In B4 "shoulda made trapdoors functional" comments....didn't want to, that would really be pretty pointless ;P Hope you guys enjoyed this vid, and I hope it helps all those asking about doing wood texture on foam. If you wanna pick up some tools & supplies to tackle this build don't forget you can help out the channel in the process by grabbing stuff via my essential equipment links: bit.ly/EssentialEquip
Pointlessly awesome, you mean! Just kidding, way too much work for practically no payoff, and would probably make the whole thing far too fragile for actual (or at least, repeated) use.
OK, so that's a no on the trapdoors, but why do the condemned have their weapons drawn. Surely they should be disarmed with their hands tied behind their backs. 2/7 literally unusable, the wood texturing is nice though.
I'm not going to spoil things and let you know I made a guillotine video for next week............but if I were to do something like that, I'd have the same mindset, that making it function would be pointless for game purposes so I wouldn't bother.....not that I've done this or anything....nope. Stay tuned for next friday's episode, it will be a TOTAL surprise.
THANK YOU for steering away from brown wood! Your dark brown wood is the only thing you do that I found annoying, so I literally cheered when you stopped the video to go outside and check out the fence boards. Lovely work as always. For not being a knot guy your nooses aren't bad at all.
I love this channel! Always very creative and funny. I can’t craft and I don’t even play dnd right now but is it weird I like to watch this before bed since it’s so relaxing?
Knuckle Joe I don’t listen to rain asmr much, but curling up with a blanket during a storm is one of my favorite things for sure. I weirdly enough like the thunder too lol
I first saw your custom dragon build, after that I subscribed and started watching the tutorials from ep 1. Maybe 3 weeks in and I'm at this episode...
Jeremy great job again!!! I was wondering if you could do a video of all the game pieces you made for your gaming table, “All the items on your Shelves!!” Behind you when you make your videos!!
Even though ive seen all your old videos, I still enjoy how you recap on the process of your builds. Great looking work. Another great video. Thanks for posting.
After once getting molten solder in my eye, I don't mess around with not wearing safety glasses....even when they seem unnecessary, because weird things happen.
If you want to skip the trap door(s) on your tree, set the beam a bit higher so there is room for the barrels/stools that the hangman will kick out from under your minis' feet.
Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to this hobby, especially crafting with foam. Been having a blast so far crafting all sorts of things and it made DnD so much more fun.
I recommend for weathered looks, especially in wood, to use more greens in a base coat! Humidity and mold tends to green things over time, especially wood. These vids are super inspiring and makes me even more excited to world build for dnd!
Great entrance drop... also just a great video. I liked the more behind the scene adds, but also just how well this project turned out. Definitely copying this!
The wood looks absolutely fantastic. I do really appreciate your effort in trying to produce more realistic wood. This method will be my guide from now on.
My only problem is "Hirst-itis." The scale is off by at least a factor of 2. I understand that sometimes too big actually looks good, but the right scale ALWAYS looks good.
Sorry for late comment - maybe this is answered elsewhere but I can't find it. You frequently talk about a 'golden brown' for your new wood painting technique. Your golden brown looks quite a bit more orange'y than the CraftSmart "golden brown" color. Which paint color are you using for this technique?
ever wonder why chip board is called chip board, isn't it just "cereal" box cardboard? I mean I can see a lot of the stuff my mom's putting in the recycle bin and i'm going to sneak in and take it out! hahaha...
I feel kind of handicapped here in the UK. No matter where I look I can't find that soft pink foam that you use so often. I have found some but it's nowhere near as good as what you have. It's frustrating. Great build btw.
LOL, I watched this specifically to see what clever hack you found to make miniature noose. Well at least I do not feel as bad that I cannot make them easily.
To make a noose for miniatures I use a small jig I made with some MDF board and two finishing nails. Just hammer in the nails enough to hold and as far apart as you need the noose and wraps. From here there's two ways of doing it. The first and easiest way for those that aren't good with knots is a simple overhand knot. Make sure that the knot is at the back side of one of the nails, now cut off a length of the twine and wrap in up to 13 times between the two nails and glue the ends to the wrap and cut off any extra from the ends. I use superglue on the end of a toothpick for this so it can slide up and down freely for now. Now loosen the overhand knot so you can take it off the nails. Slide the wrap to the knot or tighten the not till you have the right size loop you need and glue the wrap to the knot. This will stop it from sliding off and it will look like an actual hangman's noose. The second way. Like the first coil the twine between the two nails, only if you know how to make a hangman's noose, and on the back coiling (going back towards the noose loop) and make your 13 wraps and finish as you would for a noose. Once done carefully slide the noose off the nails and feed the tail of the twine through the loop on that end and lightly pull the loop at the other end to tighten the noose not and done. You can adjust the loop to the size you need at this point and use glue, superglue or pva or whatever you prefer to lock it in place. Maybe I should be making videos on how to do all these small detail pieces. Don't have the right camera or much time really to do them though. So I will just give my advice when and where I can I guess.
Yeah, but theres always that one drunk guy in our group who wants to put his finger through the hangman's noose and get it stuck...pulling the gallows halfway off the table.
Ya know my current dragonborn fighter probably could have been ahnged at the gallows for beating the crap out of another dragonborn but i think hed be to tall for most gallows, and maybe too heavy
Is it weird that I'd very much like to make you a few nooses and send them your way 🤣 Or it it more weird that my parents showed me how to make them as a kid and I've gotten pretty good at it. 🤔
Have you tried using small lead shot in the knots to make the rope hang better I embed plastic skulls with it to make them hang better on chains if that makes sense
I would cut the rope with the knife they foolishly allowed me to keed ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!, thanks for this, great video and just what I wanted to do today
Another great video, Jeremy. I've once again been inspired to get to work on actually making things, haha. Sometimes I really just need this kind of jump start, so thanks for that. Cheers!
Curious which specific colour are you using for the drybrushing? My Craftsmart "Tan" looks is a lot more gray than what you're using. Is it Suede or Khaki or something like that? Thanks for all the great videos, it's been a real help getting into this new hobby.
Awesome job and vid as always! How do you avoid the planks getting too grainy when using the brush? Mine are constantly grainy, with small flecks/grits of the foam, rather than straight lines :'(
The technique works better in one direction than the other. Foam has a "grain" direction and you want to bursh with the grain rather than across it. Practice on some test pieces to get a feel for identifying the best direction. Sometimes it just happens though depending on the foam.
Ok, just first lemme say im a fan. I really like your vids and I think you have a great talent for this. But...i feel like you need to be careful with how you look for inspiration for your painting. The absolute first time i see someone to (rightfully) complain about "Just-Brown" Wood. Truly awesome Paintjob. And thanks for your Channel, you helped me getting started in this hobby :)
Very good coverage on the basics of "woodwork". I have gotten very good results on finishing by using a brown rather than black mod podge base. I use Apple Barrel Brown Oxide. A 1 part paint to 2 parts 'podge gives a nice medium brown undertone.
Now I want to walk around my Grandfather's farm to see what colour all the fences are. I suspect colour will depend a lot on what the wood has been treated with, like creosote/Creocote, especially as some of those treatments are "wood" coloured XD Of course, age and type of wood are. Dad's hen house for instance, is a shade of brown, but that's because it's former pallet wood coated in a shit ton of creocote >_>
Yea, that's the thing. You will find dark brown wood, usually because it's been stained with a persevative. I tend to imagine things like gallows in fantasy settings to just be natural wood, even if they were using some sort of stains (on houses and such) I doubt it would be used on something like this. The big factor is also what type of wood was used and how long it's been around for. Cedar for example silvers very quickly, where as spruce/pine/fir goes through a bleaching cycle first and takes much longer to go gray.....point of the story is, yea, totally go check out some old wood, see what you find, use that as inspiration! If nothing else you've had a fun day walking around a farm :)
I love the way this wood texture looks! I will be using this same technique for some upcoming projects. Which Folk Art color is that exactly? I’m having a hard time reading it from the video. Is it Raw Sienna? Thanks and keep the videos coming!!!
I think the thought/problem behind painting brown wood is that most people either don't know or have forgotten that wood only retains those brown colors for a very short amount of time if its not stained and/or sealed; left exposed to the elements, that brown gets leeched out rather quickly and is replaced with that grey/bleached look. So people just slap a couple of different browns on and call it a day, which is fine if you're looking to make something look like new wood but where's the fun in that?
Really, new wood (most species of softwoods used for timber construction) is naturally a very light yellow/gold, not dark brown. Dark brown really only occurs from stain/preservative, or in hardwoods like walnut that aren’t used for heavy construction. So any dark wood in miniature buildings really implies painted or stained wood if you’re forced to think about it. It’s fine to do that, but it’s fun to try and make things at least a little authentic looking sometimes....mostly because carved grain detail really gets lost when painted very dark.
Looks great! After building your (really cool) Goblin barricades I'm planning to build a wooden watchtower and would love to see any "light" wooden structures in the future. Thanks your videos!
In B4 "shoulda made trapdoors functional" comments....didn't want to, that would really be pretty pointless ;P

Pointlessly awesome, you mean! Just kidding, way too much work for practically no payoff, and would probably make the whole thing far too fragile for actual (or at least, repeated) use.
Ok what about making a working mini guillotine
Definitely more plausible
OK, so that's a no on the trapdoors, but why do the condemned have their weapons drawn. Surely they should be disarmed with their hands tied behind their backs.
2/7 literally unusable, the wood texturing is nice though.
Ian you could actually make one out of a hobby knife blade, but then it may be dangerous
I'm not going to spoil things and let you know I made a guillotine video for next week............but if I were to do something like that, I'd have the same mindset, that making it function would be pointless for game purposes so I wouldn't bother.....not that I've done this or anything....nope. I come back to this video for wood inspiration every time I need to paint it
I woulds say for woods, instead of a black modpodge, use a bown version
What was that tan he was using?
How would you do a flooded room? One that the characters can go down under the water.
More excellent foamsmithing.
I arrived late to this channel… and have watched episode 1 to 101.
Thank you!
I'm working on that right now too
I love this channel! Always very creative and funny. I can’t craft and I don’t even play dnd right now but is it weird I like to watch this before bed since it’s so relaxing?
I watch asmr videos every night to go to sleep.....mostly of people colouring or unboxing things....so no, not weird at all :D
Black Magic Craft yeah, I watch asmr sometimes too. I have insomnia so thanks for putting out videos to help :)
Mackenna Caren I have insomnia as well, I always play rain videos! Or something like a podcast that’s really chilled out.
Killer wood paint job! Very convincing.
That Death tarot card shirt on the gallows video though.
#details #extraeffort #sealthedeal
I suppose The Hanged Man would have been too on the nose.
Nah, if I had that shirt, you know I'd be doing it.
Where'd you get the Death one btw?
www.redbubble.com......which is the answer for %99 of the shirts I wear in videos.
Jeremy great job again!!! I was wondering if you could do a video of all the game pieces you made for your gaming table, “All the items on your Shelves!!” Behind you when you make your videos!!

Safety glasses everyone. You never know when crafting.

You: I wasn't doing good knots so I had to look up a reference.
FBI Agent: oh we got a suicider at {insert address here}
Beautiful work man. And loving the new music throughout.
Thank you!
That wood coloring is amazing!
You should have used waxed string for the ropes, it would have worked much better.
Awesome vid as always :D
Great entrance drop... also just a great video. I liked the more behind the scene adds, but also just how well this project turned out. Definitely copying this!
Thank you!
The wood looks absolutely fantastic. I do really appreciate your effort in trying to produce more realistic wood. This method will be my guide from now on.
nice addition to any DM's terrain. Also thanks for the extra content you posted the other day. Much appreciated.
Holy crap this is insane!!! Amazing!!!
Ok, I heard people talking about this video on the Facebook page. I am so happy that I finally had time to watch
"Not everyone is going to look in the back catalogue. Although, you should"
I am haha
GOD I LOVE THIS SHIT!🤘🏼
So awesome dude, can’t wait to make one
Another big build, I respect that.
Well done. 👏👏👏
This is incredible man love how it turned out
You are a true artist and knowledgeable teacher. Thankful for your back catalog. Slowly working my way through it.
The paint job for the wood looks really great, good work!
Incredible, i need one of this for my next session! Thanks, perfect timing!
I love this. Stuff that I can use with my paper maps are ALWAYS going to get made. Thanks!!!
Anyone have problems with that particular krylon melting foam? I have used other krylon stuff that did. Thanks guys.
My only problem is "Hirst-itis." The scale is off by at least a factor of 2. I understand that sometimes too big actually looks good, but the right scale ALWAYS looks good.

I'm so glad that you didn't get all 'hung up' about the whole situation!
LOVING the white 'Yorkshire Rose' on your T Shirt!
ever wonder why chip board is called chip board, isn't it just "cereal" box cardboard? I mean I can see a lot of the stuff my mom's putting in the recycle bin and i'm going to sneak in and take it out! hahaha...
Fun build! If you look at ships and fishing villages I think they might have had a lot of other rope built decorative bits.
I feel kind of handicapped here in the UK. No matter where I look I can't find that soft pink foam that you use so often. I have found some but it's nowhere near as good as what you have. It's frustrating. Great build btw.
have been watching ur channel for less than a week, havent watched how to make wood grain yet..............oooffff
Hi where can i buy black Mod Podge stuff ? i don't find the same model you use in video can you help me ? I've a lot of crafted structure to paint!
How come the minis being hung still have weapons? Lol. Love your work bud. Haven’t seen a vid or yours that I didn’t like.
OmG I will be using this to make a Evil Horde Hangmans Gallow for my MOTU diromas and customs.
LOL, I watched this specifically to see what clever hack you found to make miniature noose. Well at least I do not feel as bad that I cannot make them easily.
I’m pretty sure that I can just use this entire video to build a real gallows in my back yard... lol Your “inner contractor” is showing.
How dare these people not go back and watch every video, LOL. He's right though, you should.
To make a noose for miniatures I use a small jig I made with some MDF board and two finishing nails. Just hammer in the nails enough to hold and as far apart as you need the noose and wraps. Any crafters in the UK found a suitable finish matt spray that doesn’t melt the foam? - Thanks. 👍🏻
Applause to the dry brushing, so fucking beautiful!!! :D
Yeah, but theres always that one drunk guy in our group who wants to put his finger through the hangman's noose and get it stuck...pulling the gallows halfway off the table.
would guide holes for the tooth picks make the foam less sturdy than just jamming the picks in?
Best colour match for that light brown you use? Either vallejo or GW?
Incredible! How did they manage to keep their weapons while being hanged? Jk 😉😄
Ya know my current dragonborn fighter probably could have been ahnged at the gallows for beating the crap out of another dragonborn but i think hed be to tall for most gallows, and maybe too heavy
I'm pretty sure they take the weapons away from the condemned people before hanging them. lol
To help make nooses, use something like a toothpick while wrapping your loops and remove it after you start to tighten it.
Is it weird that I'd very much like to make you a few nooses and send them your way 🤣
Or it it more weird that my parents showed me how to make them as a kid and I've gotten pretty good at it. 🤔
Love your content.
Note to the town' law enforcement: take away their swords before you try to hang them. 😉
Dude... beautiful build!
Have you tried using small lead shot in the knots to make the rope hang better I embed plastic skulls with it to make them hang better on chains if that makes sense
Wire brush is genius! Love it 😀
Simple and effective!
take toothpicks and IMPALE THE FOAM
am i imagining it, or is the top side of the horizontal beam underneath the structure still purple at 13:08 ?
I would cut the rope with the knife they foolishly allowed me to keed ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!, thanks for this, great video and just what I wanted to do today
is there a way to make miniatures fully customizable and articulated?
Love the fact they were sentenced to death at the gallows, but given all their weapons 🤣
I do like the colour scheme. Very nice
That intro caused me physical pain. It was funny but it hurt
I'm.digging into the back catalogue right now lol
When tying small knots, tie them on a small dowel then slide them off....
With Eberron being out, have you considered doing a lightning rail or airship build?
I'm gonna be honest, I won't even look at that Eberron stuff.
so this is why in school they gave us marshmallows and toothpicks
13:15 you can see some pink that you missed. Not nitpicking.
Any thoughts on how to do niches? Possibly for poses statues in?
Another great video, Jeremy. I've once again been inspired to get to work on actually making things, haha. Sometimes I really just need this kind of jump start, so thanks for that. Cheers!
thanks for providing the links to get the materials
New People......Seriously, dig into the back catalog of videos.....it is so worth it!!!!
But then they can't ask me question's I've answered 200 times already! :P Thanks for watching :)
wow ! congratulations from Prague !!!!
great interlude! Love it! :)
Another awesome build.
Curious which specific colour are you using for the drybrushing? My Craftsmart "Tan" looks is a lot more gray than what you're using. Is it Suede or Khaki or something like that? Thanks for all the great videos, it's been a real help getting into this new hobby.
It’s either suede or khaki. Don’t remember which because I use both often. But for this its one of those, whichever is the lighter of the two.
My first thought was he made a video dedicated to me, GALLOWAY! I'm not a hangman but a cool build nevertheless. 👍
Just for you man, just for you.
This looks great! The weathering is epic!
This is one of my favorite of your builds!
Im gettin crazy vsauce vides off your intros man ha, great vid.
2:07 "I bet you really loved that mixing of metric and imperial measurements"
As a fellow Canadian, I didn't even notice.
Yea bud
Ok, just first lemme say im a fan.
I really like your vids and I think you have a great talent for this.
But...i feel like you need to be careful with how you look for inspiration for your painting.
I saw that you looked at your old fence for the color...that looked like old pressure treated lumber. It goes VERY grey with age. and the grey is super intense.
and frankly i feel like you went a little too grey on the gallows.
But that being said there are woods that do turn a more grey tone with age naturaly.
So its not like im saying its wrong or that you messed up.
But just bare in mind that sometimes that old wood you see...is what old "modern" wood looks like.
A gallows was usualy custom built for every hanging. Unless of course they did hangings like every day. Guess then they would keep a set.
But usualy they were built relativly new so a less aged look might have went good. But as said..its cool i really liked it.
and i woulda loved to see some sort of mechanism to release a trap door to make it actuaslly a working gallows.
Also have you made a guillotine?
maybe a whole tourture cell torture dungeon thing would be cool Iron maden the rack and some chains hanging on the wall...that sorta thing?
That fence is cedar bud.

So brown weathered wood you actually never use a darker brown? Just a Golden /Brown? Then light Tan dry brush and a brown/black wash?
Yes
I think the thought/problem behind painting brown wood is that most people either don't know or have forgotten that wood only retains those brown colors for a very short amount of time if its not stained and/or sealed; left exposed to the elements, that brown gets leeched out rather quickly and is replaced with that grey/bleached look.
