    it's beautiful. I think the "candlelight" looks good, but the window frame is too similar in colour for it to really pop out. I believe it would look even better with some darker brown around it.

      Our group built a table like that around ten years ago, using the Popeye village in Malta as inspiration. It wasn't anything like as awesome as the stuff Jeremy makes, but it looked pretty good and was made almost entirely from cardboard. Over the years it got used in all sorts of games from D&D, Warhammer Fantasy, Mordheim etc but it deteriorated pretty badly and only a few bits still survive, but this video is inspiring me to maybe remake it using better materials and techniques.
      Awesome work, as always, Mr Jeremy!

      That would be sick! Two options: a ship that was suddenly overtaken when the magical frost overtook the city a thousand years ago, OR a ship that ran aground with new adventurers when it crashed into thick ice in the harbor with plates of ice jutting up around the boat and debris thrown overboard.

    After seeing this, people who think 3D printed buildings are better than handcrafted terrain can kiss your ass. I'm blown away at the artistry on display here, and can't believe how cool this looks! You're a master at your craft, man, and it is a pleasure watching you work! It is even cooler to know that I can try it myself.

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  5 лет назад +6

      Arguing 3D printing vs hand crafted is like arguing photography vs painting. Utterly pointless. They are both art forms, what matters is the artist using them. That being said 3D printing someone else’s art basically amounts to printing a photo of someone’s painting. Mad respect for those that design the files or those that mix them with their own craft.....but only printing others work? To me that is sad and utilitarian. Not for me.

    • @FrankyDCrafter
      @FrankyDCrafter 5 лет назад +1

      Black Magic Craft that’s exactly how I view it. The other way I look at it is by giving the respect to those dms that take the time to craft but still be able to give respect to those dms that care enough about their player experience to give them something nice to look at ( no matter if it was printed or crafted) people should get less caught up with which table dressing style is better and just have fun playing the game.

    1. That is beyond awesome. It would be neat to see a town of shipwreck buildings.

    This is freaking amazing!! A suggestvfor the windows that you paint the frames a darker brown so that the yellow behind them stands out more, paint them a shade darker than the rest of the piece. But OMG it's amazing. Reminds of a house that this group from WoW would live in. I can't remember what they're called but they're like walruses and are 🎣 type species of course.

    What a beautiful craft! Really really cool. Tons of uses. Thanks for your video and thank the lady for the idea. Just an idea for the first part. Maybe use chipboard to make a two piece hull attached to a keel part in the center. Then you can glue paper strips or thin foam strips to look like the planks of the hull. That will save you the hustle of measuring and making the internal ribs to give strength to the building.

    Great job, Jeremy! This is a really cool design that exudes character and really helps set a neat tone. Makes me think of "the walrus and the carpenter." A late thought on the colors of the window: How about adding a gradient from black to orange? Also colouring the topwindow darker, to simulate the light of a weak candle that is farer away from the top window than the bottom one.

  • @SlyBlu7

    As someone who builds scale model ships for fun - you had the right idea with the keel and ribs. You're right about not having much surface area - it's something that a lot of newby ship makers forget; you should have beveled the ribs to follow the curve of the decking above. This gives you more surface area, and also makes sure that you're not bending the planking over a sharp corner.
    If you're not gonna use real wood, I would have used plasticard, aka polystyrene sheet. Not sure if you've ever used that material in the past, and I know it can be a little spendy, but it would really help you out. You can bend it around angles like the hull of your ship, but it's also rigid enough to not droop like the foam under your porch. You can buy it in different thicknesses, from paper thin (but still rigid) up to the thickness of your chipboard. It also comes in various dowels, strips, pre-stamped patterns like cobblestone, and so on. You can glue it with plastic glue, which creates a chemical weld between the layers and it will never come apart. It's also safe for spraypaint and doesn't dissolve like foam.
    Seriously man, you should check it out. Evergreen is the best, but kinda on the pricier side. There are some bad brands and bad qualities out there, so if you're gonna experiment, I'd start with Evergreen to get the "real deal" and then cheap out later.

  • @xxhellspawnedxx
    @xxhellspawnedxx 5 лет назад

    Looks great! And don't sweat it about the windows. It's incredibly hard to paint realistic light effects. You'd need to use a photo reference to get the fall-off just right behind the window, and paint in light spill and overblown details on the window frame. At that point, it would probably be easier to just use a battery-powered LED with a diffuser in front of it inside the window - Same effect, less work.

  • @jchunick
    @jchunick 5 лет назад

    That is amazing! What would have added even a bit more character would have been broken railing extending out from the curved frame since it would have reinforced the idea of a *shipwreck*... plus, probably a patched area in the hull roof, and some barnacles.

      Yes, there are many ways how to make illusion for interieur. Maybe just pictures of cupboards and similar on the walls inside and table and charis to get some 3d effect. Since the glas isnt really flat and we have a distorted view of the interieur, it could work and look pretty realistic?

    That was astounding. Also for the light in the window a trick I've found helpful is having one point as the origin of the light an off white and go to yellows, orange and a red/brown in progressively darker shades as you move away from the light source. Do some blending starting at the lightest color and drag lightly into the darker colors with a soft dry brush.

    Brilliant way to pull that off. Another way to do this would be to use model ship plans to make templates of hull supports etc (thought of this as my dad used to build model ships from scratch and he has loads of books with templates) if you overlap the planks a little then the gap problem wouldn't be so bad, just like real ships.

    Here’s an idea for the window effect .… My dad was a dental technician, to make false teeth you make a base out of polished gold and then put an opaque acrylic on top of that... The idea is light entering the acrylic will reflect off the gold and radiate out giving the effect of a fully translucent tooth like A real tooth. Perhaps you could line the window area with some tinfoil or tinfoil tape and then lightly airbrush over that with whites and yellows so that light will reflect out from behind the paint. Don’t know if it would work but it would be worth trying!

    I really like how this turned out, my only small criticism would be that the tusks above the door should be a bit more ivory than gold looking. It would have looked more natural, as well as the light behind the windows. It does not look like light shining through. Maybe if you had put in a low level LED light at the back? I wonder how that would have looked through the acrylic windows?

    Oh oh oh Jerome this one build makes me think a whole town is needed all of made from the wrecks of ships.
    Seems the inhabitants of Shipwreck Cove have been luring unwary ships to their doom for decades. A band of heroes are tasked with finding out how and stopping these dregs of society. Further investigation finds sorcery and an underwater form of Naga are aiding the people of Shipwreck Cove. The band must find a underwater breathing spell in order to bring the battle under the sea. Sounds like a bunch of fun terrain to make and some awesome monsters to craft. Naga, a form of underwater goblin that rides sea horses. A shambling hulk made of seaweed.... The imagination runs wild perhaps the band will find aid from merfolk and sea creatures they control.

    Another fantastic build! That pelt overhang is amazing O_O Was a bit dubious when I started watching the video about where I might get a small square of fake fur... so was brilliant to discover you had achieved the look using nothing more than loo roll!

    at 5:41 you were talking about struggling with the planking on that curved part. Try hitting the foam with a heat gun and bending the foam while its warm. It will take shape easier!

    this build makes me think a whole village of shipwreck builds be cool for a game setting/ like a cove where ships are sunk by nearby pirates and the survivors have to build houses out of the remains and try and survive or such

    Love to watch your videos. I had never felt confident painting mins or have played DND but I always enjoyed the look. Painted my first few minis yesterday and I far outperformed my own expectations. Your videos taught me a lot. Thank you.

    It helps to know that the planks on a ship are not straight. They are steam bent r they use some other method of bending the compound curve before applying to the hull frame.
    Or they'll use "ship lap" overlapping by appx half the width f the plank in the middle and almost no overlap at the bow t build a base layer so they have a solid surface apply the main planks as they are bent.

    It would be interesting to take this idea, and make the Snapping Line inn in Saltmarsh. The text says it's made from half a dozen boats, but I don't think you'd need to make six recognizable different boats. Technically the flavor text only says its made from the wood of the boats, but I think it would be cool if you could still recognize parts of the boats.

    Late to the party, but responding to your comment about basing your minis but not your buildings: I agree with your method. You can get away without creating a specific base for buildings, as they already take up enough space to stand on their own. You can't do the same with mini's as they generally need a base to stay upright. You could try using a clear base, but they're never close enough to invisible. Plus, mini's are so small as is that adding a specific terrain to the base is another way to give the mini some character. Is this someone at home on the arctic tundra, or the cobbled streets of a metropolis? Do they enjoy the green spring pastures near their home, or do they hunt in the autumn forest far away? Each character can bring this "history" with them. But for buildings, we generally want them to inhabit a variety of 'characters' instead, so a more generic base is helpful.

    Are you a gamer? Looks like it was merely a gateway drug to making. This is a superb build. I think scratch builds are far more satifying than kits [not knocking the place of kits in the whole gaming experience] - speaking more as a maker that is. This ship/cottage is a mini work of art, the colouring of the wood is perfect. I think the windows need work though - they could do with weathering IMO as the clear material stands out a bit much. The interior effect might work better if it was situated further back behind the glass maybe a box or curved card inside, with maybe day-glo colour mix into the 'glow' colours. Still an amazing build [i.e. I want to live in it] Great work and inspiration!

    I think your thinking for minis is. The base is being detailed the way they are is because that's their home, that is the base of their journey. And it's a part of their personality and where they come from. But that's just my thoughts. Where as the building are just building, yeah a building can have personality but at the end of day, a house is a house.

    you need to go with a more yellowish tent with a light black around the boarder for that lighting effect behind the window I think
