L, which is basically a headless Zoom H1 or Sony 712. My favorite feature is the safety track, meaning it will record at a normal volume, and simultaneously at -6DB in case the subject gets unexpectedly loud. It's small, unobtrusive, and the included lav mic isn't bad at all. Anyway, just my $0.02. Thanks again!
Oh my good god! I have you're exact kit that you listed in you're description... Literally everything identical!! Minus the 18-105mm E is the only thing I don't have but hey! You're right man the Zhiyun Crane with the 6500/6300 with that 10-18 F4 or the 35 F1.8 is just a killer set up!! I even mount the rode mic on top when using the gimbal once in a while cause you know.. what the hell lol
One change , get the 18-105mm G (which you recommended in the video) and the 16mm sigma 1.4. Best compact Gimbal for sony aps-c currently is the weebill lab s.
You produce some excellent content and so easy to understand. MOST content producers doing this sort of content want to SCREAM and their videos look like car chases on steroids. Keep up the good work, you are miles ahead of the others!!!
Great video. I agree on the 10-18 and 18-105. I have both lenses. I own the Sony a6000. I mainly take still photos. Is it worth it to upgrade to the A6500?
Hey Brandon, I put my a7S with 24-240 on the Zhiyun crane and it works fine (up to 70mm, 240 puts it way off balance). It also kind of works with the rokinon 35 T1.5, but there are microjitters, so I would not recommend it.
I need that circular polarizer filter for my 18-105! I also changed my mind about buying 50mm 1,8 after seeing your footage, 35mm 1,8 will be better choice! Thanks Brandon!
I bought the Sony 28mm 2.0 on your recommendation and I shoot with that thing almost exclusively. Such a versatile lens! I bought the 18-105, but I find the images ridiculously soft..unusable, really...at either end. Maybe I got a bad one. The Zhiyun crane MAKES the kit.
For anyone considering the a6300, I can't recommend it enough, it's a fantastic camera. I'm using the 35mm and 10-18mm, can't use the 18-105mm for now as I have the Crane M. Still debating the upgrade to the regular Crane as mine is definitely on it's limit, at extreme angles it get's a little shaky with the 10-18.
Thanks, the program is great for me, a good path. After seeing this video i may just hold on to my RX10-2. headphone jack is a keeper in this instance.
How do you not have a million plus subscribers?... Your footage is straight up mad !!! Awesome shots and awesome info..will be following you work...its crazy good !!!
Hi Brandon, could you make a video about how budget filmmakers could focus when using a dslr handheld/tripod for videos? I know many people invest in equipments to pull focus, use steadycams and such but it would be great if you could tell us how to do without advanced gears. And also explain some techniques that can be used to keep subjects focused? Thanks!
Thanks for a good video as usual. For someone who would be doing both stills and video, the A6500 seems to be a better choice because of the extra buffer it has. You will definitely need it for sports photography
Thank you so much for that video...I was just think about what lenses to get next and what I could need/try out for my camra...thanks a lot for all of the tips 🔥🙌
Zhiyun Crane team should definitely make you some sort of brand ambassador haha if they haven't already. I bought one recently, inspired by you, and every cent was so worth it I'm quite sure many other people got to know and purchase this gimbal after watching your videos too.
So comprehensive and informative. Thanks a lot. Also, thinking of getting the Small HD Focus as an on camera monitor for bright daylight shooting when the A6500s lcd really doesn't perform so well. Plus if you shoot in log profiles you can overlay LUTs to get a better idea of what your final image will be. And it has audio monitoring and input and output audio jacks (plus loads of other features)
Hey Brandon I noticed in some clips of this video looks like you went to Mt. Washington and Strathcona park/trails in Vancouver Island, BC because I recognize those trails and the bridge on the trail.
Thanks Brandon great information - I'm thinking of getting the A6500 with a speedbooster to use my faster Nikon lenses and use the SmallHD Focus to help with manual focusing.
hi Brandon, you might want to include some good power bank in your gear. I suggest PowerCore 20.000 mAh. it has smart fast charging and great capacity, you can charge your devices/batteries in your backpack while moving...
Absolutely incredible… Enjoy your videos you’re very informative very helpful and will continue watching them as long as you’re on RUclips… Thank you much
Amazing video as always. I think a monitor is nice too because the a6500 screen is unusable outside in bright daylight. I'm hoping to get the SmallHD Focus soon (backorder) to solve that problem. Only problem is that its fairly expensive, but there are lots of other options too.
Thank you! Got my a6500 a couple months ago with a 19mm lens - I'm just beginning my photography journey and think I chose the perfect lens for that. But I'm def going for that 35mm next.
Hi Brandon - thanks for replying. I should've specified it's the Sigma 19mm. The salesperson recommended it at B&H and I've been really happy with it as a pure beginner.
Great video! Thank you. My research and instinct have brought me to the same conclusions your experience has brought you. It is great to hear the confirmation before spending (for me) that much money!
Instead of buying the Sony A6500 I used my money to build a time machine. Now I own the Sony A7S CXXIV. Couldn't be happier!
But who needs 50k resolution when most people can't even stream 40k
Juan Quispe what camera is this ? i couldn't find it in the internet
Yet ;)
it has a downscale mode.
LOL...
This is my favorite channel on RUclips. The pacing of your videos is awesome and you seem to fit so much good information into such short videos.
The channel that has no BS, all good information. No unnecessary brolls. Gotta love Brandon!
Holy shit I have the a6500, 18-105f4, 35f1.8, rode mic go... I just need to get out shooting now! No excuses
good luck brother !
common guys!😄
Man, I'm happy to see the first three lenses you present are exactly the ones I have bought and use. And I love them, love the 35 mm the most, pictures are awesome. And the 18-105 mm is better than I thought it'd be, love the fact that it doesn't change length when zooming, it's perfect on a gimbal.
Got the a6500 , crane, and 35mm so far ! Really glad you went into the filters a bit
A non-douchey intro non-overproduced music track, short and sweet straight to the point no annoying “smash that like button and subscribe.” Just straight useful info! Thank you thank you!! Subscribed!
Went from Canon to this camera. Never looked back! Love it!
I can't tell you how much you help me improve! Thank you so much 😊
Since I bought the EP Z 18 - 105, I rarely use anything else. I'm more interested in capturing the moment than the technical aspect, but this lens hasn't disappointed me in anyway. Thx for posting!
Good to hear it!
Subbed because you get straight to the point. You don't ramble on about your life for 5 minutes before getting into the content. Very nice.
I followed this guide when buying my first filmmaking kit and I fully recommend it. It’s everything you would need in most situations
Great vid! Follow Roll on ZC can be achieved by attaching the camera 90 degrees. Then use the tilt to make the roll happen as all axis are shifted.
Just bought the 6300 and this video helps me alot, thanks!
This is excellent. I really like your straight to the point no bs style.
3 minutes watching this video was enough to make me subscribe. Great video, very informative.
Thanks for the feedback Jay, appreciate it
The flow of presentation is amazing. Lots of information to absorb in such a short duration. Thanks.
Thank you!!
I will always use your affiliate links to buy my gears to support this channel. Please keep up the good work and share the knowledge.
I go pretty much with the same kind of gear and shooting style but use a Fuji XT-2 with the stabilized Zoom lenses. They work on the gimbal and I am super happy with the results.
good one. concise and practical for single camera travelers.
Love to hear more about the S&Q modes compared to the more expensive Sony cameras like the A7s2 and the FS5.
I use a very similar kit for my job. May I suggest one more thing that recently released which is a monitor called SmallHD Focus. Its light, cheap, almost no delay, and helps us see better outdoors so we can get the right exposure. Also, its very light compared to the others out there. Hope you try it :)
Hey man just wanna say Thank you for taking the time to make this
This video is what directed my gear purchases when i first started filmmaking. Thanks, pal
Love my a6500, own the 28mm 2.0, 10-18, and Canon 24-70 2.8
Thank you so much for posting your kit. I've had a Nex5-n, a6000 and just ordered a a6500. Your kit is what I'd like to have. I've been thinking about the 35mm for awhile now and your description of it has made me want to purchase it. Thanks again!
Probably the best video I've seen so far about the Sony a6300, thanks

I've been shooting since 2002 professionally and can say you have done more in explaining things to the new shooter than most others I've seen. Wishing you continued success with the future segments. Oh and yes I own most of what you suggest 😊
Just picked up the a6300 and loving it.
Fantastic video. Definitely going for the A6300 after your advice.
Did u buy it?
I have a Sony A6300, 16-50 & 18-55 kits + 18-105 f4 + 50 f1.8 + sigma 30 f2.8, viriable ND & PL filters, the zhiyun crane plus gimbal, a rode video mic rycote with a boom pole which I use with a Tascam dr-05, a yn360s light, a green screen 3x4m, a budget but really good tripod, a more cheap and old one... That's all I think.
DO I NEED MORE??? I DON'T THINK SO. Maybe some more lights and stands and shit.
this video actually helped me put my kit together and shoot my first "cinematic film" thanks Brandon
An exceptional filmmaker and a great teacher? You're awesome man. Thank you! This was super helpful.

My "cheap" choice:
- a6300 + kit-lens (because is just 100 bucks more)
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary (I love it)
- Sony 10-18mm f4 (I bought it because you recommended it in another video)
- Zhiyun crane M ( 200 bucks cheaper, small, lighter, up to 12 hours battery life
Can hold up smartphone, gopro, and a6300, even a little sigma's Overweight 15g)
=== My next lens will be ===
Sony EF 85mm f1.8 (because I intend to invest in a FF later)
=== for audio ===
- zoom h1 + lav

Brandon Li, do you have 85mm? What do you think of it?
I have rokinon 85mm f1.4 and it's great but all-manual
rokinon is very good lens! I love my samyang 12 f2 , very sharp and cheap compared to 10-18
do you use ur kit lens often? I'm on very limited budget and thinking to just buy only the sony 35mm 1.4 lens. So ill be using 35mm 1.4 + my kit lens for my travel kit.

Love my Sony A6500 & Zhiyun Crane!!! I have the Sony 28, 35 & 50 primes & will be buying the 18-105 & 10-18mm. Amazing as always thanks Brandon.
The EOSHD colour profiles are amazing!

I'm using the 35mm and 10-18mm, can't use the 18-105mm for now as I have the Crane M. Still debating the upgrade to the regular Crane as mine is definitely on it's limit, at extreme angles it get's a little shaky with the 10-18.
Cool runthough, I bought Sony 35 1.8 and 10 - 18 because of watching your videos :)
Such a great informative video! You helped me decide on an A6500. THANK YOU!
Im your Great admirer! Watched almost most films you uploaded on youtube and Vimeo. Great motivation to me.
Really appreciate this video! A lot of the gear I have is because of your recommendations.
I just bought the filters on amazon... thank you so much 😊
Hi Brandon, could you make a video about how budget filmmakers could focus when using a dslr handheld/tripod for videos?
I bought one recently, inspired by you, and every cent was so worth it
I'm quite sure many other people got to know and purchase this gimbal after watching your videos too.
Bought the a6500 under the link you have here.. hope it works !! Along with 2 lenses you suggested !!
wish I could afford the gimbal, it looks soooo great. Thank you for the video, your tips are always helpful!
Thank you, so freaking helpful. I am saving this for later, currently saving up my money to purchase this camera and gear
Great video. Came across as honest, to the point and knowledgeable. Thanks.
Amazing content and a superb way of presenting Brandon make your channel easily the most compelling for the subject of filmmaking, thank you.
Great educational video, good clear, precise explanations. Well done!
hi Brandon, you might want to include some good power bank in your gear. I suggest PowerCore 20.000 mAh. it has smart fast charging and great capacity, you can charge your devices/batteries in your backpack while moving...
Absolutely incredible… Enjoy your videos you’re very informative very helpful and will continue watching them as long as you’re on RUclips… Thank you much
Please do more videos more often. They're great man!!! Keep up the awesome work.
Amazing video as always. I think a monitor is nice too because the a6500 screen is unusable outside in bright daylight. I'm hoping to get the SmallHD Focus soon (backorder) to solve that problem. Only problem is that its fairly expensive, but there are lots of other options too.
I want the Focus also but it's not available yet
Thank you! Got my a6500 a couple months ago with a 19mm lens - I'm just beginning my photography journey and think I chose the perfect lens for that. But I'm def going for that 35mm next.
I've never heard of a 19mm lens..which one?
Hi Brandon - thanks for replying. I should've specified it's the Sigma 19mm. The salesperson recommended it at B&H and I've been really happy with it as a pure beginner.
i will purchase some lens through ur link for support... my favorite channel...u r humble and made everything clear. great job!
Hope you liked being here in Vancouver! Great video, as always, btw.
Nice user experience content! Let me also demand same video for a7sii. Thank you.
Gur Hekim yes pleasee
Gur Hekim yes pls 🤗 cause im thinking of buying a a7sii but want to know witch lens works best for me
also you should try the v2 Zhiyun Crane - 12 hours on a charge and comes with a quick release plate.
cool
Great video! Thank you. My research and instinct have brought me to the same conclusions your experience has brought you. It is great to hear the confirmation before spending (for me) that much money!
Awesome video Brandon! Love the tips! Will be piecing together a kit for some summer short films and Europe trip in august! thanks a lot!
