If you want to get something ready for the table, this is a prime example of efficient painting. I'm absolutely in love with these models by the way. Wicked Foundation did an amazing job!
First off, both the base and the miniature came out looking quite awesome. I think you stayed faithful enough to the artwork while still adding personal touches and the diorama base definitely suits that thing (which is indeed creepy). Now, speaking as someone who's been doing this for a while, its not your skills that are falling short; white and light gray tones are *very* difficult to get completely smooth transitions on. In the case of the type of white acrylic paint we use for miniatures, that chalky, speckled finish comes from the fact that the pigment is still much coarser than other colors; the two sources for white pigment are lead (which they don't use for obvious reasons) and titanium oxide and this results in coarser pigment that makes it difficult to really adequately thin white paint and get a smooth coat. This carries over because many of light gray paints have white in them, meaning that some of that coarser pigment is present. One possible way to get around this is to buy something like artist's grade white acrylic paint; I don't know what's different about the source of pigment or the process of creating the paint but its much smoother and contains more finely ground pigments making it easier to thin and apply smoothly. Another option is to use white artist's acrylic ink; specifically I'd recommend the Daler Rowney FW inks if you can get them. You can still get a nice, opaque color with it and its pretty forgiving to use.
I appreciate the honest review. I would LOVE to see you make some horror themed terrain pieces if you end up picking up some more miniatures from this line!

You are way too modest. This is gorgeous. And the removable base extension is a brilliant idea that I will be using. If you worry about a chalky look while highlighting, varnish after the base coat and thin your highlight colors with extra medium. It helps a bit with the highlight layers drying too quickly and not blending in the layers well. I probably shouldn't offer up paint tips to someone who already paints better than me. lol
I really like that you don't make the things to look easy and share all problems that you've faced. A tip for blending and hightlighting: use sponge or fan brush, with the brush you are using it won't happen. The best results are on half-dry base color. The trick with sponge is to find the correct amount of top color. You can check my 'Skull Candle Holder' video to see how blending with sponge works.
You can blend with a round brush just fine. Just have to feather and use thinned colors and layer it up from the blended area to the final color you want.
@@ShadowDrakken on that small scale it's really hard to do so and I don't see the point to make your life harder when there are better and easier tools for this. I don't see why you aren't happy with your painting skills. Here's a tip for making that transition from that grey (or whatever color) body to dark hands Apply a thin black wash up to the edge of where you want the transition. Let that dry and apply another thin black wash just slightly below the point you brought it before. I would love to see what you consider your better painted miniatures, 'cause that creature is very well painted. Even the highlights are pretty well done.
Quick and dirty, but very effective blending technique is to use feathering with diluted colors. You can set down a few very thin layers quickly, and deepen the color where you need it deeper by just adding layers that that area. And by feathering each layer you hide any sharp edges that might otherwise build up.
Very interesting creature, for sure. I've been working on creating a cemetery set for an upcoming Halloween game. I made a bunch of graves, a mausoleum, a couple creepy trees, decrepit walls and a gate. Most of the stuff, I made with the help of your videos, but a lot of it, I had to come up with my own ideas, and I think I can give you credit for that too, since you're always saying, "Just try it out, and see what works." So thank you for that.
Well, just backed that Kickstarter. A delivery date of December 2020 gives me plenty of time to figure out a home-brew for the group of minis I backed.
The blending looked great! For a future video you should try to make some sort of Colosseum or fighting pit for PC's to fight beasts and other gladiators
Looks awesome! Somehow this video has me inspired to make some barrows/ burial mounds, although I don't quite know how to approach this (never build anything)... in any case, the painting looks awesome and the base is just perfect!
7:20 I used a bit of drybrushing on top of the contrast and then smudged it a bit with my finger. it seemed to provide a bit extra smooth definition to the muscled areas on the Griffon i painted.
I pledged :) not even a dnd player but the sculpts are so beautiful (and horrorific !) can’t wait to work on them. You did amazing work on this figure.
Looks fantastic! The gore was a nice touch. You could have done more highlighting on the muscles maybe given the beastie a cutie mark but that's subjective cause it came out awesome
That's a really nice model. I'm going to have to check their stuff out. I know what you mean about painting massive areas for hours to get sexy blends. I have an airbrush I'm terrified of using but I think using it on something like this to pick out the zenith highlights would work better. Also... potential future patron....as soon as I get my job as a nurse! Keep up the good work bro.
I love this kickstarter and will be pledging to it. These critters are my jam! I hope it gets funded! Also, I think you did an amazing job on the painting!
Saw the thumbnail and thought “This is your monster for the build challenge! How did he do that!” Had a good laugh when I figured out what was actually happening. Might have to check these guys out, I’ve been writing a lot of creepy encounters recently.
I'm only 49 seconds in, I just wanted to say that the little Mr Fuzzybottom has my attention. Edit: the removable mini from the base is super creative. With your scaling issue, maybe the next model you can put the bones that look regular mini sized on top of and around the pile of bones under the Dional Beast.
Bro, you blew my mind with that trick with the blood streaks using Vallejo Water Texture. I have never seen that before, and it looks like a sweet combination of a decal and actual paint, with a way more realistic look. I'm going to use this technique to paint the minis from my Nemesis board game especially, because that creepy bloody gore look fits them so well. That is a sensationally eerie mini and I'm off to check out that Kickstarter.
I personally think a lot of miniature painters go overboard with the layers and whatnot (just for my tastes anyhow) So I really liked your attempt here. I don't actually paint anything in this small scale but I kind of want the Dional Beast, what a badass sculpt.
I pledged - that stiggon is gonna be one of player's patron for his warlock. Loved your base for the beast and thanks for pointing out this great kickstarter.
This video is brought to you by... Sculptamould! Those miniatures look awesome, gave me a kind of Pan's Labyrinth vibe as you were flicking through the book. I personally think your paintjob looks fantastic - I think that chalky look you got from highlighting makes larger miniatures look more realistic than the high contrast clean line highlighting that most miniature painters aim for. Diorama base is cool too - can imagine that placed harmlessly on the edge of a camp when players bed down for the night then... BOOM woken up by that thing staring down at them all :)
This Mini looks amazing. I'd love to get my handy on some of them. Thanks for the cool vid :3 I also love the base. Made me wanna build some nice dio bases for my minis again!

To make a more 3D blood drip get some 1/4 lbs test monofilament fishing line and suspend it with either a weight at the end or make a small jig with a couple of tongue depressers and 1/4 - 1/2 inch round or squar wood strips 4 inches long or so and glue and screw them together so you have a squar with the top and bottom being flat. Take a pen vice and drill a few holes in both depressers to match. then run the fishing line from one depresser to the other and secure them tightly. Take your blood like paint and slowly add some to the top and let is drip some. Let dry a little then add some more. Letting it cure some between each application. This will give you not only texture on all sides but give you different thickness going down the stream instead of being flat on one side. Also works for waterfalls and fountains. You just need to make a few like this and then cut them off the jig place them side by side and use the water/blood paint to join them at the top. You can separate the strands and join a few here and there going left and right as well as going down the drips to male it look more real.
I'm so glad they are selling actual minis instead of .stl files! I actually own a 3D printer but it's quality of prints is not the greatest, a finely detailed model like this would just become a mess of plastic when put through it
Question; if you were just starting out, what set pieces do you feel like come up most often in generic campaign A? (what would you prioritize building first? trees / houses/ streets etc.)
The big boy in their magazine has a very strong resemblance to Smough from Dark Souls.... while this is cool, I do fear copyright infringement xD Anyway, awesome video as always man, but please.... bring back the beard =(
Injection molded as in polystyrene? Amazing build and your mini painting skills are nothing to sneeze at i reallylike how he turned out. Also you've done a better job of selling me contrast than alot of channels did a few months back

I thought it might be like, a dying dire animal finds the remains of a giant or a bone golem and the remaning magical energy of the two atempts to form a new whole resulting in the beast. Consequently the beast can actually come in many forms

Everyone take a drink when he says Scalptamold.
Wesh alreedy hass.
This is a good primer but my gOODDD!
This was a fantastic well edited episode been watching you since your rock golem episode keep it up 🖤
I'm so glad they are selling actual minis instead of .stl files!
You did a awesome paint shop. It looks better then the artwork.
I love any type eldritch being. So i was delighted to find out this was a thing. Also, i thought you killed the paint job.
Thanks!
This monster would fit right into something like Stranger Things. Looks awesome, Jeremy!
Yes!
The big boy in their magazine has a very strong resemblance to Smough from Dark Souls.... while this is cool, I do fear copyright infringement xD
Anyway, awesome video as always man, but please.... bring back the beard =(
Love your videos!!👏👏
Injection molded as in polystyrene?
Amazing build and your mini painting skills are nothing to sneeze at i reallylike how he turned out. Also you've done a better job of selling me contrast than alot of channels did a few months back
"I'm not a great mini painter."
...Right. Sure. I'm sorry, my Canadian friend, but you are better than you think you is. I'll buy the impatient part, but when driven to do a good job, you delivered. That mini looks Amazing.
Let me be clear.....not good compared to super serious mini painters. But I feel I’m more than good enough for tabletop playable.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial - Completely understandable. In truth, I was attempting to compliment you, though I may have failed. Your work is wonderful, and those dedicated, professional mini painters are on a whole other level of reality, in my opinion. I'm still just trying to figure out highlights, never mind some of the crazy lighting effects that are out there.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial As a Canadian, he is genetically predispositioned to avoid receiving the glowing compliments he deserves. We ADORE his work.
Says sorry in Canadian.
@@wickedfoundations2281 Completely in agreement. There are So. Many. amazing builds that BMC has done that I want to experiment with. I just go slow because I'm a traveling DM, and have that extra hiccup to deal with.
It reminds me of the monster from The Ritual, I love it.
Don’t sell your mini painting skills short, my dude! This was a great paint job!
I'm sooooo happy to hear someone else say that spray smells bad.
It STINKS!!!
It’s offensively bad
The Kickstarter Looks awesome! The miniatures reminde my of Kingedom Death Monster (my favorite Game of all Times) but sadly way to expensive. The Kickstarter could be an alternative.
An i think, your Dional Beast turned out great. The blood on his Hand made him realy creepy and the different varnisches are helping as well.
SCULPTAMOLD SCULPTAMOLD SCULPTAMOLD SCULPTAMOLD

I thought it might be like, a dying dire animal finds the remains of a giant or a bone golem and the remaning magical energy of the two atempts to form a new whole resulting in the beast. Consequently the beast can actually come in many forms
In several of your videos, you describe chip board. In the UK, chip board is a wood based sheet flooring or furniture building material. In no way can you cut it with a craft knife. What is the chip board you use as a base made from and what might it be called in UK?
Thumbs up just for saying "Vallejo" properly.
Get out of my head witch. You cant send me a notification about this while I'm looking at the kickstarter page
Mwah ha ha ha! Our scrying spell is known in common as 'Google Algorithm!'
@@wickedfoundations2281 Your minis arent the type im interested in but part of me wants to buy them anyway because they are so beautiful. I really hope you come out with different lines like this and make things i cant do without.
