In one of the earliest interviews in her career, Lana made it clear that she wasn’t interested in making music that was “just pop.” All these years later, as she’s now the industry’s most intriguing poet, Lana Del Rey creates genre-defying songs that can teach all of us something about vulnerability, human nature and society at-large.
00:20 - Norman F****** Rockwell! 03:50 - Mariner's Apartment Complex 06:56 - Venice Bitch 15:44 - F*ck it, I Love You 17:56 - Doin' Time 22:00 - Love Song 24:52 - Cinnamon Girl 30:17 - How to Disappear 34:31 - California 38:27 - The Next Best American Record 43:39 - The Greatest 49:43 - Bartender 52:55 - Happiness is a Butterfly 57:43 - Hope is a Dangerous Thing For a Woman Like Me To Have - But I Have It
Lana Del Rey could commit the most heinous crime imaginable and I would still die for her. She’s my all-time favorite artist and each of her albums (but especially this one) have marked extremely important times in my life. She is the artist of my generation and I will accept zero counter arguments. I highly recommend all of her previous albums, which are each very distinct and dabble in different genres, and her new album, which is by far her most intimate and emotional!
Sooo Lana (Elizabeth Grant) grew up in Lake Placid, NY. Small town, upstate. She had a bad relationship with her mother, and developed a dependence on alcohol in her early teens. Her mother shipped her off to a boarding school at 15, and never allowed her to return. She lived with her uncle, who worked at the school. Her experience at the boarding school was even worse, a lot of the kids were into drugs, and she developed an eating disorder. After that, Lana went to university for metaphysical philosophy, and planned to write poetry. She got into singing at open mic nights, traveled around singing at songwriting competitions. She was discovered at one, put out an album. Her management at the time sucked, and she pulled the album. She lived in a trailer and became a waitress. Went to AA, joined a cult. Eventually got back into singing, and was TRULY discovered. Wrote Born To Die, which was semi-autobiographical. Each subsequent album became more autobiographical, until we’re left with just Lana. And she’s fabulous. If you want more Lana, and you love Jack, you could listen to the album she made after NFR, Chemtrails Over the Country Club. If you want to listen to more psychedelic rock, choose Ultraviolence, produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. If you want to start at almost the beginning, there’s Born To Die. But truly, you can’t go wrong with any of her work.
Thank you so much for this comment! We love learning more about the history behind the artist. I was actually initially drawn to Lana after I heard she was in recovery, because I am as well. I think that while a lot of her lyrics are heavy that it must also be cathartic for her to be able to get some of that trauma out. She’s truly amazing and I couldn’t be happier that we get to live in a world that’s blessed by her music. -Zach
@@WaveReact Lana is one of those once in a generation artists, and if she connects to your brain, it’s a fascinating journey. I started listening because David Lynch said he was a fan, and mentioned how Lana made references to his work throughout her projects. Then I fell in love. I’m glad her music resonates with you in that way. Great reaction. Can’t wait for whatever is next!
I’m not even American and this album makes me feel like an American born girl laying on a beach in California just floating away. Lana is amazing at taking you to those places in her mind
@@delianaxoxo isn't that just a unreleased demo? Most of her ureleased stuff are also banging. Hollywood, Hollywoods dead, Gas station queen, Kinda outta luck, Motel 6, Wild one, Dragon Slayer, Serial Killer etc. Those are MASTERPIECES and I could name lots more. I actually prefer the demo version of the Next Best American Record over the official one, lol.

Loved your reaction to NFR! This is tied in 3rd place with another album of hers called Honeymoon ❤. And I’ve seen Thousands of Reaction Videos, and I have to say, absolutely LOVE what you two are doing with the Lyrics in the Background, in the center of Frame! That’s how it should be done! So Unique 🙂🤘🏼
Can I just note the background vocals in summertime just does something to me. If you ever get a chance to listen to the instrumental with her backing vocals, it’ll take you to a whole other place.
48:40 YES and also idk if you guys listen to arctic monkeys but Alex Turner is also one of the best lyricist and a collab between Lana and them would be perfection
Another lana albums I would suggest is either Ultraviolence or Honeymoon! Honeymoon is underrated!! But besides Lana, I would recommend Khurungbin and their album Con Todo El Mundo, they are such a great chill psychedelic band. I love them!
Lana is very misunderstood in today's modern landscape. She represents traditional sensitive femininity and is not a feminist bad bitch. So when she writes and sings about dark feelings associated with who she is and how she feels, especially with regards to love and complex relationships, people just can't seem to understand or empathize. I guess emotional intelligence and nuance isn't common anymore. But she makes soul music, not shit to twerk at the club to. Thank God for that.
Love it or hate it she’s real and she stays herself. She’s not a monolithic mind. She’s very individualistic in her mindset, yet she remains collectively conscious. I dont agree with every perspective she has nor relate to everything she sings about or speaks on, but I respect her rawness and openness. She makes herself vulnerable, she exposes her neck to the public blade fearlessly and that’s something to be commended for in today’s age where everyone is policing everyone’s thoughts and feelings. She says what she says and sings what she sings unapologetically.
This is kind of ironic, considering the second half of A&W and at least a couple songs on L4L (i’d even include btd) are songs you can twerk at a club to. And there’s nothing wrong with that lol, she’s a self-described American Whore :)
Thanks for listening with us! And to be honest, you might have just given me my next record to bring to our Undiscovered series, which we are filming tonight! 😉
