@blackmagiccraft I spent a home brew session in a tavern last week. Where a regular in the town was cursed and decided to enter stage left and begin to one shot kill all the townspeople NPC's which were given to the PC's to play/control before anyone knew what was going on. The curse was strong and it took us 5 hours to stop the madness. Murder weapons were two cursed wands that seemed like level 15 Eldrich wands with reaction bursts. Thanks to forgeworld for the incredible tavern set, it was a good time.
You could totally put plastic dowels and sockets on the edges so you could re-use these segments (maybe with different fascias) to become houses, halls, corridors, castle keeps etc. Love the build; so relaxing to watch and gave me great ideas for trying something myself
I’m not a crafter, nor do I play D&D but my daughter and her friends do and she’s always hitting me up for new mats, tiles, etc. I stumbled on this channel a couple of days ago by way of rabbit hole after seeing ideas for making game pieces as an alternative to spending a fortune buying it all. After watching some of your videos I've started putting together tools to start this hobby for myself. Thank you for the work you put into you craft and keep it up!
I used terrain not just for combat but also for dioramas and stuff as we play. Like if the players camp they set up camp and we put the little fire on while we roleplay the night time and stuff, even if there won't necessarily be an ambush. It's a good way to keep the players imagination stimulated. So I could see a tavern being useful for that sort of thing... especially if you have lots of cozy lighting and music to go along with it.
Since this is a more stage-esque build, I recommend turning the two side walls out in a more 30-45 degree angle. It will allow all the players to see the complete set and since you are trying to not show off the back sides, you can hide them better. I work at my high school on set builds and that's just what we do in order to hide the back sides better. Awesome job on this I love them!

As I am watching this video, I am painting the baseplate for my modular 2 or 3 story inn/tavern that is made from dollar store foam board with windows of 'granny grid'. I did not do any interiors on that one, but your build was fun to watch, thank you.
Great model! I like the idea of the green acetate behind the windows as it looks really effective. Once my broken arm comes out of its cast, I may try this as my diorama needs an inn/tavern.
I watch this channel for wargaming terrain ideas, we play all our TTRPG games over Roll20 because we don't all live in the same US states. But dang, our tavern map almost always gets the most use! I know in-person gaming would be different, but we would have a very different experience without the very carefully detailed tavern map we all use! This looks amazing and I guess I'm just going to binge the whole channel.
Well done, Jeremy! I think it is not only a "set piece" for photographs, I would actually use it for storing / parking & presenting miniatures between games.
You really did an awesome job on this, especially the windows! Heck this could be used for any interior for a fantasy building like a shop or some other place of business , maybe even a rustic country church if you threw some pews in and a pulpit
This is something I’m going to end up needing sometime soon. Thank you for showing this special exception to your rules. I look forward to getting to this level at some point.
It's so funny how different everyone's tables are. The tavern/inn in my game is my players home base. They're friends with the bartender, one of them is in love with the owner. Every time a quest is complete and they "come home" to regroup, eat, rest or talk to their main quest giver, it's in the tavern. It's the single most used place in my game, and we're all attached to it and the cute kitty that lives inside. I even made a food, drink and alcohol menu.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Absolutely true. I mean, I guys I COULD, but it's their safe space. Lol. I copied Tom Cartos' Mannered Bear Tavern map to the tiniest detail. I can't even tell you how long it took. 😄
Honestly I am surprised you didn't make something like this sooner to showcase the miniatures and smaller set pieces you build. Also I absolutely love how the windows turned out! Using the resign as glass looks great and the green behind it gives this an awesome tavern feel.
Looks amazing, really makes me want to try to get my hands on some of that foam Gerard uses! I look forward to finding out about the new quest givers module
Awesome video. I just finished the Great Pyramid of Giza and now I am starting this project to build my own tavern. Also, as a thank you for the great videos that I have been learning from, I joined your patreon. Keep up the great work and I look forward to more.
Lol so funny I think all centre pieces that make players smile are worth it. I started my players at a tavern called the Windy Goat this session and its as run down as it sounds... and they loved it😆
I keep noodling around with the idea of a modular tavern set. It's true that you don't need one particular tavern all that often, but over the span of your campaign-- and later campaigns, you'll need lots of taverns every once in a while. So if you have all the bits and a few large pieces you can shift around, you could create different taverns really quickly. Maybe one's just a big, open hall and another one is lots of small rooms all mashed together haphazardly, and another one is mostly open-air on a busy market street. The same wall sections would also work for different kinds of urban buildings like shops or houses. Having a few big pieces - like the bar counter or a stage for entertainers - would make the setup faster.
Maybe adding paper with different grey tones or grey scale trees / branches behind the stained glass could have added an illusion of depth or an 'outside' to the build. That's just minor details though, I think it looks absolutely awesome! Started following Gerard after your video together, never knew I had such a master living practically next door!
That Sir, was quite impressive - really enjoyed the video and look forward to giving this a try. I like the whole “stage setting” idea, and putting that on some sort of a turnaround would be killer so that everyone at the table could have a good view - or spin it their way to see what was going on. Cheers and keep ‘em coming!
Another epic build. Tavern looks great. I made some interior bannisters on the channel to separate the main area up into sections but not have full walls to block sight. I like how they use traditional filmography for there module scenes. I’m looking forward to your adventure as well as I’ve played all the others thus far. I know yours will be dark!!!
Hey man. I just started on my journey into building sets and and your videos really are helpful. I subscribed to keep up with new ideas and techniques.
FYI the vallejo wash is a dipping formula, so its a bit thicker than say a regular wash like nuln or sepia or agrax...I believe with a dipping technique you shake off the excess as with using army painter stains... but I routinely use these vallejo washes, particularly for colouring fine yellow basing sands and grits... the sepia and black mixed 1:1 make a good agrax equivalent. if youre going use on a model as paint on wash I thin them a little first,
Might do this for the guild houses that my players have access too, and the tavern model is really easy to be used for other things too, just gotta make a few extra walls and you have a indoor building set piece
I was planning build some nice tavern. Not for RPG, because we do not use miniatures or terrains in pen&paper play, but for skirmish wargaming. So nice interior, I have to figure out also exterior :D
Thanks so much for the time and energy that you invested into sharing your your skills and tips for building miniature terrain. I wish I could say I’m the newest Pattron supporter yet that is not in my deck of cards. I use the amazon link to help where I can. Being a DM that depends upon a wheelchair this hobby of building my own terrain is very relaxing and highly enjoyed for someone that has a ok knowledge of hand built furniture from the 1800s . Again I’m so happy that I stumbled upon your channel and site.
It's on my to do list. Just below the playboy mansion. The list of many unfinished projects. I really need to pull my finger out. Got all the interior bits even a nice 3D printed bar from eBay. All painted. All I need is the bricks n mortar. Love the nice light pine finish you get. Looks lovely. Think that's my Bar man moonlighting at your gaff.
What would be REALLY cool, is using it like an actual stage. Like putting it up on some pillars, and building more stage craft around it. Using the dirty exterior like it's a cheap stage hastily thrown together by a traveling band, or as something like a Wizard setting it and making the party do a 'play' on it, where they can escape 'backstage' and do battle behind the scene.
I love taking a confrontation into a tavern. 😅 For some reason it's when my players get most inventive and we have the most fun. Its like anything goes mayhem. I never did it with terrain until our last play session though. Man it was fun. Placing NPC patrons in their way or screwing with them while their trying to survive an assassination was great. Really screwed with their moral decisions and AOE spell abuse. lol. If/when it happens again I'm so using a psychic to make the whole bar turn on them. That's going to be fun. But yeah it doesn't happen all the time though....the tavern is supposed to be a safe space for them IMO. That place where they can usually let their guard down and take that long rest.
Great looking 'set' piece for use as a backdrop. I love the colors and the way they came out. I believe you said that the templates may be coming out soon. I hope so. I did watch the other video from last week but i don't remember whether or not you guys tried the same carving style on the pink foam. No matter since what you have here is yet one more tool in the set. Again awesome results.
Rather than using the stain glass printed sheets. There are other options you can do and also save money. I used to use this technique in the 80s and 90s when I built my dioramas, especially working with a budget. There are 2 options you can do to make stain glass windows. First, use either a colored plastic soda bottle when they used to come in colors like root beer would be in brown bottles, Mountain Dew used to come in green bottles, and such. At one time Arizona Tea and Snapple bottles used to be colored bottles. Take off the label and then using an exacto or box knife Id cut it open on one side of the bottle just enough to get my scissors in there to cut off the smooth strip around the bottle thats under the label. Then press it under some books or boards to help it flatten out some more. And if I needed a different color window like red or blue Id use either a clear soda or water bottle and do the same thing. Then after I laid out my pattern to cut the plastic I needed for the window. Id either trace the outline of the window frame so I had an idea where the panels of the window were then Id either paint them with acrylic paint if I wanted a multi color stain glass window. Or if I just wanted a one solid color window Id spray paint whatever color I wanted whether it be red, blue, yellow, etc on one side. Then when it was time to glue it to the inside of the window frame Id either superglue it or hot glue the painted side on the outside. So that way the paint was on one side and the shine of the plastic bottle was facing the inside of the window frame so I wouldnt have to use epoxy to make it look more shiny. But If I did use epoxy within the window frame Id premix my epoxy and then using a toothpick to apply the epoxy and then smooth it out while it was still wet. Then let it dry over night before I installed it. Second you could also do the same thing using clear mylar sheets, or plastic film or plastic bottles again like I first mentioned. And then go to Michaels, Hobby Lobby or some other craft store and look for either color mirror film or you can also see if they carry colored plastic film. If you use the mirror mylar film you still need to attach it to some clear sheet of plastic of some sort. For the mirror film is so flimsy it will tear on you if you try to use it by itself as the stain glass. Now if you find the colored plastic film then all you need to do is cut it out in the shape you need for your window and then glue it to the window frame. Which is a lot more simpler that trying to adhere the mirror mylar to a piece of clear plastic sometimes for you tend to get these air bubbles in it. Its similar to the tint on car windows. And the colored sheets come in many colors if I wanted red, blue, yellow, orange etc for the windows.
Looks good I think I would made one the walls the entrance, also I hope you work more on the furnishings before you photograph it bars have Places to sit, maybe a fire place, etc.
Yanno, I'd have painted a few splotched stains on the tavern floor. Like dried blood. (weg) For a little more authenticity; leaded in roundals were the common men's window panes. I went into our local game store here in Naples, Fl, WarHammer. I had a fig I wanted further identification on, unfortunately they couldn't help me. Turns out all figs are either resin or plastic these days. Seeing a metal fig was a unique experience for them. So for a while I entertained them with experiences of "back when".
As a historian, I can't get over all the windows and all the little glass bottles. And BOOKS! In a tavern! This must be the richest tavern owner in the kingdom!
I think it’d make for a great skirmish if you have are given the quest to go to the mountains and discover the old temple where the evil wizards coven have been sacrificing towns people and just when you’re amped up and ready to leave the wizards stroll into the tavern for a drink and you have to battle them right then and there.

Wow, very creative, it looks wonderful. We all must build tavern, because most of nights in game heroes sleep in tavern.
Stunning and made out of thin air!
That green really pops! I love it!!
You really did an awesome job on this, especially the windows! Heck this could be used for any interior for a fantasy building like a shop or some other place of business , maybe even a rustic country church if you threw some pews in and a pulpit
These people do have access to some high quality saw mill and exquisite long timber.
But this sort of role play doesn’t require terrain like a combat setting does.
Now I want a shallower version of this, to store the PC's miniatures between games.
Very nice. To bad we cannot have that foam in Canada!.
I find having a tavern was always a good setting to start a story!
Impressive result, especially considering you were experimenting with new material and techniques!
Lol so funny I think all centre pieces that make players smile are worth it. I started my players at a tavern called the Windy Goat this session and its as run down as it sounds... and they loved it😆
very fun, I'de love to see more sets instead of battle map esc terrain and other stuff, I feel like stuff like this needs more love
Playable interior, front wall is attached to the roof.. Remove to reveal the stage of the inside.
That's exactly what I was thinking!
That is a Great idea, I hope to see someone try that out!
Taverns are my FAVE
Maybe adding paper with different grey tones or grey scale trees / branches behind the stained glass could have added an illusion of depth or an 'outside' to the build. That's just minor details though, I think it looks absolutely awesome! Started following Gerard after your video together, never knew I had such a master living practically next door!
This is awesome! Love the realistic looking windows!
Love it. The windows turned out great.
10:11 8 bit music makes me wanna play castlevania or something 👍 very nice build!
EDIT: turned out I'm still singing the tune an hour later 😂
Addramyr Palinor i was feeling the need to play mega man.
the song is called "Helios by LEXICA". it shows a pixelated man on the cover.
I built one of these once when an issue of White Dwarf had rules for a bar brawl game in it. It was really fun for just a 10-20 minute game.
thanks so much I learn something every video
Yeah Bro, this was very cool. At some point I'm going to need a tavern. Thanks for the help. 😁
Well done Jeremy. Love how it turned out.
I love the little fireplace in the back! That would be a great beginner project for a future video?
That looks great, especially the windows.
Amazing. So freakin ‘ amazing. Just.... 😯 wow !
Total Awesomeness ...>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I really like the idea of a stage-like diorama as opposed to the more traditional style.
That turned out pretty sweet!
This guy gets it!
but who doesnt love a good bar fight big man ?!!
Looks like you're buddy's technique is working good for ya man. Love it
Glad I'm revisiting it. It's the technique I started with, and really should have kept it in my repertoire
.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial well the tavern looks fantastic, Great work as usual haha
Great looking 'set' piece for use as a backdrop. I love the colors and the way they came out. I believe you
said that the templates may be coming out soon. I hope so. I did watch the other video from last week
but i don't remember whether or not you guys tried the same carving style on the pink foam.
No matter since what you have here is yet one more tool in the set. Again awesome results.
Yup, we did the same on the pink foam. It’s possible just more difficult to get clean results.
Great work! It inspires me to build something similar for Frostgrave.
(weg)
For a little more authenticity; leaded in roundals were the common men's window panes.
Wow a real historian of fantasy world taverns!
Nice Video to begin this Friday! Gooood Morning from France!
Good night from Canada!
I think it’d make for a great skirmish if you have are given the quest to go to the mountains and discover the old temple where the evil wizards coven have been sacrificing towns people and just when you’re amped up and ready to leave the wizards stroll into the tavern for a drink and you have to battle them right then and there.
Nice work.. Resembles my local pub in Hertfordshire UK
When you said that you were going to start the tedious task of carving. It almost sounded like you were ready to give up right there...LOL.
