It's absolutely insane to me that after everything Zenith has brought to the watchmaking world and for all of their brilliance, they really don't get the love they completely deserve
@@BarkandJack interesting. It would appear that Rolex is best in the business in terms of Branding and Marketing but what they do doesnt really connect with me. Grown up seeing the Brand in association with Wimbledon so have always known the Brand but thats as far as it goes.
ADRIAN BARKER! ON A MONDAY?! Things are getting wild and I'm loving it. Ok, to kick things off "it's absolutely boiling in Scotland" is an oxymoron. Next, this is a divine Zenith. Classic design, Zenith at its best!
Every time, I find some random watch that I really like and wants to learn more about it, you review them right about the same time that I started to wonder about that specific model! Your watch reviews are great and your taste in watch is fantastic!
Zenith is, to me, all about the heritage models. The modern stuff isn't for me, and I often forget any of those even exist. The Original 38 and the A384 define the brand for me. Glad you found it!
Dearest: because of this video, I went out and bought one. I am now the happiest woman on the planet. You were absolutely spot on. The Zenith Chronomaster Original is a jewel. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thanks Adrian! Finally some love light on the “old” Zeniths! I’ve had a great love for zenith el primero chronomaster for a while but hasn’t pulled the trigger, yet… absolutely love the story and history and must say I’m quite surprised that it doesn’t get more respect, attention and appreciation. Also, I can recommend looking at Maen Skymaster 38 for a quite similar looking piece with a GMT function on the bezel.
I felt in love with Zenith once I knew about their brand story and history. This brand is so under-rated and deserves much more love than what they are getting.
@swiftusmaximus5651 it is definitely more difficult and expensive to service. I had a vintage el primero fixed, which cost me 1/8 of the watch's value. But in the end, I think it's still worth having it, it's such a jem. Moreover, you are confident you won't get the fake deal as el primero movement is difficult to replicate.
Another charming video. Just love your enthusiasm for our passion/ hobby/ obsession. Also, I agree: that is a cool watch. Love that it has a date window. Good luck finding a way to justify buying yourself one. And again, thanks for sharing your passion for our hobby.
After getting my 36mm explorer I'm massively obsessed with sub 40mm watches. This looks class.... I've just bought a certina 38mm diver and it's brilliant
I have the 42mm non-1/10 second version and I just love it. As you mentioned, it is absolutely gorgeous. It has that jewel-like quality where it just sparkles. It is also amazingly accurate - it's been running within 0.5 seconds per day since I bought it a year ago.
My eyes have been on the Zenith Chronomaster Revival A386 Manufacture Edition. Also, in 38 mm but with subdials in different shades of blue. Very cool! Need one video on that as well 🙂 Great video as always!!
I own the tricolor version of the watch and absolutely love it. It is great with the bracelet and it works great with leather straps as well (blue being my preferred choice). The leather straps give it an additional vintage feel. However, the bracelet looks great and is really well made. For me, the watch ticks all the boxes. PS: I don’t care about the date window. While I appreciate that it may interfere with optics, I find a date application useful for everyday wear.
I fell in love with the A384 revival myself. The size, the case shape, the bracelet, and the dial details do a great job of making it more interesting than yet another Daytona/Speedmaster without tilting into the overtly retro territory of the Monaco or the Top Time watches. I think Zenith is doing a great job with their heritage reissues across the board and their new Pilot makes me think they may finally be finding a path forward that tastefully incorporates the past and present.
Both lines are so sick, I'd like to own an example of each one day. My next fancy chronograph purchase is going to be something from these guys...if the A3817 didn't use faux patina lume, it would be that one for sure, but I might end up going with the tricolor A386 and wait to see what new A384 variants get released over the next few years. They're just such fantastic looking watches.
Wow, Adrian is opening up to Zenith, good to see. It is hard to believe this went unnoticed in the Barkerverse for so long. I guess someone was too busy foaming at the mouth about the Chronomaster Sport when it came out.
I think this watch is stunning. Being fairly new to the hobby, I was at first gung ho about the Omega speedmaster. Not that I dont love the "speedy", but through my searches and reviews, the El Primero started to pop up. I was instantly drawn to the vintage look of the watch. When I learned about the history of the movement, I became excited for this watch. This will be the chrono I purchase before I buy the speedmaster.
I love it! Seem to be shorter on $$ these days so immediately go put on my Movado Datron HS360 with the Zenith El Primero movement for a fix. I could do without the date at 12, but was not a deal breaker when purchasing about ten years ago. This Zenith you are showing today is a beauty. Love the channel.
I just got a Zenith Chronomaster Original (the tri-color subdial iteration). My initial reluctance was whether I'd find 38mm too small to read as a chronograph (I don't live remotely near a Zenith authorized dealer). I went ahead and took a chance as I really like the throwback look. It is quite wearable and reasonably legible for the chronograph features.
I have this exact model, picked it up when they first released. Love it. It's my dress watch but this video has nudged me to get more wrist time with it. It really is a gorgeous watch.
If you want to check out other new/vintage chronos, take a look at Nivada Gretchen’s Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver. It’s a 1:1 recreation of a vintage Nivada.
It's good, really good. I have the blue Manufacture Edition and that one is never leaving the collection. The fact that Zenith is not such a well known brand but does have mighty impressive heritage is actually part of the brand appeal to me, it's under the radar unless you know your watches 🙂
I've tried the original 69 and it seemed to small on my fairly small 17cm wrist. The 42mm seemed to large. The dial is a stunner and I love the fact that it's a 1/10th of a second. Thanks for the reminder on this gem.
Let us imagine that you can walk into an AD and buy a Daytona ( Steel obviously ). Now lets imagine both the Zenith and Rolex cost the same money....I would take the Zenith. Stunning looking piece that falls into my 36mm to 39mm window, love it. Thanks for sharing Adrian.
I wore one of those at a watch get together about a year ago. That reverse Panda is the nicest chronograph I've ever held or worn. Your lust for it is warranted. Get one, I'd say. :)
Absolutely stunning.. Got a Type 20 'Extra Special" chrono in bronze for the same vintage feel, but this is a different vintage. This is like a classic Stingray Corvette with a resto-mod LS7 under the hood. I want it also!
Had the regular tri color version of this watch on bracelet. Almost always wore on strap but it competed for time with my speedy and felt a little small for my 7.25” wrist so I sold it but still miss it. Maybe try another model like this in future. Such a killer piece.
Love it, nothing beats a nice and subtle chronograph! I have a blancpain leman flyback chronograph at similar proportions, tho about a millimeter thinner but not with an open case back.. I absolutely love that watch, it’s the watch my father got for himself when I was a toddler and I was immediately drawn to it.. couldn’t wish for a nicer timepiece.
Lovely looking watch that. On the lower price mark, I would recommend the Longines Avigation big eye, stunning piece. Just got one for a big birthday as an everyday piece and it’s super super nice
Wasn't the Seiko 6139 Speed Timer the first Automatic Chronograph Movement? It came out in May of 1969 and Zenith and the other Consortium of companies released theirs late in 1969?
Yep...beat me to the punch in pointing this out. (Have a 6139 myself.) Nonetheless, I've always loved the El Primero for its unique attributes, and this particular watch would also be my favorite to house this movement.
The Seiko was the first to go on sale to the public. The El Primero was the first to be displayed at a watch show - January 1969 I believe. It was also in development the longest which explains why they called it ‘the first’. Must have been a bit embarrassing when Seiko beat them to market. The Heuer/Breitling/Buren calibre 11 also came out sometime that year.
I sourced a chronomaster sport triple calendar with moon phase a number of years back ( full box/papers) and absolutely love it. Amazing the features packed into such a graceful and slender watch and beautiful design and finish. Just doesnt get much wrist time as i regard it as a fairly delicate dress watch. Need to realign my thinking !!
I absolutely love this and it’s currently on my radar for a pick up at some point - it’s beautiful !!! My head has been turned by the WOSG limited edition version which is also a stunner 😍
I don't personally know any other watch enthusiasts (yet), but a JLC or Zenith on the wrist would be a clear indicator that I'm in the presence of someone who knows what he or she is doing!
I love mine, it’s a stunner, and part of my regular rotation. I have one issue that you didn’t mention, that I’ve never experienced with any other watch… it’s probably a non issue for most people if you don’t wear a watch while you sleep… but the lugs have such a sharp point at the end, when i started wearing this watch, i started getting holes in my bed sheets (all of them), and i realized the lugs were slicing into my sheets if i toss and turn at night… it took me two or three bedsheets before i realized what was going on! Still an incredible watch, but just don’t wear it to sleep if you value your sheets…. The cuts are 2 or 3 inches long, seriously. I haven’t changed the strap to an undersized nato or anything, it’s the stock strap.
Great video, great watch. Another Chrono that I would recommend, but is very different, is the Glashutte seventies Chrono panorama date. I have one and love it
Love this watch, love Zenith watches. If I were to buy a chronograph, Zenith would be my choice. Great looking, easy to read, a functional tool for everyday use, for me.
Stunning piece all way around, seriously gorgeous ,I can forgive the date on the 4 o'clock ,just love it, you right Adrian, a has Vintage vibe,% 99 almost perfect dimensions everything spot on, thanks for sharing the love affair with this beautiful Zenith....until next time ❤✌️all way from St George Utah.
Great review Adrian. Totally agree beautiful watch. You and I back a couple of years didn't agree on the Chronomaster Sport looking like a Daytona. Oh well lets move on.😁
I fully understand coveting a watch at first glance (mine is the Tudor FXD). It will take years for me to save for the watch, but that will only enhance your enjoyment when your Zenith is on your wrist!
The cream of the crop!👌 Have a look at vintage Abel chronograph watches: some had El Primero movements, others had 7750’s. Beautiful watches(no see-thru exhibition backs), flying under the radar. Abel has changed orientation since the 2 original ownwers have passed away: fashion watches for women!😢! Good designs never die, they just get sweeter!😍
3:13 besides the date window 🤷♂️there’s something about the way the lugs seem to be too high off the wrist in this wrist roll. Good looking watch tho. Thanks for sharing it. I’m also in the market for a chrono and will try this on if I can find one. 👍
Honestly, one of the best watches I have seen or felt for the price, wish I can own one soon. My only gripe is how much cheaper they sell them on grey market.
Love it. For me, I’m struggling with the faux patina and the lug profile. But still like it. Would have been nice to hear how that funky seconds hand works / is used. Thanks for the vid.
It's a lovely watch. Another is the A384 with a panda dial and the tonneau case. Great value given that a ceramic Daytona will cost £25-30k (forget getting one from an AD at retail price).
A beautiful watch - I would love to see more Zenith watches designed like this. Would also love to see it with an El Primero 21 movement (I just love the sweep when measuring 1/100th!)
Would like to hear your thoughts on the cut-out Rolex makes in the case of their modern watches to slot the bracelet into (including 36mm and 40mm Explorer for example). Seems to me Rolex is killing off the ability to use straps with their watches.
I agree, a lot of classically inspired Zenith watches get overlooked. Another calibre they made however, is also overlooked. Calibre 135. Granted, time only calibre, but a stunner. Kari Voutilainen reqorked the 135 for Zenith recently and those pieces looks orgasmic.
Wow beautiful 😍 , must admit I am normal not a fan and only have one chrono in my collect which only persists as it was a family inherited watch. This watch my have just changed my mind . Love the format btw.
One of my favourites from Zenith, too. You need to take a look at that TAG Heuer Carrera panda 60th anniversary model. The best reissue of all time imo.
Speaking of "originals" I have a 1997 Zenith El Primero, which literally was the movement used in the Daytona of that period. And except for the subdial chapter rings, the Daytona looks exactly like the El Primero. One way you can tell a Daytona that uses the El Primero movement is that the seconds subdial is in the 9 o'clock position as shown in your photo at 5:18.
This is an absolutely gorgeous watch. The dial is beautifule, the size is perfect for my wrist, and the movement is packed with ground-breaking mechanical tech and vintage tool watch vibe. I would greedily wish the price would be reduced for around $1K to the level of their own Revival El Primero so that I could pull the trigger without question, but at its current standing it sits top of my list for my next purchase.
This is absolutely stunning from every perspective: dimensions, movement, history and comfort on the wrist. I'd buy this over a Daytona every time.
and easier to get
It's absolutely insane to me that after everything Zenith has brought to the watchmaking world and for all of their brilliance, they really don't get the love they completely deserve
Branding and marketing is everything. JLC and Zenith are proof of this, they make a superb product, but lack in branding and marketing.
🤫 while they are still a good value on the secondary market. I’m saving for a A384 on a ladder bracelet over here.
@@BarkandJack interesting. It would appear that Rolex is best in the business in terms of Branding and Marketing but what they do doesnt really connect with me. Grown up seeing the Brand in association with Wimbledon so have always known the Brand but thats as far as it goes.
@@FABM27 Rolex market well, that's the main thing, and they also make good solid products with comfortable bracelets.
Just wait till it needs serviced

I have owned two Zenith watches. I still have the Defy Classic skeleton in my collection. They are so beautifully made.

Great video, beautiful watch, my favourite from Zenith
Love all of your vids Adrian. Well done.
I am lucky to own a El Primero, chronograph open heart, with the white dial, it is beautiful, and just so accurate 😍

This is my next watch Adrian, it’s beautiful, tried it on the other day and it’s a perfect fit , time for my Speedmaster Reduced to go.
Great video as always, Adrian. And what a fantastic looking watch. If you mentioned the price, I missed it, but I guess it retails around 9-10k USD.
Love it. For me, I’m struggling with the faux patina and the lug profile. But still like it. Would have been nice to hear how that funky seconds hand works / is used. Thanks for the vid.
That watch on the ladder bracelet would really be fun to wear. I wonder if the ladder bracelet would fit?
Immediately liked it when it launched. Awesome inverse panda.
Under rated Zenith as always but the A385 reissue is rather my ‘vintage’ choice. A great video!
In my opinion it has so much character and personality. My favorite chronograph👍

I like your taste adrian. I really love this beautiful watch.
I sold my Speedy for this piece and never looked back. My only gripe is that the legibility of the white hands can be a bit difficult at times.
Was wondering what took you and other watch snobs so long to notice this sleeper gem.
Check out the older 38mm Fortis chronograph. Good review and I’ll need to look into this Zenith. Thanks!
